"Hot air technology" aka an oven :-)
Basically the same as your convection over, but faster airflow and pre-heat. The BS "frying" name put me off buying them for a long time, but they are useful.

    • +6

You skip a lot of context here.

Go use your wall oven and let it heat up for 12 minutes @ 3000w then cook, but if you have a new smart meter and peak demand tariff then enjoy paying another premium because you used it once a month between 6 and 7 pm.

Or you can run a 1500w 'air fryer' and at this price it would probably pay for itself in the first month.

      • +5

A 3000 watt oven doesn't use 3000 watts constantly, or use more power just because it has a higher maximum draw.

        • I think they are talking about demand pricing which basically hits you up for your maximum draw in addition to your power usage over time.

    • +3

My air fryer is done with my chicken tendies while my fan forced oven is still heating up.

      • yeah, thats what i said :(

  • +4

Has been cheaper. Paid $19 for ours. Works well. But a bit small. I'd go for 5 - 7 litre.

    • I got one from Woolworths for $0.

I have no idea what it is like to use though, as I gave it to a friend who had a broken oven at the time.

      • +1

its small. Very small. Good for studio apartments, etc, but limiting otherwise.

        • Yeah you don't want a 7L air fryer in a small apartment, constantly stepping over it, blocking emergency exits, far too big to just put on top the fridge when not using it, etc.

  • +4

A good first air fryer however the coating on the rack didn't last long

    • Good point. I looked at 3. Two had horrible coating on the racks. I would have returned them if I didn't check first.

    • +4

I've had mine close to a year and much to my surprise, the coating is doing pretty well. I even occasionally just throw it in the dishwasher.
Thought they were a gimmick but they've actually led me to eat healthier (I love roast veg and as a single person house it's a mile easier to just throw them in air fryer).

  • +1

Had this one since air fryers were even a thing. Paid Aro nd this. Maybe $5 less. So long now and despite what we throw at it we just can't kill it.

    • +1

Its just an old school 1950 stove coil element and a fan. Should last forever.

      • I had one from Aldi that only lasted 2 years.

        • +3

Probably a thermal fuse, which is a $1, 10 minute fix. The reason for 95% + of landfill…but you have to have them.

One of those things that should be common knowledge / taught at school etc.

    • The top half of mine is starting to come apart when I move it - I should probably get it again

      • get a good one, i used to have a kmart one that fell apart, and bought a phillips xl recently, much better, the cooking and size is such an upgrade

        • Would you mind sharing the difference with the Philips. I hear they are all effectively the same components etc. Any reason to spend more on the Phillips. Was going to get mum one.

          • @Pootie Tang: I mean the difference between the Philips and this one would be it's a good brand and made with better quality, I found the cheap kmart one just did not cook evenly or even that fast. The Philips one has blown me away, the size is a bonus, but cooks everything so much more evenly and fast. I got mine on sale for 199$ through ozbarg, and would keep your eye out!

            • @girafficlight: Thanks for this. Did buy a Phillips XXL and used for lamb last night and was excellent. The air flow that gets underneath is a big plus. Thank you for responding

              • @Pootie Tang: Ohh very nice! You won't regret it! Yes, I found the air flow was also great! No problems!

        • I already have a Philips XXL - both get used in different circumstances

  • +1

which one is a better ones from the budget range?

    • +2

I'll have had this for 2 years this dec…my son bought me one. Still going strong. Some people complain the coating on the racks come off, but mine is perfect. I hand wash mine though.

    • This is good! Had it for a few months now. Rack has one tiny mark from cleaning (I also hand clean). It fits about 5 or 6 chicken wings. Or double the amount of single chicken drummettes etc. Tastes better than cooking in the oven, near bbq grill texture and taste. Definitely recommend this for the price. Amazing value and is sturdy with no issues. I use it probably every second day. Sister also has one for close to a year with no probs she uses it multiple times per day.

  • +1

    Not digital mate.

    • Good pickup, edited now thanks. I copied another post's title for quick formatting and missed it.

  • +1

Gateway air fryer. Works fine but definitely a little small and a bit finicky with the basket needing to be pushed in at the exact angle with the right amount for force. I upgraded after 2 months.

    • what did you upgrade to and how is the new one holding up?

      • Instant Vortex Plus 5.7L. Gets daily use and hasn't skipped a beat. Super easy to clean as well.

        • some of the reviews complain of a plastic smell when using it, does yours have the same issue?

          • @[Deactivated]: Never had that issue myself but I washed everything in the unit before using. I know what you mean though as I've used a Kmart one that had that taste to it

        • Mine lasted two weeks

    • +1

yes, I have the same issue sometimes, but I hate it when I am having trouble doing it and my husband comes over and pushes it in straight away, then looks at me like I am an idiot….gggrrrr. I am trying not to break it by forcing it, but sometimes it just doesn't want to click in properly.

      • Ha ha it takes a certain finesse. He must just be getting a lot of practice.

  • +1

Got this and can recommend - gets used a few times a week if not almost every second day.
Agree with some of the comments saying it’s small, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing and might suit some better.

