It's no recent $999 Ideapad Gaming deal, but with this you get a superior screen and a 3060 that isn't gimped. And you don't need to be a student and all that.

    • It's also more expensive on the student site at the moment, and you don't get cashback.

  • Should I buy this now or wait for another sale or get the pro? I have access to education store. Just need a laptop for light gaming.

    • There probably will be more deals as we move closer to EOFY, how desperately do you need it?

      • No hurry haha, will hold off the gaming urges for now.

The legion 7 plus watch for 2.8k is also an incredible price hasn't been that cheap in ages.

Would be a killer price a year ago but in mid 2022? Nah sorry just no.

same price 11 months ago only difference in config is fhd 165hz instead of QHD-that deal also include 80wh battery and 1yr premium support-but this doesn’t cover the one year difference - remember this screen is no l5p panel with hdr400 or 16:10 and doesn’t get exactly amazing color coverage neither.

On ebay right now with the coupon, 5800h+130w 3060+240hz gigabyte a5 can be had for ~1530$, 11800h+130w 3060+240hz aorus 15p for ~ 1710$, yes they dont have mux switch, but at the same time you can use extra money saved to get an external monitor. Trust me once you used an external monitor no good panel on the laptop will bring you back. And im speaking from experience here.

    Also consider infinity w5 12700h/140w 3060/mux/2k165hz for 2150 with coupon, tuf a15 6800h/mux/140w 3060 for 2050$ with coupon. Dell g15 12700h/130w 3060/165hz/mux for 2020$ with coupon.

The deals are there be found as soon as one realise that:

    • while machines come with screens not as good or some machines dont have mux, this is one of the few things on a laptop thats easily ‘upgraded’ with the purchase of an external monitor down the line.

    • for not much more you can get a newer gen machine, 6000 series have killer battery improvements (even over 5000 series) + rdna 2 and 12th series is a portable powerhouse (in ways more than one of course)

    • Legion 5 is no legion 5 pro, it doesn’t get two of the best things a l5p have over the competitors - 16:10 bright panel and vapor chamber (better thermals and less noise)

    • Worth noting that some laptops, like the Ideapad Gaming, don't disable Optimus even when plugged into an external monitor. I assume the Gigabyte definitely does?

      • For certain. In fact, most gaming laptops hdmi/dp port should be connected directly to the dgpu unless the absolute budget ones.

On that note, are you sure you are not mistaken about Optimus not disabled? Jarrods review of the 2020 model had the HDMI port connected directly to the dgpu, and I dont see why lenovo would intentionally gut that from the 2021 machine unless they are really going the cost saving route.

        • Yeah, still comes up as the AMD card even when connected and can't enable any of the options in the nvidia control panel regardless. It's like they hard wired it to the AMD iGPU.

          • @cnut: Ah damn thats no good, I had a search online and yeah ur right thats just how it is this year and no bios update will fix it. A shame because the ideapads are otherwise decent all round budget gaming laptops. Hope lenovo fix it in this year model. Jarrod havent reviewed an ideapad for 21 maybe he will do one for this year and we will know how the display out ports are wired.

        • Can confirm HDMI port doesn’t connect to dgpu. Definitely sucks that Lenovo did this, but guess it pushes people to the more expensive Legion series. Would definitely not recommend the Ideapad Gaming laptop at MSRP.

Though, for the $999 deal (with 5600H, RTX3060 and 16gb single channel, but easy to upgrade to dual for cheap), it’s way easier to excuse it. In more graphics intensive games, the lack of mux switch doesn’t have too big of an impact. Main impact is when you’re reaching higher fps.

I would personally take the $999 Ideapad over this in a heartbeat. Even including cash back, $1,700 is a lot to pay for the Legion’s specs. It’s almost double the Ideapad. At this price range, you might even be able find an RTX3070 laptop on discount for not much more.

          • @SleepyBargainHunter: I agree. No regrets about the Ideapad, even with the unnecessarily gimped design.

    • Btw only the legion 7 and newest legion 5 pros have vapour chambers not the last gen.

      • ah gotcha my bad. lenovo must have worked something else between the two then, maybe bigger fin areas or fan blade designs. because the 5pro can take a 140w 3070 while the 5 can only take 130w at a hotter temp.

Bad idea compromising on screen. There is no way you're carrying a monitor around if you use your machine anywhere but home. And if you're using it at home I'd argue you're better off with a desktop.

I went away to my in laws for Christmas and the first thing that hit me when I got back to my desktop was that the colours weren't muted.

Prices are not worth it during this sale period. It was much better with the previous Cashrewards bargain 2 months ago, 20% site wide code and 10% cashback.

    I got my legion 7i 2021 with the 11800H and rtx 3080 165watt 16gb vram GPU for only 2.8k.
14,100 cinnebench r23 multi score and 13,000 3Dmark timespy graphics score at 2k resolution.

    • Really? Wow, that’s a killer deal. RTX3080 laptop under 3k
