How does the pixel 6P compare to the iPhone 13, given they are the same price?

    • +7

Depends if you want android or ios =P

    • +3

The biggie will be camera - P6P has 2x and 4x optical zoom with OIS. And low light performance has always been a Pixel strength.

      • -1

But Pixel 6 is riddled with issues. Yes it has better still camera compared to iPhone but not better video. At same price as an iPhone, I wont even look at Pixel.

          • +1

@Drpepper666: Reddit, my personal experience disagrees. It was the buggiest phone I ever used and the fingerprint scanner was a clusterduck

          • @Drpepper666: Lol, I love pixels and android but my p6 pro may have finally pushed me to buy an iphone 14 when they come out. So man issues and loads of people with the same ones, even websites are reporting on them and taking pols for things like connectivity issues etc

            • +1

@quikstix: I really wanted to love my Pixel 6 but the network and fingerprint issues were just too much for me and I moved to the Samsung s22+

              • +1

@AtlasMeow: A good "fix" for the network hunting issues when you move off wifi etc is to disable 5g. Since doing this I pickup mobile network far quicker and get loads less of those hunting for signal black spots. Unfortunately signal strength is just terrible, the wife's s22 and her old pixel 4 had way superior signal (on same Telstra plan) strength. If I wanted to look up stuff randomly whilst in a large shop or shopping centre would have to look using her phone. It's not an issue with the device as the connectivity is regarded as an issue with them due to poor parts etc

            • @quikstix: That's nothing new.
This used to be common with the Nexus devices, and then the Pixels got the same treatment. There's just too many updates but they're not cooked too well. And sometimes an update fixes something only for a future update to break it again. Solution could be Custom ROMs, but that sort of defeats the purpose of buying a Pixel in the first place. The Pixels are a very USA-first device, and I don't generally recommend them.

              • @Kangal: Loved my nexus 5 then went away until pixel 2, then back for the 4xl and back now for the 6pro. I feel like we going backwards sigh

                • +2

@quikstix: The nexus 5 was one of my favorites phones ever. Also enjoyed my OG pixel xl, but in all cases the updates were pushed out too early and the phones were treated kind of like open beta testers for android. Looking at the P6/P6P, some of the reported bugs are just too much for me to stomach. Namely the fingerprint scanner and 5g handling.
Edit: I really want to go back to a pixel device because I just don't like the Samsung UI but at the moment there's just no decent options.

                  • +1

@DeToxin: Best thing i did was disable 5g on mine, hasnt solved the overall weak signal issues (its a hw issue) but has atleast solved most of the hunting. Mine is about to go in the drawer to join my other decommissioned phones and weirdly enough im buying a 14 pro if it comes out the way it seems it will.

                    • @quikstix: I've read that workaround but considering how poor Vodafone's coverage is already I certainly wouldn't want any weaker signal than I already have. These days I'm less concerned about flagship specs and more about QOL inclusions and support cycle.
For me: # of major OS updates and security patches, camera quality, general UI performance, wireless charging, network & wifi strength, on-call audio quality. I must be getting old.

                      • +1

@DeToxin: Same here on those but camera is the top of the list for me (i have very decent normal camera equipment but this is more for family and dogs etc when I'm trying to take moments) hence the leaning towards the iPhone 14 pro

                      • @DeToxin: Samsung has better OS support than Google for it's higher end lines.

        • +1

Agree mine is awful have stopped using

          • @Draco: I had my pixel 2xl for 3 years and that has been the longest I have held onto the phone. Was having such high hopes for the P6 but it was just a dud.

People keep saying all sorted now but how long has it taken? I sold my phone in Jan and I am sure many other people have been in the same boat and have been soured by their experience with Google

            • @AtlasMeow: I'm lucky enough to have a a Pixel 5 IMO the best I have used my only gripe was the awful ultrasonic earpiece. I don't think they have resolved the issues I actually think they don't know how to fix the Samsung modem issues and the drain is just insane when in use hopefully it taught them a lesson but I don't think it did.

        • It's not 'riddled with issues' but it does have a few. The fingerprint scanner sometimes doesn't work properly as does auto-dimming, but apart from that it's a great phone.

          • @R4: Agreed. And as there is no real valid need for 5G, most of the complaints are resolved by switching to 4G.

