Great price! Shield is a tank of the streaming devices.

      • +11

        And got laughed at

      • +4

No kodi, no sideloading of the apps and locked down OS. If you're only using the legit streaming apps then its great i guess

        • You got it. It has its flaws but its the “tank” for many who use legit streaming.

          • +2

            @expatOz: iSheep

The Shield is even better for legit streaming

            • -2

              @scuderiarmani: How so exactly?

            • -1

@scuderiarmani: Shield just arrived and its going back tomorrow. Laggy as hell. The keyboard via Nvidia app is super crappy, jumps between inputs. The VPN app doesn't do split tunneling it says it would. CEC volume control doesn't work on Hisense TV without compromises .. just to mention a few issues.

              Apple TV is far superior.

Shield, no frame rate matching for Netflix, Prime etc…
Android 11 causing all kinds of headaches for devs, stuffed up Emby and Plex for me and all who want to direct play back 4K MKV remuxes.

They all have one issue or another, it comes down to what works for you.

After using a Shield since 2015, I may very well move to Apple TV as Infuse is doing a better job of playback than anything I can use on Android 11, and I am not going through the pain of rolling it back to Android 9 to get things to work again.

  • I just happened to be wanting one of these, was waiting for prime day. thanks OP

Tempted to replace my ozb favourite Vodafone TVs. They are all too convenient though( iptv which I can change channels and watch like normal fta tv, Kayo sideloaded, Netflix, Disney, iview, kodi etc). It’s seems to have a slight red tinge though for some reason.

Using a old Telstra tv on the main TV just to upscale 4K from it from Kayo for sport lol.

Might hold off a bit longer

    • You can add TV channels to these. It's clumsy but I don't watch them either though.

This is a good price. I paid $289 off Amazon back in April. Time to make a price protection claim!

  • Awesome, thanks OP!

  • +3

Hopefully Amazon price matches the pro model.

Not going to give the leech that is Gerry Harvey a single cent.

    • Same. Waiting for this to occur before buying.

    • Sad…I'm just sitting here refreshing and they aren't doing it. Not that I care about boycotting Harvey, I just can't be bothered driving there as it's out of my way.

      It's live.

      Amazon matched

  • Anyone find an app to play home videos and photos (stored on an attached HDD or on a NAS) well? I cant seem to find anything.

    • VLC?

Otherwise setup a basic Plex server

      • I use an emby server but photos and home video are not well presented and photos is pretty much unusable. Do u know if plex has a dedicated photos feature?

        • No I don't think so unfortunately

  • Paid $360 for mine and still really happy with it.

  • Is this better for netflix or the lg oled inbuilt netflix tv app?

    • +2

There is no advantage over the LG app, except maybe a little speed, but I haven't found that to be slow on my G1.
Neither does frame rate matching, they both play at 60Hz, you would need an Apple TV to get an advantage.

  • I'm gonna wait for Prime day, if there's a better deal I'll bite, otherwise waiting for a new version. Hopefully not long away

    Very timely OP.

Our shield remote recently died and stock of a genuine one is hardly anywhere. At $70-ish for the remote alone, I figured I may as well buy a whole new shield and have a spare unit in case the old one dies.

    • People actually use their remotes? I just use HDMI-CEC to control it.

      • I have HDMI CEC turned on as well as HDMI control on my tv but my tv Remote can't control the shield. Would solve my issue for free if it worked.

    • Ha in exactly the same boat. Once it went up on Amazon as well I even got the approval from the better half to upgrade. Bought the remote from Amazon. Naturally was faulty. Returned. Been waiting for stock since.. Bought this and will either keep spare or give the old to my parents! Upgrade their Google tv chromecast

      • My folks got a shield in late 2020 when they had been stuck at home all year and wanted a better Youtube experience on their TV (same model as mine). So my spare unit will remain mine. We use our shield everyday so I'm sure it'll need replacing sooner or later. Otherwise, I may buy one of the imitation remotes down the track and set the second unit up in the bedroom… Mrs wants a projector.

I wish I had waited for Amazon… save myself the delivery fee. But oh well, getting one is better than nothing.

  • Anyone with an existing shield 4k pro 2019 tell me if this game is playable potentially, through the Google play store?

    OCTOPATH TRAVELER: CotC
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_eni…

    • How could we know?

