Gonna try to fit in to my gf’s tiny uniform. Wish me luck.

I don't think school uniforms qualify for the discount

    What is a "First Responder"?

    • +8

Not you, by the sounds of it.

    • +3

A first responder is a person with specialized training who is among the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency, such as an accident, natural disaster, or terrorism. First responders typically include law enforcement officers, paramedics, EMT's and firefighters.

The super cheap picture has nurses and hospital staff so…?

        • +1

          And lifeguards, but not police?

          • +1

@GG57: No paramedics or fire either which is literally the first thing I think of when I think "first responder" lol
Maybe they meant volunteers given SES is featured twice and lifeguards, coast guard. etc

            • @Brodenn: It really leads to the obvious question, who will decide if someone is a "First Responder" or not.

  • Forget pay offers inline with inflation, I'm in health for first responders day.
Last year the discount was off items already on sale, = more toolboxes

  • The next question is what to get for 25% off?

This is so 2020. Time to move on.

    • They can spend their $3000 NSW Bonus

    • +5

      This is so 2020.

They were heroes before the pandemic. They are heroes now.

      Time to move on.

Unfortunately, pandemics don't just end when some unqualified person like you online decides it's "time to move on".

There are currently 3,276 patients in hospital with COVID, 122 of which are in ICU and 30 are ventilated.

      Yesterday there were 39 deaths.

Plus hospitals are currently under a massive strain from a very bad season of the flu.

      • I'm not unqualified. I was required to work through the pandemic and to a degree I helped saved lives just like I did pre pandemic. I don't claim to be a hero or want special treatment. Just doing my job that I signed up for and love.

        • +2

          I'm not unqualified.

What are your qualifications that give you the ability to determine when a global pandemic has ended?

        • +1

          “…helped save lives”. Lol

        • +4

to a degree I helped saved lives

          Press x to doubt lol

        • +1

Most first responders would rather a pay rise that keeps up with what their job is rather than being called héros, being bought pizza by managers as thanks, or some other trinkit rather than being paid fairly.

          Oh.. Unless you're a doctor..

          • @FredAstair:

Most first responders would rather a pay rise that keeps up with what their job is rather than being called héros

            Why not both?

  • Does this include "Special Order" items?

    • +1
      • Discount off regular retail price. Excludes Special Orders, tyres, delivery charges, services, gift card purchases & charity donations. This offer is only available in store. First Responders will need to identify themselves via a work photo ID or uniform at point of purchase to receive discount.

According to this site, "Thank a First Responders Day" in Australia was 8th June?

Dont need a specific day to show appreciation. The more the merrier.

      • +2

It's the old problem about defining who is and who isn't a "First Responder" (whatever that American term means).
The link I provided is to a mental health support group, not a retail group.

      All participating Retailers: https://www.retail.org.au/firstrespondersday

First Responders Day takes place for one day only on the last Thursday in June, this year being 30 June 2022!

This event encourages retailers large and small to combine their efforts and thank first responders for their courage, commitment and contribution to protecting our Australian community during time of crisis by offering a special discount to these workers at all participating Australian retailers.

Our first responders are ordinary people with an extraordinary commitment to protecting and saving others. Some work in the field day-to-day, some follow the call-to-action to assist during times of crisis, the common thread is our first responders all selflessly dedicate their time and lives to protect and save others.

First Responders Day is an online and in-store event to encourage first responders to connect with the retail industry so we can say “thank you” for their efforts in protecting our community.

      • "First Responders Day is an initiative of the Australian Retailers Association in partnership with its members and strategic partners"

"…encourage first responders to connect with the retail industry…"

"For the purposes of this campaign, First Responders include:
        • Medical and healthcare workers: nurses, doctors, paramedics and ambulance/paramedic staff
        • Police personnel
        • Firefighters
        • Defence force personnel
        • Border force personnel
        • SES
        • CFA
        • Marine rescue teams
        • Lifesavers
        • Surgeons and hospital staff
        • Quarantine workers
        "

        • VRA is not on the list which definitely should be.

          • @LowRange: I agree, Victorian Rangers Association should be on the list, even if they did change their name /s

            • @mapax: lol never heard of them, but if they respond to dying plants then sure why not. :)

              • @LowRange: They do respond to dying plants! Depending on area we also do fire fighting, storm cleanup, wildlife rescue, predator control, first aid and searching for lost people.

                • @mapax: Interesting, i have never heard of them but it's been a while since i lived in Vic. In NSW the VRA does road crash rescue, vertical rescue and other specialist rescue like industrial and rural entrapment's, trains, planes etc.

Does the Vic Rangers Association do any accreditation training for land search operations or firefighting? Either way, they seem like a worthwhile organization.

                  • @LowRange: Sorry, I was being facetious and should have been clearer. The Vic Rangers Association was just a representative group for park rangers that changed their name in 2017.
Depending on the area of work some park rangers do accredited training for firefighting and some do search training, however some rangers aren’t much more than gardeners or tour guides.

Your VRA sounds more worthwhile in this context.

    • That's thank a first responder day, where all you plebs should say thanks. Tomorrow is our shopping day.

    • Was that the day they decided to give them the pay rise they've been waitkng for all those years?

      No.. Didn't think so

  • These offers make sense to me so long as they apply to volunteers like SES, firefighters, life savers, etc… I really don't think qualified professionals, some earning $1m+, merit these discounts.

    • Relax bro I doubt the ones earning $1m+ would even have interest in this.

  • +1

Let's start a "what about me!?" riot at fed square tomorrow guys!

  • is the 25% off applicable to those items which are already on sale?

    • +1

Was in previous years. I got some bargains. Can't remember if I paid with GCards

      • I wouldn't be so sure

        • Discount off regular retail price. Excludes Special Orders, tyres, delivery charges, services, gift card purchases & charity donations. This offer is only available in store. First Responders will need to identify themselves via a work photo ID or uniform at point of purchase to receive discount.

I know I got a battery from them a couple of years back and they did a bigger discount for me and put it in for free. Stores may vary, I guess