            • @ghoulie1: I've had no problems with 5G though.

I didn't even know it was a problem.

            • @ghoulie1: Excellent apologising there for Google’s failures.

          • @R4: Sometimes? The fingerprint just doesn't work in bright sunlight, even inside its too slow, forget using it while its in a cradle in the car, it heats up doing normal everyday tasks, there were bluetooth connection issues, 5g connection issues to this day. And customer service is an issue and the turnaround times are huge unlike Apple or Samsung where you could go to a physical store and get stuff sorted. Its not a cheap phone either.

Yes the still's camera is fantastic but even then the "ultra wide" is too narrow and the rest of the phone is pure garbage.

P.S. I forgot to add, the dictation feature is genuinely awesome. No phone comes close.

            • -1

              @dealsucker: My experience:
Fingerprint scanner sometimes doesn't work - which can be a pain
              I haven't noticed overheating
              I've had no BT issues
              I've had no 5G issues
I've never had to deal with customer service so cannot comment but I'll take your word for it

I find autodimming/brightness to sometimes be a problem

I think the camera is awesome - if "ultra wide" is too narrow then, again, I'll take your word for it. It's not an issue for me

I think it's a great phone. My Pixel 2XL and 3 XL were good but the 6 Pro is better. I'll be keeping it for another year or two. Pixel 8 will probably be where I upgrade

              • @R4: You dont have to take my word. There are other people with the same experiences. You can check yourself check that ultra wide isnt as wide as other phones arounf. Infact the difference between normal wide lens and ultra wide isnt huge.

                • -1

                  @dealsucker: Cool.

                  Not an issue for me.

I think the P6P is a great phone.

                  • +1

@R4: Well this is coming from someone who was alternating between an iPhone and Nexus phone until 2015 when Apple absolutely hit it out of the park with the iPhone 6S and someone who hates samsung's approach of throwing everything at the wall in hope that something sticks. I wanted to like Pixel and yet had to go back to considering samsung because its just so bad.

                    • +2

                      @dealsucker: Cool.

                      I hate iphones and IOS.

I think the P6P is a great phone.

        • Not flat sceen - I won't buy it.

      • And the pixel over processes everything, my find x3 pro that I moved from is light years ahead of my pixel 6 pro unfortunately with camera. Using raw mode produces great images so the software is the issue.

If you take pictures of scenic views etc pixel will be great but if it's people or animals then nope

    • +4

How does the pixel 6P compare to the iPhone 13

The Pixel 6 is a bit of lemon IMO, I'd wait to see if the 7 is any better.

  • +1

Note PIXEL 6P Telstra is only listing 128gb

  • +7

Beware of Pixel 6 Pro on Telstra. I have just been through 2 and both had constant 5G connectivity issues. Only when I was travelling in a car or on public transport - my theory was moving between towers, I'd lose connection and it wouldn't come back until I restarted the phone (I would get an exclamation mark near the signal bars). It was fine on 4G though. In the end JB Hifi looked after me and I swapped to a Samsung S22 Ultra - and I have not looked back. I used to love Pixel phones, but they are falling behind. My S22 Ultra has the August 2022 security patch before the Pixel 6 Pro. While I was there trouble shooting, the sales manager at JB received an update from the Google sales rep who said Google were acknoloedging the problem.

    • +2

I'm curious about your complaint/escalation process. Did you go direct to JB? Did you go to Google? I occasionally get the network drop problem, and I am debating what I would like to do about it. I've only had the phone for less than 2 months and other than the occasional drop, I have no other problems that seem to be common for some…

      • +3

I called them (JB) within a week of noticing the issue. I was just persistent and also I guess managed to get the right staff at the right time when I went in the first time. When I went in the second time there were different staff on and they were not as helpful, but I just persisted. They did attempt to make me go through a trouble shooting process with Telstra….but I I'm sure you know how helpful and frustrating that was. JB handled everything for me in the end, and I cannot be greatful enough for the service of the staff at JB Capalaba.

    • +1

I have this exact issue since upgrading a month ago. I feel the handover between towers cuts my reception until i turn flight mode off and on.
Shame about this outcome… I will pursue with Telstra for now as i don't want to swap back :(

  • Just be careful with the charging ports, it's ALWAYS been an issue

    • Hmmm….yeah my pixel 5 is a little tempremental. I've tried cleaning it with a toothpick/non-metal pick. but it needs to be firmly pushed to connect, and android auto disconnects on the slightest speed around a round about or a speed bump.

