  • $40 at Hairhouse in Melbourne on weekdays and $45 on Sunday.

    • $40 at Hairhouse

For $40 you might come out with more hair then when you went in. Joke.

      • everyone needs a wage lift but my employer thinks otherwise. It used to be $30 before Covid.

  • Used to pay 35 and now its 40 in Oakleigh VIC

    • But how much is house prices in Oakleigh now? $1.5m? You got off lightly.

If people really want cheap hair cuts in Melbourne I'd suggest Craigieburn, Berwick, Packenham. Apparently suburbs suffering from the highest mortgage stress.

      • You are forgetting $2/litre petrol. That drive from where I live will drown me in petrol debt. šŸ˜‚

        • You are forgetting $2/litre petrol

U91 was $1.529 per litre in the north where I locked it in last week.

The east gets ripped off big time to compensate cheaper prices in the North and West.

      • Not cheaper than $25-30 in SE Melbourne as well.

        • -1

That is cheap for Brighton. Houses there are what $3m?

      • +2

Not everyone living in Oakleigh is a Houseowner. We have lots of people renting apartments who canā€™t afford to rent in the city..

        • We have lots of people renting apartments who canā€™t afford to rent in the city..

Apartments in the city about $500pw for a small 2BR (has gym and pool) up to $650pw in a larger 2BR.

How much is people paying in Oakleigh? Probably $400pw which is almost price of renting a house. Interesting perception of value.

  • +2

$60+ because i wear a toupee and can only go to one specific salon

  • You should be able to get a haircut for between $12 to $15 at an ethnic minority barbershop (Arab, Iranian or Indian) in Western Sydney, as long as it's a "machine cut" (i.e. no scissors).

    • yes and make sure you're fully immunised before you go. Had an awful haircut (undercut pomp) from Iranian salon in Doncaster, scalp infection after- to be fair she was gabbing with her employee behind her the entire 30 minutes. I did not get my pomp. I got a lot of product and long nails scourging.

  • $0 cos mrs. learnt to cut hair in the first lockdown and haven't paid for a haircut since. I bought a decent kit from Amazon which does a great job haha

  • spent $30 on a trimmer from Big W 5 years ago, that plus shaver cut my hairdresser costs to 0.

  • +2

$40 every fortnight. Not cheap, but worth it for me.

  • +2

$35 I get one every three weeks. Why not?
I get a wash with a good head massage and then they style it with some product.

Consider it like a pedicure for the ladies.
Do it often and enjoy yourself.

    • Sounds girly. For years I had a skin head with a west German Wahl. Hair is for girls.

  • +1

I usually settle for around $20-$25 and this had been the last 15 years. If they are decent I would pay up to $25 or $20 for average. They keep increasing their prices and I keep looking for new places that are cheaper. Very much like NBN. You need to make an effort to save your own money.

  • $30 at a proper hairdresser for a trim and treatment. My hair is so long I rarely get it cut.

  • I've had one professional haircut in the last 12 years, and that was only because my neighbour needed someone to experiment on.

Mens short hair cuts are really easy. I go for the short back and sides, do the sides with clippers (~$50, last for a decade) and trim the top with some hair scissors from eBay (about $20, last forever). You'll want either a second mirror or a second person to check the back at first, but you get good at it after a few times.

    • +2

I've had one professional haircut in the last 12 years, and that was only because my neighbour needed someone to experiment on

I'm not sure I'd call this "professional"! haha

      • Well, she's a hairdresser and owns her own salon. I went to the salon to get it styled. She just wanted someone who was willing to have their hair crazy colours.

  • +1

    Plenty of $10-$15 around Hurstville

    • +1

      name the place(s) pls

      • Gloria Hair Style for e.g.

  • I got sick of getting reaaaaaally bad/random haircuts from dropping in to different places in shopping centres, with one particular shocker tipping me over the edge to find a high-end place near the end of 2019. When I found the new place, they were charging $50. Then it went up to $60. Then, during the pandemic, upped it again to $80. Now that same place charges $100.

While the quality is top notch, I felt the increase from $50 to $100 to see the same person in just 2 years was too much, so now I've found another where I've stepped it back down to $55-65 depending on who I get to do it - their prices have also gone up.

    • $100 from $50 pre pandemic is surely taking the p!ss.
Especially if it's just for a men's cut where it's usually under 30 mins.

  • +1

Don't have much hair left and have been shaving it myself for many years now. Very cost effective.

  • $35 MAX ideally 20-25 is reasonable esp if you pay cash

  • I mean, I buy my own razor blades, so depends if we count that, otherwise $0. Do it in the shower 1-2 times a week.

