[Pre Order] Apple TV 4K (2022): Wi-Fi 64GB $219, Wi-Fi + Ethernet 128GB $249 Delivered @ Apple

16915

Apple has released plans to lower the price and upgrade the Apple TV 4K on November 4th, providing considerable value over the current model.
The 2022 Apple TV 4K with 128gb of storage and A15 processor retails for $249, compared to $279 for the 2021 model with 64gb of storage and A12 processor.
The 2022 Apple TV 4K with 64gb of storage and A15 processor, but without ethernet port, retails for $219, compared to $249 for the 2021 model with 32gb of storage and A12 processor with ethernet port included.

Yes, this will be the new RRP for these models, however as these models seemed to offer value over the current models in terms of both price and features, I thought it was worth posting. Certainly, do not buy the previous models at RRP if you're looking at buying an Apple TV 4K before November 4th.

Available from 4 November.

Be aware, the 64GB version doesn't come with Thread (which is very important for smart home setup), nor an ethernet port (don't think this is important anyway).
which is very different to the previous model.

    Previous model spec: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP845?viewlocale=en_US&locale=e…
    Current model spec: https://www.apple.com/au/apple-tv-4k/specs/

    • +1

I prefer ethernet. Its not appealing to me without ethernet

      • +1

And they charge $30 extra for this and extras 64G of storage…
wtf am I gonna do with 128G of storage in Apple TV… If I want to play games I have switch and PC (or if you have PS5/Xbox)

        • I might bite and get a 2nd Apple TV if the now-previous model goes down to about $160. Nothing I do on the Apple TV warrants a high CPU. I just do film/TV streaming.

          • @Skullytor: You're actually right, comparing previous model to this new 128G ones, the only differences are:
            * USB-C port for remote minus charging cable (they took out the charging cable as well)
            * less storage (I only stream anyway)
            * HDR10+
            * better CPU
            * lighter due to fan removed (who even cares about the weight of a TV box sits on TV cabinet that no one ever moves…)

            • @timliu1996: I hate it how they take out cables. Costs them maybe a few bucks to make but then sell it for $20+
And I don't buy this environmental waste stuff - people don't throw out lightning cables - they use them.

              • +1

@Skullytor: I've got 3 or 4 lightning cables sitting in a drawer still wrapped around the cardobard, so I understand why at this point they don't include then with all devices.

Apple New products meant nothing except iOS

  • +14

Thankyou for posting this, I wasn't aware of the upgrade. Ignore the naysayers, this was worthy of a post in my opinion. The price change represents a bargain/deal in itself.

  • -8

    LOL RRP isn't a deal

    • +6

You would prefer to spend $30 more for less? Each to our own I guess.

      • -3

No. But I also wouldn't consider that I have got a bargain when I'm just paying full retail price.

  • +2

No ethernet is a deal breaker, wifi is still way too sketchy and unreliable

    • +5

The new $249 model includes ethernet and 4 times the storage of the previous $249 model, plus upgraded processor.

      • and is $50 more expensive than 2021 base model with ethernet. You are now compelled to buy higher model to get ethernet.

    • im leaning this way too

  • +9

Thanks for posting I think this is a deal because not everyone follows tech news closely and could have spent the same money buying last gen products with worse specs if they are on the fence of buying one.

    • +5

Thanks, that was my thought as well. The new models go on sale in 2 weeks, anyone buying in that time would be missing out on a price cut and new features.

  • +3

Come join me in the naughty corner OP! I posted the RRP xbox series x deal today.

    • +7

Plenty of upvotes for both deals; great to see the majority of the community can see the value represented in both posts.

  • +3

Its not a deal as others have said but I won't downvote as the info was useful to me.
I think its time to keep an eye on retailers for runnout pricing on the old apple TV. That is how I got mine last year

    This pricing is heading in the right direction;
    https://www.amazon.com.au/2021-Apple-32GB-5th-Generation/dp/…

    • So 2021 32GB is $199. And I found 64GB is $219.
So the 64GB 2021 is $219 and the 128GB 2022 is $249. So you are still paying more.
I think it makes sense if you wait to get the 64GB 2022 instead of the 64GB 2021 since they are the same price $219.

      • I am hoping there will be a sale like last time. Where they dropped to around $170 (run-out models)

        • I have the original 4K 32GB and I think I paid $159 back when it went on sale.
If you are using it just for streaming you don't really need that much storage. You can't really copy anything like videos onto the Apple TV, so the only reason you need more storage is if you have tonnes of Apps or install and play games on it. I only have a few apps installed they don't even fill up the home screen.

Some comments here are saying the 2022 128GB model with ethernet port is necessary for local streaming ultra high quality video like 4K bluray quality video files. But the 128GB of storage is not really necessary IMO. To save some money I would just wait for the previous 2021 4K models to drop in price which have ethernet port on all storage models as well.
So I agree with waiting for a sale for under $170 2021 4K model.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: $159? JB HI-FI? Maybe thats the deal I got, cant remember

            • @Skullytor: Yeah I think I price matched JB HiFi price at The Good Guys. It was for 2017 32GB 4K model quite a long time ago I think, not the 2021 4K model.

