Best Mattress 2022

Hi all,

I'm on the market for a new King Mattress and am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options!

I've come to realise that there isn't a one option that will work for everyone, but was hoping to be set in the right direction.

In terms of budget I'm pretty flexible, I'm more focused on getting a good product. I don't have any back issues (yet).

Would be great if you can share some of your experiences and rate your favourite mattress brand.

Thanks

      • Go check out Makin Mattresses in Fyshwick. We've had one of their mattresses since we first moved to ACT in 2006 and it's still going strong.

        • Thanks heaps dominator!

        • Making mattresses for sure BELLISSIMO range

    • Any recommendations for Perth?

      This^

Most of the internet advertised ones are just hype and paid via affiliate commission.

They also have really annoying ads.

      • Choice, bedbuyer, all of those sites, all paid. Not great for real information

        • Choice being paid? Their main claim is that they are independent due to being member funded. Don't get me wrong, I don't have the most faith in Choice's product reviews but I think that's just from general competence.

    • Any recommendations for Brisbane?

    • Hi there, any in brisbane?

    • indeed! how often people change their mattresses usually, around 10 years for a good one?

      • +2

Yeah, 10 years or more for a good one. Although it also depends on bodyweight, heavier people will wear a mattress faster, light people will wear a mattress slower.

Here is a guy opening a 50 year old mattress, it shows the durability of latex as a mattress foam. This has been my experience also with latex. Real latex is gonna last alot longer than anything else, by far.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjfQqDGJ1gI

      • +2

99% of the time, plastic based foam wears out before anything else. Eliminate plastic foam from the mattress and you'll have an extremely durable mattress.

    • Do you know any near Bendigo region? I prefer a less chemical mattress … price doesnt matter

    • Have you heard of mattress island in Heidelberg?

      https://www.mattressisland.com.au/product-page/latex-series-…

I got this one with a boxed construction - seemed excellent and all made in house.

I am wondering what upper material you’d recommend for the top - I can choose any for free…
      https://www.mattressisland.com.au/fabric-options

      • I checked out mattress island, watched some of there vids. I don't agree with everything they are saying, however I believe they are really concerned with delivering great value. Seems like a decent place to buy a mattress. Better value than alot. Although they don't look like they've been in it for a very long time. Just my feeling is all.

As for top fabric, that's a tuff one, I've tried alot of things, and I've landed on something that is super stretchy. Flexibility in the top layer to me is, the number one thing to look for. If it doesn't stretch, the conforming abilities of everything beneath it is disabled. My advice? Pull them all apart, get the stretchiest one.

        • Understood. What specifically do you disagree with just out of interest?

I was originally considering outlast but he told me that it could make the mattress feel firmer. Suggestion was organic cotton or the bamboo, with the cotton being more durable but I think I will change to bamboo because I’m going to put a mattress protector over it anyway. I want it to be good with heat as well.

They seem to use an absolutely massive 12.5cm layer of latex in this series 8 which is what drew me to it. A lot of other brands I saw just use small amounts. They do also sell as little as 2.5cm for cheaper

          • @evasive: With the fabric, I'd would just go with the most stretchy fabric. I'm not a big believer that the fabric makes that much of a difference to the heat. I prefer to think that you take care of heat by using less foam.

A mattress is a complicated equation, more of something doesn't always mean better, however less plastic foam in my opinion is the way to go.

12.5cm of latex on pocketsprings will be very durable, but the comfort is going to be impossible for me to predict. That's something for you to feel.

In my best mattress I use 5cm of latex, more latex doesn't mean better. The feel and durability is what matters and there are different ways of getting there.

I don't agree with their foam box construction. I prefer steel to the edge for durability and breathability. The top layers of the mattress need to dry during the day, foam box inhibits that. Again, no science to back that up, just a hunch.

            • @Karl from ausbeds: I had the choice of foam box or using springs to the edge but ultimately the foam had better edge support in my testing by quite a margin?

There was also thinner options 2.5,5cm,and 7.5cm for the latex but those had various layers of foam underneath and to be honest the 12.5cm was so comfy in the warehouse so I hope I won’t regret.

              • @evasive: @evasive, did you end up buying this mattress? I came across this mattress in my search; after 6+ months, would you recommend it?

                • +1

@Zippy135: Yeah I did the series 8 and no issues with it at all so far, very comfortable

    • Any recommendations for Perth? After the best quality luxury matress, happy to pay premium for quality product.

    • If price isn't a factor, what is the best firm mattress you would recommend in Sydney?

      • Well, you could try mine, I have really good firm mattresses, I'm in Marrickville. I make them so that you can adjust the firmness. For example, There would be about 4 settings just in the firm range which you can change at home.