Do you think it's corroded or hardware? Or does it need a pro clean from a shop?

      • From my experience (working in and around telco's) it's beyond a cleaning issue (because neither samsung or apple as an example had the frequency of the issue) it's hardware and google haven't fixed it for years now. Hard to say exactly what the problem is but it's unfortunately a very common issue.

  • +10

To balance out the Pixel bashing, I've had mine for months now and have been problem free.

    • Most network issues revolve around 5G, if you are on a 5G service than buyer beware! Like a fair chunk of Ozbargainer's, I'm a tightarse and hop around on MVNO's which are all predominantly 4G so I've dodged the potential network issues.

    • Fingerprint is perfectly fine for me (I use a TPU film screen protector). Vast majority of users report substantial improvements over the successive updates that Google has pushed.

    • Full disclosure, Android 12 started off as a dog's breakfast and its taken months to achieve stability (its fine now). Crap job on google's part, also shot themselves in the foot by launching the Pixel 6 / Tensor / Android 12 at the same time so its hard to disconnect the issues. Android 13 is around the corner and has been universally praised, so here's hoping to a further improved experience.

TLDR: Do your research and go with whatever tickles your fancy, I will say that its getting more and more difficult to sift out legitimate reviews online these days (sponsored creators etc). iPhones are a great solid all-rounder (I also have one) - but they are also susceptible to bugs and hiccups (just less frequent).

    • Good to hear that the problems have cleared up.

I was just dissapointed with the launch of the phone and I don't expect any phone to be problem free but after the Oct/Nov/Dec updates where they promised to fix the reception and fingerprint scanner and it was not resolved, I couldn't hack it anymore.

Hoping for the P7 to be good out of the box and may revisit the pixel series one day…

    • Sorry dont mean to Pixel bash, I was so looking forward to coming back to a Pixel Pro phone, I loved my Pixel 2 and Nexus 6P, but this was a terrible experience for myself. And yes you are right, 4G works fine. The Google rep commented this was only effecting a small batch of phones, so I'm sure there are a lot of lucky ones out there that dont have this issue.

      • +1

No Dramas! to be fair, I call BS on the Google Rep saying its a small batch. I suspect its a fundamental flaw in the Samsung sourced modem (they have a history of being subpar vs Qualcomm) so it would be affecting everyone - but hey, they have to cut corners somewhere to hit that price point!

    • +1

I second this - I've had my P6Pro 512Gb since May and zero issues. I bought it with $300 discount (published on OzB), so, fantastic price!
Fingerprint reader works 10 out of 10 reading attempts with Whitstone Dome glass screen protector AND screen sensitivity at default value (can be increased, but it's not necessary). So, FP is not an issue. I never buy Pixel phones at release because:
      1. They're buggy
      2. Expensive

Normally, 6-8 months after release, all Pixel bugs are squashed and price is a bargain. Highly recommended.

Bonus: phone us dead easy to unlock, root and run custom ROM's if that's what you want.

  • A33 Exynos or A53 or A73 SM7325

  • +1

The A33 vs S21 is there much of a difference performance wise, it's for my mum so even 90hz I'd nice just wondering camera quality wise if it's good enough ?

  • Anybody have access to EPP? How much is A73 now?

    • +1

It’s showing $639.20 on the Education store and receive a bonus $100 with a trade in

      • Do you guys know if you can stack the $50 newsletter coupon with this?

        Thanks

  • Really want my p6p to work as I love the camera and photo app but the mobile network connectivity issue is a huge inconvenience.
My theory is it only happens when you're in a high density area.
No issues when I'm around my quiet suburb but as soon as I'm out of my suburb, it drops out frequently. CBD is the worst

  • +3

I wish I could gave more love to my P6. It was a mess and I was lucky to be able to sell it for a reasonable price.
Now I'm on nothing phone 1 and this is exactly the best of both world: iphone design + stock android

  • +1

    Picked up an A33. Thanks.

  • +4

I have had the A73 for a few months. It's a good phone. I got it at the Government employee price, which this price is $39 cheaper. So get onboard. Has 4 years of updates and 5 years of security updates.