"Pre-register for a chance to get early access to this game"

      • The last time (a long time ago!) I got a game through the play store it would actually state whether the device was compatible or not (maybe just the not compatible part)

Anyhow I checked the system requirements for:

To play Octopath Traveler CotC on Android, the minimum requirement is a smartphone or tablet running Android 6.0 or higher and at least 2GB of RAM.
        https://www.mobigaming.com/2022/03/25/octopath-traveler-cham…

        and then I saw this:

All SHIELD TV devices are able to play most of the games available to Android TV on the Google Play store as well as play streamed games from GeForce NOW.
        https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4911

So can you play google play store games that you normally play on your smartphone or tablet with the Shield TV Pro and a blue-tooth/wireless controller?

    Amazon AU price matched Pro

    • Got one. No idea why. Seems like a good deal. Any tips for usage.

        Any tips for usage.

        Plug it in.

        • +1

          This.
Then turn it on by pressing the power button on the remote.

          • +1

@Maths Debater: Don't forget to insert the batteries into the remote.

  • Will this come with android 9 and have to be upgraded to 11. Already been down that path with my existing one and it's a pain.

Thinking of getting a 2nd one for the bedroom, which I will hardly use. Just thinking of it being a great price as a backup.

    • If you are lucky it will come with 9 and you can stop it form upgrading to 11 which is causing lots of problems.

    • What was the pain?
Everything I've experienced with these things is slick.

  • Best $200 I spent on an appliance!

  • +1

Still the only device which handles playback of my HQ 4K Remux files. Series X - Nope. Sony TV - Nope. Both had issues, where the Shield didn't hesitate.

    • -1

What app are you using to playback 4k Remuxes?
      Are they MKV or MP4?
      Dolby Vision, HDR10 or neither?

I have had constant drams with 4K MKV remuxes since Android 11 prevented Direct File Access for many apps.
I had to pull out my Apple TV over the weekend and buy a Infuse 7 Pro license to get things to play correctly. I am not a fan of ATV generally, hate the stupid remote, but at least it played things properly.

      • Plex, direct streamed from the NAS. MKV, HDR10 (no DV). Generally 60-100GB files

        • -1

Don’t have any DV or it won’t play it?
All files I tested over the weekend from my NAS to my 2015 Shield played as Transcoded and not direct play

  • Anyone that has one and use a USB DVB T/T2 tuner on it for FTA,
Or do you just use iptv app instead ?

Is it worth to spend more $90 to get Pro version? I have Google TV and Fire TV 4k max already. Thanks

    • +1

If you're only streaming then no. If you're playing local media you'll find some people saying they had issues playing large files on the tube version, possibly due to 2gb ram

      • +1

        Thanks mate.

  • is there a way to prevent updates to Android 11? sounds like too many issues?

is anyone successfully streaming up to 4K HDR with emby from a server with android 11?

  • Dammit. Got one for $300 few weeks ago. Not happy on missing out ~$50 savings.
Figure I get this and maybe 2 yrs time a new version comes out with enough content to support the new formats.

  • +1

Comparison between this and Fire TV 4K stick for streaming? Just a bit quicker/faster?

  • Was gonna get one but have a Chromecast with Google TV already. Between the separate power supply of the NVIDIA Shield TV stick and the UI not being as colourful as Google's, and neither having AV1 codec support.

NVIDIA though is more future proofed for sure than Google but AV1 future gives me pause.

  • Looks like this could be a Vendor sale - same price now on Amazon

Google TV with Kodi is perfect for streaming, can’t see a need for this spend.

    • What skin do you use?

      • -2

        Snake.

    • Does it do framerate matching yet? That was the only thing stopping me from getting one for Kodi

  • Specs can be found here for the current models*:

    Shield TV
    Shield TV Pro

    *Android OS may need updating

Links should be included in the description since the retailer sites are piss poor at this!

  • So if I bought this alongside a cheap 65in TV, like a TCL, Linsar or Hisense, would this allow me to bypass the poor default UI built into these TV's and give me an enjoyable TV experience on a budget or am I missing out on upscaling etc? Main uses is Plex, iview, bit of streaming… no BluRay or anything like that.

    • Pretty much, I barely use my LGs interface, but I also haven't had an aerial plugged into a tv for over 10 years.

    • Yes. I put in a Fire TV 4K on my shitty TLC TV. Don't have to deal with the TCL remote or the laggy built in UI anymore.