Other than that, I would usually recommend mattress factories to buy from only, and there aren't really any other than mine in Sydney. There is Rockdale mattress factory also, you could try there. For all latex there is the natural bedding company in Stanmore.

    • @karlvann Have you heard of Ultimate Beds in Perth?

      https://ultimatebeds.com.au/mattresses/

    • Karl how about Brisbane?

      • I always refer Brisbane people to https://www.themattresscompany.com.au/OurStores/SunshineCoas…

Their stuff will be better and cheaper than most retailers and bed in a box. They have one called the latex composite, I rang the owner and asked him some questions. I'll vouch for him.

        • Thanks. Sorry I should have looked at the thread more - I can see you answered this question already many times. I will also look at Tempur - had one for 15 yrs but there are a lot more choices. I saw your great info on whirlpool as well thanks., DJs have the biggest discount at the moment so will start there.

    • Hey @karlvann I'm up in Darwin, NT. Do you have any recommendations up here? I'm getting terrible back pain all of a sudden from my mattress

      • +1

Hiya, I don't know of any up that way, sorry!

        • There use to be one up here years ago. No idea on the name. Might not be around anymore. Business opportunity for you lol

  • I bought a koala in 2015/16 and it developed a sag after a few years. Didn't do anything about it until my kid slept there and I thought to just email them about it. I sent a couple of photos and she said it was bordering on wear and tear, but they'll send me a new mattress.

New one has a separate 2 sided topper so I feel like I'd get double use out of it. Great customer service. Can't talk for the other brands as I've only had it get 1 mattress over the years lol

  • +2

what I don't get is why people are happy to spend $3K or more on spring mattress while natural latex equivalent cost around $2000

    • Latex is not for everyone. I found it spring mattress are cooler to sleep on.

Got the Zzz Atelier Mattress Black Label when it was peaking on here back in 2018 and it's been a joy to sleep on.
In saying that, don't have any back problems, nor do I have an educated opinion on mattress.
Happy to hear if anyone has an opinion on these :)

    • +1

Got one for my 9yo 2 years ago. It's okay for kids but too soft for me (I'm 75kg).
The claimed edge support is also rubbish compared to the old Oz Mattress I have.
That said, it's a budget choice, so not a fair comparison.
Pity Oz Mattress is no more :(

Also, just looked on fleabay as I want to get another for my younger kid, but Zzz Atelier seems to be out of stock for most sizes so they may be disappearing soon

      • I'm here searching for a company like ozmatress, but ausbeds above looks like it is fitting the bill.

      • weird i'm a bit heavier than you, i got mine in 2017 and it is still ok - i liked that you could get really high mattresses

  • I recently bought an Ecosa King Single sized mattress for one of my kids and they love it. They have a 100 night trrial - thankfully no dramas.

  • Real ones sleep on kmart air mattress with no pillow

  • How long should a mattress usually last , I had got one from sealy and it has become very uncomfortable after 15 months

    • Definitely more than that. Think in the realm of 5-15 years

  • If you're in Sydney, check out Ausbeds - https://www.ausbeds.com.au/buy-mattress-online/

    Great service and mattresses

    • +6

That's my business! Thanks, I've been responding to other people in this thread also. Glad you like my biz!

      • +1

Appreciating your responses and enthusiasm in this thread.

I have an Ozmatress grandmaster - wondering what you thought of the model and company (which sadly went out of business). I ask because of your insightful ness throughout the thread.

Have looked at your website and would definitely buy a bed from you when it comes time to replace mine.

        • +3

When I look at Ozmattress I see a company that would have outsourced some mattress designs to a larger factory and sold them on the website. The pocketspring unit would be an 870 array (That's 870 pocketsprings for a king size). The most common arrangement as it's ok, and very cheap. I find a denser array of pockets is much more comfortable.

Above that, it's plastic foam in different combinations. I believe they used decent plastic foams, not terrible, as I have people buy from me that have had one. They usually say 5-7 years. Which is much better than what they tell me for the current generation of internet mattresses. However, there is a good chance the ozmattress would last much longer, it just depends on the bodyweight of the person sleeping on it. Lighter person, mattress lasts longer.

The problem with the plastic foam is, it's going to deteriorate. You have a pocket spring unit that is absolutely perfect, (these things last forever) you've got quilting fabrics that could keep going for years, but then you've got these layers of plastic foam that render the whole thing useless. Environmentally and financially not great.

  • I still have the 150 kmart special that is boxed up

  • So many mattress out there, best for me doesn't equates to best for you. Visit few shops and get some idea, unless you risk it and get them online based on popularity.

If you game enough, take your partner with you as well. RiP

  • Got an Ikea pocket spring one for $499 recently. We liked that they have a 365 change of mind policy on not just the mattress but the topper (plus a 10 year warranty).