  • +2

    Finally a good A73 deal!
I price beated one at Officeworks (came down to $569.05). My dad finally can upgrade from his A51.

    • Is it only in store Officeworks price beat?

      • I got mine in store.

      • I’m surprised as well. The other deal has people not managing to get a price beat for the iPhone 13 at either OW or JB

    • +1

My local ow wouldn't price match…….

    • Has anyone got officeworks to price match over the phone?

  • Are these phones unlocked?

    • Outright

      • How do I buy this outright, they said I needed to have a telstra plan when I tried to buy it?

      • Sorry for the question, but does "outright" mean it can be used on any network/mobile provider?

        • Yes no lock to network

          • @superforever: Alright, thanks. I am interested in both the A73 & even A33. For this price, I was thinking of getting the A33 for now as I've been looking for a phone for a couple of months now. I could have used the A33 for a while until I found something better on a deal. Having said that, I'm not a Telstra customer and don't really want to try and create an account to get one :(.

What would you guys choose between the A73 and Pixel 6a if the price was the same?

            • @Ice009: 6a a lot smaller I prefer A73

            • @Ice009: Get a73 at officeworks price match price. $569.05 is all time low.

Or there is a rumoured $599 6a sale coming at JB for father's day.

              • @silenthillrocks:

Get a73 at officeworks price match price. $569.05 is all time low.

Or there is a rumoured $599 6a sale coming at JB for father's day.

Yeah, this is what I was going to try and do, but as you mentioned, I remember reading another comment that the 6a is going to be $599 on sale, so that is why I was asking which phone is better for $599.

Is the Pixel 6a the better phone at the same price, or are they very similar?

                • @Ice009: They're probably about equal depends if your a fan of Google or Samsung phones

Main difference is a73 has 120hz refresh, better battery life and bigger screen. Pixel has the slight edge for camera and processor.

                  • @silenthillrocks: Alright, thanks. Never have had a Google phone, so that is why I was asking. I guess both have good points. Have used Samsung before and haven't really had any major issues with my previous Samsung phone/s. I did want a good camera, so that is why I liked the Pixel 6a, but also would like the larger screen of the A73. Doesn't look like I can get the A73 for $599, though, unless another store price matches. I don't want to stuff around signing up for a Telstra ID to get one, either. Does Officeworks price match online at all? I don't have a local store, so I can't go into one and do it that way either.

I am also currently with Boost on a 1 year prepaid plan, so not sure if that qualifies as a Telstra customer. I am guessing not.

                    • +1

@Ice009: Hey mate, looks like Officeworks have dropped the price for the Samsung A73 at $597 :)

Or if you prefer JB or The Good Guys, they have it for $599

                      • @BargainsGrabber: Amazon $598 now

                      • @BargainsGrabber: Thanks a lot. I will have a look tonight when I get home from work as I have to go to work now, so won't have time until late tonight. I guess I will pick this over the Pixel 6a at this price.

I also saw Amazon have it and also Ebay Mobileciti (not sure if this is AU stock?). It looks like I can get it for $566 through MobileCiti on Ebay with Ebay Plus, but not sure if I trust that store as I haven't bought from there before.

  • -2

All of the deals require an existing or new Telstra mobile plan as part of the purchase. As a result other retailers won't match the offer (went to JB hifi and they refused to match it)

    • +1

Can buy outright only needs Telstra login

      • it doesnt because ive made a log in and it still wont work

      • +1

Yes you can buy it outright but you still need an existing or new plan to do so, it says so on the page itself when you click "Read offer details"

    • I didn't find that. I had to verify my identity first which I thought was a bit odd for an outright purchase though.

  • +3

Picked up A73 through price match at ow. Thank you

    • which officeworks?

      • Dandenong south

  • Is it possible to pick these up at a Telstra store?
I'm traveling and delivery is awkward.

    • +1

Yep shouldn't be an issue, but just remember most T-shops are franchises and they really dont want to sell anything outright, as they dont make a cent off outright phone purchases. You can always ask, but if they're low on stock i doubt they'll sell you one. You're honestly gonna have better luck with JB or OW and trying to get them to price match it.

      • Telstra repurchased most of the franchises
