Nice summary of the changes, pretty underwhelming event overall although I don't think anyone was expecting much.

I'm still undecided. My Z Fold 2 is still chugging along nicely, and I might even hold on to it for another year instead of upgrading, which is incredibly rare for me, since I've been a new-phone-every-year kinda guy since… well, basically since I started being able to buy my own mobile phones roughly fifteen years ago. I think I'll see if the new iPhone has USB-C, and if it does I may make the jump at least for a year or two, and if they don't I'll continue to laugh at Apple's hubris and keep my Z Fold 2 until at least the S23 or something else catches my eye.

      • My f2 went for a swim and inner screen no longer works, luckily have accidental damage insurance so can swap for a f4 which I was planning on getting anyway

        • +1

People choose weird hills to die on.

I’d be lucky if I plug my iPhone in once a week thanks to wireless charging, wireless CarPlay and MagSafe. Couldn’t give a toss about the port on the bottom.

          • +11

@Mitch889: USB-C has heaps of benefits over lightning. Mainly faster charger and faster transfer rates. The disadvantage for apple is they won't be able to charge extra dollars for cables and charging bricks.

            • +3

@Caped Baldy: The advantage for the planet is less waste. Apple is moving to USB-C in Europe as they are being forced to for this very reason (well documented), so it would be highly likely all their devices from next year will have USB-C (in all markets)

            • @Caped Baldy: USB-C isn't inherently faster, and there is no certainty that a switch to USB-C will include faster charge rates.

Again, Apple chose to limit Lightning on the iPhone to USB 2.0 speeds, the iPad Pro was available briefly with a USB 3.0 Lightning port.

You've never needed to buy genuine Apple charging cables or brick, plenty of quality third-party options.

I wouldn't mind if Apple finally killed off Lightning, but for data, charging and audio I moved on years ago, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

            • @Caped Baldy: Not if you were using an iphone before and not if you use wireless charging mostly anyway. It also helps that the phone lasts a day easily. You can exhaust the battery even if you tried hard.

          • @Mitch889: How's your battery health? How long have you had your iPhone?

        • And how long does it take to transfer a minute (6GB) of Apple pro res video from an iPhone using the lightning port vs what it would take over usb C?
In addition when travelling, it's great to have 1 cable (usb C) for everything….headphones, laptop, power banks etc

          Btw,I have an iPhone

          • -1

            @OzzyOzbourne:

And how long does it take to transfer a minute (6GB) of Apple pro res video from an iPhone using the lightning port vs what it would take over usb C?

You tell us about this insanely niche use-case scenario, please?

I haven't plugged my iPhone into a PC for data transfer … ever. I've had an iPhone since 2016 (OG iPhone SE and now iPhone 12 mini)

This argument is so bad - the amount of people transferring data via cable would be freaking miniscule.

            • @ThithLord: You're right, but the problem is that they advertise their phones as if they are professional-grade cameras. It's quite silly to have such slow transfer speeds in that case.

Someone needs to see a therapist…

      • +2

Same here, my Fold 2 still going strong since released, no issue what so ever. Fold 4 to me still not worth the upgrade. I'll wait for Fold 5.

        • Agreed, happy to keep my Z Fold 2 for another year, think this is the first time I have stuck with a phone for more that 18 months/2 years.

    • +6

Can you elaborate more on why?

        • +2

Well, this new one has a "45% stronger ultra-thin glass screen".

        • +7

          iphone 14 fold confirmed?

        • +2

I've read things like how they want extra when fixing things under warranty. Clearly, Samsung isn't too particular in supporting their foldable lines.

