FERREX PRO Electric Lawn Mower Kit (2 x 20V) $249, 20V 8.0 Ah Battery $99.99, 20V 4Ah Battery $49.99 @ ALDI Special Buys

240

45L hard top grass catcher with grass level indicator
High performance brushless motor with 2 x 20V power
Includes charger and 2 x 4.0Ah Xfinity Ultra 21700 batteries

I like the fact that Aldi's batteries now include 21700 cells. The 2 x 4Ah Ultra line battery itself is advertised at $50 each and you can get the 8Ah battery for $100 each. Ozito Battery Warranty whingers will cry out '1 year warranty on battery only' 'C'mon Bunnings, when match?' but I know people with 3 year old Aldi batteries and they work just fine.

Edit:
Some users have reported than the previous Aldi Mower from last month (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/725387) which was a beefier steel deck with 2 x 8.0ah battery (also 21700 cells) is currently discounted from it's original $399 price to $299 for the last remaining stock which makes it an infinitely better buy than the plastic deck 2x 4.0Ah mower in this deal or any Ozito Mower (Ozito still uses 18650 cells and maxes out at 4Ah). Only a handful of stores have the Aldi Steel Deck left in stock as it sold out within a few weeks last month. Try out your luck in your local stores and if you find any store that still has the Steel Deck in stock, list it in the comments below for other users who may want that deal.

For a moment I thought it was 2 mowers at that price and got excited.😝

  • +2

Does this mean bunnings will price match with the equivalent ozito item? If so, how long does it usually take?

    • +2

      1 week before normally

    • +14

Yep. Here are some potential matches. Total speculation on my behalf.

Mower. PXLMTK-4182. Same 370mm cutting width.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-2-x-18v-cordless-teles…
      Price reduction would be $399 down to $249 - a $150 saving.

The cheaper PXLMK-4182 (note the MK vs TK) has a smaller 335mm cutting width so likely not comparable. It is $319.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-2-x-18v-cordless-lawn-…

They might bring the steel deck in as a promotional item. That used to be sold at $399 when it was available, and would be a bargain at $249. It is much bigger though. I have one. It is great.

      Blower.
Hard to know. The cheapest Ozito (PXCBLS-018) one is already the same price, higher airspeed, much much less actual airflow.
The variable speed one is the same thing but higher price.
The Ozito jet blower style one is 2x 18V and much more powerful.
The blower vac ones are 2x 18v and not comparable.
They may not price match this since there is not a directly comparable product.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/search/products?q=ozito%20pxc%20…

      Staple / Nail Gun. PXNGS-018
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-2-in-1-cordless-na…
      $129, potentially down to $79.99. A solid $49 saving.
There is also an Ozito stapler, but likely not equivalent due to no nailer. It is also already the same price ($0.99 cheaper).
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-cordless-staple-gu…

      Mini Trimmer. PXCGSS-018
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-cordless-grass-tri…
$89.98. Potentially matched to $39.99. Solid deal at over 50% off.
The Ozito trimmer has one attachment that is slightly longer but only 20mm more.

Air pump. No Ozito PXC equivalent currently.
There used to be one. https://ozito.com.au/products/pxc-18v-high-pressure-air-infl…
Who knows if they will bring it in.

No Ozito 8Ah battery. Likely we will see the normal 4Ah battery for $50. Normally $69.
The Ozito one they use to match has a black underside, but teardowns of previous ones show the same internals.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-4-0ah-lithium-ion-…
      https://ozito.com.au/products/18v-4-0ah-battery/
They may also do the 2x 4Ah an charger for $100 to compete with the Aldi 8Ah battery. It was recently this price.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/725853

5 in one Garden tool skin. There is no normal Ozito PXC equivalent. Previously they have brought in a promotional kit - the PXGMTK-4182.
That was a 4 in 1 kit (no edger attachment), and came with 2x 4Ah batteries, for $279.
The same thing for ~$299 would be fairly equivalent to the Aldi one at $199 - just $100 more because of 2x 4Ah batteries.
IIRC, this is how they did it last time - the Aldi one was skin only.
Previous deals / discussion of this kit from 9 months, and 12 months ago.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/659845
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/679661