    • do you mind sharing what model is it? I'm after ikea too

      • It's the VALEVÅG, and we got the KNAPSTAD Mattress Pad too, but it's gone up by $50 since then

        • thanks, exactly what I had shortlisted.

  • -2

    https://bedbuyer.com.au/best-mattresses/
I used the above website to look at some of their mattress reviews and I ended up buying a Cloud 9 mattress (now called Yinahla I believe) during Chiropedic's Spend and Save sale in April 2021. If they have the spend and save sale again where you can get 60% off, I think it's a pretty good deal… I got a king mattress, base, mattress protector and sheets for just under $2300 delivered! The mattress is meant to have a 20-year warranty too.

    • +2

lol. you realise those websites are paid by the highest bidder right? the more commission those brands give the more likely these sites are likely to recommend them.

how on earth do you remember the name of a sale a year ago, sock puppeting?

      • I remember it because it was a big purchase that I spent a lot of time researching… (I also looked at a lot of Ozbargain posts along with just googling in general. The above site just led to an extra $150 off)
Also, most of the mattresses listed in this post spend lots of money advertising or give discounts for good reviews which is why they have soo many usually. Your comment is pretty much how most things work on the internet these days…

        • well good on you least you bought from a real store at least. after koalas facebook ads campaigns it sort of triggered me majorly whenever i see a mattress ad.

  • +1

love my Art & Science Gold + extra firm pillow top from Sleeping Giant. Been using it for over 5 years and recommend to lot of friends. Think I paid around $690 for queen size.

  • On another note, has anyone done those sleep test things at like sleep easy and really managed to figure out which mattress was best for you?

I want to eventually buy a new mattress as well that will be good for my back etc.

    • That's an awful way to determine if a mattress works for you, almost everyone gets something too soft because it's immediately comfortable

  • Sleeping Duck and their SD ultimate of what ever it is called frame.

I just need some advice on pillows now - I'm a low/flatter pillow type person

  • +3

    Tempur.

You get what you pay for. Have compared against koala and ecosa - the difference is night and day. We got our tempur when they were on 50% off sale.

    • I have seen these. While they are good, they cost an arm and a leg

      • +2

The thing is, you spend between 1/4 to 1/3 of your life on a mattress.

The things that separate you and the ground you should not cheap out on.

        Mattress, shoes, tyres.

  • +3

Is there any reason why majority here love mattress in a box?

And some said after x years it sag.

Why not buy traditional mattress that last well over 10-15 years, only reason u changed it is probably because it's stained or have body smells after been used for so long.
Mine still going after 15 years.

    They never sags.

  • Just last weekend I tested a bunch of mattresses in 5 stores. Really liked the Slumberking which is Aussie made, so less likelihood of toxic foams.

I planned to buy a mattress online but after trying them out it became obvious that personal preference is not reflected at all in descriptions of firmness, zones, edge support, partner disturbance etc.

We're a big fan of this mattress- Madison Times Square- we've had it for around 6 or so years now

    https://www.snooze.com.au/products/madison-times-square-matt…

So much so that we've bought one for our baby's room where we have another bed for my wife while she's sleeping in there atm.
Also, we didn't pay RRP. You never do.

    Also, Australian made.

  • Look and ask on whirlpool. There is a good topic on mattresses there. Basically anything you've listed is budget quality foam which will sag over the years. Tbh, the only full foam mattress that I've researched which will probably last are the Tempurs. You are looking at 5k plus for these.

  • Ikea! We have an Ikea mattress and it’s been great. Comes with a fantastic warranty too - you can return it no questions asked within 365 days.

  • +1

    Tempur.
Expensive? Yes. But if you go for the lower end models, the main difference is thickness / how much foam you get. The 'One' was perfect for me.

They are very confusing with each retailer having a different 'range' in name and style, so you can't easily price match and compare.
I would say that the Harvey Norman versions, come with special cooling integrated into the mattress, to off set any heat that foam mattresses sometimes create.

Also wait for sales, and haggle price down, try get things included like mattress protectors / Tempur pillows etc.

    • Wouldnt buy Tempur without 50% off, but these are relatively easy to come by at that markdown. Still hella expensive compared to the other brands, but in my experience, once you've tried it, its very difficult to sleep anywhere else.

  • +1

Got a koala mattress a couple years ago. After having used it for this long I can confidently say it is garbage. Got a body divot already, its laytex layer is barely there & I am getting pilling from the cover.

  • -1

    King Koil from Harvey Norman

  • Sleeping duck we have had for 2 years and love it. Make sure you click on referral link if you end up getting one (random generator one). My advice is avoid the frame though. We got a quokka frame and a sleeping duck and love it.

