      • I'm getting 94~110MB/s for copying large files. You will not get this speed with lots of small files.

        • edit:
I transferred the files from a RAID array which has good read speeds, so there was no bottle neck on the source.

      • If you get low write speed on USB 3.0, it could also be the drive inside is a green drive. Someone opened his up and found out that his one is the green drive (5900rpm). So not all are 7200rpm ones.

        • My 1TB GoFlex was a green drive, Chinese manufactured ST1000DL002 1TB 5900rpm! I tested it via USB3.0 (NEC chipset) & was getting decent speeds ~110-120mbps IIRC.

Hmm, I might test it again now it's outta the case & in the microserver! ;)

    • .

    • what tool are using to run the tests?

      • Crystal Disk Mark. I only ran the Sequential test. The write speed does suprise me… need to do more tests.

    • I got constant 122MB/s read (NECT chipset) until the final 400GB when it gradually slowed down to finish at 79MB/s. Pretty impressive, this has got to be 1TB platters.

For some reason HD Tune does not like it though, keep freezing. I'm hoping it's HD Tune not the HDD.

The link to the product page on the seagate website is for a USB-powered model, however the product on the officeworks site is for a model that comes with an AC adaptor, and the description explicitly mentions it usage. Also the officeworks website doesn't list "usb powered" as a feature - which to me is a pretty big omission, as I'd consider that to be a key feature.

Can anyone shed some light? The model number listed on the officeworks website doesn't appear to exist anywhere else. Or can someone find a link to the real product page on the seagate website?

    • very unlikely at this price you get a USB powered device

      • Agreed, however the product link in the bargain description is to a USB powered model.

    • From what uncoelite linked above:

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71429#comment-892806

It appears to be a HDD with "Power adapter: Output 12V at 1.5A"

    • You get a power supply and it is one of those with a 3.5" drive inside. Not the portable laptop drive type external USB 3.0.

    • That is the real product page. It seems that they included that line accidentally because everything else (title, photos, images, box contents) suggests it's an external hard drive.

  • Can a rep or someone who knows shed some light on this for me; does this come with a worldwide 12 month warranty with seagate? As I will be travelling during july and august in europe.

    • +1

it's a 3 year warranty. Not sure if it's worldwide warranty though

  • Sweet! Now we just need DSE or HN to come in at $97 and we're set!

  • just bought 2, let's hope it doesn't "click" inside my dead quiet Qnap

    • +2

Most seagates 'chirp' when they spool up, its a rather weird sound, but after a while you dont notice it at all.

      • +2

LOL, yeah once I hear the birdie chirp I know here comes the data! :)

  • Anyone know where I can get a good priced self powered 2.5" USB hdd 320g-1tb?

  • Is it possible to get USB 3.0, portable (USB powered) drives that spins at 7200rpm?

    • I would doubt you would get that in a 3.5" model. A 2.5" model, should be able to find soem, but you might need to use two USB ports on some machines.

    • you could try putting an internal 2.5" in a USB3 enclosure.

  • Nice deal! Ordered mine Thursday night received it Friday after noon.

  • I tried for a price match at Dick Smith and sure enough they were dicks. Told me their "cost price" was $120 so couldn't do it. Looks like they are now creating excuses to not price match because there is no way a product they are selling for $139 has a cost price of $120.

    OW got the sale.

    • Cost price isn't how much they get the stuff from the supplier, but also includes labour costs and shelf space etc. It is the their total cost. Looks like OW are running a more efficient business.

  • For those who experience 'the chirp' with these drives, consider updating the firmware. Most of these drives are made up of 2 x 1gb platters and some do make a noise.
This issue has been discussed on the Seagate forum and is attributed to the Advanced Power Management features of the drive. See this thread:
    http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda-XT-Barracuda-Barracud…

Seagate have just brought out a firmware update to correct the issue. See here:

    Happy 2tb-ing !!

      What a tool!…

Bet you didn't try it yourself…

A bit more googling reveals that it work work on the CC9X firmware drives.. only the CC4x drives (internal)…

Probably a reason.. not to buy these over the internal units..

It don't work on the external drives.. even if you mount them internally…

the firmware is different and the firmware updater check for the firmware before updating..

Just wasting 5 hours of time trying to do so…

      • +1

Relax buddy he was just trying to post a solution. And if you did a bit of "googling" why did you waste 5 hours trying.

