      Mineral - NO

Tell that to my 24-year-old Falcon!

  • Will this be ok for my 2005 xtrail? I reckon that i get about 300-400km/l. I'm currently using 5W 40 fully synthetic, but is that overkill?

    • +1

I think 10W40 is as better viscosity for high mileage engines, providing better oil pressure on start up.

I agree with your first statement but you run the risk of starving the engine of oil on cold start up if your engine wasn't designed for it.

I always try and stick to the cold number but increase the hot number by 10 for older engines. The idea here is when you're not stressing the engine too much, you want to get oil everywhere as fast as possible, and then when to operating temp and working the engine harder, you want more protection.

        Maybe stick to making tea?

Edit: I know this is quite controversial, we might need jv here if we really want to piss everyone off.

        • Correct me if I'm wrong, but for high mileage engines where the tolerances are not as tight anymore, the higher cold if both hot and cold provides better ability to protect the engine. Mechanics, stealerships and Repco guys tell me the same. There's also a reputation of manufacturers to specify an oil that is in fact too thin to provide adequate long term wear protection. They do this to meet tighter efficiency and emissions regulations.

        • Your thinking is correct, lowest cold viscosity is best. Not a bad idea to increase hot viscosity on engines that start burning oil due to age, but not before that point.

      • Lower cold start viscosity is always better. Oil pressure is just an indication your oil pump is working, whereas oil flow is what actually protects your engine.

Remember, oil is always too viscous when cold to properly protect the engine, even a 0W-30 oil is seven times thicker at room temp than it is at engine operating temp. You want one that leaves that state as quickly as possible.

  • If you're after a full synthetic option, the Valvoline SynPower 5W-30 is only $34.40.

      5L though, not 6L

Mineral oil for $34 delivered isn't that great to be honest.

    Full syn for $31 here:

I try to order but it said it doesn't fit my Mazda 3 2010, why ?

The product selection guides at the auto store are notoriously inaccurate, feel free to ignore them. Your owners manual will have a list of acceptable oils, use that instead.