  • Get an Australian made conventionally shipped mattress, such as King Koil. I recently tried a mattress in a box for one of my kids and while it may be ok for a child, the edge support etc is completely inadequate in the immediate term, let alone long term for an adult.

  • Prince mattress, Auburn (website has inflated prices, go directly there for a better quote)

  • -1

    Best mattress, hay.

  • +1

    Tempur.

  • +1

If there is one piece of advice I can give someone, it's to spare to expense on getting an amazing mattress and set of pillows. Find the ones that suit you perfect and forget the cost.

You will be sleeping on this basically every night of your life, and the difference a consistently good night's sleep has on your overall life cannot be understated.

Don't have back pain (yet)? Good. Keep it that way with a high-quality mattress.

  • +2

I've used the Koala mattress in the past and it does soften/sink and the edges get too soft over time as well.

Been using an Ecosa Queen mattress on the standard (medium) setting for 4 years? Now with my partner and we are quite happy with it. It's definitely on the firmer side but by comparison the Koala was a cloud (too much so, no support/uneven support). No noted sagging or sinking so far!

Used the Koala back in ~2016 though and I understand they've updated their lineup.

As Jules above mentioned, don't concern yourself with costs for mattresses, take your time, do your research, try before you buy where possible as well. 1/3rd of your life on a mattress. Get a good one lol.

I make the same claim with shoes! They support your entire body, get ones that work for you/support your feet and knees/joints.

  • Had a Koala, found it wore and dipped after around the 3-4 year mark, although I'm a biggen of a bloke.

Went to a Sleep Republic approx a year ago and have found it to be a supreme mattress, far heavier, but a nice build overall!

YMMV due to beds and peoples preferences aye

  • tried all the online ones in the vote section last year- all sagged and gave me back pain within the 2-3 month trial period- dont buy, all crap.

Bought a more expensive tempur- its okay. I still get back pain but its less common (maybe once every 2-3 weeks). Currently have had it for 9 months or so.

  • I went with a Queen Sherman Just Perfect
MEDIUM FEEL back in 2020. Been great for over two years. No signs of sagging and very comfy.

Had an Ecosa for a year before that but was crap for heat and no bounce for sexy time 😉

  • +1

    Pocket springs = cheap

Don't buy a mattress with pocket springs.

    Always read Latex is good.

I've still got a Oz Mattress Grandmaster, they don't sell them anymore tho. My mattress weighs alot! It definitely ain't out of a box. It helped my lower back alot, and don't get anymore back issues out of bed. I've had this mattress for a long time, still going strong.

I'm not sure what I'd do now, but years ago when I did research I worked out pocket springs are cheap and they slowly wear down.

Tempur are okay, but only if you're a back sleeper. It takes a bit to mould to you.

Anything out of a box won't be high quality, they're also cheap to manufacture.

You can do some digging, half those mattresses cost around $60-$180 to manufacture.

  • Recently bought the sleeping duck mach II and very happy with it, the adjustable firmess option and ability for half/half is great, edge support is also very good.
I was tempted to go for the sleep republic but at the time of purchase there were some delays expected in the delivery

  • +1

I absolutely love my Sleeping Duck mattress and have had family members purchase another 2 and we have all been extremely happy with them.
There is nothing to lose with a 100 night sleep guarantee and a 10 year warranty.

I had done a heap of research before purchasing my sleeping duck and found that a lot of the mainstream brands in Myer, DJs etc use similar components on the inside and change the topper to differentiate their products to create an expanded (and overpriced) product line.

  • +1

About 6 months ago I rented my Airbnb to a guest who asked if it was OK to move the furniture around and shoot a review video. It turns out they ended up testing a lot of the popular online mattress in a box brands. While not scientific, their video was pretty cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awv6gbac7bM

  • I bought a king ecosa mattress a few years back and its been amazing. Not sure if you've had a look at them yet.

  • IKEA mattress are very good value especially when on sale. Which happens usually around the end of the year.

  • So what's the current Zzz Atelier Mattress Black Label alternative? (<$500 queen)
Need a good value mattress for the parents

  • Should have mentioned if your in Sydney and want hand made bed to suit your individual requirements very hard to soft, and made in the factory in Marrickville with excellent customer service at reasonable price (for Aussie made) can’t go past

    ausbeds.com.au

Bought a double and later queen mattresses from them in the past.

    10 out 10

What did you end up buying OP?

    Have you considered Ausbeds?

  • Hi all.

Any recommendations for a king or super king for two guys living in the larger side of life ( around 110kg to 120kg each)

Hopefully looking for bed and base under 2.5k. achievable?

Was looking at the sleeping duck indestruct bed base but gees 1.8k just for the base.
Do they ever go on sale?
