Best Mattress 2022

Hi all,

I'm on the market for a new King Mattress and am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options!

I've come to realise that there isn't a one option that will work for everyone, but was hoping to be set in the right direction.

In terms of budget I'm pretty flexible, I'm more focused on getting a good product. I don't have any back issues (yet).

Would be great if you can share some of your experiences and rate your favourite mattress brand.

Thanks

    Perhaps add Sleep Republic too?

    • Done, if anyone else has others to add just let me know!

      • +3

i strongly recommend sleep republic, thoroughly impressed.

if you're set on bed in a box solution just enact your fuss free returns if you're not happy.
dont feel bad, most of them donate mattresses to the homeless.

        • +2

          I know right.
After back pain with Sleeping Duck, Sleep Republic came through!

        • +2

I had years of back pain from sleeping on Ergoflex mattresses.

Switched to Sleep Republic after a ton of research and I no longer experience pain. It's super comfy too. I chose it as it's hybrid and also has more springs than other online mattresses.

It doesn't get hot AF either. Heat was a huge problem on the Ergoflex.

I'd never recommend a pure memory foam mattress due to heat, lack of support (although they're comfortable) and it's also difficult to roll around on them as there's no bounce.

        • +2

Question: where do homeless people keep their mattresses during the day?

          • @Dalton: Mobile mattress storage facilities, I had assumed /s

Lol nah good point I didn’t really delve that deep. If only ozbargain had some bed in box reps

          • @Dalton: Was thinking about that too. They're not fking light to lug around.

          • @Dalton: son of a.. made me snort and woke the wife and dog up.

Previously had a Koala for 4 years, was good to start but unfortunately developed a sag in the middle.

Have now had a Sleep Republic for 2 years and honestly the best mattress I've ever had. I was worried it would be too firm before ordering but absolutely not - it's supportive and the right amount of bouncy. The only "issue" is that it's very heavy, so changing the sheets on the king size can be a bit more challenging than I'd like since my bed frame has raised sides requiring me to lift the mattress out for each corner.

Overall love it and hasn't changed in the 2 years since buying.

    • Agreed - after doing a lot of "research" on google, we decided to settle on sleep republic. Our opinion was that spring mattresses would provide the best support and longevity whereas foam provides the most comfort. So the hybrid option was a no-brainer.
I absolutely love the comfort that our sleep republic bed gives us - the price isn't nearly as crazy as sleeping duck as well (although we haven't tried this option), which makes it better value. We've had it for over a year now, and it hasn't missed a beat. Extremely comfortable and doesn't yet show any sign of sag.

Liking the energy behind the casual drop of "plandemic" in there.

Vibes of "Yeah, of course Big Mattress knew what was happening in Wuhan… which was right before they dropped their pickup service. Coincidence???"

        • +32

Maybe you can dress the old mattress as a small child and it will be abducted from your home by Hillary Clinton via an underground series of tunnels connected to various pizza parlours.

@CrowReally: That sounds Q-tastic! But aint one of those conspiracy nuts.

              @EightImmortals:

But aint one of those conspiracy nuts

Your use of the term "plandemic" would suggest otherwise

                • @EightImmortals: That's exactly what a Q but would say.

                • +4

@EightImmortals: Don't worry. These people would've called you a conspiracist back in the day for calling out that Iraq didn't have WMDs.

                  • +2

@BankstownMoeyDW: Lack of genuine evidence for the invasion of Iraq was fairly mainstream sentiment in Australia at the time and would now be almost universal.

                    • +1

@us3rnam3tak3n: I recall Australians generally being supportive of the invasion at the time. The internet wasn't a huge thing back then and most of us got our news from "reliable" and "pre-fact" checked sources.

                • +1

@EightImmortals: I guess if you're not suggesting the actual release of the virus was planned but simply that certain interested parties took advantage of the situation, then that's not even controversial.

        • +1

That happened to me after we got our Koala mattress. The collection service that they had was booked up for ages during lockdowns. I ended up just finding another company and paid them to recycle it.

          • +2

@seanfoite: Just checked with SD and they resumed mattress disposal in metro areas so the city-slickers should be good to go.

    • -1

Just give it away on Gumtree. Some scumbag will come and pick it up.

      • Meh bulk hassle. I can wait until normal services hopefully resume.

        • Put it on the footpath with a $20 sign on it. It will be gone by the morning.

      • +4

Yeah but then i would have to interact in person with someone who would get a free mattress off Gumtree. No thanks.

        • Very good point! shudder

Been happy with our Sleeping Duck but it's not the Mach 2.

No reason to be unhappy. Admittedly the Mach 2 mattress is faster at twice the speed of sound, or more than 2076 kph, but I’m sure most people, like you, are quite content sleeping on their current subsonic mattresses. Yes, there will be those who will want to experience the thrill of sleeping for eight hours at twice the speed of sound, and that’s the market the SD Mach 2 mattress is catering for. But as the saying goes, live and let live, sleep and let sleep.

  • +5

A lot of people don't take into account the bed base. Get a crappy slat bed base and the mattress suffers.

