I had one of these phones presented to me today, they aren't free to unlock on the vodafone site, or this one wasn't,

    • maybe they have removed the free unlock for this phone? I've done it free of charge 2 months ago.

      • Bought one of these in March and unlocked it on Vodafone website no worries at all.

        • ya, I reckon it's a different story with the current Dick Smith ones. Theirs are locked to Vodafone and can't be unlocked it for free via the website.

    • These are not free to unlock,, These have a hard lock, not a soft lock.

I bought this from Vodafone online prepaid from Buckscoop link waiting for the credit now..

Bear in mind it is not free to unlock, even though I'd confirmed with vodafone on the phone before.

It costs 50 $ each to unlock these from vodafone. Instead of wasting hours with vodafone I got mine unlocked form codes on cell unlock pro / look up on ebay .

I still had to pay an extra 35 $ each for unlocking but atleast I had the pleasure of shafting Vodafone.

      • This is all good but it's not reason enough to neg the post.
The subject of the phone unlocking isn't the deal,it's just additional information to try and help the ozbargain community.
Please read the voting guidlines -

        • imho the deal is lousy if you have to pay for unlocking, hence a neg.

also don't take it so seriously brother, its oK, I appreciate the effort you haev taken in sharing but the deal by itself isn't good enough

Also : can you please edit > as its not free to unlock.

Might be able to unlock free here (has worked for some) -

  • there are free ways to unlock new 'locked phones'- but via the vodafone website isnt one

  • According to this post, has tried the Vodafone unlock site and it worked for this phone -

As per comment on the previous post: "This phone is not compatible with the Optus 3G (900MHz) network and as such won't be much use on the Optus 3G network outside metro and major regional areas."
This means that Amaysim, TPG and Virgin who get their service via Optus also won't be able to provide 3G outside metro areas.
Does anyone know if this is true?

    • Optus uses 3G 900, this phone is 3G 850 therefore the statement is true.
One needs to watch for phones that use utilise both 3G 850 and 900 to be compatible across any Australian network (like the Galaxy S2 that HN had last weekend).

        dragon69, thanks for the reply.
Judging by many reviews, looks like a good phone, it's a pity that it can't be used properly on Optus network. Otherwise I would've bought it.

    • same problem with the iPhone 3GS. Stupidly Optus still sell it!

  • My brother has this phone and randomly restarts and can be a tad unresponsive. Maybe try CM7 on it?

  • Looks like a good deal, pity it won't do Optus, I need a phone to replace my Optimus 7.

  • It will work on Optus 3g for 80% of the population, see edit in description.

    • Doesn't look as good as you are saying…
Optus 3G single band service UMTS2100MHz Coverage Map - New South Wales:
      http://www.optus.com.au/aboutoptus/About+Optus/Network+Cover…

From the map it follows that you won't get data and video with 3G single band service UMTS2100MHz in lots of areas. To get data in these areas you would need dual band 900/2100.

      • This is not what I am saying, did you follow the links in the description.I am just stating what Optus say on their website.
They are saying 80% coverage of the population not Australia.

  • I bought this phone 3 weeks ago from Dick Smith. It isn't unlocked and they want $75 for unlocking it on the Vodafone site. Also tried a paid unlocking service which was unable to provide an unlock code. I'm stuck at the moment :(

The phone itself is a bit of a disappointment. The sound during telephone calls is not very clear (I had a Galaxy Mini which had perfect sound by comparison).

The first week I had the phone it was very speedy but it is now quite laggy at times and really not as responsive as it should be.

    • Try the phone unlocking guys in the shopping centre, they can be unlocked via a z3x box, I did one yesterday.

    • I had the same issue like you till I install the Android Booster free app from the market. Best app ever! So it's pretty much confirmed that if you buy this phone from dick smith, you won't be able to UNLOCK it from the vodafone website.

    • OR try ebay with your Imie number

  • Where are you guys going that you won't be in the Optus 3G 2100MHz range?
    https://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobilephone/coverage

If your really concerned about such things shouldn't you be with Telstra?

And as others have mentioned, grab the Android Booster free app and/or MT Auto Killer..
