  • This or the Samsung A73 or S21?

    • I was going to ask the same question- pretty similar to the S21, a major difference is S21 battery is 4000mah vs ~4400 for the Pixel.

At that price, isn't it better to shell out a tiny bit more for a Pixel 6 with better battery/cameras/flat screen?

    • Pixel 6 is $999, so you'd pay (at least) $250 more. Not a tiny amount for some

It was $700 a few days ago… Who pays RRP on OZB?

How did I miss this deal?!?!?!? Shame on me

          warranty

    • +2

It depends on your needs. Pixel 6 is definitely superior but I am not fan of big chunky phones aside from not so good finger print sensor and other known bugs.

      • +1

Yea it is slightly smaller, still huge I guess. Also has curved screen which I hate for usability while holding, and although screen is the same size, with curved you effectively lose the curved part anyway. I guess time will tell how many and how big bugs will be on the 6a.

        • Yeah time will surely reveal the bugs :) but I'm afraid pixel 6a screen is not curved, it's flat!

          • @Lifehacker 1987: Yea you are right! Why the size difference then?

            152.2 x 71.8 x 8.9mm vs 158.6 x 74.8 x 8.9 mm

There are a few mm's in it!

            • +1

@onlinepred: Might look nothing on paper but it is in real life, even a few mm. Besides, the weight is a huge difference here, 178 gr vs 207 gr which make the phone look chunkier, I guess.

I guess no unlimited photos storage these days makes pixel 6 series unappealing.

    • +4

I think its been that way for at least the last 3 Pixel releases, so that shouldnt be an expectation anymore.

Clogging up petabytes of data for people to store their screenshots and memes forever seems unsustainable

HN are giving away a $150 GC with their Pre order I saw

But Gerry Harvey is a big poo poo head. I won't be buying from him again. I prefer my evil rich men to be less shameless.

      • +1

How is Telstra better than Gerry?

        • +5

          Anyone is better than Gerry

      • +1

Bezos needs more money for cockrockets so we should go with Amazon instead of HN.

    • Gerry is retired now.

  • +3

overpriced for what it is, specs average, ( e.g still no wireless charging, slow fast charging , 12mp camera), what is Google smoking?

    • Yes correct.

    • Nothing phone 1 could be a good alternative

      • No immediate plans for release in the US though, let alone Australia

        • They already said they wouldn't have a plan for US right now and 5g isn't supported on this phone over there but they clearly mentioned Australia although when you click their Australian website It weirdly redirects to Singapore at the moment!

    • not the same shit as apple……

  • So how long till this phone drops to 500

    • +1

      Not long I guess.
Except quick updates being a google phone, I don’t see anything special in it. There are much better options available in this price range.

      • +2

I haven't been able to find any better options in this price range, with as good of a battery, camera or processor.

But guess I'm basing this off the current $499 jbhifi trade in deal.

At $649 yeah I think I agree. There are a lot of options, even getting s21 fe, s22 or pixel 6 is possible. Or a73 etc

Though imo this phone has better battery, processor and camera than almost anything within the range. I prefer it over flagships due to higher battery

I've been researching and tossing up between a lot of mid range and either their camera is not as good or the processor is lacking. This is the first phone besides lack of headphone jack that hits all the important notes for me. At $499 jbhifi deal it's no brainer. At $649 it's a meh haha

        • is the camera any good though? isn't it the same hardware as the pixel 3?
The thing that puts me off most is no wireless charging.
I thought google made great phones back in the day of the nexus 5 and og pixel xl, but lately they just seem like buggy expensive messes

          • +1

@DeToxin: Yes, it has the same main camera specs as Pixel 3-5

I.e. the camera is good and blows anything mid range out of the water. I have a pixel 4 atm and the camera is awesome

Despite not being latest and greatest Pixel 6, it's still good.

And yeah depends if you ever got into wireless charging which I didn't.

I think there were many great phones back in the day. I still remember htc m8 being one of the best phones of all time and there being many great choices. Right now you have to pick your poison as the choice is thin.