In saying that the Koala Paddington bed base has been great.

    • Good point, I was reading that Sleeping Duck only guarantee the mattress as long as you use an approved bed frame.

    • +11

Wow $1200 for a king base that literally had no storage.

      • +1

        Link a better one?

      • If it has storage now, what's the problem?

    • +1

      i'd just use the floor

      • +2

        Big mistake with a mattress

        • Why?

          • +1

@GandalfTheCheap: The mattress needs ventilation to expel the moisture from your body. Similar to drying a towel on a rack vs the floor.

            • @us3rnam3tak3n: That's a weird theory.

Even if that much sweat somehow got into a mattress (in those cases where you don't have a waterproof mattress protector on top of it, I guess), why would you imagine the moisture would need to soak all the way through to the bottom somehow, instead of the top or sides?

I mean it's obviously nonsense anyway since lots of bed bases are solid like a floor, but I wonder where this idea came from… Cheap bedmakers trying to convince people slats are actually better?

              • +3

@GandalfTheCheap: It's not that the moisture needs to find its way to the bottom. It's simply that airflow is improved from slats vs solid base/floor and airflow aids drying. Obviously an impervious protector will prevent most moisture from entering in the first place. Mattresses generally have vents on the sides which help as well.

I've had a futon become mouldy on the underside from being used on the floor - no other significant factor. Bed sellers will exaggerate how much you sweat at night but it's enough to generate mould if not mitigated.

Perhaps add bed of nails too?

  • A good Yoga mat?

Loving my Koala mattress. If you're in Sydney I would recommend heading down to Koala Second Home in Campbelltown to look for some good deals. They're all the returns people have made and then refurbished by Koala. Obviously if it's a mattress you might think twice for used. But we found a box damaged one that had not been opened yet. Mattress was still rolled up and had not inflated. I was able to buy it at a big discount compared to retail.

Do you just make it a point to go out of your way to make comments that don't contribute anything to the conversation jv?

  • +2

A lot of those online mattress stores offer free trials - they donate the mattresses after so apparently there's an excess that charities/refuges don't know what to do with them and some have stopped accepting them, fyi

I had a Koala for 6 years, bought another 2 years ago for the spare room but wouldn't do them again. Cheap memory foam =/= good memory foam and you are looking at $5k+ for Tempur for the good stuff. They do get awfully hot even in winter and ours became too soft too quickly; though the newer Koala must be different recipe as it's been far too firm

You're best bet is to try a bunch of bed stores when they run their monthly 50% off sales - I found one of the King Koils very comfortable but the discounted price was $3k, so tried the Sleep Republic "hybrid" mattress (essential a spring mattress with memory foam pillow top, nothing new) and found it good enough to keep for the $1.3k

Also sag warranties aren't worth much since they need a lot of deterioration to trigger the warranty.
Eg 3.75cm sag on KK, 3.2cm on Sealy and 2.5cm on Koala. After 6 years my Koala felt very saggy but I could only measure ~1.6cm of sag in the middle so they wouldn't do anything under warranty

    • +3

so i had a 9+ year old ergoflex, it was begining to sag in the middle, i took photos and they replaced it free… i was surprised/impressed by their service

one thing that annoyed me was the heat - so we tried an emma a few years later (changed bed size),

i didn't mind the emma, but wife found it too firm, we went back to ergoflex.

      • Emma is a firm mattress. can confirm

      • +1

I love my Emma mattress. They often have sales and you can pick one up for around $600. I wrote a glowing review because I love it that much and they gave me $25 back. The mattress feels firm when you first lie on it, but it’s designed to spread the pressure evenly along your body so you turn less. The same concept mattress are used for old people so they don’t get pressure sores. The only negative is that you don’t get a good “bounce back” during sex….

        • +2

People don’t mention the last point you made nearly enough.

      • I have a 5 year old Ergoflex which has been giving me mild back pain in stiffness for the past year or so. It's pretty mild and goes away once I start moving around but I might have to email them about a replacement.

I don't think there is any visible sag in mine though but has been getting worse over the past few months.

I have a small mattress factory, and I often recommend people to go to other smaller factories based on where they live. If you let me know where you live, I may be able to guide you in the right direction. A good small mattress factory will produce a far superior mattress to anything online. One of the reasons for this is that at a small factory they will be more experienced at getting something closer to your unique preferences. This is something you really want to get right and then forget about for ten years. Just my 2 cents. Reach out if you have any questions, karl from ausbeds

    • Thanks

    • Do you have any recommendation for medium/firm mattress under $500?

    • Any details for SA?

      • +1

Yes, Try supercraft bedding and galligans. These are places that make their own. It's a different ballgame to the above brands. The brands above are made in china and are in a race to the bottom. We get people in the showroom every day complaining of them. Usually, it's 6 months - 3years, and they have had enough. In saying all of that, sleep republic seem to have the best product out of the above. I believe they have a factory.

        • any particular type of mattress you recommend from Supercraft or Galligans?

