Hey Peeps,

I bought one of these for my Dad when they were $619 about a month ago, but they have dropped in price again.

They are a great phone, and they run the same A15 Bionic Chip as the IPhone 13 Pro

Currently on back order with Amazon, who will ship it out once they stock up again

Hope this may help someone out 👍

Was about to buy but 4.7" is too small.

    • +67

Personally I think 4.7" is average….and I bet it has a great personality!

      • its the ocean with motion, or someshit along those lines

    • +13

4.7" might seem small at first but it's definitely a grower not a show-er

    • +19

My wife thinks 4.7” is fantastic

      • +13

        She's just being kind

        • +13

Probably has a bigger phone she uses when he's not around.

      • +1

Depends on how thick your phone is.

    • Agreed 100%.

    • +2

Once you go over six you never go back 😂

      • +1

        speaking from personal experience?

      • +1

That's why I bought the Black, I meant Midnight version.

    • Depends how you use it.

  • -3

    This or iphone 11?

    • +4

      this 4 sure

      • +38

Thanks, picked up an iPhone 4 for $40 on eBay.

    • +1

      Both

    • +8

      Neither

    • +2

      Yes

    • +5

SE has 5g but smaller screen.

The 11 has a better camera but 2 generations slower chip.

Same screen contrast and brightness, same sensors… but 11 is also heavier.

I'd personally take the smaller screen and faster processor of the SE, especially considering the 11 would have a battery in it that's a few years old already just sitting there on the shelf. The 11 will be 3 generations old in a week or two as well. SE for sure.

      • +16

You realise that Apple still manufactures "new" iPhone 11 phones right? It's not just leftover stock from three years ago 😄

      • +5

You forgot the poor battery life
Iphone 11 trumps this anyday of the week

    • Small or big?

  • +9

Epic nickname, you get a +

  • I was going to say why don’t you just buy a 13 mini but looked it up and the price is twice as much as this!

  • +12

I prefer this smaller size. I still have the previous SE. I don't want a huge phone in my pocket, it's awkward.

    • +5

is that a huge phone in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?

    • apple designed the SE size phones so that it can be operated with one hand …….reach any part of the screen with your thumb …… there is a reason this size exists and it’s not because of a cheap display as it’s smaller ….. great on train as i can hang onto the overhead rail with one hand when i don’t get a seat and operate phone with the other hand.

that doesn’t mean you should drive and text because now you have one hand on the wheel whereas before you had no hands on the wheel ….

      • Lots of phones you can change screen size to allow one handed use.

      • Nah, it was an old design. SE is there to keep people wanting to be Apple ecosystem, but don't want to spend too much money. The CPU upgrade helps people feel that the phone is mostly up to date and Apple doesn't need to release a new SE every year.

Apple now have phone models in majority of price brackets and that's a smart move. Generally, if you want to use Apple iPhone, there should be a phone that suits your budget.

Let's face it, if iPhone 12 Mini or 13 Mini is at the same price as iPhone SE 2022, I am sure most people will use 12 Mini / 13 Mini.

        • +2

It's a very dated design mainly for people who can't /unwilling to move away from the bottom button interface. It takes up so much of the otherwise useful screen area.

          • +1

@EarlyBird: If you compare the amount of apps that displays on a home screen between the SE screen and the iPhone 13 Pro Max screen it's still just a grid of 6 * 4. You might be able to see more in a browser or more emails but it's not that much of a difference.

The main benefit of a larger screen is if you're going to watch movies or something, where you can fill the screen with the video.

    • The Galaxy S22 is barely bigger, the iPhone Minis are smaller. But their screens uses the full available surface area so you can't go back once you've tried them. Not to mention everything else is ten times better.

  • +9

Have one of these for work
    The battery life is abysmal
And the screen is tiny for my liking

Would get an xr over this anyday

    • +17

I bought the SE 2020, worst phone ever. Do not buy the SE at all. The battery life is extremely bad, like 3 hours on screen on time max or 5-6 hours of daily use.

Either get the XR or the iPhone 11 but dont waste money on this. For this price, the Pixel 6a is a much better purchase.

