  • Got a friend from Switzerland, and the way he talks about it makes it sound almost like a magical place!

    • +7

I’ve been to Switzerland a few times. It is beautiful but expensive. It isn’t a great food destination.

      • Best value for money grocery wise is southern Germany. (given all factors of price, choice and food safety)
Switzerland has officially 4 cultures and the sort of 30% migrants enrich the sort of food choice.
Probably only 2nd to Japan if it comes to food regulations so it all has its price.
Stay away from franchise crap. Everything else is subjective.

    • It is my favourite place in the world. It’s beautiful.

    • +2

It's a beautiful country - picture postcard pretty in some places with some of the most iconic scenery on planet earth.

The food can be somewhat hit and miss and the people can be a bit up themselves at times.

Easy to get to other European countries like Germany, Austria, Italy and France from there.

      • +1

Yes - good to point out the other options. It's very central.
Just because there is a sale to Switzerland doesn't mean Switzerland has to be the only destination.
I've been 3 times and not once did we stay in Switzerland…
Bavaria, Italian Lakes District, Tuscany / Venice, French Alps, French Riviera, Slovenia, Austria, down to Rome etc - even Paris is only 5 hours on the train.

Magical part of the world - Switzerland is beautiful for snow peaked mountain scenery, stunning lakes / waterfalls, and Alpine towns…but I wouldn't say it is the highlight

        • +1

The train system in Europe, particularly Switzerland, is brilliant.

          • @try2bhelpful: indeed - have used it extensively. I also hired cars, but only for pockets here and there for a couple of days, did 80%+ of travel on trains on two of the trips

            • @MrFrugalSpend: The sightseeing trains in Switzerland are amazing.

              • @try2bhelpful: Yes - Glacier Express, add in cogwheel Jungfraujoch, Mt Pilatus - Good place to visit for railway enthusiasts…

                • @MrFrugalSpend: We’ve done
                  - Interlaken to Schilthorn; via Trummelbach falls; a couple of times
                  - Lucerne and Mt Pilates
                  - Zermatt
                  - St Moritz
                  - Lugano
                  - Montreux

We did the major scenic routes the last time we were in Switzerland. Using a first class rail pass.

                  Not cheap but never forgotten.

          • @try2bhelpful: 2nd to Japan but much cheaper!

            • @payless69: I want to go to Japan. We had a friend who was the trade consul in Osaka and we could’ve stayed with him. Missed opportunities.

    • +1

Stunning place but the natives aren't friendly and it's very expensive.

      • +1

How expensive are we talking about? Would like to know to plan a trip.

        • +2

I've found it expensive but not cripplingly so. Eating out and drinking can be expensive but public transport is afforadable, especially if you can plan ahead. Hotels can also be expensive but downgrade your expectations a bit and stay off the beaten track and you'll be fine. When you think about it, Australia ain't particularly cheap when it comes to travelling around - especially post Covid.

          • @R4: Agree! Australia is considered expensive but given there's so many choices and location, eating out is still relatively cheap if you know where to look. When is the best time to go Switzerland?

            • @nightelves: If you want skiing then January to March. For Summer July and August. It is obviously crazy cold in winter but I found that their autumn and spring can be too rainy and/or coldish. In summer it is just ridiculously beautiful.

              • +1

@R4: Does it get really hot in Summer over there?

                • +1

@nightelves: Not really (by Australian standards anyway). It's just warm and pleasant.

              • @R4: I would go September/October. It will be cooler bit, probably, cheaper. We would buy premade soups, pasta, cakes from the supermarket. Much cheaper than eating out and not too bad.

                • @try2bhelpful: That wouldn't be my choice of time to go personally - can get too cool - but we're all different

                  • +1

@R4: I’ve been there a few times at that time of year and it was cool but not cold. Then again I am from Melbourne :)

      • +1

My large travel experience told me: Poverty countries have a much better hospitality. For example Iran has a bad reputation in the US. For anybody not travelling on a US passport there is a magic of friendliness. Blondie's with UK passports and exposing too much skin and hair may find a culture clash.
Switzerland is a "high price" island. But proper planing and reading the right forums it can also be best value for money. Shop at Lidl and you might never want to leave! Find the right airbnb and talk to the right people. Once you break the ice you find low crime and hidden bargains. It is half the size of Tasmania. Plenty of mountains, plenty to do and Easyjet makes Basel and Geneva cheap hubs. Install the Eurobus and Flixbus apps.

      • natives are very friendly especially if you speak german or french.

it is expensive because unlike what gerry harvey is deluded in thinking switzerland has the highest minimum wage in the OECD.

    • +2

Do your self a favor and pay few hundred extra to get at least May departure. Country will be on winter or just returning from winter stress during the promotion period. It will take couple of more months to come back to it's true beauty. Did the same mistake to save few bucks yet didn't see the true beauty of the country.

