There's nothing like a great knife deal.

And this is nothing like a great knife deal.

Notwithstanding the glowing reviews from a handful of free product recipients - I particularly enjoyed the ones who enthused, "This is a lovely bread knife" - I wonder which part of Germany this bizarrely profiled "ANTINIVES German High Carbon Stainless Steel Knife" is made in?

54 HRC metal hardness (I've got staples that a stronger than that) suggests that wherever it is, they likely have a lucrative aluminium recycling plant and a nearby rice paddy field.

    Pass…

      I doubt it’s even made in Germany…

    • +8

Worse yet, just got price hiked from $24.99 to the never-actually-sold-at $47.99, yet another fine illegal example of a tried and failed attempt to egregiously mislead customers.

      • +3

That is an awesome pickup and incredibly dodgy by the seller.

        Post should be removed.

    • I also like that it is a serrated blade according to the ad.

    • +1

I groaned when I saw this

      • I knew you would…

The only saving grace is that it looks like they only had two in stock!

    • 54 - 56 is typical for chef's knives. Knife steels aren't all the same, of course. HRC is usually a balance between hardness and toughness - as hardness increases, toughness decreases. The knife looks shit because the steel isn't mentioned - usually a tell tale sign. The sales blurb does say 54+, so this is in the ball park. In reality I imagine they just wrote details down from wusthoff (their stamped knives are 56) or some other manufacturer; and it probably has nothing at all to do with what the knife really is.

      • 54 is typical for poor chefs knives.

Even comparatively soft German and European steel seldom drops below 56 rockwell, and quality European blades are is typically forged to a much higher degree to improve the quality and edge-holding capacity of the blade. It's not so much that toughness decreases with higher rockwell steel, but that harder steels are invariably used to fashion finer edges, and so they become more susceptible to chipping. I wouldn't say that mashed potato is any tougher than a baked potato, but then I've never chipped mashed potato either…

This is cheap and nasty in every sense. Avoid this and all its ilk…

        • "and so they become more susceptible to chipping"; yes, that equates to less toughness in the knife industry.

Again, no. For one thing it's a public liability issue - sharp shards in your meal. Ease of sharpening and steel used - usually 5Cr15MoV, 52 - 56. https://bladeprotection.com/5cr15mov-steel/

          • @poohduck: I knew there was a reason all those Japanese restaurants and master chefs were going out of business. Clearly it was the fault of their 61-63 rated VG10 and different blue steel knives, and all the lawsuits they were creating for an army of ambulance chasers. Not to mention the complicit journalists who steadfastly refuse to report on this litany of lawsuits…

5CR15MoV (and similar Chinese knockoffs and chromium-infused variants such as 8Cr13MoV) are popular because they are cheap and easy to sharper - which is equally important because they don't hold an edge. VG10 and most quality higher HRC steels have better corrosion resistance, edge retention, and toughness.

Can we get an AMA session with whoever came up with the name "antinives" for a knife brand? It's really great

Partially explains why they innovated and made a Chef's knife with a 180 degree spine and metal that has the hardness of plasticine.

        Sorry - "anticine"…

Apologies for the terrible deal. I usually just post whatever comes up on the coupon page over 60% off, but I'll take future care to check whether the deal is good or not before posting.

As all my deals posted are public information (coupons) directly from the Amazon site, whoever reported the post for socketpuppeting - that's not socketpuppeting. Go find something better to do.
