Thanks OP. 1 kg Barramundi = 250g Scotch fillet seems a great deal here for vitamin sea

    • I sea what you did there..

    • +2

      Yum!

      • +3

you're god damn right, sun of the beach

    • 1 kg Barramundi = 250g Scotch fillet ?

  • +3

    Farmed or wild caught?

      • +11

        settle gretel

      • Did he seriously say that!?

      • -1

So… all politicians then, especially given during WWII we fought against the Nazis, but the current PM is funding them.

    • +1

How do you find out if it is farmed or wild caught and where do you buy fish that is wild caught, would like to get Salmon to see the taste difference.
Tried fish shops but Salmon is pink, think wild caught are more white greyish looking

      • +11

They're different species. The white/greyish is Australian Salmon, easily caught at the beach/rocks (just ask any fisherman!)
The pink one is Atlantic Salmon which is farmed in Tasmania and is non-native.

      • +4

Farmed salmon are pink because they feed it a special colouring agent.
        https://www.choice.com.au/food-and-drink/meat-fish-and-eggs/…

        • +8

just to add, wild caught salmon are pink because of their natural diet

          • @TEER3X: natural diet? please define.

            • +1

@Hasbulla: It comes from a certain crustacean they eat. Farmed salmon is toxic sh*t.

              • @thurston4pm: Not quite applicable, I'd say.
Unfortunately, the natural pink flesh one you're describing is not available in Australia.
Imports of fresh and frozen salmon have been effectively banned in Australia under the Quarantine Act since 1975.

                • +1

@Hasbulla: You asked for an explanation on how wild salmon get their pink coloured flesh through natural diet…. It comes from a compound that is in a certain crustacean they eat. Thats the answer.

              • +1

                @thurston4pm:

                Farmed salmon is toxic sh*t.

Really? How bad are we talking about?

            • @Hasbulla: Feaces from kayakers and campers.

      • +1

You can get wild Alaskan red sockeye in coles and wild barramundi from the fridge sections.

        • Costco too, frozen which is how I prefer to buy fish unless it's guaranteed fresh.

A very different taste to Atlantic Salmon. It's not cheap, about $48/kg but so good.

Hadn't noticed that Coles stocked it and having just checked online it came up as "temporarily unavailable". Not a problem, going to Costco tomorrow!

      • +4

The Salmon at supermarkets is NOT native to Australia. If you want to try wild caught Salmon check the tinned stuff to see if it is wild caught.

OZ Salmon is not very good for eating and most fishermen throw it back or feed it to the dogs or keep it for bait.

        • +1

Depends on what type… Blue salmon is meh, threadfin (king) salmon is great

      • Of course given the overfishing of edible species worldwide, farm bred is pretty clearly LESS damaging to the environment than wild caught. Generally fresher too, for logistic reasons.

    • +1

This size is farmed for sure.

Wild are huge which they use for fillet

    • Definitely farmed

  • -2

The tegal chickens only has 6-7 pieces in the pack, you're better off getting the $9.95 KFC Tuesdays

    • +3

The KFC deal comes once every blue moon now

      • +1

        It's every tuesday~~

        • +4

          Not in every State…

    • +1

The Tegel chicken portions feel miles less greasy than anything from KFC.

      • +3

Tegel chicken portions feel miles less greasy

Yuck, why would you eat Tegel then

      • +1

i honestly wasnt a fan of them.
        the burgers however, excellent

  • +3

I have never bought any barramundi that tasted good at a supermarket. They always have that digusting earthy taste. Yuck.

    • +1

These are quite good, I purchase the whole barramundi often.
Hope their supply will be good over the coming week and it does not sell out.
Good buy, the first time I've seen it on the weekly special catalogue.
The amount of things I can make with the whole barramundi is brilliant.

      • +1

Whats the best way to cook these?

Are they fresh enough to do steamed with ginger and shallots?

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F9X9pO-RII

        • +5

I'd argue that there is no "best" way to cook these. There are just different ways. Barramundis are super tasty fish. So you can't go too wrong with these.

Here's a channel that I have subscribed to which I find really good. So many recipes that are interesting to watch. I wish I could understand Cantonese/Mandarin (whatever he's speaking) so I didn't have to read the subtitles and miss bits of the video. Anyway ,enjoy!

          https://youtu.be/NaiL0SeTz_s

          • +3

@Mr Frodo: Canto. The subtitles are on point, I don't think he misses anything his dad says. The only thing that bothers me lol is when his dad says something is good and he translates it as beautiful in English.

        • Correct you can steam and or you can bung it in the oven for 30 minutes.
Best recipe to top it off is adding the ginger raw sliced and peeled by adding it to the cooked fish.
Then adding oil, sugar, shallot and soy on low heat untilit bubbles then its ready to pour over the cooked whole barramundi.

    • Wild caught netted Barra don't taste good because they've had a long and traumatic death. I sometimes spear Barra and within seconds of the shot they're necked so bled out and dead quickly. Taste sooo much better that way. Blood is gone. Adrenaline is hardly there.

    • The whole barras around my Woolies/ Coles always look mangled and almost junk quality. Costco ones look alot more palatable.

    • I heard the opposite from a fisherman… he said wild Barra tastes like dirt so you have to get farmed so they haven't been swimming in mud to avoid the dirt taste!?

  • +10

Tegel Burgers air fried would be the closest tasting to KFC, i personally hate frozen chicken too however i cant fault these burgers. 5 a pack. $1.40 each break them out whenever you want! cant go wrong! even the brioche buns from aldi 4 pack for 2-3 dollars its a great feed for cheap on the fly.

