Anyone else thought that was a 700cc bike initially?

    • Yes Hybrid electric 700cc were my thoughts.

  • only 9 speed

    • +8

It is the trend these days to do away with front derailleur.
1x9-speed is not so different to 3x7.

      • +2

1x9 is great. Cassette with disc breaks at a bargain price. Would make a good budget commuter for anyone interested in starting to ride to work

        • Yes, cassette is very nice at this price!

The problem with this bike's gears is that the top gear looks too low, so you can't ride very fast. Needs a bigger chainring?
Some proper specs would be nice!!

          • +2

@bargaino: I've got a 10 speed MTB with only 1 sprocket at the front.

It's cromulent for 90% of the terrain. For a commuter city bike this would be sufficient.

            • @ChickenDinner123: Your 1x10 probably has a bigger chainring, and larger range on the cassette.

A road bike does not need as big a gear range, but this bike appears to be geared to low/slow for my taste.

          • +1

@bargaino: It actually says freewheel in the image so maybe it’s not so good

            • @choofa: Nah, definitely a cassette. Hopefully Shimano/SRAM compatible.

Cable actuated disc brakes are trash

This thing will likely rust when it gets wet.

It's more than double the price, but buy a giant and do yourself a favour. These bikes will end up in landfill quicker than you can say, price jacking

Wouldn’t this be better for commuting? A little old school, rim brakes, simple, $10 more,

  • Is this one better or worse?
I know nothing about bikes but wanted to buy one for a few weeks now.

You should choose a bike on what you want, not the price
What do you want the bike to do?

    • I'm no biking expert, but I ride around my neighborhood a lot. Getting groceries, going to train stations, etc. Because I go up and down kerbs, I highly appreciate my front suspension.

So, like choofa said, what kind of riding will you be doing?

I bought this one in Kogan when it was only $89. Very happy with it ;) Riding every day for exercise.

  • 29" wheels?

    • +2

29" rims are the same as 700C, though typically wider. Both are 622mm rim diameter.

  • Wow - a bike for $189 from Kogan. I wouldn't risk riding it to the end of my drive.

    • I bought their folding mountain bike. For the price, it's alright. It's heavy and it has already begun rusting a little in places, but nothing that can't be fixed.

  • The frame looks very flimsy for a mountain bike. Would be better off as a commuter bike if anything

    • It's not intended to be used as a mountain bike!
It's a hybrid - combining elements of mountain bikes (eg, the light trail-capable elements and flat bars) and road bikes (lighter frame, narrower tyres) without actually being either.
You wouldn't enter a road race on one of these just as you wouldn't tackle a rocky mountain trail - but it improves on both styles of bike for everyday commuting or leisure.

  • I have one of these bike and it is pretty good.

  • I am more impressed about the 599 than the 189

  • How can you buy a bike off Kogan specs which are almost nonexistent? I'm looking at the Urban Hybrid specs and I can't even see how wide the tyres are. Nearly the only spec there is the rather unlikely 10.5kg net weight. Maybe there are more specs in the user guide … no.
