      đŸ’©
      The new low for Marvel.

      • +6

        Why's that?

        • +8

(Frantically grabs popcorn and sits down)

        • +13

          Female characters are scary.

        • +6

He has opinions on a movie he hasn't seen because of the focal character…

          • @colblair: It's a series but your point stands. However the CGI certainly needed some work based on the earlier trailer they released for it.

          • +9

@colblair: A series but there is a, definite, pattern on that. Rotten Tomatoes had to stop people reviewing movies, before they were released, because the incel guys got scared of strong female characters. It would be hilarious if we weren’t seeing the horror story, on civil rights, that is playing out in America at the moment. Funny how “small government” and “freedom” people want to run every aspect of other people’s lives. How free speech becomes censorship and book burning. OMG somebody might have a different opinion to us; well we can’t have them portrayed on the screen.

Honestly, I will watch the first few episodes to see what it is like. It could be funny, it could be awful, but it is just another series on the watch and see.

We’ve just been watching Foundation, and it is beautifully shot, but just very slow. Also, it doesn’t have a lot to do with the original books. However, I wouldn’t try to stop anyone watching it.

            • +1

@try2bhelpful: @try2bhelful Superb comment. And it's also funny how those "freedom" people always seem to want to elect fascist dictator types who end up scaring the "freedom" people of other countries & who eventually end up taking away freedoms the most.

        • +9

          Why's that?

Have you not seen the trailer?

Main character: "I want to live a normal quiet life"

Also the main character: "I'm going to voluntarily subject myself to a very dangerous process knowingly turning myself into a giant green monster even after seeing the issues it caused my cousin"

It's the most contrived crap from Marvel yet and that's really saying something.

Edit: My opinion has nothing to do with the gender of the character. My issue is the entire storyline is flawed. Just like all modern Marvel crap, regardless if the character is male, female or talking tree branch (there is literally a talking tree branch in one of these pieces of shit isn't there?).

          • +3

@PainToad: Why do you spend time watching movies and being invested in things you hate?

            • +8

@Gehirn: Doesn’t watch trailer: You don’t anything about it so can’t criticise it
Does watch trailer: Why you watching stuff you don’t like?

              • @FireRunner: I wouldn't keep track with a 15 year+ movie/tv universe if I didn't like the rest of it. By this point it's just common sense to avoid it.

                • +3

@Gehirn: I wouldn’t watch entire movies or shows of something that looks like garbage but watching a trailer takes like 3 minutes. You might see something interesting every once in a while even if you’re not a fan of the usual works.
Also criticism is good. It highlights flaws and can help improve future works. Fans often get defensive and refuse to hear any criticism, valid or not, and simply write of the person as dumb, racist, sexist, etc without properly considering the argument

                  • +2

@FireRunner: To add my 2cents. While what PainToad said seems valid, he also used some words that are along the lines of the MCU "haters" (I define this as people who dislike MCU and want everyone to know about it possibly to seem superior). Criticisms are indeed good but if one thinks MCU is a piece of shit then willingly watches an MCU trailer then publicly comments about its shittiness with no context, then that person very much seems like a hater.

But your point is valid that fans also oftentimes label critics as sexist, racist, etc because of their criticism. Though to be fair, that's what you see in social media

          • @PainToad: You said "new low" Hulk has been around for donkey's years

          • @PainToad: @PainToad

From what I've gathered about the comics and what appears to be the case in the show going by the trailer, she's in an accident and needs a blood transfusion from her cousin which gives her the hulk abilities.

The car crash is featured several times through the trailer, and I suspect that somebody tried to murder her due to legal work.

            • @CodeExplode: I didn't get that vibe from the trailer (when she's going through the transformation she certainly doesn't look injured), but if that is the case it helps with the believability of the story. I'll watch the first episode and see.

  • +5

You will definitely not be asleep after you watch this

    • +4

I almost was. Did not really enjoy it

      • +3

        IMDB rating of 5.4. Oof

        • -1

If you take out the scores of 1 the average is around 6-7 which I think is more accurate. A lot of people review bombed because they didn't use Tim Allen to voice Buzz.

          • +5

@skian: They didn’t use Tim Allen? WTF?!?!

          • @skian: A lot of people review bombed it because of the gay kiss

  • +30

Gotta pay me for watching this again.
    I really regret my money.

Don't waste your time on this.
Flat story line, shallow character build up and no chemistry between characters.

Never thought Pixar could do so bad. Missus and I felt so disappointed when the credit started rolling.

    • +16

Things changed when Disney bought them. It’s been downhill ever since

      • +17

just like star wars… can't just have a good thing without having a heap load of political correctness.

        • +7

The Mandalorian has been really good. The problem with the sequel trilogy is they didn't have a plan when they started making the movies. I was worried when Trevorrow got the second movie as his only notable film was Jurassic World and I thought the new Jurassic movies were trash.

        • +2

Wow, someone voted you down for that?
The woke is strong around here.

          • -4

@EightImmortals: In the words of Inigo Montoya.

“You Keep Using That Word I Do Not Think It Means What You Think“

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke

Just, typical, bigoted misuse of a word.

