Cheap… real cheap… but are they any good vs sp-bs22lr or the mb42x? Good enough for a starter 5.1 or 2.1 setup perhaps?

These are much better than anything used on the market for $67, let alone new.

They can fill the room with bass and even the cross over is not bad at all.

  • Haven't used the cheaper range but for anyone looking the 350db are well worth it if you can get it around 300 shipped

    • +2

The S350B are in a class of their own - they can be a legit solution for a 2.1 home theatre system.

These P17s are a fun bookshelf to pair with a cheap class-D (fosi, etc) or used class-AB (gumtree or other classifieds) amplifiers.

Put em in the study, dormitory, garage, or shed - perhaps even a budget 5.1 HT.

      • These speakers will be my beginning on the audiophile journey.

Currently looking at a Fosi Audio BT10A to pair with these speakers, did you have any other possible recommendations?

        • try bt20a-s or aiyima a07

          • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: For the BT20a-s, would I need to purchase anything else?

            • @faygo dreams: https://www.amazon.com.au/Fosi-Audio-BT20A-S-Bluetooth-Integ…

Where do you plan to source your audio from? Do you have a DAC?

              • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: Planning to source my audio from a PC mainly. I do not have a DAC.

                • @faygo dreams: Well in that case you need an rca to 3.5 mm cable - https://www.amazon.com.au/AmazonBasics-3-5mm-2-Male-Adapter-…

                  • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: Fantastic. Ordered both via amazon and should receive by end of day.

                  • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: If you had to recommend an external DAC, what could I purchase as a budget option?

                    • +4

@faygo dreams: I wouldn't recommend a 'budget option' in the context of which you're probably thinking.

You would need at least $150 and then you'd be set for life, really - my recommendation is Topping… perhaps the D10s (which has a USB in and RCA plus TOSLINK and Coaxial out) or better yet, the E30 DAC, which has SPDIF and USB inputs - https://hifigear.com.au/collections/dacs/products/topping-e3….

I mean you could purchase something that's cheap budget, but the performance would be no better than the PC outputs lol, which is why you'd want a 'long term solution'.

Ideally you'd want a 'budget audiophile' set up to look as follows.

Source (streamer, PC, mac) —> DAC (Topping E30) —> Amp (Yamaha A-S301 or A-S501) —> Bookshelves (Wharfedale Diamond 12.2, Elac Debut B6.2, KEF Q150/Q350S, Q Acoustics 3030i, etc) ——> add a subwoofer later if need be (REL makes great subs, so they're suitable for music, but there's plenty of other ones out there).

This is a very budget setup and still costs 1.5-2k - so to start off with, the Fosi audio BT20A-S and P17s being fed by the 3.5mm port on your pc is totally fine.

Please note that there's no point of half assing this and that you only need to purchase this once in a lifetime, really - you can purchase used items though and make savings, but yeah, it's still not gonna be cheap cheap.

                      • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: Dude. Thanks for taking your time out of the morning to write this up. It reassures me that my money will be well spent and provides value especially in a new hobby. Have a great one!

                        • +1

@faygo dreams: No worries, i've been at it for 9 months now and i know how confusing it all can be at the start - so I've condensed it to give you something to work towards..

                  • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: I just bought the BT20A-S, the P17's plus this cable.

I note that the P17's say they come with speaker wire in the box, do you know if they have RCA plugs on one end to plug into the amp?
Also, is there any benefit to elephant plugs in terms of audio quality, or should I just screw the wire straight into the back of the speakers?

      • I use them for PC as I don't watch TV, if I did I would definitely buy another set for it, possibly the model with wireless sub depending on the room setup.

        • Yeah 100% - if i could go back in time, I'd shell out an extra $100 for the S360DBs - bigger mid range, better tweeter, and a wireless sub.

why does one of them have the circular bits on the front and the other is flat? soz I don't know a thing about speakers

    • +3

One has the grille on and one doesn't.

This is a legitimate question and the comment is being downvoted.

Not everybody is as familiar with topics that you might think is obvious.

You’re not born with it, you have to start somewhere.

  • +5

    'circular bits' lol

i asked the same thing about girls when i was eight.

  • This plus ~$80 amp or a active speaker? (I'm thinking R1855DB or R1380DB)

    • I feel separates always is the go. You can upgrade or even side grade to find the sound you like

  • Sorry for noob question. But how would these fair on a Creative G6 DAC? And I assume I would need an RCA to 3.5mm cable? At the moment I only have my G6 switching between ATH-40s and some creative pebble speakers at the moment which are not passive, I assume these are passive meaning won't need another external power source?

    • +1

These are passive which means they are not self powered. You will need an amp between the G6 and these speakers. Better off looking at something in the R series.

One of the reviews on Amazon says "I'm driving my P17's with Dynamic power of 150W@6 Ω (or a real minimum 85W per channel for 20 Hz to 20 kHz, 0.06% THD, 8 Ω) and they need a lot of juice to hit reasonable sound levels."

I find that very hard to believe.

    • +1

Yeah that's a load of shyt - these speakers go plenty loud from even a fosi audio BT20A-S, let alone my integrated amps and AV receivers.

They're 20 watt speakers, but those watts must be RMS.

I've taken mine apart and the woofers in this thing are huge, especially considering the price.

  • What sort of amp would I need to connect these speakers to my PC?

I am not an audiophile and I don't need bluetooth or anything fancy. My PC has the standard options for output… I guess optical out is the choice these days? I'm done with cheap Logitech speakers that make a splutter sound every time you wiggle the 3.5mm jack by accident.

Apologies if this question has been asked to death in previous Edifier bookshelf threads but I haven't had a chance to sit through and read them as yet.

  • Noting that a bunch of these are on special - any recommendations for some standalone bookshelf speakers for connecting to my laptop and phone via Bluetooth? Can't be bothered with an amp at this point.

  • I have these as rear surround speakers for my home cinema. They work fine for this, the bass goes through the subwoofer, so I don't have to worry about that.

  • Noob question here. I've just picked up a set of Edifier speakers and currently testing it out. Is it best to play songs without any equalisers on the phone/app and without the Dolby Atmos for eg? I know it comes down to sound preference but wondering if anyone actually uses app equalisers. Thanks!