          • +2

@dc87: Best off going in and talking to them. Places like this can guide you to something you like. They'll be straightforward and transparent.. Different experience to mattress in a box and retail. Go and have a chat to them. Whatever problem you have had in the past, tell them, and they'll be able to find a solution.

    • Wouldn’t mind supporting a local business. Is there any business you can recommend in NE Melbourne?

    • +1

Would also like to know WA if you have a suggestion

      • +2

Quokka beds for a well-priced all latex mattress..

        • Is all latex a good thing?

          • +4

@Mixhael: It has pros and cons. Very basically, The pros are it'll last a long time. The cons are it's like trying to move a dead body around as there is no rigidity to it and it's really heavy. My favourite mix is pocket spring/micro spring/latex combo. This has latex as the comfort layer but has the rigidity of the spring unit. It also has a better cushioning feel. All latex can feel a little dense. However, with something like quokka you're able to change the layers around but so there are options.

The problem is, in perth quokka may be one of the best options.

If I were in perth, this would be one that I would consider a very safe bet. Latex is tapped from a tree the same way maple syrup is. It's natural rubber, throughout my time making mattresses, I have still yet to see a single failed piece of latex. No off-gassing, very slow deterioration. I always recommend it without hesitation.

There is only two other foams available, polyfoam and memory foam, and those two are pure plastic. Many of the beds in a box use low-quality plastic foam and very firm springs, a bad combo. I think the sleep republic should be the one anyone picks above the others if buying online, I love that they have lots of coils. I do that and it's been the best thing for comfort. It's like having better dpi for your monitor. There is better molding to the body.

            • @Karl from ausbeds: Thanks for the detailed writeup! I appreciate it (and hopefully so do some other people).
Micro spring combined with latex seems the way to go? My sister has an ecosa and likes it, and I'm considering going for the pure. It looks very similar to the Sleep Republic one, but better. But for a similar price I might just give the local Quokka mattress a try instead.

              Thanks again!

              • +3

@Mixhael: In my opinion, the quokka is going to be the better buy. Ecosa has far too many negative reviews about dipping. You don't want to be stuck with a dipped mattress after only a couple of years. They import from china and I believe they are just using low-quality stuff that won't last. Judging by there previous reviews that is.

Dipping is the biggest problem in the industry and it's caused by the race to the bottom. Lower-density foams cost far less and directly affect the company's bottom line. There is a lot of motivation to use this low-quality foam. I would recommend you try either sleep republic or quokka.

                • @Karl from ausbeds: Thanks again for the quick and honest feedback. If I could buy my matress from you I would! That said, I think I'll go for a Quokka.

                  • +1

@Mixhael: Go and have a lay down and a chat to them. They'll probably be able to help you get it right. Smaller places like this probably won't have sales tactics etc' and you'll probably be talking to the owner. Not sure about that, just a hunch

                • @Karl from ausbeds: Thanks mate, great advice! I need a singles with a bed base for my young child. Looks like Sleep Republic is the way to go in Perth. Quokka looks great, but too expensive and the bundled bed frame is overkill and not very safe (daughter has a tendency to hit hard corners!)

My older son has got a Zzz Atelier. Very soft and no edge support. He loves it as he is still little and the softness is just right and miles ahead of the rubbish IKEA mattress he was in. Not great for me as I can't sit and read to him as I'll slide off. Sitting in the middle gives me a sore back. It's also no longer available so it's a moot choice.

Thing is, the Mrs thinks spending on a good beds for kids is a waste…

          • +1

@Mixhael: Depends on a lot of factors. I prefer latex pocketspring, however even with latex pocketspring there are many things that can go wrong with the design. You can have the highest quality materials in the world but if the bodyweight and sleep style is not taken into account then buying quality materials will not make up for it.

I usually think it's better to find a good mattress guide rather than looking for a good mattress. A good mattress guide may have 10-20 years of experience and will have multiple ways of finding what you are looking for. That's why I small factories, they are also extremely experienced mattress builders and make the best guides.

Any recommendation for Canberra, for medium/firm mattress please?

      • +2

I haven't found anyone yet in Canberra that I can recommend sorry! I'm working on it though

        • +2

Although If I were going to bet on one of the mattress in a box, I'd take a punt on the Sleep republic, looks alright.

          • +1

@Karl from ausbeds: Thanks for the advice - but do look forward to when you do find someone in Canberra please.

          • @Karl from ausbeds: Hi Karl,
Thanks for all the great advice. With a budget of around$1K and based in Sydney, if I were to look for a pocketspring + latex (stomach sleeper <70Kg), would you then recommend Sleep Republic? Have looked at your company, Rockdale Mattress factory and The Natural Bedding company as you advised but it's all above my budget at this stage.

          • @Karl from ausbeds: Hi Karl! After a lot of research i'm thinking of purchasing a Queen bed and base from you. Few questions:

            1) Real differences/advantages between the 3 models?
            2) Is the bed base in stock? Noting that it says delivery available anytime after Dec 17th
            3) Any current coupon codes for Ozbers? :)
