Metabo Cordless 2 Piece 18v Battery Combo Kit (Drill/Driver) $169 in-Store @ Bunnings

Original non-cached Bunnings link that has been taken down, but for reference - https://www.bunnings.com.au/metabo-cordless-2-piece-18v-batt…

Location of stock - https://nrby.in/bunnings/0338483

Following brakenick's recent Metabo deal I went and checked out the local Bunnings to see their price. No joy ($229), but they did have these sitting next to the rotary hammer drills. Limited stock in limited stores (enough to post a deal) so I'll post in the same format.

Kit contains;
1 x SSD 18 LTX BL 200 - Brushless Impact Driver
1 x SB 18 LT BL - Brushless Hammer Drill
1 x 5.5 Ah LiHD Batteries
1 x ASC 55 - Fast Charger

Basically if you're happy to only have 1 battery for 2 tools it's a great deal. But even if you go and buy a second battery ($100-ish for a 4 amp) you're still doing well considering Bunnings is selling a kit with the same tools including 2 batteries (plus box) for $399

Neglected to get a picture of the clearance label.

They like to make it confusing:

As you may have heard, Hitachi Koki, the parent company of Hitachi Power Tools, recently announced that it’s changing it’s name to Koki Holdings. Metabo HPT will be one of the brands Koki Holdings owns joining Metabo, Hikoki, and other companies like Tanaka.

Metabo HPT will be completely separate from Metabo, and so they will not share battery platforms or tools. They serve two different market segments. Metabo serves the metal working/industrial market segment while Metabo HPT serves the residential/multifamily construction market.

You might have noticed recently that Metabo has been trying to push into other US markets that would overlap with Hitachi, but Hitachi did not elaborate on how this new scheme would affect those efforts.

The reason for the name change is that they are no longer part of the large corporation known as Hitachi, which sells everything from consumer products to automotive equipment. Hitachi acquired Metabo a few years ago, and last year both brands were sold by Hitachi to KKR, a private equity firm.

Metabo HPT also said they want to expand their role in the residential and multifamily construction and enter into the electrical and plumbing tool markets.

  • I've not heard of this brand before, how does it compare, overall but especially quality wise, to the more well known brands?

    • They have a high quality reputation over a long time, but I don’t have any first hand experience.
Better than Ryobi or Black and Decker consumer grade, similar to Makita, maybe not quite up there with AEG.
I’m not a fan of dewalt or milawaukee, but Metabo is in the same ball park.

      • i have 2 metabo corded drills and a corded angle grinder …..great tools and better than my makita gear ….haven’t owned their cordless since they had nicad a long time ago …..the drills and grinder are made in germany …..not sure where the austar
ian stock cordless stuff is made.

        • Most of their drills still seem to be made in Germany.
I've got a few Metabo cordless tools. The drills and multi-tool are German, the rest are Chinese made.

    • The batteries have a 3 year warranty and they'll give you a 6 year warranty on the tools with registration.

      Milwaukee gives you 2 & 5, Makita is 3 & 5 and AEG is also 3 & 6

Honestly I'd never looked twice at the brand before today but if the warranty and the reviews I've seen are anything to go by Metabo stuff should go alright.

A lot of confusion about this brand but to summarise:

Was Hitachi Koki—> Hitachi sold the Division to KKR—>Name change to HiKoki in Europe and Asia—> Name change to Metabo HPT in North America.

So don't confuse Metabo products and Metabo HPT products, different product, different battery.

    Check which one you're getting.

    • Scientific way of telling them apart:
      The darker green are Metabo.
Metabo HPT (Hikoki/Htachi) are lighter green.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of cross over yet between the main product lines, but things like the radios are the same.

  • People on OzB are posting comments with their opinions and reviews of Metabo, but it seems like we can't be sure if they mean this Metabo or the other one.

Also this is not the Metabo that's within CAS - that battery alliance, right?

    • I stand corrected - you can see CAS on the battery.

Still not sure about the comments, if they're relevant or not.

      • This problem with CAS is almost everything else not Metabo is some specialist or professional tool.

  • Just picked one up from Newstead and there is still a fair few left

  • Just picked one up from Epping and there is one more left.

  • I grabbed one form Epping Bunnings yesterday around midday and there was 4 left at that time

  • Grabbed the last one at Burleigh,
Just so you all know what you're buying:- hammer drill is made Germany
    Impact is made in China
    Charger Vietnam
and Battery is Assembled in Hungary , whatever that means .

Seems like a pretty chinsy looking set , but haven't tested.
I probably wouldn't have made the effort to hunt around had I known.

Still plenty of the Rotary Hammers about from the last deal at $129 .
Made in Deutschland and a much more solid tool.

Metabo used to be up there between Hilti and Makita type quality in my mind ,
but seems like going the way of AEG to another cheapish kinda brand,
now they've been sold again ,
by Hitachi to an investment group .