        • +12

          Dont really agree
Cant comment on nosrads experience but i can on mine
I have had Fold 3 since launch and it definitely the best phone experience I have had and am really happy the quality and durability of it
Generally i am one who looks after my phones very well if you see my old phones you would think they are straight out of the box, and i am usually putting others to shame for being soo negligent with their phones
My experience with Fold3 has been quite different
This time around i have been the negligent one
I have dropped this soo many time i have lost count
First drop was less than 24hrs after opening lol
Also didnt have the best phone golder in my car so had this pop out of the holder multiple times while driving
Drops have been from different heights and phone has landed differently, sometimes phone screen is closed and it has landed on the back, on the front screen, on sides, on hinge
Sometimes on inner screen is open and it has landed on the inner screen itself
Last 4 or 5 months been using with no case and many of the drops happened in this state
This thing can take a belting
It has dropped on different surfaces mainly tiles and a couple time from pocket straight to concrete
Only damage this thing has gotten is a couple small dings with the nlack paint coming off the and also slight crack in top right glass of outer screen (doesnt appear on where pixels are displayed)
This has been the most mistrested phone i have owned especially considering how well i look after my other phones
But it has held up really well
The only build quality issue i have had and its not so much the phone but the screen protector for the inside screen
It started with a couple of air bubbles on near the top of the hinge
Then about 4 months in it started to increase bit by bit
I would just push the air out with my fingers but when the bubble started to go from top to almost halfway down and biut 1cm wide i just removed it completely
Had no issues using with no screen protector
I was considering of getting a replacement under samsung care+ but considering the 4 is almost out i might upgrade to that especially for 1tb
I have a lot of used storage on mine and sought of use the phone like a external hdd
And miss having 1tb phone since my galaxy 10+
As for samsung warranty have had to deal with them a couple times (not for this phone) and yeah its not the best experience but not the worst either
Issue with them i found is more of process they follow isnt very consumer friendly, but getting issue sorted was ok i guess
Last issue i had to deal with them for a watch was flawless so getting better i guess
But definitely worth getting the phone
I guess i will have fold3 for sale soon lol

Sorry for the essay of a comment but thought it wld help others

Now need to get samsung to give me fold4 for good review 😆 🤣 😂

          • @ZR6: Nothing like a good phone golder :)

        • +1

Interesting. I have both Samsung and Apple devices and I’d say Samsungs warranty is generally easier to deal with and faster.

          • +1

@ExtraSalt: It’s all down to personal experience, I had to fight Samsung to get my watch repaired, while my wife’s iPhone was repaired in 20 mins of walking on an Apple Store.

        • -1

You just walk in to a Samsung service provider and hand it to them?
You don't deal with Samsung support at all so not sure how customer service was impossible?

        • I don't get why @nosrad is being negged for sharing a review based on personal experience. I have seen some other people also complain about these folding phones. I have also personally dealt with Samsung support for my last TV. Horrendous to deal with them.

          • +1

@bigbadboogieman: because personal anecdotal experiences are not reviews

            • breaking the phone yourself
            • criticising warranty as a overall argument against the hardware
            • this also has the fallacy of assuming every fold phone owner will need to go through warranty process 100% of the time When we know from decade+ of data that its always a statistical exception no matter what product.
When phones start blowing up at above statistical rates, then its a valid review point.

but a no context phone break, indirectly blaming the manufacturer is not valid

            • no real comments about the product features or daily use itself

so the whole thing is an irrelevant whine because samsung didnt bend over backwards when they carelessly broke their phone

            • +1

@furythree: His Samsung support point is quite valid. They are horrendous to deal with. They tried to tell me that a faulty screen on a brand new 82" TV is not a major issue and therefore would not be replaced. Even JB Hi-fi sided with me and replaced the TV. But to each their own. I respectfully disagree with the bend over backwards comment. Samsung support blatantly disregards the Australian Consumer Law.

              • @bigbadboogieman: this is all assuming high statistical probability of needing samsung support to begin with

if we're going off anecdotal statistics

ive owner over 20 samsung devices plus appliances too

                never failed or needed warranty

but even i know its statistically different for others who may not be so lucky

so whilst warranty is valid, the context of his entire comment focusing on a singular aspect to shit on a product that hasnt launched yet is invalid

                • @furythree: Experience with warranty is quite often commented on in posts on Ozbargain. Just because you don't appear to attach any value to it doesn't mean others don't. I too have had horrendous experience in dealing with Samsung on warranty issues. I've also had over 20 Samsung devices/appliances - and my experience with Samsung customer service (woeful system/service for tech company) on an 85" TV (screen replaced 3 times - all with equally faulty screens) is enough for me to think twice about whether to buy another Samsung device/appliance again. YMMV and you're entitled to your opinion, but so are others.

