Tile Mate Bluetooth Tracker 2022 (2-Pack) $49.95 (Was $69.95) + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

63

This is the new 2022 model, now has non user-replaceable battery but is supposed to last 3 years with normal use - I have been wanting to buy some pros but they have been out of stock everywhere for a while now (at a decent price) so may pull the trigger.

The battery is a CR2032, welded to strips which are soldered to the board. You can pop the case open with a small screwdriver, break the welds and replace the battery then re-seal, but you are relying on pressure alone to maintain contact to the battery - you can buy 2032's online with the contact strips pre-welded and then solder them in, but I have not seen any with the right configuration of welded strips to match the PCB.

  • I have the pro of these and its been great. With Amazon Prime day tomorrow, it might be worth holding out?

Since having Apple AirTag and Samsung SmartTag
    Never look back to Tile

    • +1

I moved across to the AirTag too from tile. It’s been great.

    • Are the Samsung smart tags officially available in Australia and do many people have them?

      • +1

Not sure if they're "officially" available, but I've been using mine for a while now. I have them mostly to find my keys and have been lucky enough to always have them within Bluetooth range.

The trouble is in a multi device household Airtags work with iOS, Samsung Smart tags work with Samsung phones - stupidly restrictive in my books.
I have some tiles and some mytags, they do just what I need them to do.

I know there is some functionality with Apple tags on android, but not good enough in my books.

    • I hate my airtags over tile… had tile for years, then switched to airtags, they are so quiet… and they take forever to connect.

I think Airtags have a much larger and bigger network if you loose them outside the house obviously that is great, but if you loose them inside the house tile is much better. I am going to get these and have both.

    non user-replaceable battery

    This is just completely inexcusable

    • Yeah why would you do this for a device that uses a standar CR2032.

    • +7

More plastic waste. This should not be encouraged.

      • +5

Anti Consumer by Tile to force repurchases and more plastic waste for landfill

        • Probably as a result of laws against cell batteries.

Hence my tips on how to reuse them.

    • +2

The only positive I've found is that it is much more child safe, which is important to me.

      • +1

…and that's probably the reason it was done. If it was too easily accessible they might have to recall them like a lot of other devices. Easier and cheaper for them to just have them soldered in and avoid this potential.

        • +1

But they continue to produce the user-replaceable tile pro - no this was a step back to earlier models because the company is finding they cannot get enough people on subscription plans hence the engineered obsolescence.

          • @singlemalt72: Through Aussie retail? Grey imports don't care about compliance.
Can't see any on a quick google. Tile Pro (2022) seems to only be in US at the moment and doesn't look Aus compliant from the pics I can see. Though all they would have to do is add a little screw to the cover from what I understand.

But you're probably also right, I don't have any background on Tile…

            • @NigelTufnel: Yeah, you're right, I hadn't looked into the battery compartment which would explain why they are not available in Australia.

      • You can have a small screw to keep the Tile secured.
So long as you don't enrol your 3YO into a watch repair course, it would be unlikely they would have the skills to open it.

  • How do these work? If on keys and left well outside of range of my phone, doesn't seem like its much use (if lost outside of home)?

    • +1

You are relying on the tiny tile user base to be in range…

Samsung will be better but as they are opt in… still not great.

Apple Airtags are the only way these work perfectly as everyone is opted in but you need an iPhone.

    • But if you retrace your steps within about 10 or 15 metres of where your item was lost you should hear the notification sound.

  • +2

Sometimes my phone can't find the tile even when it's right next to it.

Or vice versa I double press the tile and can't find my phone.

Otherwise it mostly works. You can just get the older model with replaceable battery.

    • Good to know it’s not just me. Of course, sometimes I disable Bluetooth for various reasons and that is always a good reason for it not to work.

  • Still on the fence on which I should get.
Main use will be for the dog, maybe for keys/wallet.

For those that have experience, shuld I get this or the Samsung one.

The Apple one seems like the best, but my partner and I are both Android users.

    • Tile is the way to go for Android users IMO. They have a good range of different trackers at reasonable price points, they work with any brand of phone, and have the largest network / install base outside of the Apple ecosystem - even in my semi-rural area there are more than a hundred local users. I've found them (ha!) to be really reliable.

      • Really? From all the reviews Ive read, seems like the Samsung is the way to go. Way more potential users, where Tile will most likely die soon

  • What do people use these to track. In America apparently they're used to steal cars. A cop in this YouTube video explains it.

  • Everyone on this thread is saying these aren’t great and aren’t as good as AirTags but then on the last deal I saw for AirTags everyone is saying they’re not good and tile is much better. So which one is it???

    • -1

      Obviously those people are silly.

Barely anyone owns tiles and there is a huge population of iPhone users… which one do you think?

      • people who own iphones are much more likely to misplace things?

  • -2

E-Waste. On that basis alone, I wouldn’t buy it.
