Honestly, after having supported HP and Brother printers for years, I'd go with the Brother over the HP, just for build quality. The last good HP printers were the HP LaserJet 4 series, everything in the HP low end space is pretty garbage.

I've got a Brother MFC-9335CDW that I've had for at least 8 years now, and it hasn't ever skipped a beat.

    • Agreed that MFC-9335CDW is solid product.

I am just curious if MFC-L3770CDW also low end product from Brother?

      • +1

They're similarly specced, the L3770CDW is just a bit slower. I recall when I bought the 9335CDW that it was the cheapest of the Brother multifunction colour laser printers about, so I wouldn't be surprised if the L3770CDW is a direct replacement.

      • It's not slow at all for my use and doesn't feel lower specced. I use mine for a small business and mechanically it's been solid. They do however do the firmware locking out non-Brother cartridges trick with Toners so just update once when you get it and keep using it without updating further unless you actually notice an issue, I've always used non-Brother cartridges when it runs out of toner. I use all the scan to Google and Dropbox type features as well and they've been excellent (I use the scan to cloud features alot more than regular printing). Even the fax works fine (yes it's still a thing for Dr referrals and some legal stuff).

Ive got the brother L2395 B&W laser and its faultless - wireless printing from anything…awesome printer.

    • +3

My HP all in one inkjet played up many years ago, printing pages in random orders, even from different computers lol.
Bought a Brother after that and never missed a beat!

    • +3

The HP LaserJet 4 Canon-supplied internals. That’s why they were regarded as better printers.

    • +1

I have the Brother MFC-9330CDW and solid as rock. Bought for $350 from HN.

    • +1

My Brother HL-2270DW laser B+W printer has seen around 10 years of almost daily use. It's still plugging away tenaciously even though I always put 3rd party toner and drums in it, bless it's inky heart.

    • whabbout fuji xerox ??

    • still using my 9335CDW, only just had a roller change maybe cause I print with lots of thick glossy paper

  • +2

Is the colour cartridge expensive for this model?

    • +13

Non genuine is cheap. The whole set of 4 for $57.50 on ebay or Genuine $500 at officeworks LOL.
I have never had problems with the non Gen toners. We buy heaps for our office black toner Brother printer. We got 2995 prints for $9.50 toner.
The genuine one would have costed $90 or more

      • +4

Yeh, and you definitely don't need genuine toners for Brother printers. They do fine with generic stuff.

        • +8

Not true. Updated firmware can block non genuine from being used

          • +6

@[Deactivated]: Not true at all. Brother don't run DRM on their media.

            • +4

@sortius: Not sure mate, I’ve heard this too.

I have a brother printer but am just not updating firmware. Too many reports of this breaking compatibility with generic cartridges/toner.

Unless you have a myth busting article… I’d be keen to know if I’ve been listening to urban legends

              • +1

@wormarts: i think the newer printers have chip readers and each genuine toner cartridge has a chip, though there were ways around it, i think there were ways to remove the chip and put it on a generic cartridge and then keep reusing it or something along those lines

              • +8

@wormarts: Having owned multiple brother laser MFC including the MFC-L3770CDW, in my experience that there has never been a firmware that has broken generic toners.

However there is a chip on the toner that is powered by a small coin battery. If this battery runs flat (usually after a power out or turning off at the wall), it will no longer recognise the toners.

You can get the replacement batteries online, they are AG0 / LR521 type. To replace you have to pull the chip off toner then bend the metal in battery bracket open, replace then bend close and stick back on toner.

Occassionaly this only works on some of the toners though. Like I recently did battery replacement but inexplicably only half the toners started working again. They are all same generic brand.

This has happened multiple times to me and usually at the worst possible time, like just when I need to print a bunch of stuff. It's annoying enough to make me rethink ever buying another brother laser MFC.

                • @Ryballs: Approximately how old were these toners that the battery had run flat in?

Just trying to see if this issue is due to light use and the toner being say 5 years old or something, or if this happens with a toner that's only 12 months old or so?

My wife's a teacher so printer would probably get a fair bit of use so I'd say we'd get through toner every 12 months.

                  • +1

@Binchicken22: About every 6-12 months but I often turn it off at the wall which I think makes the battery run down faster. Basically have no choice but to leave printer on standby even if I barely use it.

              • +2

@wormarts: It's true. All of it. We had a power outage and when power came back on, our hp-3270cdw printer said "no toner". I tried all the stuff in this Reddit thread including buying a new battery for the black cartridge.

It seems (Brother won't acknowledge) that once the battery in the black cartridge runs down, such as during an outage, the printer won't be able to detect it.

