  • How this one compares to Samsung 980 Pro?

    • +5

It's Phison E18 based SSD so like the others with E18, the 2TB model gives both Samsung 980 Pro and WD SN850 really tough competition. E18 based SSDs tend to top most benchmark, especially sequential read / write. There are some reviews on this, but mostly not very comprehensive.

Performance, generally is better than 980 Pro. This model is designed to fit PS5. However, the minor cons are: (1) its thermal compound used inside the heatsink is not well applied (basically, thermal compound is used, but not well placed at all and (2) the software side isn't that polished (not an issue for PS5, but for PC, certainly not in the same level as WD or Samsung).

It comes to how much you want a Phison E18 based SSD.

  • I see a lot of these are coming with heatsink. Is/should you/ is it bad to remove the heatsink. If I want to put this as a second drive in a metabox 15inch laptop is the heatsink going to cause a fit problem.

    • At least Corsair don't seem to void warranty when removing the heatsink, but of course take care when doing it

It'll run warmer without the heatsink, but they throttle in case of overheating - you'll likely need to push it fairly hard to get there though.

Believe Metabox use Samsung drives, but double check it is an 2280 format to make sure it's compatible.
Also it might be a good idea to check directly (raise a support ticket) if the laptop is compatible with this model of SSD, ie with heatsink. It won't be probably, but doesn't hurt to confirm.

      Good luck.

    • btw, check the laptop has a Gen4 SSD interface - if not, better look for a Gen3 drive as it'll likely be cheaper

      • Ok thanks
