Shopping Express has lower the price on Synology DS920+, one advantage of Synoology NAS is the SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) which allows more flexibility on mismatch hard drive sizes. Coupled with the Seagate Splurge with IronWolf promotion, it's a good time to build a NAS.

Furthermore, IronWolf HDD has an IHM (IronWolf Health Management) integration to NAS, if you care.

You can order IronWolf HDDs along with the NAS, the summary of checkout price is as follow

Isn't there a new model that's supposed to come out this year? At clearance this should fall to $6XX territory, if the previous model was anything to go by.

There are rumours but Synology still seems to be clinging to gigabit ethernet which is astonishing to me. Moving large amounts of data via gigabit can take a week.

    • Doesn't the ds1522+ somewhat replace this?

      • at a much higher price point of $450-500 more

Damnit, just bought DS420+ as my old NAS blew up and would have bought this for the extra $50!

Bit of price jacking here though, surely.

Computer Alliance have it for 809 on their eBay store (and had it for 730 on Afterpay Day). Umart has it for 789.

While yes, another $40 is still $40 in your pocket, the non discounted price here is a bit of a stretch.

    • Nice! The little ikea wine racks are not bad for mini equipment racks - lots of spots to be able to tie down cables.

  • It's the DS923+ is what we are waiting for. Here is a link to a comparison between the two.
Updated rumors page on when the release date is.

    • How would that compare to Qnap TS 464 ?

      • I think you can find quite a few YouTube comparisons for that. My main reason for thinking of getting a NAS is as a PLEX Server but I’m till not fully convinced.

        • What's the purpose of Plex Server ? Mainly to download videos/movies and cast on tv ?

          • @ChipsChicky: Correct. I think of it as my own person Netflix and I share my downloaded 'media' to my own home and out to about 7 family homes within Australia and the UK. It is also useful for me when I travel interstate or overseas.

            • @danielh: But with so many streaming sites, what's the purpose of downloading media etc. ?

Is it possible to give access to someone overseas, of just a single folder on NAS, for work related purpose ?

              • +2

@ChipsChicky: I don’t subscribe to anything but I guess you could subscribe to a few places each month for maybe 70% of what I’ve got.
To answer your other question, yes it is possible to share a folder but you can do that without NAS on your normal PC. I’d probably recommend opening up a BOX.net sort of account instead and share via that.

Not sure why I keep reading all this NAS stuff, one day I am gonna buy one for sure.

  • @O O how do you enter table in the description ?

  • anyone intrested in offering their services to help set one of these up?
