Cheapest I've seen this anywhere online recently. Has been $599 for a while on Amazon AU and similair stores.
Albeit not the best laser (led) printer, and not the one I was really after (HP m479fdw) - I cannot justify the extra price rise for the HP, so have just pulled the trigger on this one.

Good printer, bought one earlier this year for $509 delivered from getbrother.com.au

Does everything you can think of. Just be sure to download the driver package from brother, the basic drivers on my Windows 11 weren't good enough and at one point had the 2nd page of duplex always printing upside down, regardless of any software setting. All fixed once drivers were updated.

Yes it's a bit bulky and you need to factor in clearance for the opening lid (obviously), and less obviously need clearance at the back as half the printer pivots up at the rear when changing toner.

Take this for what it's worth. I'll personally never buy Brother again because the customer service was atrocious. Had to threaten them with legal action before they quit sprouting insensible excuses and authorized the return. Further - Brother seems to have removed my review from their site!!! Nefarious. As I said. Won't deal with them again.

Here's the review. Hope it helps. Happy if someone can confirm whether this has been fixed in newer versions. This purchase was at the end of 2020.

The printer comes at a great price with commendable print quality, however the following are deal breakers -
    1. Mono copying (of documents) results in an excessively dark copy with detail completely blown out. Reducing the density does not help as it causes detail to be lost, rather than simply affecting the brightness/contrast of the print. Brother Support are unable to resolve this. A Color copy of the greyscale print was better but will be cost prohibitive.
    2. The flat bed scanner is not scanning an A4 page edge to edge despite the specifications indicating it would. All 4 edges are trimmed (~3mm). This is not correctable. The scan using "Auto" paper detect and "A4" produced inconsistent results i.e.: the trimming occuring were different across the two. Consequence - anything placed at the corner of the scan bed (e.g.: ID, Passport) will be trimmed.
    3. Unless the scan lid is closed completely (i.e.: single A4 page), mono copies end up with a greyscale "shadow" - i.e.: reflection back off the scan cover is significant. Copying a passport document resulted in a black to grey gradient across the page. Moving the document setting to Auto resulted in other issues occurring - contrast was thrown off.
    4. In general - copies lack crispness and look "smudgy". Contrast and brightness is way off, the ADF is not consistent when feeding paper resulting in markedly visible skewness in copies and scans, WiFi is not strong, toner color reproduction is on the weaker side - a couple of tones off expectation.

All issues have been raised with Brother Support. They acknowledged all issues, however have no solutions for me. I was told to talk with my Retailer. Very disappointed Brother.

    • did u print that..deleted review?

Nope but they emailed confirmation of the review being live as well as their support team's response to it.

Check Facebook marketplace first. People sell these for like $100 or less. Some even come with extra toners.

Bought two colour lasers. Both had printed less than 2000 pages and had first set of toners.

  • Thanks! My partner was literally wanting a colour laser printer, but I wanted one that does duplex scanning! So this is perfect!

Anyone know if this will take generic toners?

    • Yeap

  • Brother have the best Twain drivers used by tens of thousands of apps bar none.

  • How does it compare to the L8690CDW?

  • I got this printer from Scorptec for $499 in 2021. It has been great, mostly.
Once it got automatically reset for no reason (maybe because I was using it after a month).
The scans from ADF always look crooked. I've tried different settings/paper orientations etc but still it never gives straight scans.
It does take a lot of space.

I have the same issue with scans — they come out crooked. I think the issue is the ADF roller which grips the paper is small and sometimes it grips the paper on an angle. The plastic guides which are supposed to hold the paper straight don’t do a very good job either. So sometimes the scan comes out skewed a little clockwise, and sometimes a little counterclockwise.

I’m very happy with everything else about the printer. I have never had any issues with the print quality or reliability.

  • I price matched OW for 437.95$ last year. It's a good printer, no issues till now.

  • Missed out on this :( seems to be $599 most places now.

MFC-L8690CDW Is $582 from good guys commercial, wondering whether to pull the trigger on it seems pretty much identical to this except slightly longer lasting drum.

Does anyone know of an A3 laser colour with duplex scanning / printing ??
