It depends where it’s located, if it’s in a shopping centre it needs to be $15 more to pay for the rent and the fitout of the shop.
If it’s in a run down old shop that’s been there forever on the high st, it should be $25-30

  • +71

    $0 with home shaver machine

    • +3

      Had a trim myself yesterday
      .

      • What "home shaver"?

        • +1

"Tiffany" which was a home brand of Cunningham's Warehouse which went out of business over a decade ago. It could be 20 years old
          .

      • +83

You're not very good at analogies are you?

        • -5

Not my best but it gets the point across. There's a world of difference between a DIY haircut with a bowl or home shaver kit, and a professionally blended one from a barber.

Having a high standard for your personal grooming goes a long way. Take the cheaper route by all means but don't pretend it's the same.

          • +9

            @SlavOz:

Having a high standard for your personal grooming goes a long way.

does that include licking your fingers?

            • @SBOB: Are…fingers part of grooming?

          • +3

@SlavOz: not sure why you're getting downvoted… I agree with you

          • @SlavOz: Not true. Some people's hair looks crap no matter who cuts it. Like mine. So I stopped going to the barber one day (20 years ago) when I wasn't happy with the haircut. Now I just cut it super-short, and everyone is surprised when I tell them I cut my hair myself, because I'm able to do the back of my head so neatly. Using my left hand to feel the length of the hair, and right hand to guide the clipper, I don't even need a mirror (except for the front). It takes me 10 mins with the clippers - back, sides and top, and scissors for the front.

Assuming I would have otherwise paid around $120/year for hair cuts, according to a compound interest calculator I've saved $3283 over the past 20 years (at an average savings interest rate of 3%) by cutting my hair myself. Spent $80 on clippers, leaving me with $3200 savings.

Of course, it's nothing compared to what I'm saving by giving up alcohol. I used to spend around $25/ week on wine. Using the compound interest calculator, I'll save $35,566 over the next 20 years by not buying alcohol.

        • +2

          I dunno, I liked it!

      • +1

        No… no it's not.

        • +3

Welcome to analogies 101, Slavoz will be your lecturer…

          • +2

@borrisz0r: I already had a low opinion of Australian education standards…

    • +3

….electricity costs are going up! 😋

      • +7

Get solar, only cut hair when the sun is shining

        • You need to account the cost of panels.

    • +1

Have been doing this since the pandy. I didn't go much to the barber anyway. Cut my own hair. People say it's decent. Last time, I told a new guy to take some off the top and he made me look like a clown and stole me $35.

  • +19

I like the ridiculous places that give a head massage and beer.

    • +41

It's more ridickulous if you take out the word 'massage'.

      • +3

        Cannibals'!

    • Those hipster barbershop? S

  • +5

i won't pay more than $20 for a haircut, but i've been shaving it myself for several years now, i can't remember the last time i went to get my hair cut by a professional.

    • +15

I thought as a Starship Trooper, you'd get free haircuts

    • +2

Yep, I've been shaving my head myself for a few years now, I went to a place inside a shopping centre two weeks ago, paid $30 and it's just reinforced why I was shaving my head myself.

      • i can see why a proper old school shave would be nice now and then, with the warm towels and everything, but not too often, maybe once a month.

  • +9

Price of a hair-clipper + scissors divided by the number of cuts.

Get's cheaper in the long run.

    • +1

Same principal as buying a mower vs hiring a handyman

      • +7

Actually with a handyman mowing your lawn you save yourself time. When you go to a hairdresser your time is being used anyways. Travel, booking and wait times add to it as well.

But yeah its still 'simpler' to go to a hairdresser. Just not the OzBargain way!

    • +3

It takes me much longer to clean up. Would do it if my hair was thin.

      • +4

buy a wireless one and do it outside or in the shower.

        • Won't it clog the shower drain?

          • +3

@silenthillrocks: i usually just grab up most of it and chuck it in the bin next to the shower, then have a shower and there's no mess to clean up, but i have pushed it down the drain before and never had a problem.

probably a good idea to keep a bin next to the shower and just chuck most of it in there.

you could also do it outside, you don't need a mirror, i use the remington rapid cut turbo and just feel with the empty hand as i go along until it's the same length (no guard) all over.

            • @[Deactivated]: I usually take a plastic bag with me in the shower if I'm cutting.
May I ask, how often do you buy replacement trimmers and do you oil your blades?
I buy cheap $20 clippers because I'm too lazy to take care of my blades. I end up buying a new pair each year or two.

              • @amrdeus: I've never oiled the blade, but I know i should.

Haven't needed to replace them yet, still on my first pair, though I am just letting my hair grow at the moment, havent used them in a few months

  • +4

    $0 with at home cuts.

  • +3

i think $35 is fair for a decent zero fade. $40 if you get a drink included.

  • +9

I get mine done at the local TAFE for $10 - always students needing models to get signed off on units.
Only downside is it takes about an hour in total and during the middle of the weekday.

Damn, I'm getting ripped off by my TAFE. $5 at Tamworth!

    • +3

and also get a knick from the shaver to your head. Hope those blades are clean. I speak from experience.

      • +1

Apprentices buy their own tools when they start - just like any other trade.

If you're worried about dodgy tools you can just ask for a scissor over comb cut for extra protection.

        • +2

If you manage to cut someone with a shaver I'd suspect you should be kept away from scissors.

