  • the good, amex has decent travel insurance when paying over $500 on hotels

The bad, crap foreign exchange rates if booking overseas hotels

    • The bad, crap foreign exchange rates if booking overseas hotels

You need to pre-pay in order to use a discount code with Expedia, which means you will pay now in AUD rather than later in XX currency.

  • That exclusion list is long. So basically it's only available on non-chain hotels?

  • There is a search page… no idea if this automatically exludes or not.

    How to use your Coupon

    • Visit expedia.com.au/amex and select a participating pre-paid hotel.
    • During the booking process, on the payment page you will see the link ”Use a coupon, credit or promotion code” where you can enter the coupon code.
    • Enter the coupon code in the relevant field and then click the “Apply” button. If your booking is eligible, the applicable discount will be subtracted from the price of the hotel reservation before the application of any taxes, applicable fees or additional costs.
    • Use an Eligible Card to pay for your hotel reservation.
    • This offer only applies to the first room in multi-room bookings
  • Also 12% off Selected Hotels When Paying with Mastercard (has been extended to 31/08/2022 and may keep getting extended).

    Expedia.com booking for 4 nights at hotel - $2,041 with 12% off = $1,796

Booking.com booking for same 4 nights at same hotel- $1,627

Both sites have the same owner. These deals are a scam…..

    • It is always worth comparing multiple sites to see where you can get the best price.

Both sites have the same owner.

No they don't. However they are the two dominant industry players operating many subsidiary brands.

Expedia has hotels.com, trivago, orbitz, cheaptickets, travelocity and vrbo among others. Booking.com has agoda, kayak, priceline and momondo among others.

  • I get this prompt, any way around it?
"This coupon offer is only valid after clicking through from the original website or email that provided the code. "

  • Can you use ShopBack when booking with the code?

    • I tried it with the Mastercard one last week and got a $0 tracking email, so would guess no (unless the code is listed on the Shopback Expedia page).

  • Haven't had any success using this coupon code. Either the coupon field doesn't show up or the coupon code isn't accepted. Never worked for me.

    • Are you sure the hotels you’re looking at aren’t on the exclusion list?

      • Can you please share the list?

        • Actually, please don't worry about it, the apartment we wanted to book is excluded anyway. Thank you.

        • Maybe try reading the OP next time?

@kerfuffle: I got their invitation through email, and not only for Amex but also for MasterCard. The problem was the amex link lists out eligible hotels as 'hot deals' but there was no way to perform a search within the list of eligible hotel because every search performed would just return both the eligible and non-eligible ones at the same time. I would otherwise had to keep clicking load more to browse through the entire list, not to mention it seemed to show Brisbane hotels first then Sydney. Obviously I'm after Sydney hotels in my case.

And yet with the MsstetCard link, it never showed which hotels were eligible anyway so that caused a bit of confusion for me as well.
