Could a pair of these be used as the rear speakers with Sonos Beam Gen2 for atmos?

    • +3

I use them as rears for a Sonos arc

      • Do those Symfonisks have to be in a pair? Got my ray delivered today and one Symfonisk at home.

        • To be used as surrounds to work with your Ray, yes.

    • +2

      Yes, can do.

These operate identical to the Sonos One/ One SL models that most people have as rear surrounds. You can use these, or ones, or even a pair of Sonos 5s

    • yep. They don't provide a vertical channel, but there are any rears yet that do.

      • +8

        n’t

      • There was hopes that the Ray could be used that way, but it didn't happen.
        edit: Beam to Ray, doh

    • +4

Under the skin they are pretty much a Sonos Play1. This youtube video shows it's possible to use as the rears with a Sonos soundbar

RRP used to be $150 too

      • +1

Just checked my email for 2x I purchased in June 2020, they were in fact RRP $149 (marked down to $144 at the time)

Official answer from Sonos echoes the others here: https://support.sonos.com/s/article/4807?language=en_US

Sonos products that can be used as surround speakers
Only products of the same model can be used together as surround speakers. For example, two Sonos Ones can be used for surround sound but One and Play:1 cannot. However, related models like One and One SL can be used together as surround speakers.

One (all generations) and One SL
      Play:1
      Play:3
      Play:5 (Gen 2)
      Five

      In the product details section it states;
The speaker is a collaboration between IKEA and Sonos, so it easily integrates with other products from Sonos.
You can use two identical speakers as rear speakers for a Sonos home theatre system.

    • mate of mine does it with the beam. Works well.

    • yes, this is what i have done.

  • +14

Pretty sure this was the normal price. Then they bumped the price up to its current rrp.

    And hey look 'sale'.

I know because I bought two previously and wanted to buy another one.

    • Thoughts on it? Planning to leave it permanently outside in our alfresco

      • +1

I have a bunch of these around the house set up as stereo pairs, as well as a pair used as rear surround speakers in our lounge with a Beam and sub.
I have a set on our back deck and they've been great. So long as they're protected from the elements, you'll have no problems.

      • I love mine tbh. It's cheap and cheerful. Sounds and bass is fine.

    • -1

It's been the price for the last month or so, but $199 was the real price before that.

      • +8

They were $149 when they first came out and stayed at that price until recently.

  • No stock in QLD
Looks like end of line clearance.

    • Maybe? The white speakers are not even showing up at all for me. I have a few and wanted to add another.
I think they are going for the picture frame only ones now.

      • See below for comment from Jemlan
        First gen run outs.

        2nd gen likely coming soon

  • Do these work from within the sonos app?

    • Yes

    • In the product details section it states;
You control the speaker with the Sonos app.
Download Sonos app via Google Play or App Store, depending on which mobile device you have.

Accidentally turned one of these on in the IKEA store a few weeks back. They are L O U D.

  • Also the table lamp speaker is on sale for $169 which is a better deal imo

    • Yeah that lamp sounds much better than these speakers. It’s bloody huge though!

    • Showing $269 for me?

    • Link? Shows as $269 for me.

      • +1

JFYI, there's a newer 2021 model of the lamp speaker already out in the States. The one on IKEA AU is the 2019 model.

Also the 2019 model doesn't have Bluetooth connectivity.

      • In store only. just got one from North lakes store

      • +1

I think that's the price for the lamp, the lamp isn't on sale

        https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/symfonisk-table-lamp-with-wifi-…

    • The price of the table lamp speaker is still marked at $269 at Ikea Marsden Park. I don't think it is on sales.

  • This can’t be used as pc speaker right?

    • +1

No, these are streaming/sonos app for input. They have no hardware inputs.

    • +2

      For PC I doubt it

On mac however you can use airplay. I use mine daily for youtube on my laptop with all sounds coming from the symphonisk (including system sounds and notifications)

    • +1

There are technically 2 ways to do it.
The first way is to create a stream and send it to the Sonos system. There's an off the shelf app that can do this. It is laggy and bad.
Second way would be to get a Beam or Arc, hook it up to a TV, use these as surrounds, use TV as your monitor.

      • Is this the app you used? https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stream-computer-audio-output-s…

I’ve used it occasionally to pipe audio from a webcast meeting through my Sonos network.

        • I didn't try that one, I used this one: http://www.tuneblade.com/
At the time, it was really delayed. Would be fine for music, but bad for movies/games/etc.
I just use my TV as a monitor and hook the Arc up to the eARC port of the TV.

    • +1

It is possible, get a Sonos Connect—but might cost you more than the actual speaker.

      • I didn't know you could use the Sonos Connect like that, I figured it was just legacy hardware for doing legacy things.

        • Nope, those manufactured 2017 onwards works with the S2 app.

Those are the ones with the play/pause button on top instead of the mute button

        • I have that to connect my Logitech Z906 together with my other sonos speakers.

  • Anyone got these to work through Home Assistant?

    • +1

I've added them in Home Assistant no worries. Haven't done anything with them yet. They turn on and up and down for me via a Logitech Harmony so a little separate.

    • +1

Yes, I mostly use a Node-RED flow with an Aqara cube to control it. Pause/Play, next track, last track, volume. You can have it play specific songs and playlists also, but I don't really do that.