      • +19

been using the fold 3 for a year

        10/10 would buy fold 4

i mistreat it like crazy. so far the only thing that happenned is the front screen protector came off…exactly the day the fold 4 came out

        coincidence? i think not!

Nothing beats the giant display or multitasking and if the trailer is anything to go by they have optimised the viewing experience for various apps even more

if the only complaint is anecdotal breakage of screen with no context, sounds like a great phone to me

screens and hinges dont just self destruct

        • +3

Yes me to 10/10 would buy fold 4 for $2000

        • +5

Been using a Z Fold 2 for basically 2 years at this point. Wouldn't not hesitate to recommend whatever is the current Fold model. Mine has been nothing but a delight to use, with the only real issues I've had being what are natural drawbacks of the entire concept of folding phones (bad case selection, lack of overall toughness, not being able to use accessories more designed for slab phones, etc.)

If you go in expecting a folding phone, it's great. If you go in expecting a regular phone, you're gonna be shocked, either positively or negatively depending on your perspective. These are not for everyone, and I feel like that's okay. Not every device has to appeal to all the people all the time.

      • I have owned all 3x Galaxy Fold models, and I have had zero durability issues with them. In fact, they have been more durable than my other phones (case in point: currently using a shattered iPhone X).

    • +7

Been using the Fold 3 for a year. I would get it again, it's completely worth it to me. But as with most things, not everything will suit everyone. If it suits your usage, there is really nothing else like it. If it doesn't suit your usage it doesn't mean the product is bad, it just means you use phones differently to others.

    • Had my Fold 3 for a year… perfect in every way, never had a problem.

Same goes for my 3 colleagues who also have the Fold 3 since launch and never a problem encountered for anyone of them.

  • +6

The most important change for me this year is the Fold4 cameras are now the same as the S22 series (non Ultra). Last two years the Fold cameras have been around the S10 level quality.

  • +3

Time to upgrade! Main shortfall with the fold 3 is the camera so good to see an improvement. Wish it was Ultra quality

  • +13

Not sure what is worse….263 grams, or $2,000? lol

    • -2

If all they can do in 12 months is shave off 8 grams, then I'm disappointed and will stay with S21, I can't deal with that weight unless it was $1200, then I would give it a go.

Not much work on the feel of the crease either.

I think I prefer the design Huawei (I think) folder which has no external screen and is lighter.

      • +3

If all they can do in 12 months is shave off 8 grams

There's a list of changes in the main post above.

Not much work on the feel of the crease either.

Having used one for a year, it's a complete non-issue for me. Of course if I had to choose between crease or no crease I'd go for no crease, but in daily use it's absolutely not an issue. It's something to complain about in youtube videos but when you actually use it, it's really not a bother.

I think I prefer the design Huawei (I think) folder which has no external screen and is lighter.

I'd personally never buy a folding phone with that design. The wraparound design means you can't put your phone down on a hard surface and not scratch the screen. Any dirt or small particles in your pocket can also scratch the screen when you insert or remove the phone.

      • The Galaxy Z Fold 4 weighs in at 263 grams, which makes it 8 grams lighter than the Z Fold 3. This is a small reduction but feels more substantial in the hand and is made possible by the slimmer hinge and subtle tweaks to the weight balance throughout the phone.

        https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-4-hands…

      • so if ur not impressed by an incremental update. Why not get the fold 3

otherwise sounds like you have a problem with foldables to begin with and are finding nitpick reasons, not that they didnt do enough for the fold 4

the note and fold are arguably completely different products

  • Is there a trade-in bonus like the regular store?

    • $200

      • +1

        Thanks

        • +1

which is less than the $500 being offered from the regular store for some reason?

          • +3

@houmousy: Well, it's already $500 off RRP in the education store. Regular store is $1999 (256/512GB models) after including the $500 trade-in bonus. So if you are trading in the education store that'll make it $1799 + trade-in value.