            • +7

@try2bhelpful: Cheers, it is a term that has evolved a few times and I am using it in current definition.

"But the meaning of woke evolved again with the rise of "cancel culture" — as the two terms saw increased use, they became intertwined in the public consciousness. Often, someone gets canceled after they say something insensitive – something not woke. So in addition to meaning aware and progressive, many people now interpret woke to be a way to describe people who would rather silence their critics than listen to them.

The scope of the word has expanded to fields including education and the corporate world."

              I.E. "Go woke, go broke."

Examples, Anything Disney in the last 5-10 years, The new LOTR Amazon show, the list is quite long. See 'The Critical Drinker' for further information. :)

              (p.s. I didn't neg you)

              • +2

@EightImmortals: That isn’t the “current definition”. Part of the way of belittling someone’s views is to distort the language. Mindlessly using “woke” as a pejorative is lazy use of the language. People need to educate themselves.

        • +2

What’s politically correct about it? And if you say it’s because the elderly female couple give each other a peck on the lips for all of half a second then you need to re-evaluate.

      • +1

Disney bought Pixar in 2006, when Pixar had only released 6 films. I agree there have been some misses since then (Good Dinosaur comes to mind) but I think their recent struggles are due to being in a bit of a transition period after losing Lasseter, Catmull, Unkrick from Pixar and Iger from Disney in a short timeframe.

I've not seen Lightyear yet, but I am prepared to be disappointed.

      • +16

        Movies since Disney bought them
        - Cars
        - Ratatouille
        - Wall-E
        - Up
        - Toy Story 3 & 4
        - Cars 2
        - Brave
        - Monsters University
        - Inside Out
        - The Good Dinosaur
        - Finding Dory
        - Cars 3
        - Coco
        - Incredibles 2
        - Onward
        - Luca
        - Light Year

3-4 average to bad movies in that?

How is that downhill. Imagine having 18 movies in the last 16 years. 12+ of which are good to amazing in quality and calling that going downhill.

        • +7

          Wall-E was fantastic

        • -6

haven't watched a single one of those..

        • For me it is

          • Cars
          • Ratatouille
          • Wall-E
          • Up
          • Toy Story 3
          • Inside Out
          • Coco
          • Luca

          vs

          • Toy Story 4
          • Cars 2
          • Brave
          • Monsters University
          • The Good Dinosaur
          • Finding Dory
          • Cars 3
          • Incredibles 2
          • Onward
        • You forgot Soul and Turning Red.
Pretty sure they were partnered or working closely with Disney in earlier films too so I doubt the Disney buyout made much difference anyway

    • +2

Cheers I was taking the youngin to see Minions already but I did wonder if it was the right choice…

      • Took my 2 boys yesterday. They loved it. 7 and 5 year old. It's a kids movie and it should be seen as that.

    • +2

Totally agree. Even hung around at the end until the credits finished to see the usual Pixar ending piece at the end. 5 minutes of my life I won’t get back.

    • +2

Top Gun Maverick is the better zoom zoom movie this year.

      • -1

Careful, the American football beach scene could be interpreted as a bit homo-erotic by some people here

        • Careful, you’ll give some people flashbacks to Putin stripped to the waist riding a horse.

  • +5

I thought it was already on Disney+ given its available in HD and UHD online already

    • +3

Oh yeah, looks like it's leaked already and it's available to download. Streaming companies need to step it up

    • Yup got it about a week ago.

Can't bring myself to watch it though.

  • +18

Is this the one with the gay kiss?

    • +3

      Thats 0.2 seconds long yes

    • +4

There's a half second smooch between an older same sex couple, irrelevant to the plot.

I like how people are up in arms about an insignificant gay kiss, you never hear about these issues when almost every Disney movie has a hetero romance central to the movie.

      • -1

Neither is for children. But it seems to me the gay agenda is being forced.

        • +11

Media pretending that gay people don't exist is an agenda, media treating them as regular people like anybody else is not an agenda, it's just not playing along with the agenda that you're used to anymore.

          • +2

@CodeExplode: Quoting musky from below: Buzz Lightyear has a black female boss who is in a same sex marriage. All the intersectional boxes ticked.

This movie is heavy on the social engineering, this from Disney the home of Snow White.

The Groomer label doesn’t sound so unfair to me.

        • +12

A simple kiss, isn't for children? What kind of repressed and sad childhood did you have. Jesus christ, they're not giving each other reacharounds. It's a kiss, go back to the 1800's.

        • +1

          Never should religion imo.

But since Disney bought Star Wars they've been pushing that Jediism.

          • +2

@Caped Baldy: Yeah, but who doesn’t want to be able to move rocks with your mind. :)

Today I walked past a couple of groups proselytizing for the Jehova Witnesses. I didn’t say anything, they can do what they like, but it does worry me that religious groups have influenced society to deny people their civil rights. In America this has gone into turbo drive. People go nuts over one gay kiss; but don’t seem worried about hours of violence. Seems a tad weird to me.