    • +3

I wasn't that impressed with the chicken pieces and the instructions on the packet are wrong. It says 45mins in an airfryer, that's overkill! Mine was starting to become burnt in the 25min mark

      • -2

The chicken pieces are no good. The tip top potato buns go well to with the burgers

        • +4

Really. Im inlove with the chicken pieces.
          Burger are delcious too
Cant wait for next 50% off this week

          • +1

@easternculture: how do you cook your chicken pieces, haven't tried mine yet, don't want to destroy them.

            burgers are pretty decent.

            • -2

@TEER3X: Philips Air fryer 175 degrees for 25 minutes.

They end up nice and juicy from the inside and crispy from outside.

Saying that, i like my meat rare to medium rare

              • +5

@easternculture: The thought or rare, or even medium rare chicken makes me feel a little sick.

              • +2

@easternculture: Why does the packet tell us to cook it for 45min in the air fryer?

                • +1

@Homr: Dunno. I found over 30 min in airfryer at 180 degrees burns the outer crust

                • +1

@Homr: They should add a note on wattage the time is based upon. Air fryers have varied (and each have variable) outputs as we know.
Wonder why they don't acknowledge this?

    • for salad i collected a large kfc coleslaw extra side!

      finna try it out tomox

  • Anyone with good sense of taste and have tried Maxibon I have a question. Do you think that the ice cream quality of Maxibon is really bad compared to other similar brands? I had one of the biggest stomach ache from this

    • +3

Something Fishy is going on there

      • hmm..do you think that was just the packaged date?

  • +1

I cant stand farmed Barra, taste like mud. Go the extra cost if you can and get fresh wild caught barra, the taste difference is amazing.

    • +1

Unless you live where the wild fish are the wild caught barra will always be less fresh than the farmed stuff. Think about the logistics of getting it to you.

      • +2

Freshwater barra has nothing on saltwater barra.

The salt water almost marinates itself

        • +1

          exactly:)

      • You can get it at sydney fish markets at times.Same as lobsters from Tassy:)

      • +2

I would take frozen wild caught saltwater barra over farmed freshwater barra cooked five minutes after it was caught all day, every day.

Fresh water barra tastes like the bottom of an aquarium.

  • +3

    Allergen may be present
Crustacean, Egg, Gluten, Milk, Peanuts, Sesame Seeds, Soybeans, Sulphites, Tree Nuts

I appreciate the barra is farmed, but WTF are they feeding it?

    • +13

Crustacean, Egg, Gluten, Milk, Peanuts, Sesame Seeds, Soybeans, Sulphites, Tree Nuts

  • +1

Frozen chicken and Maxibons. Anyone seen a deal on chest freezers?

  • +2

Can't see Woolies having any stock available of the fish.
It could be priced $2 a kilo, won't matter if we can't buy any?
I did a click and collect order last night, for an order, 19 items.
13 of these were unavailable…like, seriously? That's just ridiculous.

The other week, I went for a pick up of my click and collect order, and said, where's the rest of it, a couple tins of John West flavoured tuna and some microwave popcorn. The rest? Out of stock……

    • +1

The only time i got whole barra at $2 per kilo was 2 years ago during the height of the pandemic.
Cheapest these days is $10 or $15 per kg with a store special.

Sorry to hear a lot of those items were unavailable that you ordered.

  • +1

im interested in the maxibon waffle

what happen to vu with the half price catalogue?

  • The Tegal take outs portion 1kg pack is $7 already according to the link, must be a two week special

  • Maxibon Waffle On are made in Italy?

  • +1

Does anyone actually buy this chicken at full price?

    • +1

How often is it on sale? I only found out about it a couple of weeks ago when it was half price, now it's on sale again.

      • +2

It seems like it's been on sale, at one store or the other, every 2-3 weeks since it came out.

    • Frankly for the amount you get, i definitely wouldnt want to pay full price, i think a fair price is this 50% off price otherwise i may as well buy fast food fried chicken and get someone else to cook it for me and will end up being similar price to what i get in the packet if i pay full price.

      • Chicken burgers are minimum $10 for a decent one at shops .

Tegal at half price with low carb buns at $1.50 each, a burger would cost just over $3.50 factoring tomato and lettuce.

        Def a win for me

  • +1

Thanks OP. Barra, watch out 🍽️

  • Does anyone know when you can order the Wednesday specials from woolworths using online delivery - is it not until after 12.01am hits on Wed morn that the prices change?

    • +1

It's some time around after 1amish.

  • do they clean/gut/de-scale the barra ?

    • +1

No, as is where is if you can find them.

      • I ordered this morning for Sunday though they've taken it off the app and website temporarily until stock is available then it will be on the app and website.
Either no stock today or out of stock today.
Plesse try searching tomorrow on the app or website.

        • +1

The 4 stores that I passed by and checked this morning had no stock and three said that they normally do not get whole barra.

    • +1

I don't think they do as i always purchase them uncleaned inside.

  • +1

When ordering whole barra online I can only purchase by weight. If I wanted to buy a single whole fish, what is the best value to specify? Should I overshoot the expected weight and specify in the shoppers notes that I want a single whole fish? Is there a OzBargain approved optimal number for maximum value for single (or multiple fish)?
What do people expect a single one of these fish to weigh?

    • +1

They vary sometimes they are 500g, 700g and up to 1kg.

      • +1

Mine ended up being 650-700g and came scaled and (more or less) gutted.
Also successfully got the chicken burgers.

  • Limited stores have the whole barra.

    • They have them sometimes on the weekday at limited stores though better availability usually on the weekend at some stores.

  • Sold out when I checked online early this morning

  • Couldn't find any fresh barra but my local had 1/2 price frozen morrocan style barra fillets at half price $8.50. So bought a couple of packets as a consolation and a packet of tegels lol.