Buying one even for an older family member is criminal and should be prosecuted. Your family are humans and not animals meant to be tortured with this garbage. Get them an XR or iPhone 11.

      • Fair point

      • +9

Don’t sit on the fence, what do you really think?

      • +12

You can't really compare the 2020 version to the 2022 version, which this deal is for. It's like if the deal is for an iPhone 13 Mini and you're comparing it to an iPhone 12 Mini.

They increased the battery size in the 2022 SE, and it has a newer and more efficient chip. There are videos on Youtube that compare the battery life, this video shows that it has 7 hr 16 mins battery life compared to the 2020 which has 5 hrs 1 min. Granted that was on WiFi only and no 4G was connected.

Not everyone wants to move from iOS to Android either.

I'd gladly buy a 2022 SE because a) I don't do much with my phone except the usual email, Google, browse OzBargain, text and take photos and b) I've always thought FaceID sucks because if you're in bed with your face half in a pillow it doesn't work, or if your phone is on the table you have to pick it up to scan your face, or half stand up to hover over it. I use an XR for work and have an iPhone 8 and would go with the 8 over the XR any day of the week.

    • I like the screen size but why does the battery life have to be so poor??

      • +1

I guess much less volume for the battery in the smaller case.

      • because 4g / 5g is more power hungry and all the other apps you use also take more juice to run than the ones available back in 2010.

to accommodate for this, phones (and their batteries) have become bigger, but you can't fit a big battery into a small phone and phones require much more juice to run these days, even the small ones.

it's a shame, it was nice when you could go weeks without charging your phone because you didn't use it nearly as often as we do these days, although even if you don't use it often, you can't go much more than 3 - 4 days without charging it.

    • Still use my XR and will continue for a while, it's a great phone!

  • +9

I'd buy this phone for the design alone, but the battery life is the killer. In my opinion, apart from then battery life it's the perfect small phone. Love the home button. I had the iPhone 7 for 4 years, and currently have an iPhone 8. They have the same design as the current SE. Don't need a big screen because I use my tablet for nearly everything.

Unfortunately, they also all have abysmal battery life, especially after using them for 2 or 3 years.

Maybe no problem if you carry a battery bank, but then what's the point of having a small phone?

    • +2

This SE has much better battery life than the 2nd gen.

    • When the 8 was released I remember the battery life being quite good, I think Apple did well in balancing the battery size and chip efficiency when designing the 8.

The battery life would obviously degrade after 2-3 years so saying it has bad battery life after 2-3 years doesn't really make sense. My 8 is at about 75% battery health and its battery life is noticeably worse. The newer iOS would probably suck more power on standby etc. but I'm wondering what kind of battery life you'd get if you replace the battery in your 8 (trying to do this myself atm).

      • +1

My 8 goes 24 hours or more. Right now it's on 58% and it was charged to 67% 20 hours ago. Not sure how accurate that is and it's gotten not much use in that time, but you get the gist. Battery health is still showing 100%

  • +2

I bought an iphone SE 2020 to replace my Galaxy S9. The smaller sceensize did annoy me a bit but could have adjusted it was the quality of the screen that put me off. Compared to the S9 screen it looked terrible. So i sold the SE and am still limping along on the S9

    • +3

If you want small size, give the S22 a whirl.

      Reasonably compact

  • +2

Poor battery life is the deal breaker.

  • +1

With the poor battery life I'm assuming you have wi-fi & BT on and searching the internet or socials?
I need to replace my parents ageing iPhone 4S's they don't use anything other than the camera & phone functionality.
Prefer to keep them on Apple as they have iPads as well.

    • Many reviewers have noted the poor battery life. Perhaps wait for a 12 mini and pay a bit more.

      • 12 Mini battery life isn't that great either according to reviews/feedback and comments on deals here on ozbargain.

        • Yep. I have a !2 mini and gets me through 24 hours with pretty heavy use after hours. Wouldn't be enough if I was glued to it all day though.

    • +4

I know most people think parents should use cost effective phones, but for me, I give them better iPhones than what I have (at least phones with larger / largest screen). They don't have good eyesight and honestly, they do know (that you've gone cheap on them, but they are too nice to say anything). Battery life is something they do care. They do spend a lot of time on their iPhones, often more time than me.

