  • So OW sent you a cart link like jb?

    • no, they asked me which methods to pay for and I chose credit card over the phone

Screen diagonals are a poor way to judge screen size with different aspect ratios.

In terms of actual display sizes, the iPad Mini 6 has a display surface area of 203.9cm² compared to the Samsung S22 Ultra which is 114.7cm².

For an even more useful comparison this site provides a visual comparison between the two

      • +2

Definitely looks a tad bigger 😉

        • That's what she said

    • Ouch.

    • +7

      Room temperature IQ take

    • I kinda agree it's a bit small but some people want smaller iPads, shrug. My wife wants one of these.

I know it's pedantic but I feel like it should be 8 or so. Whatever.

EDIT: Wait is the latest model 8.3" That's not so bad

  • Does OW price beat even if they don't have stock?

    • +1

No it doesn't work if the item is out of stock on Amazon

  • +3

I think at this moment, using the 10% off apple gift card to buy from the education store is cheaper with free shiping: $669 * 0.9% = $602.10

    • +1

True. But buying from officework is less hassle and quicker delivery (free). And you can get flybuy points.

      • +1

$602.10 and from Apple directly. While Officeworks return policy is above average, Apple's 14 days no question asked return policy is much easier. Cheaper is still cheaper.

    • +5

      Dude, it’s either 90% or 0.9. 0.9% equals to 0.009.😂

    • Do you have a link for this one? Cheers.

  • +1

they price matched david jones https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/717489

    • Lifesaver. Amazon ran out of stock but DJ still had them. Managed to PB @ OW for OP's listed price.

  • -5

Wow, since when ipad mini in that price..from memory, around 300$ ?

    • +1

Did you time travel from 2012?

    • Since 2013 with the release of ipad mini 2, now we are 6th gen

      • -1

I remember had a mini 2 and sold it for $200 after about 1.5 years of use because Apple released an iOS update deliberately slowed down all the idevices with less than 95% battery health.

        • Every new OS update will slow down devices. It's a fact regardless of Apple or what not. Because the new software will require higher processor, memory, capacity.

          • -1

@itstuan: So you think it is wrong to impose financial penalties for it?

          • @itstuan: Except for that time that they released an update that improved performance on older devices.

        • They slowed down devices that would be susceptible to random shutdowns. Now I think you get to choose whether the device is slowed down to prevent the shutdowns or whether you'd rather risk it and keep it faster

    • Fair question. For a few generations it was the “value” iPad. Then it jumped to being a premium model. Plenty of people strongly prefer this size and are willing to pay more.

  • +2

Great little iPad, in my opinion the only iPad you can comfortable hold for long periods of time.

    • +1

Agree - always had a mini. On a gen 5 now. No reason to upgrade yet.

Also super useful to keep the kid entertained in the car without lugging around a big screen.

Otter box case and it's pretty hard to damage too

  • Is this the latest or second latest model?

  • +1

Decent little iPad. Wanted something light and portable.

At the time this just came out and I had the option for one of these or the older iPad air (previous gen chip), opted for this. (years of service company device gift, so no money spent)

It's fast. It gets reasonably bright. Audio is better than you'd assume. You do get that 'jelly' affect sometimes when scrolling but for a glorified media consumption device it's great.

I use a Pixel 5 as a phone and prefer compact phones so swapping to this to watch some YouTube or series/movies is a nice bump when chilling in bed or when the better half is watching something on TV I'm not interested in :P

  • +1

There’s a manufacturing problem on this generation and that’s jelly scroll an issue in portrait mode, I would of at least prefer it to be in landscape mode instead. I returned mine back, waiting for 7th generation!

    • What does this mean?

      • +3

        Easier to watch it:

2021 iPad Mini Jelly Scroll - shot at 60 FPS

It's generally not an issue for most people. But some people don't like it. Warning: once you've seen it, you cannot unsee it. However, Amazon has a good return policy and Apple has 14 day no question asked return policy. If you plan to use it in landscape mode, then it is not an issue.

        • +2

          Talk about 1st world problems…

          • +1

@mlburnian: Just an excuse to force the brain to overwrite the FOMO impulse. It's a good tablet.

    • Just out of interest, did you actually notice the issue or you found Web sites / youTube videos mentioning it, then it became obvious?

Was previously thinking about getting it earlier this year, but after seeing youTube videos, I know it will be something which bugs me if I were to purchase it. The other issue that was mentioned sometimes is some sort of app scaling issue. Not exactly sure / understand that one.

      • Not everyone notice this issue. Personally I have one and have never noticed this. Best thing is to buy through Apple using the current gift card deal and return within 14 days if you don't like it.