              • @harshbdmmaster718: lol - i dont even know what model I have then. But I got in last year I am sure. It has the black touch remote

                • @Skullytor: "It has the black touch remote"

Yeah that's 2017 4K model. I have the same black remote. Some people really hated the remote but once I got used to it I really like it.

  • +8

If you can hold out for another month, Apple should be offering a $70 Apple GC with this purchase (as part of Black Friday sales). See 2020 and 2021. Stack with the occasional Apple GC deal from Colesworth/Big W, and the deal gets even sweeter :)

    • +3

And that would be an actual deal

    • please post deal if it occurs

  • +10

I like how this effectively equates to a price drop on Apple TV, yet OP is getting slammed for sharing. Their rationale makes sense; if you are in the market for an Apple TV and jump on Amazon right now, you're paying more money for a technically inferior product (though you could argue about the exclusion of ethernet on the base model). Then a few posts below there's a post for the Xbox Series X, a near two-year-old product, at RRP with 200+ upvotes.

    • +2

Why is it a price drop? its a new model of a product.

    • +3

People don't want Ozbargain turning into a place for new tech announcements, which is literally what this so called deal is.
If someone does so little research that they would go straight to amazon and hit buy then what makes you think they will think let me check Ozbargain first?

Googling "Apple TV 4k" has news articles at the top of the pate showing a new Apple TV have been announced at a lower price. zero need for this to be posted here.

  • +1

Maybe this is why the shipment in the below deal was 4th Nov……
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/725422

  • +1

For those looking, the new base 64GB does not have Thread support (if that's important to you for your smart home) and Ethernet port that the previous gen had. The 128GB model retains both of these features.

In the US the 128GB is now the price of the old 32GB base model while the new 64GB model is even cheaper, which makes this a pretty significant price drop from the previous gen. Unfortunately price adjustments due to exchange rate means we don't get as significant a price drop.

I'd wait a few extra weeks for Black Friday as Apple has been doing bonus Apple Gift Cards the past few years too.

    • Genuinely curious what thread support means? Do you mean multi threaded support?

      • It’s an automation standard I think

      • It is a communication standard for home automation devices (e.g. sensors, power meters). It is better than having 10 devices on your Wi-Fi.

        • Weird that they would remove it. But it is Apple after all.

  • -1

    this is RRP

  • +3

To everyone negging saying 'this is RRP' and "not a deal', I cant see anything in the rules about RRP items not being allowed in the deals section but happy to be corrected.

The voting guidelines go on to say these comments are inappropriate uses of negative vote and if you think it belongs in the forums report it to the mods..

    • +2

The problem with the current neg system is that you’re forced to comment.

If you could just down vote and not comment. You down vote. You move on. It would stop a lot of these basically useless comments from being made. They don’t add anything of value.

      • That would allow people to spam neg votes without anyone having the ability to report the comment/neg vote as invalid.

They need to remove the ability for neg votes on comments to remove valid neg votes.

        • -1

Valid point. Maybe limit it to 1 negative deal vote a day and max 3 a month or something. Either way the current system favours comments of no substance.

          • +1

@checkingthisout: The initial comment/reason for the neg vote should be placed next to there name when you click "Votes" as well as a button to report said votes as invalid

  • PSA: Don't buy the Wi-Fi only model unless you have great Wifi and only plan on using streaming apps on it. If you want to say, use a Plex server to feed uncompressed 4K rips to your ATV, Wi-Fi will be inadequate.

  • No 120hz??

    • It has HDMI 2.1 but not mention of 120hz. Thats the only thing holding me from pulling the trigger for this one. Maybe a software update or missed announcement

      • Why would you need 120hz - wouldn't say gaming is a primary focus of this device.

      • even if it was 120hz what would you use it for there isn't a game from the app store that can do 120fps lol

  • -3

    OzRRP

  • Phwoah…!!! Literally unbelievable for only $249 RRP!

  • No ethernet port on the base model is pretty annoying, since I have no need for more storage - luckily no real reason to upgrade from the existing 4K versions already deployed in the house.

  • +1

RRP is not a deal. If every price reduction gets posted the site becomes junk.

  • Since the day I bought my Samsung smart TV with an ability to mirror from my iphone, I never needed my apple TV.

  • Not a deal

  • +4

Wow, A15 processor for Apple TV. That should be quite zippy.

    • It’s total overkill. Faster than some PCs. I’ll take it though!

  • +4

Thanks for posting this one mate. Appreciate it.
and haters can keep on hating.

  • This is RRP. I know others have said exactly this, but I'll say it again because… you know, reasons.
I may add a LOL to stress I understand that it might save people from buying the inferior and more expensive older model, but it's matter of principle… and it's Apple, right?

