Aerobie Aeropress Coffee Maker $19.85 + $9.95 Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Alternative Brewing via Westfield Direct

1330

Seems like cheapest ever.

I have an espresso machine so I don't need this, don't want it and probably would never use it but the ozbargainer in me says I should buy it. So if you would kindly please make this go out of stock it would be greatly appreciated. Then I can complain about how I missed out on such a good deal and comment in every single proceeding deal about how it's not as good as that sub $20 deal from way back when.

Edit - mission accomplished. In under an hr too. Still feel slightly bad that I missed out. Good times…

Seems to be a really good deal

  • How much is the filter paper?

    • +8

You can buy a reusable metal filter

      • This. I think i bought one on AliExpress for like 10 dollars a year ago

        • +2

Can get good ones for around $6 delivered off eBay

        • Are the metal filters as good coffee snob making wise as the paper filters?

And how much are paper filters for good decent ones anyway out of interest?

          • @SaberX:

as good coffee snob making wise as the paper filters?

Coffee’s just as good, extraction (plunge) a little bit faster.

          • +1

@SaberX: As good but different. Paper is cleaner, metal has more body. Up to you which one you prefer.

    • Should come with 300. I reuse at least another time

    • $7.90 for 350 filters currently. And yeah reusing the filters doesn’t affect the taste noticeably at all.

  • +1

Really good deal wow. I don't like using unnecessary plastic though - will stick to my French press.

    • +3

It's just not the same. With right amount of water and grind you can even create an espresso with crema. But if you're happy with what's working for you then each to their own. This is more for those that care about the taste of portable coffee. We used it a lot when driving around Australia and didn't want to spend money buying barista coffee.

      • +1

Can you share how? Or have a link to the espresso with crema technique? There is an add-on (Fellow Prismo) that supposedly can do this by creating extra pressure. I can't see how you can with the standard aeropress.

        • I too would like to know - I absolutely get zero crema with mine ( I do inverted method if that makes a diff)

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: I'm wondering if it has something to do with the grind. I get a shitload of crema from the Vittoria espresso grind I sometimes buy, but then barely anything from the Airjo Aeropress grind. I wonder if it's the extra pressure required… or just different beans.

      • Yeah it's a fantastic idea for portability!

  • Tried it, not for me.. too fiddly.
    Neat idea though

    • +3

Im a big fan of no fuss coffee but am a big fan of aeropress inverted method and aldi pre ground beans.

Genuinely want to know which part you found too fiddly…

      • Assembling the press and processing it.

Compared to my EM5300S with integrated grinder espresso machine,.. for me it’s a snap to grind and shoot.
Less cleanup too, as I just rinse the porta-filter, wipe the bench and it’s job done.

Personal preference perhaps I never bothered to become proficient at it, but I prefer the taste out of my sunbeam machine in any event.

        • +1

but I prefer the taste out of my sunbeam machine in any event.

I guess I would too, but would be a bit sad if anyone preferred the coffee out of a $20 piece of plastic over a $500 machine haha

          • +8

@Jimothy Wongingtons: That’s actually not true.

Aeropress does not yield espresso, so you can’t really compare to the results from the Sunbeam.

Aeropress is more of an immersion brew with some characteristics of espresso given the pressure applied to the water moving through the coffee bed. But it’s also filtered - so a very different result in the cup.

That noted, with some skill behind the aeropress you could absolutely achieve a better cup of ‘coffee’ out of an aeropress than that Sunbeam.

          Can you take it camping?

          • @Zilch: I bought this for camping (so yes to your question) but ended up using it on a daily basis.

The key is to learn how to use aeropress without all the fancy tool eg knowing the ratio of beans to water by hand, and knowing the brew time (for a particular water temperature). I have a fancy kettle at home that would brew the water to 90c. During camping i boiled the water but add a cup of room temperature water to bring it down. (It’s not foolproof but it gets the job done). OR you can just buy beans that would tolerate boiling water temperature brew.

A manual grinder and water pouring technique would also help.

    • Yeah they are a bit. I have one of these kicking around in my cupboard from about 5-6 years ago, I have the metal filter too. IMO It makes quite average coffee. I am not sure why people like these so much. I had mine at work, which is the only way I could think of a good use for it, and maybe camping. But then they got espresso machines there.

