Do I have to buy 99 bikes to get 20% off?

    • +32

You got 99 problems but common sense ain't one

      • +14

Actually, I’d say this company has 99 problems, and their discounts are therefore too little. Presumably their business boomed during the height of the pandemic, due to lifestyle changes. They stocked up on everything excessively and wrongfully assuming the lockdowns would go longer than expected. They likely refused to discount back then as demand was so high. Now the tables have turned and it’s back to the real world with an overflowing inventory. So I’ll pass until they beg me to buy with a much higher discount.

        • +3

On the one hand yes, but this was not just exclusive to 99 Bikes. Plus, having just bought a new pair of clipless pedals and shoes, 99 Bikes’ 5% price beat against Pushy’s and MTB Direct had them to be the cheapest by far. At the end of the day, if I can save $$ going with 99 Bikes over another retailer, I will.

On the other hand, 99 Bikes absolutely loves using Couriers Please and FML they are literally lower than dog shit. If the price is a few dollars here and there I’d go elsewhere just to avoid that slimy little worm of a delivery company.

          • @Pelicannn: I suppose YMMV w.r.t. courier. Ordered a car bike carrier yesterday morning shipped to WA - it was dispatched a couple of hours later with TNT.

            • @lasertip: interesting… I am also in WA. Two of my orders have come through with Couriers Please, yesterday I ordered something and it is being sent Australia Post. You've got TNT… seems they just go with whatever is cheapest I suppose.

      • 99 + 1

    • I went into one of their stores the other day and I’m pretty certain there was more than 99 bikes in there 🧐

    • Just buy 79.2

    No delivery to QLD?

  • +30

Yeah, be careful with their prices, do your research first. Their accessories at 20% off "FULL PRICE" can often just be the same as club price. More often then not, if you're planning on buying a lot, just pay for the 6 month Club Gold membership for 35 bucks and you'll save significantly more than what you'll pay for the item "On sale"

For example: Moon X-Power Trail light: full price 399, Club price 299. So 25% off is 299 which is the same as club, but if you go for club gold, it's 269, which is even cheaper. Add a couple more items to that and the "biggest sale" is completely worthless compared to club/gold price.

    • So their club gold price is available any time and not bad on sale price?

      • +4

It's 35 dollars for a 6 month membership, which either reverts back to the lifetime club membership or can be renewed for 20 dollars every six months.

The trick is if you plan on making a large purchase (either a lot of accessories or a bike) pay for the gold for the extra discount, buy everything you need for cheap, then let it run out. There's no point constantly renewing it unless you're marking large purchases regularly

As per my light example, the 35 dollar joining fee practically pays for itself once you add a few more items.

For another example, something like the Pedal Maverick: 1099.99 full price, less 25%, is about 825. Or you can get it for 805 club/758 Club Gold (assuming you haven't paid for either club or club Gold before you make the initial purchase.

And half the time if you plan on getting some accessories on top of a bike purchase, the salespeople will easily waive the club price, because frankly 99 Bikes employees will do anything for a sale. That's the kind of store culture they have. So just ask for a better price and nine times out of ten you'll get it.

        • Yep, can totally vouch your experience (Kew store) - super friendly, waived the club price and the guy price matched a more expensive item (different paint job) with a lesser priced identical model.

      • I am a gold member, can confirm most of the time it’s cheaper to pay the $35 to access gold pricing, irrespective of the sale they have because the prices don’t stack. (As long as you’re spending more than ~$350 online as that further 10% off club price then pays for Gold as well.

It’s a shame they apply the 20% off in cart because that means you can’t stack the Club or Gold price against the discount on RRP.

20% off Retail, then 5% off Club Price on that and 10% off Gold Price on that would have been the dream (about 31.5% discount) but sadly no.

      Holy cow! For a light!

Supercheap auto are currently doing a 5 LED headtorch for $3 (and the light it produces is amazing).

      • Ahh… the Australia + COVID + Hobby Tax strikes again

      • +7

Those trail lights are specialised, so no, it's not the same as a 3 dollar torch… It's 2500 Lumens of shaped light, for starters, not the uh… 80 Lumens of the 3 dollar torch, which is a COB LED, so it basically just blasts its 80 Lumens out in all directions without any kind of lens to direct the light.

That headlamp might be "amazing" when you're lighting up a room a few feet from your face, not so good if you're trying to see the road or trail several hundred metres in front of you.

        • -3

          2500 lumens…hmmm.
I happily ride trails at night with the older model of the $3 torch (i paid $10 and it lights up plenty). But suit yourself.

          • @tunzafun001: I assume by trails you mean dirt roads.

            • -1

@TheRealCJ: Nah, I've got designated mountain bike trails out the back. Kangaroos, the works on the tracks.
In fairness I have seen a few riders with what I assume are these lights, and I thought an aircraft was coming towards me.
To be honest, I'd break it in no time and be shattered at this price. I'm happy with the head torch and sometimes a Cree XML mounted on the bike.

