I've got to say i don't understand chargers that don't have a figure 8 cable. It's so much better with one

    • +6

Why would these wall socket chargers need a figure 8 cable?

      • +10

Another one, may not be obvious, but when you travel to different country you just buy cheap figure 8 cable for that country. Sorted. Even if you don’t get one straight away, the tv or radio or anything in hotel may have one for temporary use.

        • +8

That's exactly what I do, you can buy UK,EU,US figure 8 cables on eBay for under $6 inc delivery So many hotel wall sockets are in hard to get places.
This solves that issue, you've now got the charger sitting on a table instead of behind a bed or in a cupboard. Sometimes when you buy an electronic device it comes with multiple figure 8 cables for different countries, don't throw them out. If you're taking a device overseas with a figure 8 cable you can use the extra one you got with your purchase. Finally, sometimes you want to buy an item online that doesn't come with a foreign plug, if it's an AU figure 8 cable, it's no problem just use your spare AU figure 8 cable or buy one online.

As someone unfamiliar with the pros for a figure 8 cable in this situation, could you explain why?
I think plugged directly into the socket would be cleaner and easier to cable manage for me. But I'm not sure, haven't used these PD chargers before.

How often is the wall socket or powerboard in a useful spot? It's easier to get the charger into a good spot with a figure 8 cable and use three short usb cables than have 3 longer usb cables coming from further away. Having 3 long usb cables coming from a wall socket or powerboard just has no benefits (especially with cable length limits these days) and is ugly cable management

        • +13

I think the biggest plus of this charger is for travel.

The fact that this is 65W means it can charge many laptops- and yet the size is significantly smaller than most provided laptop chargers.

I picked up a refurb Dell from one of the many deals here and it comes with the ol barrel adapter and brick. Getting one of these would seriously cut down what I need to take with me to charge my laptop, phone, tablet, etc.

          • +1

@johnn: Yeah.. But it would be better with a figure 8 cable!

            • +3

              @justtoreply: totally agree.
yes its nice to plug unplug from the top of desk, instead of crunching down to the power point and then hit our head to the table

    • This is why I really liked the design of older apple chargers. They used the figure 8 connector as their interface for the swappable plugs. I haven't seen them for a while - maybe due to the recall they had?

[edit] nope, they still use it on everything except the lower end iPhone charger.

      • Yeah, those bricks are great for travelling too. You just bring along the right click in plug and switch it over.

    • Because ..

Extra heavy weight to carry thick cable

Extra mess from the extra cable

      • +3

        ??

If you mean while traveling then I'd much rather have a figure 8. There's so many circumstances where you don't have a socket in the right spot.

Less mess overall with a figure 8 than multiple longer usb

        • +1

The whole point of this charger is to be compact… the design is why there is a high amount of interest in this specific charger and a figure 8 cable will compromise that as the plug and cord will be just as big (if not bigger) than the charger itself. People that want a figure 8 cable have other options out there.

    • Some chargers will come with different plugs. Slide out one country plug for another. I guess doing something like that will kill a whole industry. People start disappearing when you suggest that little bit of innovation.

You could get a bunnings $2 2m extension lead?

With my apple chargers, I always remove the cable and use the adapter thing. It's so much easier to manage and travel with.

I also hardly never plug directly into the wall and use a powerboard. Even when I travel I pack a powerboard. Especially handy as you only need 1 power convertor/adapter and plug everything into the powerboard as normal.

      • For home use, extension cords are bulky and fugly vs a figure 8
For travel, years ago, I'd totally agree. I took a powerboard too. But these days everything is usb charged so a single figure 8 usb charger is the winner

      • 🙂 spot on.
Do you also have a solution for the current energy shortage in Europe?

    • 100% agree! I thought I was the only one who thunk like that :P

    • Each has pros and cons. I use both types and prefer without figure 8 for portability, under my standing desk, or travel where space is a premium.

Apart from branding, is this charger any different? HEYMIX 65W GaN Charger

We need a teardown to compare. See what the insides are like.

Heymix is a bad juju word here on OzB.

    • +3

      It's a Heymix… That's different enough

      • What's the difference between my Greatwall that died and a Hylux?

        • The Hylux wasn't made by Toyota.

          • +4

@t25: The Hylux was made in Hyrule, by a bunch of fairies that keep saying "Hey! Listen!"

      • Anker have a much better reputation and are frequently recommended for chargers or cables.
      • Anker has had their chargers torn down before so we have an idea of what components are used and quality
      • Much better reviews - While new in Australia, it seems to have been sold in the US for a while - https://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/B09C5RG6KV
      • There are no pictures of scorch marks, stories of overheating/smoke, significant numbers of DOA in reviews across the Anker product range
  • Would it be worth picking up the

    PowerCore+ 26800 PD 45W with USB-C PD Wall Charger

    For $165

It comes with a single USB-C PD Wall Charger

Plus I'm looking for a power bank to charge my M1 MacBook Air..

Any thoughts if that would be the best route for a good quality power bank..

I grabbed one of these Anker wall chargers on sale for $42:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/aw/d/B07N7NQ47G?ref=ppx_pt2_mob…

Lowest price according to 3camels. I need it for my bedside as I just swapped out a chunky alarm clock for an Alexa w. Clock
