Half of the things I buy off this site are like that.
Only half?
I don't just want the KFC, I need it.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh… trying to hodl for Zen 4
To be fair, unless you need the extra performance then this is more than capable of most work and gaming purposes
Yeah and so is a 150 dollar CPU lol
roblox on a 720p monitor sure
@THX: I mean the 12100F is about $155 at ccpu, and it's a very capable chip. 🤷♀️
@THX: clearly, you have not heard of the 12100f
@THX: Even my i5 750 says otherwise.
@Ulysses31: I'm just Gunna keep letting this guy think he needs a 12 core cpu for Roblox lol
That is true but the IPC uplift on Zen 4 is enticing. Definitely will be greater for gaming and compute purposes. Also getting an AM5 socket will be future proofing myself rather than purchasing a CPU at the end of it's platform life.
This is the biggest factor imo. Buying 5000 series this close to EOL of the socket is a waste, especially when the 6000 CPUs are just around the corner.
@reloxation: But I dunno, how often do you upgrade your CPU? It might not matter for many. If I buy a 5900X or 5950X now I don't imagine upgrading it for 4-5 years. Which means, a new socket anyway.
@MissKitty: AM4 lasted 6 years and Zen 3 works on Gen 1 motherboards which is incredible.
Also, competition is heating up so I don't expect the coming years to have low performance uplifts because of this. It is no longer the stagnant Intel era.@MissKitty: Resale value is also something to consider. As Skele-Cr said, AM4 socket lasted 6. I'd probably upgrade every 4 gens, so waiting for the new socket before buying makes sense.
@reloxation: if you are currently using i7-6700K like me after god knows how many years , last thing on the planet you think is 6000 being released tomorrow or not …lol.. i was waiting for such a deal , i never buy CPU second hand while too risky! and retailer refurbished are rip off (at least in my experience).
just tossing the coin now to get this or wait for a refurbished with warranty! What's your thoughts on that?
Also considering they'll need DDR5, PCIE5 storage would be available (but obviously 3/4/5 works as is) and other great features, if you don't have any parts right now you might as well wait.
If you need an upgrade now, this'll probably be the last release for this socket, but probably a lot on the used market coming.
Zen4 !!! IPC ONLY !!! - is looking to be anywhere between 6% to 40% *IPC heavily dependent on application and game VS Zen3 :) overall its going to be a good match vs intel tiger lake at end of this year due to very high clock speeds of 5.5Ghz from both intel and AMD :).. that means we all get well priced fast CPU's
"unless you need something faster, this is fast enough" thanks for the insight 😜
hehehe
Zen 4 wont be cheap at all to get into since it will only support DDR5 and we all know how much a rip off they are right now.
Yep, my thoughts exactly. Unsure whether to bite the bullet and get a Ryzen 5000 series or wait and get the 6000 series, but the cost of DDR5 RAM hurts my wallet to think about.
If you can wait 3 years, wait - no brainer. If you can wait 2 years, it is really hard to guess what prices will be like. If you can wait 1 year, just buy the 5000 series now - doubly so if you have an AM4 motherboard already.
@ColPow11: Currently running a Ryzen 5 1600 + GTX 1070 and they've served me well for 5 years. I do want to upgrade, but I suppose it's more a want rather than a need. As you've said, who knows what prices will be like 1-2 years from now.
Side note, thoughts on El Plan? A bit sad they're not doing as well as I would've liked, but I think they've had some decent showings (Nando was looking fast on his Q3 hotlap in Melb, until he binned it)
@Kappaccino: Check the latest Youtube video by hardwareunboxed. They answer your exact question - a 1600 upgrading to a 5600. I don't even think you'd need to do the GFX card, just drop a 5600 in to the same motherboard you've got.
@ColPow11: Yeah, coincidentally I happened to watch the video earlier today. Definitely very tempting.
@Kappaccino: El Plan is in full effect. Alonso 2022 World Champ, just starting their run a little late to get better odds at the bookies.

Do it, for sure. More single core will count a lot.
this is cheaper then buying am4 mobo cpu and ddr5 :)
Needs help! Should I get this or 12700K for a similar price?
Depends on your use case. As usual, for gaming go Intel, productivity AMD.
If we're gonna generalise, the 12700k is faster for "productivity" as well. Sure the 5900x can be faster in some cases but it's not just a matter of multi threaded vs single threaded heavy tasks. It depends on specifically what software you use.
Main advantage with this is you can use a cheap B550 board with good VRM like the b550m mortar ($156 Amazon), whereas you are looking about $70 more for a decent B660 or Z690
Intel is sticking to it's 2 generation socket strategy. Socket 1700 for 12th gen Alder Lake this year and 13th gen Raptor Lake next year then a new socket 1800+.
If AM5 can promise to last more than 2 years and DDR5 drops rapidly I'd wait for it if you're desperate.I just want a large multicore, multi-threaded CPU for VM's and productivity that takes cheap(ish) RAM. I would jump all over the 12700K if I knew it had a future upgrade path!
I hope I am wrong!
New record?
to think I paid $500 for my 5600x
I think I paid over $750 for my 5900x
I paid more than $600 for my 5900x a few months back but then I also sold my 5800X for $400 so it depends on what you are upgrading from, just like with GPUs.
Are the 5600g or 5700g on sale? Need cpu with integrated graphic.
The 5600G seems to have more deals but neither have active deals at the moment. I have a few 5600G builds going but could never justify the price premium for a 5700G. Also my 5900X build from last Oct I think I paid around 899 for the CPU.
until you're looking at >$1000 and get destroyed on ddr5 pricing
The top of the line processor when it was released November 2020.
Get your facts straight Mr hysteria.
It's a good price for a competent CPU but I can't help but partially agree - there will be a 12 core AMD part for like $800 (ouch) in 4 months but it should be in theory, at least 15% faster single core and I suspect the multicore much more.
Same price as last month.
Come on, you can get it down to $499 boys !
such a good price. productivity is becoming more of a use case for me and this is tempting
Tempting!
Where's the 5950x deals :(
It's a great CPU, it caused me a couple of issues in the first few weeks with constant crashes, which quiet alot of people end up experiencing if you look at a few forums.
It took a bit of bios tweaking to get it to work with my current rig, just be aware.
As of right now it's running without any crashes for 2 months or so.is there a reason to get this over the i7-12700k?
if you have an am4 mobo
Any deals on 5950X? =D
Woohoo, pulled the trigger on one.
Upgrading from a ryzen 5 3600 with a 6900xt.
This should do me for 4-5 years before the next big upgradecongrats!
I don't need it, but I want it.
