  • Legit question, are these scales really worth it over $20-30 Amazon coffee scales?

    • I've been using cheap amazon scales for about a year. they've got a lot of coffee in the nooks and crannies that I can't clean off, I'd like to try to get a consistent flow rate/timing between each shot (at the moment they're all different) and I'd like something waterproof too.

they definitely do the job, but this is a good option if you want the extra features in a small scale without paying the ridiculous asking price of the acaia.

      • I'd say a Xiaomi Hoto scale would be a good compromise

        https://au-m.banggood.com/HOTO-Smart-Bluetooth-Electronic-Ki…

It has a coffee mode in the Mijia app, so it is similar to Acacia.

I've tried one before, the lag is IMMENSE.

        • Acaia has a very high refresh rate and little lag, so you can cut a pour or shot at precisely the weight you want.. most other kitchen scales that are primarily for the kitchen have so much lag that it makes them impractical for coffee.

          • @simulacrum: Yes most scales are terrible for pour over. .

I am an original backer on Kickstarter back in 2013 or 2014 of the Acaia scale and it's still going strong (apart from one instance where the firmware corrupted and had to reflash it with the help of Acaia support). They are great scales if you are apour over person.

I use a top of the range Salter scale for tracking macros and if I am doing a batch brew on the Moccamaster, will just utilise the Salter.scales, to save getting the Acaia out of the cupboard - and for this purpose any scale will be fine. I have used them for pour overs and they are not too bad.

I would be interested in testing the Xiaomi scale out at some point to see how well it does for pour overs.

            • @Thatbargainhunter: Good to have minimal lag for espresso too. I’ve read here and there that the xiaomi ones are laggy (@frowny confirmed above). Have a brewista scale myself.. which does the job, but doesn’t look that nice… might have to consider an upgrade to something a bit more schmick looking at some point.

I've used a $22 cheap one from amazon and it does the job. I don't think $100+ just for scales is worth it tbh.

    • I don’t think so.

If it is just weighing beans then the $20-30 scales are easily adequate for that. I purchased the non-nano version of this and the response time for the weight while I'm doing a pour over or a shot is noticeably better.

It's hard to fine a quality scale for less than $100 which matches the response time, if you have found one than I wouldn't recommend upgrading

      • Yeah response time is not great which doesn't help for pulling espressos. Hopefully the new set I ordered is better because my setup only allows tiny scales like the acia lunar and I'm not spending that much lol

    • I think this is aimed squarely at would be Acaia Luna owners…different beast from those little cheap coffee scales.

I have a cheap scale like those you mention, but I don't think I'd want to put it under the brewhead. I have the Black Mirror also, and I do use it under the brewhead, but it is a tad too big and coarse for espresso (more of a pourover scale).

    • yes

  • For a commercial operation. Yes.

For home use - likely not.

    Timemore are excellent quality however

This however, is not an alternative to the acaia scale,.as it's not a smart scale without the Bluetooth.

The Bluetooth version is also only in Chinese and the App runs through WeChat I believe.

I use $15 scale from ebay to weigh my beans and output when dialing. Also have 0.1 accuracy. Does the job for me.

    • Yup, the cheap 0.1g accuracy scales are also significantly slimmer than any of the purpose built coffee scales. Some come with a little transparent cover that I use as a dosing cup for beans. Can't really see the point in upgrading to something ten times more expensive just to time shots.

      • Not necessarily to time shots but to cut a shot off at the precise weight you’re aiming for. Most cheaper scales have huge lag so you might think you’re cutting a shot at 42g but it might actually keep refreshing after you stop the shot and eventually come to rest at, say 55g.

Don't want to be that guy, but you can get this direct on aliexpress - obviously you may wait a bit longer for shipping.

I bought this last month via AliExpress took 2 weeks to arrive

      • Yeah i bought the non nano for 60 bucks or so, and also took around 2 weeks.

    • Oh thanks. I saw the aliexpress one but wasn't sure if it was legit or not. Good to know. What's the returns/warranty process like if there is a fault?

      • not promoting Aliexpress as i had some bad experience with stores going missing after an order was place, partly my fault as the store had no purchase history, no followers and no reviews
Timemore looks likes it has an official store
        https://www.aliexpress.com/store/912502797

If anything i would use this one over any of the stores and i would read all the reviews first before ordering.

    • True - but its not that much cheaper.
Ali Express after tax is like 130 - so for around 20$ you get AU stock that will ship fast and local support/warranty. I personally think thats probably worth the premium.

    • Paid $127 on Aliexpress and received it in 10 days. At the time the Timemore official store wasn't dispatching this particular model to Australia. That's about $30 cheaper than this deal with shipping, but was $45 from the best deal I could find at the time.

I purchased the non nano Timemore for $55AUD + cashback off AliExpress and they arrived in 2 weeks. Pretty happy with them and they are low profile enough to fit under a portafilter on most espresso machines.

They are very compact and relatively thin. (Much thinner than acaia pearl). Pretty good middle ground between cheap $20-30 scales and high end precision scales.

Perfect for single dose grinding for espresso, weighing and timing shots, as well as pour overs.

    • The Pearl is a chunky boi that's for sure.

Wot if a coffee scale but sentient and racist

  • I recently got the Nano after years running the original Black Mirror at home, and a set of cheap druggy scales for my work coffee kit. Really impressed.

It's way more premium feeling (more metal and less plastic than the original), very responsive and the side switches are a great upgrade.

I'd been expecting to use it for espresso only given the size. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is just large enough to fit a V60 carafe and the slanted screen makes it still readable. It's leagues ahead of other scales in this price range, and I couldn't personally justify the additional features and cost of an Acaia.
