Credit Card (Qantas edition) Pro-rata refund of annual fee list

Hi all,

I went on a bit of a CC (Qantas) craze and racked up a nice sum of Qantas points.

Just want to share with you all the CC that allows Pro-rata refunds of the annual fee:

  • Qantas Premier Platinum - Pro-rata refund via telephone. You will need to call them up and ask for it. My account is about 1 and a half months old post-annual fee. I am getting about $190 back from $225. They will send the refund via cheque.

  • Westpac Altitude (Qantas) - Pro-rata refund via telephone & Live chat. You will need to ask for it. My account is about 2 months old post-annual fee and I was able to get the full annual fee back ($49). They will transfer it to a nominated bank account within 3 bd.

  • NAB Qantas Premium Card - Pro-rata refund via telephone & Live Chat. You will need to ask for it. My account is about 2 months old post-annual fee and I was able to get the full annual fee back ($250). They will transfer it to a nominated bank account within 10 bd.

Other users experience

  • @Autonomic - ANZ - telephone - Full refund after 2 months post-annual fee payment.

  • tried both phone call and message in App, no luck to get pro-rata refund. i had a qantas black card

“ The Annual fee and Rewards Program fee is payed up front and part of term's and condition.

This in Non-Refundable, and you were granted the promotional points and cashback.

Please speak with the Closure to check for options.

    Thank you.”

    • Is that Qantas money?

Qantas Premier Platinum Card - Called and was denied a refund.

Will try again tomorrow. I feel like these depends on the REP you get.

    • Tried a second time - Denied.

Maybe ill try during Aus business hours.

  • I tried to get a refund twice over Live chat for my NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Card.
I was told no both times, since I already received the points.

  • Just called up to see if I could get a prorata refund on my Bank of Melb Qantas Amplify Signature. Unfortunately I left this one a bit late to cancel (I met the min spend two months back but kept the card for travel insurance). The call person said they can only see transactions in the last 90 days, and my annual fee was paid back in Dec, therefore no refund.

Like a few people here, I rang up asking for a refund and was denied. Escalated to a manager and they too said no deal because I had received lounge and bonus points.

Anyway I called back again and this time I asked to downgrade to their Everyday card which has a $99 fee. More importantly when you change products, you get an annual fee pro-rata refund of the old card back but obviously you still need to pay the new card annual fee.

So all up for 100k points cost me $349/12 + $99 = $128. A more palatable alternative if you get rejected for an outright refund.

    • Nice work. I wonder if this works with their Titanium card too?

      • Yes it would but keep in mind you would pay at least a month of the annual fee, maybe 2. I'm not sure exactly what I'll get charged as the refund won't be processed until I activate my new card.

If you can get the bonus 30k points with the Platinum card if it's your first points earning card in 12 months then I think it's better value than the Titanium card.

Bonus QF Points Effective AF QFP/$ AF Min Spend QFP/$ (AF+Min Spend)
        100,000 $128 780.74 $3,000 31.97
        70,000 $128 546.52 $3,000 22.38
        150,000 $199 753.77 $5,000 28.85

Nice work! This would be a really good alternative. I am wondering if you are able to ask for AF Refund on the downgraded card considered you dont receive any bonus points on that :)

Haha didn't think of that. I'm definitely going to give it a crack and update with what happens.

    • Awesome find. Was about to cycle onto ANZ ff black but this is just straight up better points per dollar. And no PITA calls from ANZ

FYI NAB has stop giving out annual fee.

      • any luck with Anz?

So I received my new card today and activated it and there were no issues. I was even able to use my old card leading up to getting my new card.

It turns out the annual fee was prorated refunded on 2 Jul. 2 months was charged so got a refund of $290.83. A somewhat nice surprise is that only 10 months of my new annual few was charged which was $82.50.

I might see if I can get a further refund later in the month when I look to cancel my new card altogether…haha

      • Nice. Did the pro-rated refund get credited automatically or did you have to ring them up and get them to do it manually?

        • +1

          It was all done automatically.
