Missing deals on front page

I'm a regular checker of OzBargain but I've found recently that some of the deals don't show on the front page until about a day later. For example, I didn't see the HTC Cha Cha deal yesterday but this morning I find it on the front page with 100 votes! Same with the Google Play deal.

I have set my deal preference to 10 but hasn't seem to make a difference.

Any ideas on what's going on?

  • Hmm. The default min votes for front page is 20 votes, and the first deal to show up at the moment is the one that is 70+ votes for the SGS3.

I just played with my own settings to so that min votes are 10, and now the first one on the front page is the Jetstar deal

Are you saying that you can't see any 10+ deals even after you change your settings to minvotes of 10?

  • +1

This has happened to me before. I posted a deal as I couldn't see it on the site (including searching). Low and behold I get flamed saying its a dupe and 'I should learn to read before posting' so I've experienced it too :/

    • If it happens again, do give us some details so we can investigate, thanks.

    • OzBargain's search re-index new pages every hour so if you "just post" a deal it's not likely to be searable…

    • The store page is useful for determining if a deal has been posted before. e.g. for BigW, go to http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/bigw.com.au.

There are also tag pages: e.g. for PS3, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/ps3

  • @moocher - no, I can see most of the deals with 10+ after changing the setting but some didn't show on the front page until this morning. However, I just checked again with my setting set to a min votes of 10 and these aren't showing on the front page.

When I set it back to the default, they show again on the front page.

These are just examples…it's happened to me before with other deals as well.

    • When the settings are min votes = 10, those two deals turn up on the second page. Just want to make sure that you scrolled to the next page?

      • Lol…hey look…there they are!

My bad…maybe I'm going insane but I'm sure it's happened before though…will keep an eye out.

        Cheers

        • No worries, do let us know if you observe strange behaviour again.

  • Hi.Can i ask how i change my settings to see the deals with max.votes please?I am not sure where to go to change them.Thanks.

    • The minimum vote settings are on the new deals page. Hover over "Deals" in the top orange menu, then click on "New Deals". You will see a "Preference" tab at the top of that page. There you will see a few settings you can tweak.

  • Thank you so much moocher….would never have guessed that in a million years.

  • I think it would be better if the settings were in the normal account settings. They seem to be a bit hidden in the new deals page.

  • This conversation is a decade old but I'm facing the same issue.

When I browse to https://www.ozbargain.com.au I see fewer deals than if I browse to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals

Can't the homepage (without the extra path info) show everything by default? Not sure what the thinking is behind hiding a random assortment of deals from the homepage, forcing us to go down a directory?

    • Front page shows "popular deals", i.e. deals voted up by the community users. It has been this way for the last 15 years. Most people just want to see what's popular right now, instead of seeing a sea of mediocre deals. If you prefer the new deals page, just bookmark it in your browser.

      • Thanks for the clarification. I'll do that as I'd prefer to decide my own mediocre vs good deals, rather than let the community decide for me!