            • +1

@infpt: its not great though is it? the value of a z fold 3 is only $600 to them apparently so would be $800 with bonus which is terrible for a device i spent $2k on 12 months ago. Was thinking of a workaround though, trade in old watch 4 for $160 plus 200 bonus and sell z fold 3 on ebay for $1200 = $1560, buy Z fold 4 for $2k and watch on ebay for $250, net cost about $700. A lot of hoops to jump through though

              • +1

                @houmousy:

the value of a z fold 3 is only $600 to them apparently

It's like trading your car in at a dealer. They give you a low price in exchange for the convenience of not having to deal with private buyers on the second hand market, where you can get more.

      • I have a Pixel 6 Pro 512GB with a minor crack in the back glass and Samsung is offering me $50. Is this normal?

    • +2

Depending on what you're trading, you might be better off going to JB Hi-Fi. They are doing a 600 bonus credit on top of the trade-in credit on the Fold 4, and 400 bonus on the Flip 4. So if you have a reasonably high-end phone you could be looking at around 1000 dollars off the 2499 price (for the 512gb preorder).

      • +1

Appreciate the heads up. But I have an old Galaxy S8 in good cosmetic condition (although the battery and performance has seen better days) which Samsung, the only store to still accept it for trade-in. It's $5 + $200 bonus, so I'm pretty happy with it. Also the $50 off newsletter sign up which I don't see anyone mentioning in the post. I can confirm it worked for me just now.

        • +1

I guess. Personally I'm not really a trade-in guy anyway, I tend to pass on my phones gratis to friends or family who want to upgrade but don't care about the latest and greatest. Kind of a pay-it-forward thing.

  • I cant see it on the EPP store its usually cheaper than education with bonuses

    • 1999, then $200 trade in bonus

    • Also worth waiting for people to list their 50% off vouchers in the classifieds

  • +1

"A tiny bit wider - 25.5:10 vs the Fold 3's 24:10 on the front"

I don't think that's right, a 25.5:10 display would be even taller and narrower than a 24:10 one.

    • It's a fold. It has a landscape orientation inner display.
      And it's 23.1:9

      • And it's 23.1:9

25.5:10 and 23.1:9 are virtually equivalent. I misread the Fold 3's ratio though, it's 25:9.

        25.5/10 = 2.55
        23.1/9 = 2.56

  • +1

Waiting to see the reviews on battery life

  • Why is the 256 and 512GB the same price?

    • Samsung "exclusive" bonus

      • +1

Nah, not exclusive. JB Hi-Fi is advertising the same thing. It's just a preorder bonus.

    • It's the preorder bonus. Free storage upgrade, so 512GB for the cost of 256GB, and 1TB for the cost of 512GB

  • +1

Going to wait for 6 months for better discounts or alternatives before trading in fold 2.

    • +4

Should be by Nov to early Dec like last year

  • -5

Why will they even bother with such underwhelming increments.

    • +10

Have you not been following any phone from any manufacturer over the past ~5 years? :)

    • +1

Xiaomi, Huawei, Vivo and Oppo are dead to the west. No competition, no pressure and no reason to come out with major improvements

      • +5

        apple must be giddy.

Lock everyone into their ecosystem (done already).
Not innovate until basically they have to (just tell the fanboys apples not happy yet with foldables)
Increase profits while reducing R&D expenditure.

        • +1

No need to go full fanboy champ.

        • If samDung or any other company had the capability of building products that could lock people to their ecosystems, they would have done that already.

          • -1

@dealsucker: I think samsung is a manufacturing company and outsources the rest.

      • +1

        Additionally:

        • LG closed their mobile division
        • Sony no longer sells phones in the Australian market
  • To note another change: Added graphite and heatpipes from the s22+ reducing thermals by 1 degree.

  • Samsung Trade-Up iOS is not available to download….

    • I thought there is something wrong with my device 🤔

      • +1

The company Asurion APAC Mobile is the app owner, and apparently, they forked up…

  • +1

    whats the battery life reeeeee

    • Hard to say, but the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 has proven itself to be pretty excellent on the power efficiency side, based on the phones released with it so far, so I'd imagine you're gonna have an all-day battery at the very least.

  • +1

I thought the jump from Fold 2 to Fold 3 was pretty minor too… the question is whether I should finally upgrade my Fold 2 which is still serving me well. Can't believe I paid $2.5k for it in hindsight, and then $700 in Care+ to get a replacement recently. Maybe I'll wait for Fold 5 as it still doesn't feel substantial enough to change.