I don't think Samsung does a much better job for the price and no more great low cost phones like oppo Reno z. They've instead gone full high price flagship. Sony and Asus barely offer anything competitive in this range either

            • @takutox: I guess my priorities have changed a bit. Now I just want decent specs with:
              1. Wireless charging
              2. Good battery life
              3. Little/no bloatware
              4. Good cellular connectivity

        • What device did you trade in if I can ask? Cheers

  • Will jbhifi match?

    • Yes they normally do.

    • No, I tried and they said they don't match as it requires Telstra ID. Seems others were unable too in the JB hi-fi thread

    • I think ymmv in store but online or through call definitely nope. They had a instant paste
rejection response about requiring Telstra ID and are aware of it

I'm sure someone who is willing to try via store and is lucky will get a success and be able to apply the $250 jbhifi to this after pricematch

  • Why not go with JB Hi-fi trade-in for $499? Just need to find an eligible phone to make a trade-in transaction and get the $250 voucher, then cancel the trade-in request?

    • they would charge you for the trade-in amount still

      • let's say you trade-in a phone which has the value of $100, then SquareTrade will give you a $100 gift card, and a $250 voucher.

Option 1: you use both of those things (gift card and voucher) to buy your Pixel 6a, you'll need to pay JB-Hifi $399 from your credit card. Then you cancel the trade-in transaction, SquareTrade will charge you $100. So you ended up paying $499 for your Pixel 6a ($399 to JB and $100 to SquareTrade)

Option 2: you use the voucher only, i.e, you are paying JB $499. Then you cancel the trade-in transaction. SquareTrade will invalidate the $100 gift card that they sent you, and charge you nothing.

        • if that's the case then I would put my 13 pro in for the trade-in haha. Thanks for the info

        • But isnt that 250$ discount still a win? Or would they take that back too?

  • +1

    Decisions…this or the S21 FE…

Mainly worried about all the software issues that have been bugging the Pixel 6 series…

    • everything on the s21 fe is better except for camera and os

      • I actually find Samsung's One UI quite polished and not inferior to vanilla android (even though I personally use Microsoft launcher, as I came from a Lumia). With pixel 6's softwares bug history (seems like they've been mostly ironed out), it is really making me think twice. I guess it'll depend on whether the price can go to$650 level some time later to entice me over.

        • tbh I would get the nothing phone 1 instead of this. Unless I'm willing to pay flagship dollars, the mid range is more about experience and having fun to me. The nothing phone 1 probably not as good as this in term of build quality, support, specs, but if I really care about those things, I would have go with flagships

          • @trantonz: I want nothing phone 1 but the main colour white is sold out, it's $749 vs pixel 6a $499 at jbhifi (and can also use gift cards), not as good camera or processor

At $749 starting to bleed into flagship deal category. Also, camera, processor, batt and build quality worse. Size is too big for me too

That's $300 aud difference. If money is not a main concern then yeah nothing is good choice

I agree with fun factor and will probably pick up a nothing phone 1 as a gift because of this. Only problem is no stock for much better looking and main white colour

            • @takutox: true. I have no doubt we will see better deal for pixel 6a, even the regular 6, than buying the nothing phone 1.
If only the nothing phone is around $500 sigh

  • Cheaper here if you want a gift card instead

  • Xiaomi 11t pro has been under $640 delivered with GST ex Banggood. I know. Banggood right!!?? Much better phone than anything mentioned.

  • Shopback cashback doesn't apply for outright phone purchase right?

  • I am a current Telstra user, and I want to get it out right with the $100 off.
But I don't like the idea that I have to agree for a credit check, as I don't think it is necessary for a outright purchase and there is no contract or plan change neither.

I asked the staff member on social media and this is the answer

Hello, whenever you add new plans or items or make purchases with us, a credit check may be conducted as part of that to ensure we have up to date info, especially if it's been some time since this info may have been updated last.