      • There's pros and cons. I like to avoid peak tourist season as well. I don't like queues and crowds. However yes for Switzerland its not the kind of destination that gets subjected to those, so better to wait like you suggest. If you are going to hop around to Rome, Paris, Venice etc - go shoulder season.

  • +1

Very good - considering it's $1,200 to fly return to just Singapore in the next few months

    • Yep even scoot is $659 one way - no checked luggage included 🥲

  • This is actually a great deal.
Anyone been to Switzerland in 2022 yet - any issues at airport/covidtesting?

    • +12

I was in Switzerland for April. It is one of the most beautiful places I've seen, and I've been to quite a few places. COVID is a non-issue there. No one wears masks or adheres to social distancing. Its as if COVID doesn't exist by the feel alone. All you need is to be vaccinated recently and you're good to go.
I paid $1300 return and that was roughing it with other cheaper airlines. Considering this is SWISS and Singapore, that makes this even the more amazing a deal.
As a deal, big thumbs up, but buyer beware! Switzerland is one of the most, if not the most expensive country in Europe. The Swiss are rich as hell and that reflects in pretty much everything you get there. Also, keep in mind that the months specified here are in the middle to just around the end of Winter which is fine if you want a Ski trip I guess. It is the best place for that, hands down. It gets very cold there.

      • +1

Would you advise to pack a box of Ramen?

        • +1

          I would pack mi-goreng

          • @nightelves: i would advis shopping at Migros for mi goreng

        • +2

When we went years ago, a lot of times we just got fresh bread, cheese etc. and had a picnic outside to save on eating costs. Almost everywhere you go has spectacular views so always worth it albeit Jan-March might be a bit cold.

      • lucky them, if only Australia didn't have a COVID issue.

        • -1

Yes, we have far too many covid sheep, who don't want to let their dear friend 'covid' go!

  • +7

Is it possible to have a few days stopover at Singapore (just to pig out) on the way there and back? Will it affect the price?

  • +1

There's also super cheap flights to Europe with Singapore in November/Early December (but not quite this cheap). I just booked Sydney-London then Zurich-Sydney from 9 November to 8 December for $1240 return. Was about $500 cheaper than the next cheapest airline.

  • How many days are enough for Switzerland? Two weeks?

    • +1

Yeah, 2 weeks is enough, maybe even a bit less… It's an expensive place for a holiday.

    • +1

It's crazy expensive. Time I visited, $12 small big Mac meal is about $19, put that into perspective.

      • +3

Get an air bnb and buy premade stuff from the supermarket. Much better cost and nutritional value.

        • +1

Yep but I use big Mac price as global price comparison between countries :)

          • @boomramada: Fair enough. Although I wouldn’t eat a Big Mac in any country :)

            • @try2bhelpful: Nah I wouldn't buy big mac in general but I have tried the maharaja burger in India ( always talk about in Big Bang Theory) and Lobster Burger in France from Maccas lol
Ah in Sri Lankan, Maccas fried chicken actually better than KFC lol

              • @boomramada: I try to avoid the “chain” food, where I can, but I don’t, necessarily, eat the local food either. I found a magnificent, relatively inexpensive, Nepalese place in Amsterdam that was terrific. Sometimes the best food can be going “ethnic”. I, also, like to go to the markets to try the local produce. The deli type produce in France, Spain and Italy are brilliant. You can keep the food costs down but you need to work at it. This is why I prefer Air BnBs because you get a kitchen.

      • Macca is your own fault! Kebab stores on every corner at half the cost!

        • How much was the kebab ? Probably cost x2 of the price in Aus ?
I remember basic tiny pizza was like $20

          • @boomramada: Everything is negotiable! No set prices. Yes they have a strong union that strictly prohibits Sunday work. Their Coles is called Migros and they now have to shut down their robo store in Zurich because of the union.
We booked a car from a comparison site in Florida. Arrived in ZRH and flogged it to the geographical centre of Sarnen. There they build the electric motors of the Mars Rovers! Sunday is Catholic holiday there, forget shopping. So we flogged it over the Brunig to Interlaken. Tourist Mecca! They have a Lidl that is open on Sunday because the union tried to be nice to hospitality workers. Food there is around half the cost of downunder!! So we bought Venison of first quality. Eg coffee capsules: 17c each but the cuppa at Hooters might exceed 10 bucks. It is called a free market. We flogged the car to Colmar F. Nice old town. Stuck the venison into the hallway microwave they actually provide for breakfast customers. But one can do that in France. Then we walked the old town. When we came back the whole reception still smelled like a venison restaurant. All over Europe you find mostly Muslims who run kebab stores for cash. We walked into the old town of Marseille. We were the only people left with white skin. No issue if you do not show off with an LV bag. We ordered kebab. Table service. When the operator cut the meat we saw blood coming out! I freaked and pin looked for a disguised bin. But then they they grilled the meat to perfection. Served us on a table with charm. Best of all: They absolutely refused to take our money until we were 100% satisfied!! Try that in Cadogans Shitville!