I found replacing the black cartridge (with another 3rd party) did the trick, which Inkstation sent me for free. They said the Brother firmware upgrades were to blame.

                https://www.reddit.com/r/printers/comments/mprkms/no_toner_m…

            • @sortius: No, it is true - I have experienced this firsthand (on this exact printer). I had older cartridges though - it appears that the sellers of non-genuine cartridges have updated their chips, so the replacements that I bought work fine.

            • @sortius: They do, I've had two sets of toners blocked after updating firmware. With one set I was able to exchange with the toner place but not the other.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: I got this printer and after an accidental firmware update my toners from AussieToners bought on ebay is disabled. It shows the cartridges are more than half full but it keeps saying No Toners.

Bottom line is dont update firmware.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yep, this was exposed last brother colour laser bargain.

Soul crushing, they were the last of the good guys

        • +11

Crazy that they embed batteries in already unlikely to be recycled plastic device. Its criminal environmental waste.

I'm sure if they could embed wifi cheap enough they'd make it require an online correction for the toner to work.

      • +1

Just FYI we manage a lot of Brother MFPs across a lot of clients. Every now and then I get a call about the printer just stopped working over night. First question I ask is "Are they genuine toners?" Answer is always "No." They drop in a Brother toner and bang its working again. Brother certainly do push FW updates to disable non-gen toners from time to time. Most of these printers would have been supplied in the last 3 years, maybe printers prior to that aren't affected.

        • +2

Do they? Ive had brother printers for over 10 years now (about four different models, have two 3170CDW's and an A3 injet at the moment) and never had an issue…i always use 3rd party toners / inks for obv reasons.

          • @Franc-T: Its interesting that some are saying they dont see this issue. Maybe comes down to different brands of the non-gen toners. Dunno, just reporting what we deal with.

        • I think you'll find if they dropped in a new generic it would also start working again. Good way to sell more Brother product though.

          • @Ryballs: We never sell consumables so I could care less what people use, our general advice is use genuine, at least while the printer is under warranty, but in the end people can do what they like.

            • @ddr0001: I would buy genuine if they weren't quadruple the price. Also what does a generic cartridge have to do with the printer warranty?

      • Under $60 for a full set of toners to do 2,300 pages is awesome.

Does this unit have a drum that needs replacing? My quick google says yes- after 18,000 pages new drum is $350. Is this expensive in the scheme of things ?

  • Any good deals on A3 MFP?

    • Looking for a decent A3 too.

anyone have exprience with this…I basically want to print out menus for a restaurant.

      • +1

I had the model below the 6540 age it was good but using non genuine ink it somehow cross contaminated the yellow age I never managed to clean it after that. I never printed a3 though, but it was a good printer until then.

      • interesting how the A3 printers are inkjet printers.

After reading your post, I'm also curious about buying a A3 printer too,
but just a quick glance, shows that the inkjets are in the 'affordable' price range.

  • +1

thanks, got me on the duplex scanning

    edit: doesn't deliver to Perth

  • +1

i've had this printer for a couple years. awesome. ink retention is great. no connectivity issues.

    • Have you replaced the toner with non genuine product without any issues?

      • +1

i bought the printer in Oct 2018, then bought genuine ink from inkstation in July 2019 after my wife printed a tonne of heavy ink stuff at home instead of at her work. Due to sporadic use, that ink is still going strong.

  • +11

    jv's voice: is it heavy?

    • +10

      No, it’s your brother

      • +2

he ain't heavy, he's my brother

  • +3

Very tempted but then I ask myself, what the hell do I need a printer or scanner for these days?

    • +1

so why were u tempted in the first place XD

That being said, I have two printers (A4 colour laser and A3 inkjet) at home.

I also don't bother with a printer after my Lexmark. crapped out 3 years ago.

My local library has up to A3 colour laser, PDFs uploaded to the library print app, walk in, scan the QR code on the printer and it prints on thier office grade printer, 20c a page (A4 black, duplex is 20c as well) top up the App (Pharaos ) with Paypal. I print maybe twice a year?

Scanning is free at the library and for other scanning I just use PDF scanning built into Goggle Drive on my phone and crop. It's a <5 min scoot on my escooter to the library.

        • Same for me except at I do it at work. In any case, my personal printing needs are basically zero now that everyone has smartphones.

  • how does it rate against HL-L3230CDW for the colour print quality?

