GL products have been progressively getting more expensive.

    • +5

They've been getting progressively more powerful and feature packed too though. They also have more budget friendly options as well.

I picked up a Beryl during the last sale and it's fantastic.

      • Return Beryl just few weeks ago, planned to use as proxy STP but much worse performance than my original AirPort Extreme setup.

Have a Mango for many years, not a fast router, not advertised as fast router, and happy with the speed I get from hotel WiFi. Beryl was advertised as fast router but ended up not at all, very disappointed. I’m no longer considering any Gl.inlet product.

        • What are you considering as a replacement?

          • @abadacus: Probably NanoPi. They make much more powerful routers, though not sure about the Wi-Fi performance.

          • @abadacus: Not sure what you mean. We have 2 work area, one with wired connection to internet router, the other in separate room, just want to join the two via WiFi. Still using dual AirPort Extremes, not the best but acceptable. Throw Beryl in with high hope but performance drop by 30-50%, and I didn’t even use Beryl as WiFi node, only proxy STA - WiFi to existing network and everything else connect via Ethernet.

Perhaps mesh router may do a better job but no enough budget. Just a wireless bridge, that’s all.

        • I don't even care that it's slow. That stupid light not having a switch is so annoying. I use it as a WDS bridge for my TV in my bedroom and I had to use electrical tape so that it wouldn't light up my entire room.

          • @Void: You can set the button on the side to turn off the front light.

            • @jemichae: Just through the button setting entry on the admin page? It doesn't seem to exist when used in WDS mode.

      • They've got no competition in the mini/travel sized WiFi 6 space either so you're probably paying a bit of an "exclusitivity tax" for this device as well in the price .

  • SQM cake working on this atm?

    • Sorry, don't know you'll have to ask on the forums.

  • Does this support EAP WiFi like the gl.inet gl-ar750s slate ?
or not many places use EAP WIFI anymore ?

    Please advise. Thanks

    • Because of the chipset it should but you'd be best to post a question in their forums

    • Just confirmed that it does support EAP.

  • does anybody know how to use these to bypass airport / flight login pages and broadcast the wifi signal as a repeater?

    • +2

You're not really bypassing the captive portal but I think I know what you want.

      1. So you power on the travel router.
      2. Connect to travel router from device and then go to config page (Ie 192.168.1.1)
      3. On the travel router config, connect to the public wifi and do the captive portal
      4. Once the travel router is connected you can connect your devices to the travel router and they won't need to do the captive portal
      • +4

Also there are a few times when you just cannot access that captive portal from the router so alternatively:
        1. Log in from your mobile or laptop to the hotel/airport captive portal
        2. Exit and rejoin your travel router WiFi
        3. Navigate to the config page (Eg 192.168.x.1)
        4. Change the MAC address to be the same as the device you used to join the captive portal
        5. Scan the router to join the hotel/airport WiFi and it will work with no issues as you already logged in.

        • Thanks for this tip!

          • @0FoxGiven: The other method usually works but this is my backup method. I usually use a device I don’t usually use outside of the hotel room like my spare iPhone so I don’t have any MAC address problems when I want to log into the hotel WiFi using my normal iPhone from the breakfast lounge for example.
I had to use this method at the Adelaide Sofitel earlier this week.

        • beautiful!

      • Thanks. Tried that but the captive portal portal didn't show up for me when logging into the router admin page

        • +2

Captive portal won't appear on the router. It should appear on the first device you attach to your router and shouldn't appear on additionally attached devices. Try going to http://neverssl.com as your first web site you browse as sometimes this will force the captive portal page.

Limbot, is Slate Plus coming? What will be the rough price?

    • It's coming but don't have an ETA or price yet but I'll ask again.

  • +2

Currently the price dropped to $160.65 and is applying another 15% off at checkout to bring the price to $136.55. Decent discount.

    • Mmm, was never told this was going to happen. Not sure if intended by GL-Inet or not. I'll update the post to reflect while it's active.

  • Isn’t the model the AXT1800, not AX1800?

    • The model is GL-AXT1800 and it's based on AX1800 "technology" :P

  • The power requirement just gets higher and higher. Original Slate was 5V2A, Beryl was 5V3A, and now this one is 5V4A.

Laptops without PD will probably be unable to power it.

Edit: Seems to be so that the router can power attached devices. Still seems quite high though.

    • When they shipped me my Beta unit they didn't have an AU adapter for some reason and have been happily running on a Beryl 5V/3A adapter as a router ( no external storage). The 5V/4A is to leave some overhead for USB connected devices. Have a look at this discussion here

I've run my Slate off my notebooks USB @ 5V/1A before. They spec the power for "maximum" but as long as you're not pushing it hard you don't have to supply max recommended power.

Confiming price is $136.55 at checkout with the additional 15% discount applied automatically.

  • Is there a version same as this but also has 4g ?

    • I have the older model Slate which supports 4G in the form of plugging in a USB dongle/wingle. (or via Ethernet/WiFi even)

Given the progression of Cellular technologies and bands I would probably advise against anything with built-in cellular - use a 4G USB now, upgrade to 5G later, keep the same router. Changing carriers? Not constrained to certain bands if you just swap out the USB.

Am I correct in that these travel routers are WiFi repeaters? I'm looking for a cheap unit for basic internet sharing of hotel WiFi with my family.

Recently, stayed at a Coober Pedy underground apartment where free WiFi was provided but only near the entrance to the apartment. There's no signal (WiFi or mobile data) further into the apartment.

Probably not wanting to get the cheapest one but something with reasonable signal strength. Maybe the cheapest one with an antenna? Any recommendations gratefully accepted.

    • +1

That is correct, that's one of their usages. Personally I have almost one of every model and my go to travel router is still the Slate AR750s even though there's more "advanced" models. I think it's still the best balance of size and function (dual band, external antennae, VPN speed, power consumption ) especially given our "average". NBN speeds.

      • +1

        Cheers for that.

What about the Opal? Just saw it and seems rather appropriate for Coober Pedy.

        • @lomie I don't actually have an Opal so can't comment on the performance/stability. Sorry :(

  • Hmm tempted but seems overkill for my travel needs. Might wait for something with less power draw that can be powered by a USB power bank.

    • Mine does Access Point duty on the second floor of the house :) See my post above re my travel companion (can run off a Powerbank).

  • wow 600 Mbps or 1200 Mbps.. pity most people got 50 Mbps NBN

    • Sure, the theoretical numbers sound overkill, but wireless is a shared medium and subject to interference so you're better placed to get your full NBN50 or 100 if you only need to use 1/12th of your airtime.

  • Got mine yesterday. It's not very stable.

I am trying to use it for WDS and it just craps out after a few minutes and while I can access its clients from within its network, I can't access them from the main router.

I tried stuffing around in Luci and it didn't help, and beta 4.0.1 also doesn't fix the issue.

I did not have this problem with my Beryl, so I will be returning this.

I really like the router outside of the instability, so I hope it gets fixed but it's worthless to me for now.

  • Price has gone back to $189