        • +11

Huh? The gay agenda that gay people exist and should be treated with dignity and respect? So are there any other groups you want to exclude whilst we are at it? Asians, Jews, Blacks, women? Because, throughout history, the same arguments have been used to discriminate against them, as well. I find myself, genuinely, astonished by this sort of attitude. Nobody is forcing you to be gay, just asking you to be tolerant.

    • +5

Good decision. Disney trying to infiltrate our children's minds.

      • +4

        100%

    • +7

Are you people (profanity) serious? Get off Ozbargain while you're at it too.

      • +8

100% agree. How dare people with different opinions and values use OzBargain.

        • +2

Yes. All you opinionated ozbargainers, how dare you have morals that differ from Disney. You should be robots for that's our next evolution.

  • +20

No chance Andy would’ve wanted a Buzz Lightyear toy after this movie, 10000% would’ve wanted a Sox toy

  • +2

Am I the only one who enjoyed the movie?
I feel like it’s impossible for people to enjoy something these days :/

    • +8

I've recently seen this, Thor and Top Gun and this was the only one I didn't really enjoy, so it's not impossible for me to enjoy things.

Lightyear just felt very confused and fragmented. It had bits that gave me vibes of the start of Top Gun, from Interstellar and other movies, but it felt more like they were stuck for ideas so they mashed all that stuff together rather than coming up with a good storyline that keepa you wanting to know what happens next.

The climactic scenes weren't all that engaging and the story in between fell very short. You could argue it's a kids movie, but plenty of other kids movies have catered to older generations well and older generations grew up with Toy Story, so have a vested interest in this story that just wasn't very engaging.

Doesn't hold a candle to Shrek, Cars, Monsters Inc, Frozen etc etc which don't suffer from the problems above

      • +1

I guess the whole "time manipulation" story has been done to death as of late.
I've recently been going into films without trying to compare them to their prequels, or other movies for that matter. And just watch the movie for what it is. (Not even sure what Lightyear is classified as. Prequel, Standalone?). I tend to enjoy the movies more without that comparison in the back of my mind.

Agreed that originals do have better story lines. Getting more difficult to set the bar higher and higher these days.

        • +1

I am with you, I thought Lightyear was decent and worth a watch and my kids loved it. It's the same as movies/shows that are based on books/games there will always be the inevitable comparison. I just watch things as standalones and dont compare them and find myself thinking most things are decent or at least that I haven't wasted my time. I think some people enjoy jumping on the bandwagon being haters "I couldn't get past halfway so I turned it off" mentatlity.

          • @skian:

It's the same as movies/shows that are based on books/games there will always be the inevitable comparison.

The comparisons are not always bad. The Witcher is a great example of when this is really well done.

        • I think the movie died for me when Buzz, apparently a highly decorated trained astronaut, was surprised that time dilation was a thing. Further, that no one else (scientists?) mentioned and or realised before his first flight that it would happen, and that after finding out it made any sense to keep sending him up there.

People capable of FTL/ALT travel, unaware of year 12 physics concepts…

I know it's a kids movie but god damn that plot hole pissed me off.

    • +5

I actually really enjoyed this movie. I feel like people went into it with expectations of grandeur, some adult plot line or something, but forget the words at the beginning "In 1995 Andy got a toy. That toy was based on a movie. This is that movie."

It's a movie for kids Andys age, in 1995, so like 10 years old.

Was the story a little flat and easy to grasp? Yes, of course!
Was there a gay kiss? Yes, but who cares, no one did in 1995 and no one should in 2022!
Was the movie boring? Maybe to some people, I was bored in Top Gun Maverick, each person enjoys their own thing!

I'm not saying there weren't flaws, but for a kids movie, it was actually pretty great and I really want to go and buy a Buzz Lightyear again

    • No we thought it was bloody brilliant.

  • +6

This movie is a shame :(. Weak and boring

  • -8

    Ozforums

  • +1

Enjoyed the movie. Really liked how they made a movie out of a character from the Toy story world. A bit too meta for some by the looks of it, but overall it was entertaining.

  • -2

Anyone knows the exact time of gay scene in that movie? Need to skip while watching with family.

    • +18

Not exactly sure but given you live in the 1900s you'll probably not see it

    • +34

It happens multiple times through the movie and there's a whole scene where buzz just talks directly to the audience and tells children how to be gay.

You're best just skipping the whole movie imo.

      /s

      • +4

Yes, I will skip the whole movie. Not gonna lose any entertainment

    • +1

      Sure it's a gay scene?

      • +9

It's a show of affection scene which will trigger the simplest of people.

    • -2

I would just skip the whole movie to save myself the trouble or having to explain it to the kids. Bad enough having to explain to a 6 yo why a girl and boy can touch lips in the movie but they can't at school….

      • +11

I can't wait for my kids to grow up so I can teach them that love is love and bigotry is bad

        • -1

          Aren't you just so virtuous!

          • +12

@Bdawg: And your alternative is? Let’s teach kids to be bigots so they are unfit to deal with the reality of society? We aren’t saying you need to be gay just acknowledge that gay people exist and have a right to be treated equally by society. Why wouldn’t you bring up kids to be like that?