  • RRP is not ozbargain deal. Any price lower than RRP or previous lowest price then I will call it an ozbargain deal. :)

    • But it is lower than the previous lowest price and lower than the current RRP for an Apple TV 4K?

  • whats new about this one? and is it work upgradeing from a 3rd gen?

    • Compared to the last model it's the A15 processor (same as iPhone 14), compared to the A12 which is now 3 years old. Memory has been doubled for each price point, plus those prices reduced by $30. If you're upgrading from the 3rd gen Apple TV you'll get a much faster processor and graphics, 4K TV output with Dolby Vison, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, better Wifi and bluetooth, plus thread networking with the 128gb model.

  • maybe I should wait for an 8k model.

    • Technically these models should be capable of 8K. Whether Apple provides that as a software update in the years to come or if they charge for the upgrade is another story.

  • +1

    Thanks OP.
was about to purchase Apple TV.
Will look out for the new one coming soon.

  • -1

    RRP is not a deal

  • -2

Apple suckers will pay anything with the apple sticker on it. This is not a BARGAIN

  • What apple tv can offer compares to a Sony with Google tv?

  • Can you load Kodi on this? I have been using NVIDIA Shield and wondering if this is worth the upgrade.

    TIA

    • No you can’t, but there is an app called MrMC that runs the Kodi interface, but add ons are not available.

  • Since when RRP becomes a valid reason to neg a deal?

  • With the Aussie dollar’s recent pivot toward Monopoly money, it makes sense for Apple to raise prices across the board. Let’s hope it happens sooner rather than later

  • -1

Thanks for the press release I guess, but I’d be looking for a bargain not RRP when I’m ready to buy another aTV and there’s rarely stock issues so no urgency. I guess this is where ozbargain is heading though when new titles added to streaming services started counting as a ‘bargain’ too.

  • I don't get the hate for RRP (or it's for Apple?) either. Also mods can confirm, but I think those who keep saying 'post in forums' just don't know, or don't want to know, that the majority of visitors just visit the front page and hardly go to forums to find posts about PSAs or RRPs.

Anyway, I just wonder if it's worth adding the tag [RRP] to this deal and similar ones, so that the 'purists' can just filter them out, like they could with the [SUBS].

  • -1

Have no interest in this product but upvoted because the screw the anti-RRP losers

  • +2

    RRP is not a deal

  • +4

After the last 2 yrs of GPU 'deals' people are negging this.
    lol smh

  • What does the storage matter?? I have a 64gb and can’t think of why I’d need more

FWIW mine is connected on Wifi and it has never been a problem for me. Ethernet is better but I don’t think anyone will notice.

  • -2

This is not a deal unless you show us how to get 15% off discounted Apple gift cards first. Fat chance!

  • Even if it’s not a “bargain”, this post is still of value. Thanks OP.

  • Without looking actually into it, it's disappointing you have to pay more for a ethernet jack.

    • How are you paying more if the high end version with the ethernet jack is the same price as the previous low end version? If anything, you're paying the same as before.

      • An ethernet jack should be built into either model. It's a standard for reliability. You shouldn't have to pay more just to have one.

        • Damn right nothing beats ethernet with lowest storage option just for pure streaming purpose unlike Nvidia devices with USB ports option where double storage makes sense, before even thinking of 8k streaming future compatibility as a possible TvOS feature using upgraded hardware

  • Pay for ethernet what a joke! would absolutely nothing to their BOM just another way to squeeze a bit extra out of consumers. 120hz would have been nice.

  • I'm currently using the 2021 Apple TV 4K 32gb. Will the new A15 processor provide a noticeable difference in speed when using apps and selecting content?

    • I feel like if you have the 2021 version there's not real need for an upgrade at this time. If you have found any graphically intense games on the app store that you're playing then you might see some benefit, but for streaming I don't think you would notice any difference at this stage.

      • Thanks - will wait for M chip ATV!

        • You don't need super SoC performance like you say M series chip, with current chips providing more than enough power for a smooth UI experience.
It's actual bit streaming where M series chip can play a role in enabling new audio video decoders for smoother playback and possibly enable 8k streaming provided you get features like dual LAN ports on higher models for aggregated bandwidth or supporting 10GbE. Then more storage for buffering the stream makes a whole lot of sense.
This does require lightning speed reasonably priced under $100 per month internet unheard of in Australia, but possible in NZ.

For casual gaming 2022 model does provide more power but for any serious gaming you will likely be using a different device.

  • +2

$249 is a deal considering the outgoing model is $279.
A15 chip and USB-C remote. I'll be getting one.

  • +2

RRP is not a deal… That is what I would NORMALLY say to this category of posts.

But this post in particular I like. Android boxes are a huge market and a lot of users here including myself have a high interest in them.

Because you listed a detailed and easy-to-absorb comparison within your post, made me glad to read it. Thanks, OP!