My beard, however, I get a professional to do maybe once every 6-12 months, which is about $20ish. Used to do it myself, but a barber is less likely to mess it up than I am.

  • Went up from 35 -> 45. Free drink (which I don't have since I don't drink beer), no wash, no massage - feeling a bit ripped off after seeing some of the other comments on here.

  • +6

i feel i'm going to get flamed but what the hell….

I pay $60 (cut, wash & massage) at a fancy shop in Sydney CBD next to my office… my rationale is that this place works off appointments so I can book in around my lunch break and be done with it compared where i used to go which costs $30-35 but is a 30min drive each way plus waiting around for 30-45mins to get a cut.

Cuts are always very good and I save a lot time so it's the price to pay to have nice hair lol

  • -1

100 PHP in Luzon or 50 VND Bui Vien, HCMC.
    $2.50 or $3

Stuck in Victoria for Covid damn near killed me

  • Was paying $35, but haven't had a haircut since February..

  • ive been cutting my own hair and beard for nearly 10 years, not just a crew cut, I give myself a mad fade and use a straight edge razor to finish off the neck, ears and beard.

  • forgetting bald people or zero length cuts which they do at home (myself included) for my son we pay $35, and the hairdresser takes about 30- 40 minutes, at that rater per hour and they pay rent, etc it seems better value than masseurs per hour or trades people.

  • Used to get no frill haircut for $10 at a shopping centre. Has gone up to $15 since June

  • Been using the same male hairdresser for the last 20 years started out being $10 these days it's $13 (I just give him $15), it includes 2 (yes 2) washes, shampoo and conditioner, and then cut.

    • you live in Australia?

  • Based on the poll, it looks like there are some great value hairdressers out there. Does anyone have any suggestions for a sub $30 haircut around Doncaster or CBD in Melbourne? Most places I see are around $35-$50.

  • Place I go used to be like $25 (assuming they class it as a trim - so like an appointment would take 25-30 mins tops) and every 6th cut was free. Then it went up to $30 and every 6th cut was $20 off (so $10), now its like $35 and every 6th cut is $20.

I think that is pretty reasonable, been going there for like 12-13 years.

  • Massive jump. Was paying $15 mid week special or $22 other times.

    Now paying $35 or more.

  • +1

The increasing price of clipper cuts has priced me out of the market.

    I do my own.

Back of the neck is tricky but I wear a collar to work.

  • $60 @ japanese place in Sydney lower north shore

Take about 45 mins. Includes a cup of tea and wash & blow dry.

  • +1

I think of it as $40 * 26 (skin fade every two weeks to stay fresh) = $1040 a year on something that makes my mental health incredibly higher…but damn I wish it was $20

    • +1

jesus mate…. my grandpa use to say the difference between a good hair cut and bad hair cut is 2 weeks. i like going 2 - 3 months in between fade haircuts and try and align a cut for a special event. whats the point in constantly looking the same.

      • +1

I enjoy taking care of myself and feeling fresh šŸ¤·. $1k a year on something which makes me feel far better isn't something I'll bat an eye about when there's girls I know who spend thousands on hair/makeup/clothes every year. Most guys I know get a haircut at least once a month.

  • Stopped cutting my hair (and using shampoo) 2+ years ago; slicked back with natural scalp grease, it's fantastic.

  • +1

    Campsie $8 - last week
used to get haircuts in Springvale (VIC) for $8 but has gone up to $10 post covid.
Haven't seen anything cheaper than $8 in Sydney

    • where in campsie, name of the place

      • +1

Next to the fruit/veggie shop in the plaza area

Quick rush job.. under 10 minutes… good enough for me

    • No way the bloke doing a hairy for $10 is doing this job legally.

    • What's the name of shop in springvale ?

      • Tammy Le Hair Image

  • +1

    $80 but:

    • my hair is long
    • i get a style that needs approx. 90min work.
    • the guy specialises in this style and is usually booked out months in advance
    • i only go once every 2-3 months

Paying money for a quality cut that makes me feel good about my appearance beats the hell out of a $20 just cuts job. I get a bunch of compliments on it and tinder matches are up. Getting a hairdresser that actually enjoys their job and isnt just filling in time before picking up the kids/grandkids from school makes a world of difference.

  • Started off at $35 pre-covid, then $40, $43 and just this last week upped prices to $48.
Looked around and found a couple places cheaper but they did a terrible job and really rush you in and out, always ended up doing some trimming or tidy up afterwards.
Feels like cheap good cuts in Melbourne are very hard to find or just way out of my way to get to.

I try push it 6-8 weeks between cuts at those prices $40+

    • Balaclava has a hairdresser than does it for $15.