      • maccas is quite hard to find luckily, especially outside of Zurich and Geneva…

        • there are probably 50+ but only total idiots would go there!
But if you insist of being a freak, just load their app!

          • +1

@payless69: Ahh, there is the advantage of the MacShit. Sometimes finding, clean, public toilets is a tad difficult. Use of facilities for a small purchase. There is, always, the “promise to buy something afterwards then leaving”option; known as a MacShit with Lies.

However, Switzerland, can be better than other parts in Europe for public loos. I saw some great examples that self cleaned.

  • +3

Airfare is the least you hv to worry, its a beautiful place but it IS expensive. For those who can afford it good for you. I remember when I went there 20 odds years ago we had to wrap our lunch at our hotel before we went out few days of our trip in order to stay within our budget and have enough money to buy the souvenirs.

    • When I was a backpacker the most expensive meal I had in the country was a doner kebab.

      • We wrapped some smoked cheese in a breadroll and that's our lunch for that few days. That was before the time smoked cheese is a thing in Australia. :)

    • +2

I had fast food there recently and it was like $25 AUD per person. It wasn't even anything fancy.

    • I drove from Germany, I packed the car full of essential, nice drive tho. Somehow NZ always remind me of Switzerland in a small scale but cheaper.

      • That's a true comparison. In 2019 we were in the Japanese alpine region and it also reminded me of Switzerland.

    • Things have changed over 20 years! The difference between food in cheap stores and restaurants where you pay to the waiter at the table has widened.
Look at it in terms of value for money. Once you get over the limited shopping on Sunday it is clean and yes a bit upmarket. Fixed pricing, very annoying if you order coffee to drink black and they charge you for cream and sugar and then throw it away. In the Italian speaking part you will find Italian culture with cheaper espressi.

  • Beyond frustrating. Looking for cheap fares that leave Adelaide end Nov/early Dec for EU. Just a bad time.

    • +1

That’s peak time hence why there’s minimal deals.

  • +2

Non of the date ranges are excellent to visit as it's winter or early spring(Unless you want to see snow everywhere). Country will be just returning from Winter stress and won't be back to it's true beauty. Worth paying few extra hundred or so and get a ticket at least May departure.

    • Couldn't agree more ! I went end of May and Europe was simply magical !!

  • going to any where in europe right now isn't a good idea. Not because of covid but because of the tentions currently between Nato and Russia. Prices aren't as good as you think either.

    • If Russia enters conflict with NATO there's no point worrying about this because we'll all be nuked lol. Not that Russia is in any position to go beyond Ukraine. We have to live our lives like this isn't a possibility.

      • yeah Ukraine is just a battlefield for both Russia and Nato/U.S we all know its really a war by proxy.

      • +1

Too crowed there, they will be glad if 1 less goes there.
Obama handed out cash to ferals to overthrow the right wing govt of the Ukraine.
Putin took the verbal promise. Too bad he got taken for a ride. I am not a Putin fan but a suit is a suit and the ruler of the most populous country is wearing a suit. It is what it is!

  • Anyone want to look after my kids while I go? They apparently need to attend school at this time, but otherwise are fairly low maintenance

    • Reminds me of the parrot ad.

“Parrot for sale; likes children but will settle for cuttlefish and seed”.

    • just pull them out of school…

      • year 12, I'm told it creates issues if you dont turn up for a month. Not like in the good old days, when you just had to turn up for exams at the end of the year and condense 2 years of learning into a 3 hour exam to define the rest of your life

  • Is it better to rent out a car in switz?

    • +3

I've done that before and it wasn't particularly expensive. Public transport there is generally superb but having a car enables you to reach some of the more out of the way places.

    • Unless you are carting loads of gear their train system is something you must experience…

  • This pricing is epic. I am trying to buy a return flight starting ZRH-BNE on 22/07 with return next year sometime… it is like $4k. Absolute punish!! Is there any help you can give me with that IWTF??

  • Hi OP
Do you anticipate any deals to Dublin from mid March coming up soon?

  • -3

Why can’t the Unvaccinated travel? Excuse me? Discrimination.

    • Believe it or not! Switzerland lets un-vaccinated staff work at hospitals! It all comes at a cost. Make sure your travel insurance is ok the way you travel.

    • +1

Because they’re dirty and need to be kept away from the pure.

  • I imagine that flights to+from Zurich to UK are cheap too?

    • Easyjet fly there. Interestingly, Ryanair don't

  • any cancellation fees or changes?

    • +1

Most of these options are booking through a third party. Any flight changes or delays and you are screwed

  • I lost the link to I want that flight where I can pick a month or date from where I’m going and it gives you a map to all the destinations with price.

    Can someone help please?

  • +1

Hi, some of the options I look at on iwantthatflight only provide "SmartFares" as a booking option. I looked at ProductReview and found the worst reviews for them ever
    - https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/smart-fares - anyone any experience booking through them? Just wondering OP if these guys are that bad, should OP exclude them from your searches on iwantthatflight?
