[Prime, SUBS] Lord of The Rings - Rings of Power @ Prime Video

30246

This is unlike other SUB deals posted here, because this show is the biggest thing coming to streaming this year! And like 90% of Ozbargain has PRIME so no one should complain about having to pay to watch this!

Description:
Beginning in a time of relative peace, we follow an ensemble cast of characters as they confront the re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

LOTR haters can stay away from this post please :)

Mod: Users who wish to Block "Additions to Streaming Services" can do so by clicking on the Streaming Service Addition tag, then clicking the 3 dot menu, then clicking hide on new deals and/or front page. Ensure that on the home page, the new front page is selected for customisation to show. Video Instructions here or More info here.

      • Is Wheel of Time worth watching/skimming through before reading? Because it could explain the lore and characters a bit even if it's crap?
And then you'd have the books which would be much better?

        • Honestly it depends.

If you aren't much of a reader then just watch the TV show and enjoy what you can because the books will take you quite a while. If you enjoy reading and really getting into a long journey of a story, ignore the show and start on the books as the show has ruined certain key concepts of the universe that would make you very confused translating that to the book universe.

Is there any way to stop these 'PSA's that aren't deals but just tell you when a TV show is streaming?

    • +3

      Apparently not.

I've tried blocking them, per the instructions on earlier posts… yet it doesn't seem to work.

    • GIF animation on how to block a certain tag. Works with any tag, not just Streaming Service Addition
      https://imgur.com/S8pNWug

You can also add SUBS into your list of Title tags and then de-prioritize it by dragging the slider all the way to the left. See Animation

If the OP forgets to tag Streaming service addition, then having the subs title tag blocked will also do the trick. It's best to apply both types of filters if you want to catch everything in the net.

If you prefer to not see any Prime Video deal posts at all, just click the "Hide" link under the deal post and click "Hide Deals from Amazon Prime Video".

      • Thanks :)

      • +3

I've got a suggestion - what if there was a calendar section that you could check?
All these new releases, updates to subscriptions (e.g Amazon First Reads, Humble Bundle etc.), and things open for pre-orders could be added there, and we could manually select what we wanted a reminder about.
Not sure how hard that would be to implement.

      • It still shows up on Top deals, when it's not even a deal. Is there any way to stop that do you know?

    • +18

Just scroll past them, perhaps? It's not like the entire site is flooded with these deals.

      • +1

        exactly

      • +4

But then where will they complain?

These comments elicit memories of this classic Simpsons moment

      • +2

More like the entire site is flooded with computer parts

        • PS5 and SSD

    • +1

It's literally right there in the description of every one of these deals.

      • +5

        Not reading, just negging

        • +4

OP didn't use "Streaming Service Addition" tag. See above.

Same. Enjoy those downvotes, every one of them was somebody saying REEEEEEEE

Imagine being this angry about something but it's happening anyway despite clenching their tiny fists and stamping their tiny feet, and that's true of pretty much everything in their lives 🤣

          • +2

            @GrueHunter: Your cope is palpable

            • @Daz91: Sorry, am busy watching awesome show

@GrueHunter: I just watched it, absolutely terrible. Must be embarrassing for you

        • +1

How does it feel to be ratio’d this hard for that smoothbrain take

          • @Daz91: Muh muh ratios, seethe some more neckbeard :)

          • @Daz91: So like the 7:1 positive votes for this post? LOL

I wonder what's black dwarvish for "suck it up princess"

            • +2

@GrueHunter: Wow you’re really invested in shilling for this terrible show. Must be exhausting

  • +43

Thoughts and prayers to all the OzBargainers who didn't want to see this SUBS post and were inconvenienced by it so much that they felt the need to post about it.

    • +5

      nOt a dEal!!!

    • Only way it’s going to change it ay,
The results of the poll on this issue were ignored

Normal part of what you pay for a streaming service not a deal

      • +6

Or you could just exclude deals with the SUBS tag, as is pointed out in the description of literally every single one of these deals.

        • -6

Not a (profanity) deal in any sense and this will gain momentum as people get more sick of these useless posts…. Simple

Remove the comment to downvote and these posts would show a real reflection of how the community feels on this issue

          • +3

@thesainter: Wasn't the poll in the forums and not the front page, so all the people who don't read the forums wouldn't have seen it to vote on it, and therefore it is not necessarily an accurate representation either (if the comment to downvote requirement is considered to make the vote count an inaccurate represetation)?

            • +1

              @Domingo: I don’t read the forums either…

Like I said this will pick up momentum, don’t see the latest Bridgeton being posted just skews to certain fanboy content

Also negative vote limits skew the results

              • +1

@thesainter: Talking about "skewed to fanboys" is like saying deals are "skewed to tech"? Who cares? If it skews one way that's because more people are apparently into it right? Just block the category if you hate it that much and move on. What harm is there in allowing subscription content updates?

                • +3

@themadman: Because ozb is not a feed for curated upcoming streaming releases

Especially content that anyone with an interest in knows about, a year or more in advance

              • @thesainter: "everybody is wrong except me you'll see"

                • +2

@GrueHunter: the 1st 'not a bargain' post has 85 + 16 (downvotes) =101 votes, not a small amount is it champ

                  • -1

@thesainter: Looks like 7:1 ratio of positive votes for this one, "champ"

                    • +1

@GrueHunter: You missed the part where we discussed a down vote needs comment and is not a true representation, especially when bitter sad little people like you hate vote…you have 25 comments in this post, as the kids say go touch some grass

You could have watched the entire episode in the amount of time you spend shit posting in this thread

  • +5

If only they stuck to Tolkiens work, should be fine for those that haven't read the books ;)

    • +1

I think it's pretty interesting spin on the lore that they gave some characters time traveling abilities, since a few of them appear in eras they are not supposed to be in

    • -5

Tolkien did a hell of a lot more than The Hobbit and LOTR.
Unfortunately, none of it is good.

