These sales seem to be on every week lately.. maybe they just need to have this as their normal price ;)

  • Just bought the Dell U2412M Monitor ! wooot

  • Could anyone comment on what the U2412M is like for prolonged web browsing/reading text?

    • I'm going out on a limb here, but it'd be a lot like using another monitor

      • No. Well, it depends on the monitor you are comparing it to. I was specifically referring to the supposedly aggressive AG coating that might make the screen difficult on the eyes when viewing white backgrounds. It is fairly obvious that not all monitors are the same.

        • I've never had a problem with prolonged use with the anti-glare coat on my current monitor.

Many years ago I remember changing from CRT to LCD and hating it!

  • Weighing up on whether U2412M is worth the extra $100 over the ST2420L for graphics design type work and some light gaming?

    • Same. Absence of HDMI is a drawback though. Found Samsung 23 inch 120Hz for roughly the same price:

      http://www.estore.com.au/Samsung_S23B950_23_Inch_3D_LED_Moni…

      • Gee, that Sammy is an attractive looking monitor; aside from the lack of HDMI, anyone know of how the U2412M compares performance/picture quality wise?

        • +2

          Samsung is 1920 x 1080 Pixels, 23"
          ST2420L is 1920 x 1080, 24"
          U2412M is 1920 x 1200, 24"

I would say the U2412M is worth it for the 16:10 aspect ratio alone (and IPS) - can't stand 16:9 :P

If you are using it for graphics design you would definitely want the IPS panel

        • Thanks for the compare Agret, much appreciated;

I'm not using it for graphics design, but still mostly doc creation, to which the 16:9 ratio would be pretty annoying!

        • Excuse my noobiness, why would 16:9 be annoying for doc creation? I'll be doing a lot of that…

        • +1

I was a bit confused by it at first too, but then I used the wife's MacBook Air, and it drives me nuts - I'm someone who likes to see where they've come from or where they're going to when in a document/e-mails, and a wider aspect sucks for that - you either get stupidly large font (i.e. page width) or just lots of white (or grey) space on either side of the document (zoomed out or whole page). Even PPT work isn't 16:9.

If the screen is large enough to get a useable side-by-side view, maybe, but I don't think a 23/24" would be large enough for that; alternatively you could do the whole swivel to portait view (for word docs), but I'm going by the shape of the stand, not sure if the Sammy allows for that…?

        • With the 16:9 you have more horizontal space than vertical. With a 16:10 you have the same amount of horizontal space but you also gain more vertical space so if you were doing document creation which is generally portrait and not landscape then you will be able to see more of your document vertically or you could use a higher zoom level and have the same viewable area. Think of another thing that is vertical that you probably do a lot of, web browsing/email. The 16:10 makes it so you can read more website/email without having to scroll so I think it is better suited for general computing tasks whereas 16:9 is focused on cinema style aspect ratio (and cost cutting for the manufacturer haha)

      • Wow this is almost worth posting as a separate deal!

This monitor is often put on par with the Benq XL2410T/2420T for gaming performance.
        And usually retails for $400~

Things to note though, it has absolutely terrible adjustment options for the screen.
You can only tilt it about 20 degrees, you can't adjust height or side-to-side, so unless you sit directly infront of this (TN panel) you will not be enjoying it.

EDIT: Just realised this isn't the 27" model. Am sad :(

Anyone have any experience with estore? Reputable?

      • Agh! OzBargain - Y UR LINKS NO OPEN IN NEW WINDOW?!

And yes, attractive monitor. I'd give my appendix for a 27" or 30" DELL, though. Just can't justify spending that much when current monitor works fine.

The minister of fun and finance sees no difference to my current 24" and the 27"/30" DELLS :(

Much in the same way she sees NO difference in a Toyota Camry and an FT-86.

sigh - One day, you will be mine.

Go to "My Account" -> "Settings"

Search for "Deals open in new window", turn it on and Save. :)

        • Thanks, mate!

    Difference between U2711($674) and U3011 ($1189) is $515.

Is with worth paying that much for extra real estate?

(Or put in an extra $159 for 2 x U2711 for the price of U3011)

  • FYI, the newest APC magazine has reviews of the 2412 and gets a 8/10. Has good blacks contrast and brightness. Only
downside is a slower refresh at 8ms but APC couldn't find any ghosting when gaming And that was priced at 399! I think I'm greeting myself one.

    • APC always gives the unbelievable high price which you can hardly see in a retail store.

  • I'm a hobbyist gamer (somewhere inbetween a casual and hardcore gamer) and I'm looking for a decent monitor priced under or around the $200 mark. I'm currently considering the ST2420L, would anyone recommend it?

I would like the U2412M but it's a bit out of my price range for what I want to spend on a monitor so that's not really an option unless it truly is worth the extra $100 or so.

For gaming an IPS screen isn't really needed. IPS is more for Photo/ video editing where colours have to be more precise, You get better viewing angles also.

Go with any Standard TN panel any under $200 would be fine, 2ms is better for less screen lag (IPS lag more in games then TN!) We have about 10 AOC cheapies at work from MSY and not a single dead/bright pixel on any of them. or any other problems what so ever! Also have Dell U2412's for graphic design aswell and they are good also but $120 more.

Or there is some IPS monitors in your price range here: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=55…

      • I bought two U2412M's and both had a dead subpixel so I won't be buying another dell monitor for myself after that! (and yes I lodged a service query almost a year ago and still am waiting for a call back)…

As a monitor however the U2412M is pretty good, just shame about their pixel policy.

        • That's a shame. Was there any backlight bleeding?

I so badly want to Neg this! I'm over dell and their "deals". Boycott as of now from me, Wont be buying from dell for myself or work computers / accessories either as i do all the purchasing there as well!

Then don't - it's not like that need your business.

      • You obviously dont run a (successful) business.

    • +1

Why, because you find it extremely hard to ignore Dell deals on ozbargain and have to make silly posts?

I'm sure Dell are quivering in their boots though! They'll probably go out of business after losing 0.0000001% of their market.

      • A sale is a sale! Simple as that.

Dell is ripping people off, and if you don't care then why the hell are you on ozb?

  • One day I'll own 3 U3011's. One day.

I mean, i could now, but apparently i have to waste money on useless stuff like fuel, food and bills.
