How Do You Store Your Rice?

Currently using a crappy tupperware style box to store rice. Was looking at airtight containers and found these
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/133872352300

Saw that sizes are fake. Eg 10kg fits 6-8 rice because they include the space to the brim where you wouldn't fill. So need 15kg to fit our 10kg bags of rice.

Just a bit surprised it's almost $60 for a container that may or may not be airtight?

We actually tried one and the lid doesn't close down properly. You can even see in the photo it's raised in some areas, so the "seal" isn't touching.

    I use a Lock & Lock rice container - https://www.amazon.com.au/Lock-HPL510-Rice-Case-Clear/dp/B00…

Seems to be on special too!

  • In the bag it came in, asian market style.

WiFE uses bay leaves in flour for weevils. should work for any food in storage.

  • scattered in the bottom of the pantry draw

    Importing 20kg sacks in a shipping container…? 🤣

I have 2 $20 aldi rice storage boxes and been using them for last 5+ years

  • I use the Kmart 5L pantry rectangular storage container with the grey lid however it doesn't fit a whole new bag of 5L rice but so far pretty airtight

In the 25kg rice bag it came in. Yet to see a problem.

  • We use the oxo pop containers for most of our pantry items. The large ones for basmati/jasmine rice (the type we use most) and medium size ones for sushi rice and short grain rice (which we don’t use as much and buy on smaller portions that can fit on those containers). Then like others here, we buy 5-10kg bags from the supermarket for basmati rice and keep it zipped or with clothes pegs and transfer that to the pop container for every day use.

At some point we bought The Healthy Baker branded flour from Woolworths and have a bunch of the containers. I only buy 5kg of rice at a time but I separate it into these containers and put them on a pantry shelf in my garage and so far everything has been fine. The labels peel off easily too.

  • I freeze my rice and flour and then store away in smaller air tight (just basic sistema clip seal) containers.

Usually find dead weevils at bottom of the container after finishing. Not a big deal so long as they arent alive and breeding etc.

An old Protein Powder bucket, good seal on it, food grade and just fits 5kg brown rice

  • In the rice bag.

In the bag it comes in

  • I use a Japanese rice dispenser. It's a game changer. It dispenses the perfect amount each time and stores perfectly in the pantry. It is also sealed from any outside bugs / dust etc

  • In my stomach!

  • 60L grain dispenser from kegking 👍

  • Rice, in its original packaging. everything else, plastic container

  • We just leave it in the big bag it came in, roll it and peg it shut. We've never had any issues, no weevils or anything. We eat rice daily. Guess it's not as humid down this end of the world.

  • This one

  • I have a Tupperware rice dispenser. Pretty handy and works well in the storage space. Holds 10kg of rice and have used for 12-13 years now and still like new. Not air tight like other Tupperware, but don’t get pests. Have it in a cupboard under the sink so don’t have to drag out the heavy container to remove the lid and measure out the rice each time. Just need to ‘dispense’ the number of cups into its in-built tray. Bought for $50 on special monthly buy back then. Mine is the ugliest colour imo though haha

Cereal container, easy to seal and pour. Roll and metal peg the rest of the bag and put it in dry place.

  • We've been using a lock and lock 12L rice case. Works great for holding a 5 or 10kg bag of rice at a time.

  • There’s rice dispenser. Can find in large Asian grocery markets.

    Or Amazon https://www.amazon.com.au/Aroma-Housewares-ARD-125-Rice-Disp…

  • Keep it in the bag it came from, there is enough head room to roll that bag and plastic liner airtight.

  • I had something like this before https://www.amazon.com.au/Cereal-Container-Metering-Storage-…
Now just store in a small tub with lid for daily use, the rest of it is kept in the rice bag it came in. Just top up the tub when needed.

  • Put the whole rice bag in the bin and place it where it's cool and dry.

Didn't know we need to store rice in a proper container. I just keep mine in the original plastic it comes with, is that bad?

  • I keep mine in a bank vault

  • +2

We do it the ozbargain way.
Leave it in the bag we bought it in. Not additional containers required. Just put it on floor of the pantry.

  • The 10kg sack it comes in. If it can sit in a warehouse for a year or so in that, then its good enough to stay in that sack in my cupboard.

    • Empty it once a year like Santa and you'll be 'right

      • It dont last that long hahahah, but yeah, i legit just get a new sack every time.

  • Inside belly for 24 hours

  • Anything that holds rice and has a lid.
Does not need to be airtight, just keep the bugs out.

    • From where?

      • Purchases off eBay a long time ago. Look it up, you might find it.

  • Very big barrel

  • Not going to help ops need to store 15kg+

I use glass jars, some like this from kmart. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/3-preserving-jars-1000ml-42…?
We usually buy 1-2kg bags, use some, store the rest in jar. Then clip the bag shut, and use it first next time if there is extra.

I only cook for 2, so I have variety, not quantity.
Jasmin, basmati, glutenous, arborio, and bomba

  • We use the big rectangle storage tubs from officeworks or simaler places. They have a snap on lid

Last week my wife bought jasmine and sticky 24kg of each.

We have never had a problem.