    • +1

yes, it is small , but fine for 2 people. If I got one again I would get the next size up, but this is fine atm. Had it nearly 2 years now, after our son bought it for us as a Christmas present, as he had one. I was one of the poo-pooers about these things, thinking they were just a gimmick, but they do come in handy, and we use ours all the time now.

  • +1

Can I keep it on a wooden table without burning the entire house?

  • How wide is the space inside? Can I reheat couple of pieces of pizza?

    • i have this and the diameter is ~20cm, so depends on your pizza size, it should able to handle at least 2 slice

      • Cool, Thanks!

  • +1

    10l was $50

  • +2

4yrs ago bought this - as we werent sure if we were gonna use it… ended up using it everyday/more or less… now half hoping it'll die so we can get a bigger one lol…
but its a good air fyer :)

    • What do you use it for mostly?

      • +1

        air frying things oddly enough…

frozen steggles chicken kievs/tenders are great …
        meat pies/sausage rolls…

        done roasts …

made pork belly/crackle from scratch in it too…
honestly best $40 i spent at the time…
        wish we had a 4.5/5ltr one… at times/when having friends/family over…

        generally if u're with a partner/self this 3.5 is fine…

        • Hey man, any tips for pork crackling in this? I have tried twice…burnt rubber twice.

*I did the whole score, salt, dry out over night in the fridge. Still burnt rubber

        • Cool, thanks mate.

  • +2

They are good. Had mine since 2 years. If you can get cheaper go for it

  • +1

Have this - it's pretty good considering the price. Mainly gets used in our household for nuggets, chips, spring rolls etc (small items). The manual timer isn't accurate - setting it to 5 minutes and it runs for about 8 minutes or so.

  • +1

Check the energy rating on these things,
Got rid of mine after my power bill doubled after three months of use.
Along with a few other things I did to reduce power usage like just doing standard cold washes of clothes and hooking up an old battery to a single solar panel with Jaycar cig attachment to charge phones , iPad , earphones ect ,
Managed to reduce bill back down to original level cost.
Don't know how much of this was the air fryer, which I understand is super convenient and probably much loved, but just thought I would share my experience for those struggling with power cost.

    • +2

I have to say, I haven't had that issue, and considering it is saving me using the large oven as much, I would think it would be a bit cheaper for me to run this instead.

      • +1

        You'd think ,
for those buying one for the first time, just watch your power usage on your bill .
        Happy to be wrong ,
I think mine was this brand but a bigger one.

    • +1

My power bill has gone down since i got my Kmart Airfryer as I am not using my rental's cheap, innefficient oven and preheating that for 20 mins prior anymore.

  • +1

Had mine for 18 months now. Still flawless. Used it as least every 2 days. Probably put every different type of food possible in it. No complaints. Highly recommend.

  • Have this, the rubber things that hold the rack are in bits and no longer hold the rack in place 😔

    • I was told to take the rubber pieces out before i used it. Obviously they will melt with that much heat. Just make sure rack is straight when putting it in.

  • Definitely buy this instead of paying 10x more for a Philips that does the same thing. I've used both and the food tastes the same. It's a small fast heating fan-forced oven, not magic.

If you expect to cook for than two people though, go the larger Kmart model with the non-digital controls.

  • Slightly deviating but has anyone used any silicone liners or mats with these ,I've the 10litre one

    • You can use liners, but be very careful they don't get sucked up into the fan and heating element.

I've made the mistake of using a thin silicone liner to reheat six nuggets which weren't heavy enough to hold it in place, so it was sucked into the fan. No damage just made an awful noise.

Baking paper or aluminium foil works too, just make sure it's roughly the same shape as the food, so the edges don't get sucked up into the heating element and start burning. Make sure you always remove the paper after every use, to avoid starting a fire upon next use.

      • Cheersmany thanks

      • +1

If you use liners the air can't circulate around the food cooking it evenly and that's the whole idea.

  • +1

We appreciate this as we've got a gas oven but also solar, so handy to use when the sun's out.

Ive done a small 1.2kg chook in it (nothing else at the same time), chopped potatoes quickly go down a treat, as do sweet potatoes, and fresh chicken pieces.

A small bread tin fits in for slices.

A medium round pyrex dish or cake tin also fits in and can do great box—mix brownies wih minimal mess or cleanup (mix in the one pyrex round dish, bake and store with the lid on if it doesnt all get eaten). Just heat on a slightly lower heat than recommended for even cooking.

  • I've got a 3.5l airfryer and while in most cases the size is fine (more than enough of chips for 2-3 kids), sometimes I wish I had a double basket one to cook chips and baked salmon simultaneously.

  • +1

Bought this for camping but we use it mostly at home. Can’t complain except that is loud but when you have a full house. The noise makes no difference.
This is better than oven. We cooked half chicken pieces in both and air fryer won.

  • Any cheap air fryers that go to 220C or higher?

  • Can anyone suggest a cheap quiet air fryer(preferably large enough for family of 4)? am a shift worker and would like to use at night without waking up the house, have an aldi one with deafening beeps when starting and finishing a cook.