My French press makes better coffee and my Moka pot makes much better coffee (which I now use every day). I haven't got any pour-overs but I imagine they are better as well.

      • I imagine they are better as well

        Erm, quite.

      • My RitePress makes good coffee… took forever to get it from the kick starter

  • Thanks. Bought for my Ca phe sua da. Saved ya.

    OOS

    Edit - Its back again

  • have a french press and a moka pot at home, don't really need another coffee maker lol

    • +2

Moka Pot dead to me after aeropress …

Unless you either make big batch or there’s more than 1 person drinking coffee per brew?

      • Really? I'm like 95% moka pot, 5% aeropress at home. Is it an effort/cleanup thing or a taste thing, or both?

        • Effort and consistency. Plus it’s only me drinking coffee. I did keep some in fridge for a while and dilute it down with ice cubes to make a kind of iced coffee but these days prefer it hot.

When I had 4 housemates I would brew a batch around 7am and we would all share a coffee over breakfast.

        • +2

My moka pot has also been sidelined for the aeropress. I reckon the coffee just tastes better from it. Less acidic or something.

  • Is this a worthwhile purchase if I have a pod machine?

    • +4

      Yes!

    • Depends which pod machine? The new Nespresso pod machines I thought were pretty great. On the other hand the coffee Italy one I got for ‘free’ from woolies is trash. I literally could not even give it away lmao

    • -2

No. I think this is when you’re away from home with no machines around and dislike instant coffee.

    • +4

Get rid of the pod machine!

  • +1

    whats wesftield direct //

  • +9

This is a really simple way to make good coffee, less fiddly and easier to clean then any other manual brewing method I’ve tried. If all you care about is a hot caffeinated drink that doesn’t taste too bad, then a pod machine will do. But if you want more out of your coffee and make it closer to a hobby rather than means to an end, the aeropress is the most accessible.

  • Bought two, then received email from Westfield saying order couldn't be fulfilled. Damn.

    • Saw that coming, just didn’t expect it to be so quick

      • +1

Yeh me neither. I guess jt's cheap enough to be in the buy now think later, use once and chuck in cupboard forever category. I really have enough coffee crap filling my cupboards

  • +1

    OOS

  • Damn…

  • Random question: does Westfield direct accept Westfield gift cards?

  • Excellent intro device to nice coffee, though eventually you'll evolve beyond it.

    Good price too.

Buy the metal filter on eBay

  • I don’t use my aeropress at home anymore but if I’m away from the house for a night or more you can be damn sure I’m packing the Aeropress in my suitcase.

  • managed to get one before it's OOS so quickly. Thanks to OP

    Anyone elses order get cancelled?

Just got a cancellation email this morning. Was about to test the waters of an aeropress but I guess I'll hold out for now

    • Yes I got an email indicating they're issuing a refund

    • Yep 😕

  • Placed an order last night at 10:36 pm but the order status says refunded.

  • Refund in process

  • Cancelled as well.

  • cancellation issued

  • Do these things wear out? Ie are they worth buying second hand?

    • +1

Pretty safe to buy second hand imo.

Check the rubber on the piston and the interior of the main tube for scratches if you’re worried but pretty hardy design.

      • +1

        Thanks!

  • I used Apple Pay, got charged but order was not created. Shitty system. Trying to reach them for refund now.

  • I LOVE my aeropress. Paid $25 a little while back when Inglewood had 50%off. It took some trial an error to get it the way I like. Trying the method on the directions made a weak coffee. I drink iced coffee, i use the imverted method, move to the "2" line, put in 2 heaped scoops of coffee, hot water, stir well and then set my timer for 2 mins. Then swirl and press slowly over ice, add milk. Comes out perfecto. Only thing is, whilst I've perfected it for my iced coffee, I don't know how to make a good coffee for other people that are used to a standard instant, with 3/4 water, 1/4 milk. If I do my method, its only like 1/4-1/3 a mug of coffee. If I fill with milk ita cold. So tried to top up with hot water. Then milk. Nope. Tried to do two coffee scoops but the press set to 4 instead of 2 so there's more liquid. The reception I get is "its ok". Would love any advi e from anyone that normally would drink an instant coffee but uses this now. I don't drink instant so I don't know how to make a ni e coffee for my guests.