    • I've got a Fold 2 and I'm also in two minds. On one hand the camera upgrade is a big bonus, on the other my Fold 2 is working just fine and frankly it still doesn't feel like enough of an upgrade to pull the trigger.

I suppose in a way it's a good thing, the Fold 3/4 haven't "excited" me or made me feel like an upgrade is a necessity, which tells me that the design is mature enough that the category of folding phones is past the "prototype/novelty" stage and settling down to be a serious player in the the overall smartphone market. Certainly my Fold 2 feels pretty matured and refined to the point I am never having to suffer through any quirkyness that one usually expects from a new form factor device.

On the other other hand, I've been an up-grade-every-year guy for most of my life, and I'm starting to get that itchy feeling like I want a new device, and a lack of any new devices that excite me to the point of jumping on them is weirdly frustrating.

      • What do you guys feel that's lacking with the fold 2/3 cameras? What are the media normally viewed/used for?

Asking because I've recently got a pixel 1 to upload 800GB+ of data in original quality for free. These are from 5 generations of phones up to an S21 ultra and even a full frame slr to boot. During my month long uploading, I even question the need for the absolute highest res images. Socials butcher image quality, google photos don't show original quality either (only when you download them). Unless we're viewing these on massive 4k tv's or making massive prints, does it really matter?

        • Camera quality has definitely improved in the last few generations. The Z Fold 2's cameras are okay, pretty decent. But "pretty decent" pretty much describes most cameras from every phone in the mid-to-high range, and a triple cam of a Wide, Super Wide and 2x telephoto has been the standard in most phones for several years now. The thing the Z Fold 2 is definitely lacking the most is a higher res with either pixel binning or simply just the ability to have lossless zoom, and decent quality at anything past 2x

Having a higher resolution is really important if you want to capture a lot of detail and zoom in, for example if you want to crop the image. If you crop out 4/5ths of a 50mpx image, you've still got a 10mpx image. Do the same to a 12mpx image and it's gonna look like crap on any screen higher res than 720p, and is effectively unprintable.

          • -2

@TheRealCJ: Even compared to my iPhone 12 (the other phone I carry daily), the Samsung photos are usually lacking in some way relative whether it be colour accuracy (some people might prefer the Samsung photos though), the speed of recording/taking photos (I don't know why but it feels like it lags to both open camera and to actually capture something) and night mode inferiority. The iPhone 12 (non Pro) isn't perfect either as it has no zoom, but 2x optical zoom isn't that big a deal. Camera upgrade wise, that would probably be the main reason I'd upgrade to Fold 4 from my Fold 2, but I find that I haven't "outgrown" the Fold 2 for my use case whether it be watching videos, opening spreadsheets, multitasking with Youtube and a web browser, etc… and it doesn't feel slow to me yet. The only other features I can think of which was on Fold 3 is multiple eSim support but not a huge deal, and maybe the waterproofing might be useful but it's not as robust as say a normal candy bar phone so if I have to choose which phone I'd use in the rain, it would still be my iPhone. S Pen doesn't matter much to me as everytime I've bought a device with a stylus, I rarely use it… even my iPad Pro 11" stylus is only used to sign documents and occasionally mark things up (but I do appreciate how well integrated it is with say Mac OS allowing me to sign things on iPad as if it was a Mac accessory).

So feels like this year I'll probably just upgrade to iPhone 14 Pro Max or whatever the fanciest Apple iPhone is… which in some ways is less about how marginal the upgrades from Fold 2 to 3 to 4 are, and more testament to how good the Fold 2 was.

        • It's not only about resolution but image processing, dynamic range and things like pixel binning. Also sensor size

          • @0 0 0: I thought pixel beginning was pretty much standard nowadays. I don't see much phones other than xiaomi really pushing for a bigger sensor, even then they're all made by Sony so basically it all comes down to mfg's processing and color science.

I guess my question was, do we need to have absolute best bokeh, hdr or sharpness when the final product is just gonna be murdered by filters on socials.

So what is everyone's use case when it comes to cameras on phones? Do you actually use raw to get the most of a photo?