  • Zero cost for shaved to zero

  • +1

$30 pre covid, but bought clippers during lockdown and I've been cutting my own hair ever since. Normally took 40 mins to just drive to the hairdressers but I can cut it in that amount of time.

Just need some clippers, scissors, hand mirror, a bunch of YouTube tutorials and some hand/eye co-ordination.

  • Happy to pay no more than $30-40 for a cut at a barber shop. I like the vibe, the one at Hyperdom, Shailer Park QLD, near Kmart is excellent.

  • +2

My local Vietnamese increased from 10 to 15 over COVID, have to look else where now

  • Clippers only, just went up to $16.

  • Do it yourself and spend the money saved on a brazillian

  • -2

I pay $90 / month for my haircut

    • does that include a happy ending?

  • Number 7 top, number 5 back and sides done by me then wife trims my neckline every month for the last 12 years. No waiting and gets done exactly how I like it. I think my $20 clippers have paid for themselves by now.

  • +1

since covid i been cutting my own hair, got a wahl clipper and my hair style is easy, number 1-1.5 all around and top is comb over,(sometimes i get fancy and do a fade) sometimes i shorten the top with scissors but its still comb over. $30 in my pocket

to me its not even about the money, its the drive, and the wait time at the barber (last time i got a cold from the barber who was sneezing) and the annoyance of having hair stuck to my clothes while i drive back and hop in the shower. that whole process could take 2 hours. but if im doing it, its like 20 mins its so easy to do it yourself in the bathroom once you get used to it you cant go back. im so good i can even do the back line with a hand mirror and my wahl 5 star trimmer

    • same…

      no.2 around sides and back
its not hard after a while…

buy a hair umbrella/gown from amazon so clean up is easy too…
keeping the money is a bonus

      • can your hands move freely with the umbrella?

  • $50 for a beer, trim hair, eyebrows and ears. Local barber in St Kilda, and free mentos

  • +1

$40+ for general short haircut (non fare situation). Not sure where yā€™all are getting these $20 specials from.

  • Mine had been for over 10 years so would not trust anyone from $30 to now $45 +EFTPOS charge

  • Just cut used a bowl on the head of adult 16 years back

  • cut to zero at home (no guard) and let it grow for 3-4 months then repeat
this way i dont have to spend too long washing and drying my hair every day or having to style it like you would with longer hair

very practical and if you are like me and find long hair annoying i'd recommend it, very quick and very cheap

  • $80 once every 5 weeks.

  • +1

$35 for a skin fade in Rouse Hill. My barber spends 40-50 mins with clippers, foil shaver, and scissors and does an immaculate job.

    • Could you share which barber shop is that? Ta .

  • I love my Greek barber, minimal talking, gives me a shot of expresso and ouzo/grappa before my $20 cut which includes a beard trim.

  • ā€œ FREE FEEL to recommend affordable + quality hairdressersā€?? I havenā€™t found a hairdresser who offers that service. Yet. Not for less than $150.

  • My barber went from $25 to $27 recently.

Has been $25 for ages so no drama with the small rise.

  • Mine used to be $25 but since the pandemic started charging $35.

I'm not too fussed if that can keep some people employed and the economy turning.

  • Get some wahl clippers and do a 1, 2 or 3 all over.

Occasionally I'll pay for a fade because I've tried and failed doing it myself. Seems to be in the $30-$50 range these days depending if I include the beard as well

  • -1

    $35 + $100 tip.

  • I've been cutting my hair ever since covid. $0.

  • after COVID lockdowns closed my regular barber who last charged me $20 - uh, March 2020 ? - I haven't been back there since

I researched home hair clippers - tried WAHL - but they were way too NOISY like a gravel crusher next to my ear,

and bought quieter Remington instead - think the box looked like this - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/384638946993

    but I paid more like this $15 - https://www.target.com.au/p/remington-a-cut-above-haircut-kiā€¦

milady has cut my hair since - she takes about 20 mins cf the barber's 10 min - but I like the finished job a lot better

so that's $20 towards our next restaurant meal to enjoy !

  • -5

    $35, beer included :)

    • +2

I would tell them to keep the beer and knock $10 off the price of the cut.

  • St Albans, Vic

Me and my son get a cut at the same time for $24 all up.
    Cheap as.

  • Used to be a place in Brisbane city (Adelaide st) that would do $18 haircuts. The place was open for years and it was a no frills service but they did a decent haircut and it was quick and cheap. It has closed this year so back to paying $35 at some overly fancy place where people want to engage you in conversation and take their time cutting your hair. I miss the no frills, cheap and fast option.