    • I don't think they were actually allowed to.

    • They fired the lore expert so they could hire an intimacy coordinator. :P

  • +4

    Reviews are poorly

    • +1

      Poorly what?

    • +6

83% on Rotten Tomatoes from 124 critics, doesn't seem "poorly".

      • +12

You mean paid shills, not critics. 83% from critics is a bit of a red flag these days.

        • +3

Geez the haters are wild on this. "The reviews are bad" "No they're mostly good" "Well they're not real reviews"
The Tolkien fanbase not looking very attractive to me. So much desire to burn anything they feel crosses whatever lines they've erected.

          • +5

@Tinqer: As a Tolkien fan I don't care if I'm attractive to you or not 😂 You want to watch it, watch it. Just saying that the critics have stopped being a reliable gauge of the quality of a show a long time ago, as they invariably insist on letting their own biases and conflicts of interests dictate the reviews of the shows that they like AND hate. The Terminal List is the best recent example of the latter. Critics hate it, fans love it.

      • +11

        Believing "critics" on RT 😂😂😂

        • +6

Someone who’s seen the show vs. some rando with a comment on ozbargain, hmmm…

          • -1

@bobmonkey17: I wonder if there's a script that'll just let me replace most comments with "something something MSM!" I wouldn't be missing much of the detail.

      • +5

amazon even paid influencers to give good ratings for it

        • Got to say that when you look into the RT audience scores, most of them, 1 or 5 stars, are from people who have never rated a thing before.

Having watched it, I'd say it would be impossible to give it a true 5 star rating, even if you were generally positive about the idea. In particular the story is slow and the acting ropey - so even if you weren't a Tolkien purist you'd have to mark it down. If you ARE a Tolkien purist however, 1 star is perfectly believable - Tolkien in name only.

Upshot, yep, I'd say someone has been paying for review spamming.

      • +3

        What is the audience score?

        • +1

The audience…that hasn't seen it yet?

          👏
          👏

          👏

        • +2

event if you see Google reviews there are so many fake 5 stars calling it amazing and better than GOT after watching 2 episodes .. Amazon spending a lot on paid reviews

      • +2

Rotten Tomatoes is indirectly owned by Disney

  • +10

LOTR haters can stay away from this post please :)

Im not a hater, in fact a huge fan of both the novel and movies. What’s shown do far doesn’t give me much confidence that this series will live up to the expectations. It’s visually impressive but will deliver in where it counts?
So far it looks like all flash and no substance but we’ll have to see

  • +7

"LOTR haters can stay away from this post please :)"

My understanding is that the Tolkien nerds are up in a froth about this.

So us LOTR haters are actually the winners. We get a fancy high budget tv show. And get to watch nerds tear themselves apart over perceived canon violations.

    It's gonna be great.

    • +6

Exactly what I’m thinking. It’s the LOTR fans that take issue with it rather than the haters.

We get a fancy high budget tv show.

Honestly if they want to rewrite large parts of Tolkien’s works then maybe it should have been an original work that is inspired by Tolkien rather than directly linking it. Of course they wouldn’t do that because they want the IP which carries all the weight from the books and movies

      • +2

        | an original work that is inspired by Tolkien

this is who they're competing against ;)

        • -1

          Enter every high fantasy series

        • +3

I loved the part where Galadriel shouted “avengers assemble” and Avada Kedavra-ed the patriarchy straight to Westeros. Totally one of the scenes ever made, couldn’t stop crying

      • -4

        It's not LOTR fans.

It's white boy snowflakes who say they're LOTR fans.

See also Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Doctor Who…

        • +4

Caring about consistency with characters, lore and style of the established IP doesn’t make you a “snowflake”. It’s not fair to the fans to piggyback of the success of a beloved franchise by contradicting or damaging previous works.

        • +1

Why are you racist against white people? That's not cool, mate.

          • -1

            @bargainerpro: Stop me

            Also, not your mate, pal

            • +1

@GrueHunter: Are you also racist towards other people or just towards white people?

Why this hatred towards people with this specific skin colour?

        • +2

not true … I'm not white and I hate it

    • +8

Well it's not exactly about perceived canon violations. It's about how it's a quick cashgrab, with Amazon just wanting the IP name to get people. They don't care about the product, just the marketing.
It's how the cast, screenwriters and producers are blatantly trying to turn the series into something its not. It's not a GoT equivalent, it is a lot more wholesome than constant sex and gory violence, and gender politics. LotR was about self-sacrifice and heroism, not hedonism.

They even admitted they wanted a 'blank canvas' for the story in one of their interviews. Like, whats the point of signing up for LotR if you want to create your own world and story?

You can have all the SFX and high budget you want. It does nothing if the writing and plot is simplistic and boring.

  • +1

Does anyone know what subtitles this will have at launch? I'm hopeful it's like most other Amazon content and have a huge range. Honestly that's one of the best things about Amazon Prime.

    • +1

      English and Kawishana at launch.

    • +3

As long as subtitles are in Elvish for us purists

      • +5

You’re not a true fan unless you use Entish subtitles