The unit has its advantages, but also has some mixed reviews. Single string trimmer and apparently heavy.
A key disadvantage for me (that meant I passed on the deal) was that (apparently - I never used it myself) the hedge trimmer attachment could only be attached via the extension pole. So for close up work, you were stuck with the trimmer blade being an extra meter or so away from you. That would make using it somewhat awkward IMO.

      • Go Bunnings!!!
I have to buy lawn mower. I already stacked GC!

      • Saturday morning and still RRP on the bunnings website. Doesn't look like there's going to be any matches this round.

    • Called 3 bunnings brach and everyone said it has to be the exact same brand for them to price match.

      • Bunnings Ozito Aldi price matching is Bunnings dropping the listed price themselves. No need to ask. The online price and tag price in store gets updated.

They do it whenever Aldi or sometimes other brands have an equivalent tool for sale cheaper.

  • Anyone know the weight of one of these?

    • +9

      Around 286 American hotdogs

      • +3

        With or without mustard?

  • 370mm might be too small, unless you don’t mind walking a few more rounds.

    • +1

I only have a small yard. When my petrol mower dies (or becomes too much of a PITA) I'll be replacing it with something like this.

  • +2

time for shopping ozito… wish ryobi will be on sale soon (need a mower and trimmer)

  • Come on Ozito/Bunnings let’s get matching

  • Have these been sold before? Anyone comment on quality? Also wondering how long they'd be available or if you could get parts after purchase some months/years down the track - like a new blade or battery etc.

    • Aldi has been selling electric mowers and tools for 10 years. General consensus is that it's the same 'cheap and cheerful' quality as Bunning's Ozito range.

      • Yes but a different one each time? Bunnings has fair parts support for the Ozito stuff. This stuff looks ok for the money, but if you can't get a battery or blade a year or three later, it's a false economy.

        • +1

Yeah the Aldi gear seems just as good, but Ozito is totally worth it for the easy replacement warranty and spare parts.

        • +1

Aldi batteries have been the same compatibility and readily available for years.

  • don't think it's a steel deck

    • That was listed a few weeks ago and it was $399.

      • +1

i saw a couple left at aldi yesterday discounted to 299

  • Did the steel deck one come with 21700 cells ? How do you tell the difference ?

    • Yes. 8ah 21700 Ultra battery. Drive around, you may find the steel deck on special at $300 at some stores (original price was $400 last month).

  • Ok, time to get Bunnings to come out with their matches today/tomorrow

  • Mower. PXLMTK-4182. Same 370mm cutting width.
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-2-x-18v-cordless-teles…

Is this the Brushless Motor like the ALDI one?

  • +2

C'mon Bunnings where's the price beat?!

  • +1

Has anyone caught wind of the 4 in 1 Ozito multitool referred to in Prong's helpful post above? I can't see any Bunnings listing for it.

I'm in the Ozito ecosystem so would prefer to stay with that, but am tempted by the 'equivalent' ALDI 5 in 1 skin.

(The current curved shaft dual battery Ozito line trimmer isn't so great)

    • +1

Nothing that I can see on the Bunnings website (Trade and normal). I was in Bunnings yesterday and there was nothing on the shelf.

Usually Bunnings will have price matched by now. Interesting…

  • There are no 8ah batteries in the Ozito Eco System and Ozito is still using older 18650 cells vs Ferrex Pro which now has 21700 ultra batteries in 4ah and 8ah. That’s a huge advantage for Ferrex Pro at least for now.

    • +1

Yeah the value from the Ferrex Pro gear seems very good.

Hopefully we will see the same with Ozito soon.