        • did it afterwards.. to work out WTF was going wrong..

It was also on this basis, I bought four of these drives… (and the first one was faulty so had to return that

The click is bloody annoying… (drive sounds likes its going to dies.. and sometimes. it does lock up completely - have had one for around 7 months from the last offer) since it was "solved" why not get a few more..

Posting misinformation… leads to other ozbargainers wasting time and money…

I still have a $200 netbook,… Asus 900AX I've never used.. because of a fool.. who said the ram was upgradable..

Next time I won't post.. and let other ozbargainers go through the same pain… and wasted time..

I'd venture that it wasn't the fact that you posted the comment that made you look bad here, I'd be confident in saying that leading with a charming line like:

          What a tool!…

…didn't win you any friends. Just FYI.

Posting misinformation… leads to other ozbargainers wasting time and money…

          Internet is full of misinformation.

  • Did anyone elses come with conversion things for the AC power? I have no idea how to put them onto the existing US one!

UPDATE: didn't realise you could take out the us one !

    • Took me about 5 minutes to work it out as well…

Looks like the Aussie adaptor fits over the US one.. until.. you try it…

      • yep, I saw the tab to push it out but i had no idea to do it

  • Does anyone kow how to improve speeds on a usb 2.0 computer? I'm only getting 15mbps :(

    • Get a PCIe USB3.0 card, best ~$11 you'll invest! :)

      • But then you loose a precious PCI-E slot, home to my GPU!

  • I'm having some troubles. I just spent the last two hours farting around. Just wondering if someone can point me in the right direction.

I bought this hard drive from OW. I plugged it into the Modem/router via USB. I want to access it to save files to, stream files from etc. How do I find it/access it from my wireless devices (Mac, PC, PS3)? I am already accessing the modem/router wirelessly to connect to the internet. How do I connect to my new Segate eternal HD which is connected to my Netgear mode/router????? … arghhhhh … thankyou!!!

  • :/
got mine on Friday, copied all my stuff to it, after which it became inaccessible. Plugged it into 3 different computers, but it was not detected properly (the explorer process would freeze). Wasn't about to take it back to OW with all my stuff being on the drive, so I took it out of the enclosure and am using it as internal drive now.
Some feedback: Seems these enclosures are cheap and nasty, and have a history of overheating. Was great while it lasted, which was 1 day.

Most probably know anyway, but the drive model inside is ST2000DM001. So still a good deal, because these retail at about $129 without enclosure.

    • Re data security on return - easy solution:

I use TrueCrypt (www.truecrypt.org) to encrypt the entire drive, and then use it to back up all my data. Takes ages to format though (almost a day with USB2.0).

BTW I bought two of these - can't have too many backups….

Also use TrueCrypt on PC, but not for C drive as it buggers up my ability to use Norton Ghost.

      • there's a small performance tradeoff with that, though. But it's not a big deal for me to lose the enclosure, because I had kind of intended to take it out anyway. But once I saw my USB 3.0 running at >100MB/s, I figured there's probably no performance loss in using it externally.

  • I tried to run the CC9D firmware last night and it didn't work, it didn't detect the drive through USB 3.0 PCI card on bootup.

Is there a way to configure the drive in a Windows 7 environment so that it doesn't manage the power and spin down whenever it wants. Its very frustrating on long copies how it fluctuates in speed or sometimes stop copying for a while.

Any solutions please if you got them.

  • Can anyone please help me determine the speed of a Seagate Expansion External Desktop Drive 2TB USB3.0 purchased online from Officeworks for $98.00 on 5/06/12?

I don't wish to open the packaging or the enclosure because I may need to return it if the internal drive inside is only 5900 rpm.

The Model Number is STAY2000302, but this is for both the enclosure and the internal drive inside.

I understand that the internal drives inside are either ST2000DM001 (7200 rpm) or ST2000DL003 (5900 rpm) and from online posts on OzBargain it seems that the ratio is about 50:50.

The information on the white label on the box is:

    "2 TB Expansion Desktop Drive
    STAY2000302
    EDA SN: 2GHP7HCQ
    PN: 9SEAM2-572
    PRODUCT OF CHINA (HDD)
    ASSEMBLED IN CHINA DOM: 12/2011
    OTHER ITEMS MARKED THEREON
    BARCODE 7 63649 03091 2"

I am a bit worried by the date of manufacture of 12/2011 as this may be old stock containing a 5900 rpm drive.