Anyways. Stuff like that happens if you are starting out. But then I do crude cuts for a few people and have never cut them with the shaver or the scissors.

If I was an apprentice I'd tell people: this is going to take about an hour, chill out and relax. (Therefore no pressure)

          • +3

@netjock: They only start doing cuts on actual people a year into their course - after many many mannequins.

I mean sparkies don't start wiring up houses on their first week on the job, why would other trades be the same.

            • @SnowDragon: Sorry but (apprentice) sparkies do start wiring up houses first day on the job.

    • +1

Have done this once before. Not worth the time it took.

    • +2

Granville TAFE are always looking for male 'models' only $5. If they are desperate for people though it can be free just don't expect it & be nice 😉
I get my hair cut there, the students are always being watched & the teacher checks it before they are done so they don't miss anything. They do lots of hair & beauty stuff where they need people so it is cheap.
Downside, you don't have a choice of day & time & it could take longer as there might be a wait.

  • +26

Wife cut my hair this morning, and has been for the last 20 years! Thanks wife!

    • +8

Same here, she's not that bad either!

      • +17

His wife has been cutting your hair for 20 years too? Awkward ;).

        • -2

And there's no guarantee she only handles the hair up top.

        • His wife has been cutting his hair and he's been returning the favor by cutting his grass… 😆

      • Ah, so you are scotty's wife's boyfriend.

    • Yup, wife + clippers + scissors = great savings

      • Pretty sure Lorena Bobbitt’s husband disagrees

    • +6

how much do you pay her scotty?

      • -2

        He pays with free massages….lol!

    • Those paying $60 should be more like scotty

    • +2

But do you cut your wife’s hair?
I’ve been cutting my own hair for probably 20 years and been cutting my wife’s hair for over 10 years.

    • +18

Whilst I agree with the strategy, getting a wife so that you don't have to pay for haircuts is the most expensive way to get free haircuts.

      • +3

Especially if they stop being your wife.
        Ouch pricey! 😅

        • Are wives a high risk high yield investment?

    • Same here. She does it fine. Started with COVID but no barber fo9r me now.

    • Mrs B cut my hair during the Melbourne lockdowns, she watched a few YouTube videos and did a very good job.
But now I get it cut locally, as a cranky wife would cost me a lot more than $20 four times a year…

    • +1

      wife first, then barber second
      or
barbering first & it was so good, you wifed her ?! haha

  • Was paying $10, then it increased to $12 just before Covid. Doesn't include cost of travel - train fare say $4.

Now free with wife and she's pretty good too. Saves money but most importantly time.

    • Where is the place?

      • Central tunnel.

  • My husband gets it cut at a barber for <$20 in Sydney (not city). I think my 3 year old costs the same though.

    • where abouts?

      • +4

Parramatta, not inside Westfield. There are a few barbers around the side streets heading towards North Parramatta. It could be ~$20, my husband said it has gone up, but the other day it was $36 for the both of them and my son isn't usually much cheaper.

        • thank you

  • +16

Who the hell pays $60?!! Im pissed at payin $25

  • +4

$35-$50 is pretty much normal for a fade.

    • +1

      Yep - I'm at $40 - $50 for a fade locally.
Decent barbers though, not your generic shopping centre chop shop

      • For a buzz cut at a chop shop are fine!

  • +2

I pay $20 from an 'old boy' in a 'run down high street shop', even though its freshly painted every 5 years(ish). He even got a new seat not long ago.
Only issue is he's a Parra supporter.

    • +1

Talk him into not supporting a sports team and get on OzB, prices will drop to $15 with all the savings.

  • +4

I pay $55 - honestly, happy to pay it as a indulgence every couple of months. I always got irritatingly bad cuts at the cheapo places, and I like the experience of a nice place. Besides, why do women get to have all the fun with beauty services?

    • +2

100%. Mani Pedi never hurts boys. Indulge.

    • Every couple of months? Must be pretty messy by then?

      • +1

Yeah I go from quite short to quite long, gives a bit of variety. Couple of months was an exaggeration though, more like 6 weeks.

      • I go once a year maybe twice… $60 every few weeks?

    • +1

i want a scalp massage fro that price

  • +14

Mine is $60+, but i typically am actually paying for a Womens' haircut as I have long (below the shoulders) hair and that requires a lot more work than a typical male haircut.

    • Have a +1 - not sure why someone would neg you for sharing honest feedback.

    • Same. My hair isn't quite as long, but I pay $58 in Melb too.

$50 before covid, then went to $55 then $58

  • +1

I was on holidays on the Gold Coast and needed a haircut. It wasn't totally empty but had one person waiting, the price was cheap, something like $15, so why not.

God it was bad. Best part of it was when it grew back.. haha

Anyway, I'll stick to my $30-40 haircuts.

    • I have been to every $10/$15 haircut place on the GC. Can you remember where you went?

      • Trim Time @ Chevron..

My tip is to avoid. Or go there if you like to live dangerously.

      • $15 Ashmore City

    • Should’ve gone to Tweed Mall there’s a place there tha was $10 pre COVID, but now up to $17. Still better than any $40 haircut I’ve had.

      • I was on holidays, just picked a place that didn’t have a queue as I was walking past.

  • +6

I get bad hair cuts. Helps during pay rise conversations. Need more money for a decent hair cut.
