From UMart? I recently bought an item from UMart, price is good, but the item I received appeared to have been opened (i.e. second hand).

      • that surprised me. A friend of friend bought 2 single stick of kingston value ram at the same time from Umart SA, which end up being 2 different revision (one Hynix based and the other Nanya based) went to Umart and got told it's opened and can't be refunded as either is faulty.

What surprised us even more is when we went into MSY trying to see if they are able to match either stick (because you won't be able to see the item you buying from Umart physically before you actually order it), they didn't know it's from Umart in the first place, so they asked for receipt so they can quickly refund them.

Lucky enough they do have 1 stick the same so my friend of friend didn't took a big hit.

        • There's no way for retailers to confirm a product you have was purchased from them for Kingston.

As long as you have a valid invoice (ABN, store name, etc) Kingston will accept the claim ;)

I bought a motherboard the other day, was completely sealed. Did you pickup or have it delivered?

I don't trust UMart enough yet to use them more, because I've never had an issue with PLE (local PC store here in WA), and started using Amazon AU for other stuff as their warranty process is decent.

        • Delivered, one of the included cables was opened, card itself doesn't have any anti-static bag.

TBW is a measurement of warranty, not a measurement of reliability.

This ssd seems like SLC cache based with no DRAM cache, I guess the performance would be lower than MX500, I have bought one of this SSD in 250G years ago for my second PC and it doesn't slow down the system enough for me to notice, by now it probably had several change in revisions so can't say anything about it anymore.

    good price though.

it uses SM2259XT… To make things easier to understand, there is another infamous SSD that uses the same chipset: BX500. This SSD apparently uses Micron NAND chips. So, is it in the same class as BX500? Sure price like a BX500 class SSD.

This one is TLC, 1TB/2TB BX500 use QLC now.

To complicate matter, the NAND grade on BX500 is probably higher (could be Spectek still). It's a pick your poison exercise between the brands.

  • Was thinking of changing over my DVR to a 2tb SSD to stop the noise and reduce some heat in my entertainment unit it's obviously not a wise choice for continuous read and write is it?

    • Correct. Do you have a low RPM HDD in it? Maybe it needs some rubber to dampen the sound.

    • Yes I'd love to know if these are good for constant writing to i.e. Security camera recording

      • +1

SSD doesn't withstand that much write, especially constant write. For SVR etc, its a good idea keep using HDDs.

  • Probably not as bad as you're thinking, but not as good as a disk designed for reliability. Run the math and you'll see the stats are solid for most SSDs. Only trouble is that when it dies, the data cannot be recovered, at all.

    • My main concern isn't the performance. It's more about the warranty. The warranty for this type of SSDs need to be through UMart and my most recent experience with them is subpar. In my case, if the item had been opened, it should be mentioned in the item description.

      • Did you raise it with them? My local umart would fix something like that pretty fast.