  • +1

It sucks that the stands for these are $40 EACH

    • +1

they used to be 30 and were rarely in stock. Now they jacked the price and increased supply.

    • +3

      I wouldn’t stand for that.

    • +4

That doesn't actually answer the most important questions for most people, I would have thought:

      1. Do you HAVE to use the stupid Sonos app to use this on a non-Apple device?

      2. Does this integrate with Google Home, Alexa, etc?

      • After setup you don't HAVE to use the Sonos App, there's at least Spotify that can connect to the speakers very easily. You cannot use YouTube Music directly to Sonos speakers from the YouTube Music app like you can with Spotify.

I disliked the Sonos app at first, but it isn't too bad after getting a hang of it. I can add multiple music streaming services and local network PC's music libraries, that is nice.

They do integrate with Google Home and Amazon Alexa, poorly.
But really that's the Voice Assistant's fault, they can play music that your voice assistant will allow you to.
Like you can't play YouTube Music using an Amazon Alexa.
Anything your voice assistant devices can play, it will play.

Big issue that you might not think of immediately: you cannot group other brands or types of speakers with Sonos speakers. Which is painful unless you want to get a whole system for your whole house.

edit, list of apps that can directly stream to Sonos system from their (non-iOS) app:
Services that support direct control on Sonos
        Amazon Music*
        Audible
        IDAGIO
        iHeartRadio
        Pandora
        Spotify
        TIDAL
*The Sonos skill must be enabled in the Alexa app to stream to voice-enabled Sonos products.

        • +1

Thanks, that's very helpful. Sounds like a non-starter for me with crap Google integration, unfortunately. I remember that putting me off Sonos in the past - they strike me as having an Apple-style approach to hardware which really requires you to commit to their ecosystem.

  • +2

Currently using these with Sonos beam and sonos sub.

    No complaints!

  • +6

Heads up that these are the 1st gen model.
Second gen is already out overseas. Imagine they are clearing old stock.

Changes in 2nd gen (as per The Verge https://www.theverge.com/2022/1/7/22872141/ikea-sonos-second…):
Tweakers reports that Ikea’s made some internal changes, though, adding a faster processor, more memory, and lowering power consumption when in standby mode. It’s also added a longer power cable, which should be helpful for anyone trying to mount them in awkwardly wired rooms.

But the biggest change (biggest being a relative term here) is the buttons, where Ikea has lightly updated the layout from the first-generation model, swapping the volume up and play / pause buttons so that the two volume buttons are now next to each other.

    • +2

That button swap is a game changer.

    • +2

mine is propped up high on the shelf with other coffeetable books - everything is remotely controlled via my mobile, so the hardware buttons don't really make a difference. Aside from pressing the buttons for the initial setup, I don't think i've ever used those buttons for control. if they updated the sonos hardware for better audio quality - now thats a gamechanger.

  • +1

I use one of the lamps with my Apple tv, the only downside being I can't set it as the default speaker (cause Apple want money for their Homepod I guess).

  • +1

    No 3.5mm jack. 👎

  • Can I put these behind the sofa and have it aimed at the backwall half a meter away? would reflecting the sound off the backwall work? that would save me having to mount them on the wall and also be hidden.

    • +5

That is likely to produce pretty crummy sound. Sound waves exit speaker, hit wall, reflect and constructively/destructively interfere with the sound coming directly from the speakers.

  • Limited stocks available in most Vic stores

  • Dumb question, do these have Bluetooth?

    • No bluetooth for these ones.

  • Adelaide: Tried to buy 4, tried both C&C and delivery: Sorry, some of the products in your bag are unavailable for Collect from store to your selected location.
    Tried 1, same thing.

  • +3

FYI, you can also use these to connect/hack a non-sonos sub with a sonos soundbar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiPPPu7j5DM

  • +1

does click and collect cost $5?

  • For those that live near ikea, check the as is section!
I wasn't planning to buy one, but there were two on sale for $70 each, so I had to buy them!

    • those are 2nd hand technically, has it been opened?

      • Yep, second hand

      • Or display stock.

  • +1

Just used code QREWbK$Y5b for click n collect. Put through one speak per order x2. Works out to be $134 each.

  • i don't recall ever paying $199 rrp for these - but yes, otherwise, they make great speakers for ambient music.

  • +2

I have one of these and it was good.. when it worked. It unfortunately only works via WiFi and you need to use the SONOS app.

Ever since updates from a few months ago, it has stopped connecting and I've essentially got a deadweight sitting there.

    • I bought mine 3 years ago, and I have no connectivity issues. Everything is up to date apps/firmware etc

    • +1

I had connectivity issues for about two months.

Sonos support said it was a known issue with my router (Asus).

Sadly didn’t get any use out of it for those months then suddenly last week it started working again. Sonos must have solved the issue. Happy days

      • +1

Funnily enough, I gave it another crack last night after seeing this post and after a few months of being useless, it's now working again! I think you're right, they must've fixed whatever issue caused it in the past.

  • I use these speakers as rear surrounds for my Sonos Beam.

  • Was just about to buy a pair, but they are only available in black? What happened to the white variant?

    • This is a run out of stock before they launch gen 2.

  • Can you hook up 2 in stereo?
    Add a sub?

    • I have 2 as stereo, Sonas arc and Sonos sub. So yes.

  • all i need now is the sub and my setup is complete…more to save