Ozito is rebranded Einhell, which does have PXC Plus 8Ah and 4Ah batteries that appear to be using 21700 cells. The spec sheets do not specifically say, but the size and weight match for 21700 cells.

18650 based batteries being replaced may be why Ozito has had that excellent value 2x 4Ah + charger deal for quite a while, and some deals on the 2Ah batteries a while back.

Interestingly Einhell have "Multi Ah" batteries. These offer (for example) the option to switch between 8Ah full capacity, or 5Ah, and 300% life expectancy.

They must be using the BMS in the battery to limit the maximum discharge and charge voltage when in 5Ah mode. This a great feature for frequently used batteries. It also means that for normal home use, the batteries should last a long long time. This could be a nice benefit for consumers who may have something like an electric mower for 10+ years, and not need to replace the batteries in that time. Of course battery tech is progressing rapidly, so new ones will be a lot more capable…

      https://www.einhell.cl/en/p/4511600-18v-5-8ah-multi-ah-pxc-p…

      • Yea, that is why I bought the ALDI Ferrex Pro steel deck for $300 this week (discounted from $400 but seems to have sold out). https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/725387?page=1#comment-1285…. The 2x 8Ah (21700 Ultra batteries) in that deal allows me to charge to 80% and mow the lawn ~300 sqm and still have 40-50% charge left. Right in the sweet spot range of a battery's charge-discharge cycle to increase battery life by 2-3x. And if I ever need the full capacity of 8ah then I charge to 100%. If you buy a 4Ah mower unit now and have to charge it to 100% all the time, obviously the battery life will severely degrade after just 2 years of mowing. If Ozito brings out 21700 cell 8Ah battery mowers this year, it will be a game changer. Aldi has had 21700 cell 4-8Ah batteries for over 12 months now, since 2021 so not a new thing.

        • Yeah nice - I had not followed the Aldi sales closely so had not realised their 21700 batteries were also adjustable Ah. Good stuff!

That mower deal sounds great though. $300 is fantastic value.

I have the Ozito Steel Deck (non propelled) from a few years back. $399 and only 4Ah batteries. I have a decent sized amount of grass (corner block) but I mow at the highest setting with no catcher, so it rarely spools up beyond minimum power and only takes about a half charge to do everything.

Looking at the Einhell mowers, the potential future steel deck Ozito options seem limited. Basically the self propelled model, or a steel deck mulching only model. Hopefully there are more in the works. I want a lower profile mower. It is annoying (to me anyway…) that electric brushless motors mean very little vertical height is needed, but they still put the batteries is a giant bulbous bit of plastic to look like an engine…

I've found the Ozito 4Ah 18650 batteries pretty good for longevity though. I do charge mine shortly before use though, so they spend 99% of their time at 50% charge. I have an excess of chargers, so have a couple plugged into a smart plug. That way I can leave batteries on it, and trigger charging remotely, or on a specific schedule. Removes some of the effort of managing charging.

I also have one 4Ah 'black' battery I focus my single battery use on (including running a hacked stick vac) to try and rack up wear (I capacity test it every 6 months or so with a load tester) but despite hundreds of partial cycles, it's not showing much wear yet. Possibly in part because it doesn't spend much time at full charge, or zero charge.

Having batteries that self manage that will be nice though.

          • @Prong: Nah it doesn't self manage. I just take it off the charger at 80-85% (It has a digital percentage readout).

            • @dreamscene: self manage would be DJI FPV type smart batteries where the circuit is built in the battery (for self discharge control etc)

              • +1

@randomdude14: With 8 Ah battery in the Aldi steel deck, you never have to charge to 100% even for a 400 sqm lawn, keep it at 80%, discharge to around 40% when using it and it will extend the battery's lifespan 2-3 x, possibly reaching 10 years of use for the battery (if the mower does not konk out before hand). Much better than 4Ah battery and needing to charge it 100% for every use for larger lawns which would degrade the battery faster.