              • +1

@tunzafun001: I guarantee you that your torch blinds them more than their trail lights blind you. Bike lights are shaped beams

Be nice if their stock checker was reliable.

  • Does anyone have any thoughts on this for my wife and I to share for a daily commute of approximately 15 km on flat roads and paths? https://www.99bikes.com.au/pedal-lightning-electric-hybrid-b…

      • 24-hours limit for voting negative on comments is currently capped at 5. So I couldn't help you anymore.

    • +1

Pedal is something of a house brand. Not necessarily a bad thing. Shimano tourney components are a bit on the basic side. Not sure exactly what hub motor is being used, this review says that bafang rear hub motors are okay but they may have nylon gears which will wear over time. https://www.ebikechoices.com/bafang-hub-motor-review/

If we are talking 15 ks each way for a daily commute, not sure this would be my first choice. You might want better components to handle distances like that

      • Thanks for the advice!

  • -2

Installed pedals incorrectly and almost killed me, good luck

    • -2

      It’s someone else’s fault.

      • +1

        They did

        • +1

          Still my fault??

    • +2

Was looking at a bike in their display rack and something wasn't quite right, then realised they'd installed the forks backwards¿ If I hadn't pointed it out hopefully the staff wouldve picked it up before someone rode off into the traffic!

  • Bought heaps of stuff from these guys including an cube ebike.

They really look after you on price if you do some friendly haggling.

There are also 15% off gift cards (Ultimate ones) from woolies and Coles that come up occasionally. They are more then happy to accept multiples when paying.

  • Is that the best shop to buy an eBike in Aus? (Any recommendations for mountain bike focused on performance?)

    • +2

Depending where you are, there are some really good shops that specialise in mountain bikes. There you will find a lot more E Bike options as 99 Bikes E-MTB options are limited to Merida, Cube and Norco

Brisbane I’d recommend For The Riders.
      Sydney I’d recommend Cranks.
Perth I’d recommend Kalamunda or Empire.

That being said, Merida really pioneered the E Bike to popularity in design aesthetic and they are a good bike. In the early days they were exceptionally priced too, my mate picked up an eOneSixty with top tier goodies like fox factory and wireless XT shifting for a bit over 5k brand new (the retail was 8k so it was discounted). These days Merida have bumped up their prices drastically such that the same spec model is now over 14k retail.

Norco and Cube are also fine brands. At the other shops expect to find brands like Giant, Pivot, Trek, Rocky Mountain, all the way up to Santa Cruz, Specialized and Yeti (take out a second mortgage on your house for those).

It really depends on your budget though. E-MTB can get very expensive real quick. For one that I’d be willing to thrown down your average blue run I’d not be paying less than about $5,000.

      • +2

Thanks, you've ruined my $1,500 eMTB dream

        • I can offer you a $1,499 pushy and a $1 pokemon card to tape between the spokes for that authentic motor sound.

      • +1

tl;dr If you have a budget always go: Hardtail > HT Carbon > Dual > Dual Carbon > EBike. Dollar for dollar, a hardtail will have much better components over a dual suspension, and much better components over an eMTB. These better components will last longer, and be more durable such that the enjoyment of riding is not interrupted by constant parts failing and servicing to get back on. If you aren't in need of a dual suspension and just want a good bike that will hit the trails I would recommend a hard tail. You'll be surprised at the abuse they can take as well, especially if it has better components all round.

The longer example (and ack some of these bikes span XC and Trail categories), in the $5,000 bracket:

Things to note when it comes to drivetrain and brakes:

        Shimano - Deore < SLX < XT < XTR
        SRAM - SX < NX < GX < XO < XX

When it comes to forks, generally Fox and RockShox are on par with minute differences across the range. Marzocchi and Suntour make forks and shocks on a lower tier that would slot in somewhere between below Fox and RockShox's lower tier, to their mid tier.

        eMTB - Merida eOne Forty 400 Electric - $5,199:
        * Alloy frame
        * 1x10 Shimano Deore drivetrain and brakes (generally the lowest tier available, SLX, XT and XTR above)
        * Suntour XCR34 fork (again lowest tier fork from a low tier fork brand, Suntour is not a very common brand in the premium segment. They make some good ones but not these)
        * Suntour RS-Edge Rear Shock (mid tier for Suntour but that would still be below the lower tiers of Fox or RockShox for me)
        * Aluminium wheels
        * Shimano EP8 motor (best bit of kit on the bike IMO, and thats where the majority of funds are going).