Brother HL-L3230CDW Colour Laser Printer - Single Function, Wireless/USB 2.0, 2 Sided Printing, A4 Printer, Small Office/Home Office Printer https://amzn.asia/d/3zqC0Oc

  • Good deal. The brother 3745 model at the good guys is similar just without the double sided scanning. It costs $449 but usually have 10% off sales and extra storecash. Then complain and day you aren't happy because they don't deliver it on time/yep then you will reject delivery and get some store credit. Ends up pretty cheap

    • Significantly cheaper if you have TGGC

      • how much cheaper is 'significantly'

        • 330$. That's true but it was out of stock and I needed a printer 🙁

      • TGGC don't stock it.

        • +1

Strange can’t see it online indeed from TGGC. I bought it (MFC-L3745CDW) back in June 2022 for $330 from them. Great price. Took 6 months+ though for stock.

          • +1

@fault: It got ozbargained a few weeks ago and they removed it I doubt they will put it on commercial again any time soon.

            • +1

@Teh White Mamba: Has been on and off the last 18-odd months. I waited about 6 months for them to come back in stock.

        • +1

They did. Got mine for $320 a few months back

        • +1

It rarely comes into stock. I waited about 4 weeks checking every few days, got it for 330 and had had to go to a far away store, totally worth it

  • Great printer, had the 3750 for years and only had to replace a drum. Bit slow at printing multiple pages but rock solid, much more reliable WiFi connection than alternatives and much better value than HP.

  • +5

I have this printer - got it from CPL for 499.00 last year. Primary reason I got this over others, is that it has a 2 sided ADF (and A3 colour lasers were eye wateringly expensive).

Had two (2) issues with it to date:
    1. Something got caught in the ADF and there is no way to clear it and hence needed to go to service centre - was covered by Brother.
    2. Wouldn't power on one day - had to do a power reset to make it work again …. there is a few posts about dodgy capacitors on the network card.

Does know non branded toner is in use but still allows me to use it.

I have an old 2270dw that is still printing after all these years and I still use it for black and white stuff as I have a (profanity) of cheap toner about for it.

Would I buy it again…maybe … it's certainly had more issues than my 2270dw (zero issues) in the short time I have had it - hopefully that the worst of it.

    Got this printer. Highly recommend.

My current Brother MFC allows for direct scan to an email address by configuring an outgoing SMTP server. Benefit of this is that there is no need to install any software on a PC, the MFC will scan and send you an email with a PDF attached. Straightforward for my elderly home members to understand and use.

These new ones don't seem to able to do this anymore. Reading the manual, the scan to email function requires software installed on a PC to start your default mail client with the scan attached. You need to select what computer on the network to direct the file to on the MFC screen. Good if you wanted to send emails to friends, but completely useless for my purpose.

Is there any MFC that properly implements a scan to email function and doesn't require additional Windows software these days?

    • +6

I have the MFC-L3745CDW and it supports scan to email from the printer itself. No software required.

      • +1

Confirmed. I use the Scan to Cloud services (Google, Dropbox), Scan to Network and Scan to Email without software required.

      • Really? I was only able to access scan to email by going into scan to PC and then selecting email. It asked me to use the Brother iPrint software.

        • +1

Yes really. On the printer’s touch screen, tap Scan > to Web > Easy Scan to E-Mail > [pre-registered email you want to send to; you can also register as many as you like & send to multiple].

  • +3

I have this printer….it's great but keep in mind a couple of things:

    1. It's significantly bigger than b&w lasers. Make sure you take note of the dimensions to ensure it will fit where you want it to go.

    2. Photo printing isnt amazing.

    3. Last time I scanned a large number of docs at the same time, it would start going really slow after, say, 50 pages. Not sure if that has been fixed or whether it was a memory issue problem (likely the latter), but worth noting.

  • Does officeworks pricematch amazon?

  • How small is the footprint of this mfc? Are they chunky?

  • +1

It is very bulky, heavy and takes space. I have one for business use. Great if you need to do a lot of printing, scanning and copying. Good for printing hundreds of black with colour pages each week. Would recommend a much smaller printer for those needing it for lighter use

    • Never really seen a smaller laser.

  • Thanks, bought one. Was thinking MFC Printer MFC-L3750CDW from officeworks. This one looks better, only $30 more

  • +2

Is it really a "brother" if it isn't black?

  • +1

The HP the op was comparing this brother too are not like for like devices.

Eg 20 ppm for the brother and 40ppm for the HP so of course there will be a price difference.

  • +1

Nice price, was considering MFC-L8690CDW from good guys commercial for $582 because it has bigger drum and cheaper toner but might get this for the small amount of printing we will do and save some money.

  • Can anyone tell me, does it also have flat-bed scanning to allow me to scan a page from a book?

    • +1

      Yes it does.

  • -1

Good guys commercial is better than this surely?