Anyway, if you are on a limited budget, then I guess you can consider SE for them. I am somewhat glad that Apple will introduce iPhone 14 Plus (or Max) this year because iPhone 14 Pro Max is out of my price bracket. Hoping to get one of my parents iPhone 14 Plus this year. The other one will probably need to wait another year.

If you are on a tight budget, for parents, I think go for at least iPhone 11 (OW's price seems pretty good though we all probably prefer iPhone 11 to be even cheaper). Better battery life and larger screen. They don't need A15 and they will notice the camera improvement, especially at low light.

      • they say my iPhone 11 Pro is too big, they are happy with the size of their 4's at it is just a phone for them. I want to keep the option with a home button as well as dad was confused as to what was the top of the phone when trying out my 11 pro.

        thanks for they advice.
When I had my own business they used to just get the older phones as I upgraded the team.
This was started with the good old 2210.

  • +1

$590, tiny battery, only 64gb non expandable, small screen. I understand people liking the newer apple stuff that costs a fortune - but can anyone explain how the lower end stuff like this could at all be considered a bargain when it's what I'd expect in a $300 android phone?

    • +8

Probably because despite the small screen/battery, it's still a very high-quality product. Excellent camera with amazing video capability for a phone. Extremely loud, clear speakers. Nice design and finish. Super-fast processor. OS, software, and ecosystem that are smooth, intuitive, and reliable. Really nice home button that feels like a real click but will never wear out because it's not mechanical. Small and thin, fits in any pocket without feeling uncomfortable or heavy.

      • +2

iPhones generally go for at least 3-4 years without slowing down much as well. My iPhone 8 is still quick on iOS 15.4.1, although it needs a new battery.

The main risk of this phone is if Apple design and optimise iOS mainly focused on their phones with bigger batteries, which will cause the battery life in this one to decrease.

    • +2

It’s a bargain because it’s much cheaper than RRP.

  • +2

I have 2nd gen SE. Love the size and the physical button. Its great at most things , but really poor in others.
3rd gen unfortunately doesn’t seem to improve the two biggest problems.

Battery is slightly bigger in 3rd gen but reviews suggest actual battery life is much the same. I’m sick of always wondering if I’ve got access to a charger through the day/night.
No night mode camera. I’m not out and about talking night club selfies so I didn’t think this would matter, but in any situation with mildly low light light this phone becomes useless.
It really takes away from the practical usage of a modern phone as a multitool.

I think I’ll have to keep waiting for a deal on a 13 mini.

  • +1

almost double the price for the 256gb… seriously?

    • That's apple for you.

  • +3

Lots of BMW about the SE but most don't get that Apple designed this purposefully as it goes easily into a hip pocket and doesn't advertise itself like the TV screen size tablets that (mostly) women like to display hanging out of their jeans, and btw in many parts of the world these would be stolen in a heartbeat. In my experience men particularly like the SE size Iphone for the reason given and this iteration is welcome.

    • -3

      I can confirm
Men do not particularly like this size phone

  • Are you a Real Estate agent? lol

  • That price can purchase a Samsung Note 10 which give you huge advantage of battery life.

  • Can I please ask who is selling this phone via Amazon?

  • +1

    How many users are aware?
    How many care?

Both Apple and Google get detailed location and device usage data even when you think you're offline. Disabling location, wifi, bluetooth is just for third-party apps. Not Apple and Google. They are exempt.

    • Im in the list of the ones who don’t care.

  • Amazon is currently price matching Catch and looks like they’re having 10% off across all iPhone models, including this SE and iPhone 12/13 Minis

  • Coming up as $717 for me.

    • +1

That’s for the red one.. The Black one was the one for $590 pre order

      • Do you have a link to the black one? My old man is after one of these but I can only find the red one on Amazon… 😓

        • +1

Looks like they’ve pulled them mate..

I grabbed one for my old man, and he refused to transfer from his iPhone 6S.

Now it looks pretty in the box 😂😂

  • Has anyone's backorder shipped yet?

    • Nope, still waiting. :|