    • +1

Not sure I would call it a manufacturing problem - its more of a design problem. The screen on the iPad mini is oriented differently to other iPads, making jelly scrolling noticeable in portrait mode. Other iPads (all screens actually) have Jelly scrolling in landscape, but because of the orientation its MUCH harder to notice.

I have one and I can definitely see the jelly scrolling, but its not a deal breaker for me. I usually use mine in landscape anyway.

I've found it an excellent device for casual video editing using Luma Fusion. The A15 chip is absolutely up to the task.

      • It is not an orientation issue, it is a component (cost) issue. The IPS screen and/or the controller chip is the problem, otherwise Apple would have fixed it in the software. Perhaps Apple ordered too many of those IPS screens, otherwise, I expect Apple to get either a different batch of IPS screens or have the screen maker address the issue to be less noticeable.

        • It is absolutely an orientation issue. LCD screens update line-by-line, so as a user scrolls on the iPad mini, the top of the screen updates before the bottom of the screen (in portrait), which causes the jelly effect. If the orientation was the other way (where left/right update differently), it wouldn't be as noticeable, as with other iPad models.

          • @loksmack: No, that's a nice way to sugarcoat this. The issue is that the jelly scroll is more noticeable on this particular panel. While others also have the same issue, they are not as severe.

Also, if this were a 120Hz refresh screen, it would be very difficult to see it. So, this is a panel refresh lag. There is always one orientation where the scrolling refresh is more prominent. Apple doesn't make that IPS screen. No one has bothered opening it up to disclose the panel maker. My guess is the panel is NOT made by Samsung, Japan Display or LG.

We need to accept Apple does reduce cost on their mid tier and lower tier products. IPS' refresh lag isn't supposed to be that bad is the issue basically. Change the orientation when using iPad Mini is called a workaround (avoiding the problem).

Apple should change the panel provider for iPad Mini in the future OR tell the current panel maker to fix it in the future batches.

            • @netsurfer: Probably sourced from BOE, TianMa, AU Optronics et al.
2nd tier quality suppliers compared to LG, Samsung, Japan display
              Just my guess…

            • @netsurfer: This question isn't facetious, I'm genuinely curious:

Wouldn't this problem exist with a 60hz panel, with this orientation, regardless of manufacturer or display technology?

If the issue is a slower-refresh screen updating line-by-line in an orientation that exacerbates the problem, I would expect this to happen no matter who manufactures the panel. We have had 60hz panels in iPads for years now, but this is the first one to exhibit this issue. I can only put it down to the panel orientation, but maybe I'm missing something?

  • This is a good deal. If I hadn’t already bought the regular iPad during its previous sale, I’d be all over this one.

  • Pm with officeworks via phone. Thx op. Time to return ipad back to Amazon

    • How? Which phone number?

      • +1

        1300office

  • Been eyeing one for a while. Just rang officeworks and ordered on the phone - great price! Quick and easy to do.

  • Tempting .. I still use my iPad mini 4 for watching content etc during lunch breaks. Love the small size but holy cow it's horribly slow now. Might be a good time to upgrade.

    • +1

Definitely upgrade. I did the same from 4 to 6.

    • +1

iPad mini 4 will not be able to get iPadOS 16

The Lenovo Legion Y700 was released this year, so far in China only. It's an 8' Android tablet with decent specs.

  • Thanks OP much appreciated,
was in the market for one ,

Now to sell the old one to afford this .

OW price matched with DJ as the Amazon listing was just too confusing for staff.

    also

Pretty sure $649 was RRP when they first came out 1-2 years ago.
    Getting older so …
    Does anyone else remember this?

thoughts on this vs the m1 ipad air?

    • If you are asking this question, then you don't really need either. Both devices rely on the CPU heavily to entice people to buy.

iPad Mini A15 - The cheapest A15 device you can buy right now with the largest screen. Apple did limit the USB-C to USB-C 3.2 gen 1 (5Gbps), so no 4K/60Hz output.

IPad Air M1 - M1 CPU, same as iPad Pro. Thunderbolt port, but let's face it, you are not going to really use Thunderbolt on this.

      • I say go for the new air, more ram and M1. This one will cripple within couple year when you try to multi-task or multi-tab browser

      • Just went for iPad Air this morning. Better Chipset, RAM, bigger screen, smart connectors, blue colour all for only $170 more!

  • Have a 5th ipad mini. Is it worth to upgrade?

    • Doubt it. Unless you really need USB-C

Thanks Mr Stallman. It’s a shame you’ve been picked on so much these past few years. Free speech is no longer valued in today’s society. Criticism is terminal. Rehabilitation impossible. Did I mention how much I love my iPad mini?

  • Thanks again to op, got the David Jones pricematch at OfficeWorks, happy wife.

    • Happy life.