                • @dreamscene: good to know. I managed to get one but ended up doing the first charge to 100% :(

Did the full lawn only dropped to 70% so I'd leave it at that.

I guess next time I'll just charge to 80% just before mowing and then leave it at around 50% ?

                  • @randomdude14: Initial 1-2 charges to 100% is good. Then subsequent charges go to a max 85% charge when using and then storing the battery at 50-55% charge for next use is the perfect sweet spot for these types of batteries and the days you need max 100% charge on over grown grass or if using other Aldi tools etc at the same time, you can charge to 100% for the convenience time saving factor. The 21700 cell 8.0Ah battery in the Aldi Steel Deck gives so much run time so you never have to charge it to 100% thus increasing it's lifespan and could be finally a battery that can last 10 years without replacement. I have waited for 8.0Ah battery systems for years at a reasonable cost and this was perfect. Currently, nothing in the Ozito mower range can compete with the Aldi Steel Deck 2 x 8.0Ah Brushless Mower especially at the $299 discounted price.

                    • @dreamscene: Thank you! great advise. It sure is a great deal at $299 - no trouble doing the full lawn, somewhat overgrown too. very happy with it. Wish it would work with Aldi Xfinity series or any other tools too. (like phones, they should really unify these tool batteries to avoid landfill)

                      • @randomdude14: The 8.0Ah Aldi Ferrex Pro battery works with other Aldi Xfinity tools too. (It's a similar size to the old 18650 cell 4Ah battery). As for using these batteries on other brand tools, you can get a 3D printed $40 Ferrex Battery adaptor that will let it work with Ozito tools. Saying that, you can pickup a 4.0ah Ozito battery for $50 on special so wasting money on battery adaptors is a moot point unless you really need that 8.0Ah battery capacity. Here is a link if you are interested. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/brisbane-city/power-tools/al…

            • @dreamscene: Ahh yeah nice. I do similar if I have ended up discharging a battery quite low.

I find my smart plug setup useful for managing this too, since I am super forgetful. The Ozito batteries don't have a percentage read out, but it's easy to figure out roughly were specific charge levels are, and how long it takes to reach.

So I plug in my batteries to charge, then have the smart plug cut power after a set time. I have some scribbled times taped to the shelf above the chargers.

I used to trigger it via my phone, but now I do it via a spare Google Home Mini in the garage. (the same thing works via voice on my phone too)

So basically while I am putting the mower away, I say "Hey Google, turn on charger for 30 minutes." (the smart plugged is called "charger" in my setup)

One catch -with Google Home you can't schedule smart plugs, because of safety. But you can just set the device (in my case, a Mirabella Genio Smart plug) to be defined as a light. Then it works fine.

  • Anyone know if the Aldi Ferrex mowers folds down like the Ryobi models??

  • Regarding the previous steel deck Aldi Mower from last month (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/725387) on sale for $399.00 and reduced to $299.00 in some Aldi's.
This morning Aldi Marrickville Metro had these on special for $199.00. Not sure if this price applies to other Aldi. stores.

    • How many were left?

    • That’s a steal.

    • Cheers man, just bought the last one. Wolli creek aldi still have 3-4 stock left although at $299

      • Good timing, sunny weather today. Be sure to give a mini review here after the first mow. For me, the battery is massive in the steel deck model and I can do my whole 300 sqm lawn and only use 30% of the battery. Not having to use the battery below 50% I think will increase its lifecycle by 2x. Could be the first battery system with a large enough capacity in this price range to never worry about mow time and truly could cover 700 Sqm of lawn comfortably on a single charge. It’s light weight for a steel deck (21kg with batteries) and seems well built enough. The negatives I found are narrow handle bars with thin rim, I have wide shoulders, I will need to put a grip foam / gel or tape to make it more comfortable. Handle bar doesn’t fully fold, only the top half folds. The plastic push button switch doesn’t feel it will last more than 2 years but mower has 5 years warranty so not too worried about that. The power and battery capacity for the price is leagues ahead of any Ozito currently available including the Ozito’s seasonal stock of the steel deck model. Quite happy with mine.

