$20 cheaper than the next cheapest price on Part Picker AU

    • +5

Not a huge discount then. If you're not in a hurry, might be worth seeing how the new gen i3 compares to this when released, or how quickly the new i5 price falls.

  • Anything ground breaking in the 12th Gen intels? How much faster are they compared to 11th Gens?

    • +4

If you are comparing 11400f and 12400f,
      12400f
      around 10% more fps
30-40% less power consumption and heat
Upgrade probably no, buying new? Get 12400f or 5600

      • what about 1135G7?

        • +2

That's a laptop part, not really comparable.. Are you asking 11th vs 12th gen laptop..?

          • @ReaperX22: yeh sorry I'm confused. I thought when intel releases new chips, they will release whole range together (desktop and laptop)

            • +2

@Homr: Usually they're a bit staggered. But what are you asking haha. 13th gen just dropped, laptops with 12th gen have been out for a bit now. Do you already have a 11th gen or you're just wondering if the extra cost for 11th vs 12th gen is worth in a laptop?

  • +1

You can use it with Asrock B660M PG Riptide or MSI B660M Mortar Wifi Max to unlock non k overclocking.

    • That’s good to know. Got a 6th gen water cooled system that would be perfect for this as a upgrade in the future

    • Riptide B660 isn't sold in Aus and the Mortar Max is regularly $290+ though, its a bit in z690 territory…

      • Yeah I agree. Mortar Max is too expensive and you have to import the PG Riptide. I am using a Z690M Aorus Elite with a 12400f since I need three NVME slots. Still Z690 without a external clock generator chip cannot overclock the 12400f. What a shame.

  • I thought 12th gen was only released recently, they already have 13th gen?

  • +7

13th gen just released, but only 13600 and above model. So they are quite expensive, even though 13600 looks quite promising with power consumption and performance.

    • +2

It seems to beat the 7600x in most use cases and considering you can use previous b660 and z690 motherboards (they've had quite a bit of time to age and drop in price slightly) and ddr4 it seems like an absolute steal in terms of price to performance.

Difference between ddr4 and ddr5 in most cases aren't massive, ddr4 is still a great option.

Just because a product is being overtake by a new generation doesn't mean it becomes obscelete

      • yeah, I did a few build tests and seems to be around $400 difference including cost of adding a decent cooler.

wonder if the jump is worth it

        • What are your specs right now? Or you mean jump from considering the 7600x to 13600?

Is packaging the i5-12400f with the MSI MAG B660 a good deal? https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/tomahawkbundle01-msi-mag-…

And if so, what memory would people recommend?

    • +9

DDR4 will be fine. DDR5 is too expensive for not enough gain.

Most people go for 16gb, 2x 8gb sticks.

The speeds aren’t all that important either.

      • Awesome - thanks

    • +1

      @Stalker
One of the best b660 mb

Still bit expensive on the mb part tho but pretty good combo

      • Thanks!

    • +2

MSI Pro B660M-A should be good enough. Tomahawk is for i7 or i9.

      • Cool, thanks

16G DDR4 3200 16CL is best value atm for budget gaming pc. 32G or 3600 really is optional upgrade for budget gaming PC. Motherboard best value probably Msi pro b660m-A, there is wifi version for some extra if you need wifi. I will get your link if the price is less than $20.

  • Also includes Modern Warfare 2 when you purchase the CPU

    • Honestly that makes it great value assuming the value of Modern Warfare 2 is $60-$110.

Cods rarely go below 50% off on even the deepest sales.

Great value CPU at roughly $200 when you consider this.

Personally I would be down to buy a MW2 key for $45

  • whats a good upgrade from the 7700k with a matx mobo?

    • +2

Mobo size doesn’t matter to CPUs. What matters is the mount/architecture.

AFAIK, K models aren’t worth it nowadays. The gain from custom overclocks is marginal, and the board model to do it, the Z690s, are too much of a price jump over their B660 counterparts.

      You’ll want either 12th or 13th gen. Something between 12500 and 13700.

      • cheers bud, ill wait for a deal on a 13700 and itx mobo and ddr5 ram.

  • +1

I have this CPU and think it's great, though the stock cooler was the first time I've ever felt it wasn't enough and had to be replaced. I've got the super cheap hyper 412r (had to buy a bracket but they may come with it now), and it does an amazing job of keeping it cool, don't think I've seen it get above 60 C.

  • should i upgrade to this from 5 years old i7-7700? mainly for adobe PS and Indesign.

    • +2

For windows 11 support and above, I’d recommend so. 7700 is a good chip and you can flip on eBay, it’s a no brainer

  • +4

For anyone who want to know budget cpu, This https://youtu.be/P-R5DcvT5CM compare 12100f, 12400(similar to 12400f), 5600x (5600 just slightly slower). You can skip to 15:15 for all fps benchmark in 4K, 1440p and 1080p. Just beware i3 12100f is 4 core cpu, you might experience slower performance if you have too many apps running in background while playing.

  • +1

anyone know if this is a good deal? i know if u bought them individually its more expensive but in terms of value is it worth it?
    B660M-A + 12400F

    • +1

Depends if you need the stock cooler and wifi/bluetooth connectivity

      • Assuming i say yes, then i can expect the answer to be yes its worth it?

        • +1

So with the same motherboard with wifi ends up being $458
With your link and a wifi adapter plus a better cooler is $1 more. PCCG shipping inevitably kills that, but you can probably just buy an AK400 from BPC tech as well

          • +1

@QF99: Awesome, i like how u added much more value than if it was bought individually.

  • +1

HODL for 13th gen low end I would say

  • For anyone that got theirs was the masterkey to redeem MW2 in the parcel? Mine has not yet been delivered and the email invoice does not reference it, I can also see that they've scrubbed all references to that promo from the web listing (though I have a screenshot showing it from the day I purchased)

    • Hey we're you able to redeem cod?

I want to buy a 13th gen but only if I get cod otherwise will go AMD

      • it sounds like most retailers have run out of codes - i'd imagine that's what happened to BPC and that's why they removed the promo from their site.

      • They apparently ran out temporarily and are trying to get new codes from Intel for people who purchased before they removed all reference to the promo. Still waiting for a code from them

        • I had confirmation today that Intel will give shopping express cuatomers codes if they purchase 11th or 12th gen i7/i9 processors.

I was hoping to get a 13600kf with modern warfare as overseas they are offering this promo but in Aus it seems currently it's only as I stated above unfortunately and probably a reason I'll buy a 5000series AMD over a new 13th gen Intel. The $120 value of cos was really a bonus to push me to 13th gen but alas it's not possible.