Dual Suspension Carbon - Norco Revolver 2 120 Dual Suspension MTB - $5,119:
        * Carbon frame
        * 1x12 SRAM NX drivetrain (second lowest tier, with GX, XO1, XX1 above)
        * SRAM Guide T brakes (their lowest tier with around 5 or 6 higher tiers available)
        * RockShox SID Select+ 120mm fork (Probably the best bit of kit on the bike)
        * RockShox Deluxe Select Shock (Middle ground rear shock)
        * Aluminium wheels

Summary - for the same price, you get a better drive train, better fork, and better shock, plus a carbon frame

Dual Suspension Aluminium - Merida One Sixty 700 - $4,413:
        * Alloy frame
        * 1x12 Shimano XT/SLX mix for drivetrain and brakes
        * Marzocchi Z1 (not as common as RockShox or Fox but an alright fork)
        * Fox Performance Float DPX2 (A very good and popular rear shock, defintiely better than the R/S Deluxe Select below)
        * Aluminium wheels

Summary - for $700 less you get again, much better drivetrain and brakes, a really good rear shock,

        Hard Tail - Merida Big Nine 7000 - $4,399:
        * Carbon frame
        * 1x12 Shimano XT drivetrain and brakes (premium tier, only bested by XTR)
        * Rockshox SID select 100mm fork (one of the best forks for the weight and performance)
        * Carbon wheels (easily worth $1000 on their own).

Summary - for the same price, you can get some of the best running gear and brakes, a great shock, carbon wheels and carbon frame.

Yakima frontloader roof top bike carrier for $239.
Paid $259 the other week from a different vendor and that was a good price already imo

    • Yes finally bought some

    • so the frontloader or the ProRide 598?

      • +2

        I have both…

I prefer the frontloader since it doesn't touch the frame but the wheel clamp can only go down to 20 inch and not wide enough for 27.5+ and fatbike tyres.

I use my 598 for my youngest byk M350 with 18 inch tyre and got the fatbike adapter for my son's fatboy 20.

the 2x frontloaders are permanently on the roof rack and can add the thule when needed.

        Hope this helps…

  • Found their after sales support and service really good which is the benefit of buying from a local store. I'm happy to pay a little bit more to these guys rather than an online warehouse.

  • +2

Thanks, been needing an ass saver for a while

  • Just bought 2 bikes totalling $1600 a couple weeks back :/

    • They have a 30 day return policy on bikes!

You should just be able to take them back provided you haven’t thrashed them, and swap them to a different model and pay the difference. So effectively you could get a free upgrade on a higher spec bike if it’s been discounted the same as what you paid full price.

      • Just checked, purchased them April 21st. It's been more than 30 days :(

        • +1

Actually, if you bought the gold membership, you have 60 days, not 30!

But only if you paid the $35 for gold membership!

          • @Pelicannn: OHH I did buy the gold membership! I'll check it out, thank you

            • +1

              @Zackeroo: You’re in luck!

              Have a read here.

If you need an excuse just tell them you’re really getting into it and wish you up spec’d from the start.

Which bikes did you buy if you don’t mind me asking? Perhaps I can recommend some to replace with that will cost the same or maybe get you a discount as you can swap it and get a refund of the difference as well.

              • @Pelicannn: Hey @toshjammi,

Can I ask your advice on winter rear for daily commute? I have been biking for 6 months now everyday, but it's getting more wet and cold :/

                • +1

@nomekop: Got any decent wet weather gear? If i am riding in the rain I wear my Macpac rain jacket, as for the pants I don't bother really because my legs are working hard enough to not get cold. That being said, I only mountain bike ride. For commuting a good pair of waterproof pants you could find at a camping store will work just as good as any bike riding gear IMO, and will probably end up cheaper. In terms of keeping warm, I also don't have that problem. Work my butt off up a hill and I am warm enough, and if it's that cold I won't go riding haha. I used to live in Canberra so I had plenty of weekends of not bothering because it was too cold and wet.

  • The twin pack Thule 598 is really good price!

  • can I get a decent adult bike for $500? I only ride maybe half a dozen times a year with the kids.

    • +1

Maybe a Polygon Premier for that price range (from bicycles online)

    • Depends on what type of bike and what you call decent.

Reid currently has the Transit Disc for $400. But keep in mind its an entry level hybrid/commuter.

    • Anaconda has a few on sale - some less than half price + under $500.

      • Would this be better than the pursuit I see 99bike have for $471?

        • Is the pursuit the road bike?
What type of riding will you be doing - do you want a road bike or mountain bike for riding around with the kids.

Also, check out the reviews - some bikes seem to have more issues than others.

  • Thule seems to get a bit of discount as well. usually its never discounted.

  • +1

Damn Merida Speeder 400 still not in stock, must be supply issues

  • Bit of a let down, both products were not available for delivery as they can't ship from their stores only the warehouse.

  • Can you guys recommend any bike racks for two bikes? (non tow bar)

    • Do you have roof racks already?

      • No roof racks unfortunately, was looking to get the boot mounted ones.

        • I'd look at the suction ones. Like these ones here. Don't be fooled by the suction cup stuff… I have never heard or seen a negative review of them coming off the car. Porsche even did a launch control and track day with bikes secured by the Tree Frog and not a single incident.

They are handy because they are very quick and easy to mount and dismount, so you don't need to leave racks on and ruin your fuel economy. Plus, less likely to damage your paint as the boot mounted ones have metal clips that attach to the boot lip and have no rubber protection on those parts of the mounts.

  • I can only see 20% off trailers, not 40%. Do you have a link to any trailers that are 40% off? Been wanting one for a while.