        • +1

Haven't tried the mower but I have tried the 5 in tools. Very powerful compare to 18v ozito that I've been using. Battery lasts forever with 8ah from the mower. Heavy af though.

          • @Jackgumtreeau: Heavy? As heavy as a petrol unit you reckon with the trimmer head attachment?

  • Anyone in Sydney willing to sell the Aldi steel decked one in case you haven't opened it yet? Willing to pay more than the clearance price

    • +1

Try a few local stores. Could get lucky.

    • Are you still looking for one? I just got one as Xmas present from my friend

  • Anyone have any thoughts on how this compares to the Aldi one for $249 with 2 x batteries?
    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-29-…

    • That is the same mower as this deal?

      • Oops - I meant the bunnings ones, such as:
        https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-brushless-lawn-mow…

        • The Aldi one is a much much better deal. Much bigger, more powerful, better batteries etc.

That Ozito mower is much smaller, and only 18v. It's a fine mower for a small lawn but nothing special. And don't get me wrong, Ozito gear is generally great and I have the bigger steel deck Ozito mower. But that Aldi deal is great and it is worth seeing if there is still stock anywhere.

  • The 5 in 1 Garden tool is currently discounted from $199 to $139 at Casula Aldi. Many in stock, I counted 11 today afternoon at 5pm.

  • I purchased a Ryobi ONE+ 18 V 3 piece Garden Care Kit form Bunnings Thomastown for $399 in store. It was on 'Black Friday deals' here https://www.bunnings.com.au/campaign/black-friday but later they remowed the link. There are still few unpoened box piled up in the rear corridor.
Not yet opened the box yet, it says 2x4.0 Ah battery and one charger, along with mower, blower and trim (not with blade one, with string).
I have small back and front yard and nature strip, veteren ozito electric kit still working well, but I am sick of with the cable. the previous same Ryobi kits were on Bunnings for $349 but with 1X4.0Ah and 1X2.0 Ah batteries. I dont want trim with blade one with which comes ozito kits.
Is it good, to wait for oziti kit and replace w/o opening it? whats your thoughts guys?

  • Here's a review of the 2x20V steeldeck Aldi with 8ah batteries which some ppl say is more 'powerful'. Just used it once so far. Got through maybe 40sqm on full charge, felt like maybe 30-40min. Half of that was 30cm grass at highest setting so I went back and forth with push and tug to prevent cutouts. Less powerful than my modest no-name sub$200 B&S petrol motor (sale price from about 6 years ago), It sounded like it might cutout on the lowest height setting on the 5cm grass sections so raised it a bit there. I was expecting with 8ah batteries it would easily do the lawn even with the extra push-tug method so that is disappointing (maybe it's a new battery thing?). It's ok, just don't expect a miracle is all I'm saying, this isn't close to replacing petrol if you need grunt power and stamina. Good for the $200 sale price I got it for. Batteries may be useful with an adapter to other brand tools but can't think of anything Ferrex worth using them in unless I find a clearance price on a backup tool.

    • Just completed remaining patch of 40cm high grass about 10-15sqm on full charge. At end was 50% charge left. Then Tried to re-mow the section I cut earlier today at medium low height setting but motor slowed too much due to the thick earlier clippings so I gave up. I believe the low height settings are only suitable for well kept fine type bowling lawn on firm ground, not suitable on spongy lawns imo as I had grunt issues earlier with 5cm spongy grass. Considering the battery drain rate I'm glad I only paid $200.

      • Only positive for me over my old cheapy is electric is lighter and less tiring. The battery convenience factor is overrated: to ensure longevity of these expensive batteries you still need to manage the process of letting batteries cool before charging, remembering to not overcharge them, then cooling again before using, so it's not simply running flat then set and forget. Would be better if it automated all that with a chip. It's not silent either, only slightly less noisy.
