What Will Happen if I Attempt to Cut The Security Tag?

Hi all,

I bought a pair of shoes from Anaconda and got home only to realise they left the security tag on. I really can't be bothered driving back (20 mins)…I was wondering if I could get through this with a pair of scissors or knife and what will happen if I attempt to do it. Is it one of those ink ones? Or do I really need to go back?

Cheers

Edit:

Sorry for the delay, here is the video, not very interesting 10/10 would steal again.

They look like those alarm triggers a high pitch/or alike.

Your shoes are dark, unless the ink is white, you’ll be fine /s.

    • +1

So if I cut it, I should smash it with a hammer or something then so it shuts up

      • +13

Maybe cut it off and drop it in a bucket of water…

        • There is a fair bit of clearance between the shoe and the tag. I would submerge the tag in a bucket of water as I try to cut it off.

      • +12

Sell the alarm on gumtree, bank transfer only and no pick up /s.

  • +136

you really should have paid for them

      sorry, lesson learned

    • Retail workers are definitely not paid nor trained well enough to always catch these.

I've bought a couple of Lego sets (while distracted myself herding my 3 kids) only to find an alarm unit like this on the box when I pull it out of the Target/bigw plastic shopping bag at home.

I just cut it and left the alarm in a bowl of water overnight.

        It's not rocket science? 🤔

But of course people make mistakes and miss them occasionally.

      • isn't the point of the devices that they sound an alarm if you try to take them out of the store? how are people taking them out? are they just fake deterrents?

        • They don't always sound the alarm, and also the alarms have a huge number of false positives.

          • @macrocephalic: Never stolen anything, but walked out of stores plenty of times and had an alarm go off, never been stopped tho. You cna lose your job accosting a thief these days

        • The sensors for the alarm are at the main door. It isnt unreasonable for this to have gone out the back since its being sent to the post office, and missed all the beeping altogether.

        • The Kmart near me - you go through self checkout and some of your stuff summons the self checkout assistant. Half the time they override the alarm without realising that it was a security device attached alarm and not an unrecognised item in bagging area weight sensor false alarm, or only remove one security tag when you multiple items. I’ve had to go back and get them to take a tag off a couple of times. It always seems wildly obvious stuff that they miss.

I’ve never had an alarm go off at the doorway. I’ve noticed when fishing out a receipt or something. The one item I got home without time to go back to the shops, I took it off with a pair of side cutters. No ink pack or audible alarm. I guess some percentage of them work and the rest of their value is as a psychology deterrent/ perceived pain in the ass thing rather than an actual real security product.

          • @SierraBMel: They're a very simple device, just a coil which creates a tuned induction loop I think. There's no cost reason to have ones that don't work, more likely that some are just broken, or the system isn't very accurate.

I can recall a customer setting of an alarm, and them complaining that it had been happening at every store. We went through and checked everything in their bag and the culprit was a coiled up phone extension cable that they had bought earlier. There was no tag on it, the coil of wire itself was setting off the alarms.

    • I actually once purchased some jeans from myer online (directly from their website). It was received via mail with a tag on it and i was annoyed but not enough contact them for a replacement as I cbf having to return it so i threw it in the bin.

From my perspective, it is possible to receive goods with a tag whilst purchasing it legally.

    Call them and ask?

    • +21

      where's the fun in that

      • +68

If you're after fun I say just wear them with the security tag on. It'll turn every outing you have into an adventure!

          • +6

@johninmelb: Interesting, dont't know why you got a million downvotes haha. So always cut out or remove any of those tags left on there.

            • -1

@lew380: Woman in the shop took all the tags etc off the wallet when I bought it. It didn't set off the alarm when I left the shop, just other shop's alarms!

As for the downvotes, no idea. Just idiots with nothing better to do with their time as usual. Nothing to lose sleep over.

              • @johninmelb: I feel.your pain. Happened to me for years. But it was extremely intermittent so I always thought it was a credit card or something setting it off lol

            • @lew380: i think its the slippery slope effect, once a post reaches a threshold of negative votes, it keeps going and going

  • Just cut it and see what happens. If ink spills all over them then take them back with the receipt and claim ignorance.

    • +2

      I'm semi-confident they don't contain ink…

    • +5

Claim ignorance on an ink stain that clearly says not to tamper with or such ink will stain??

      • +5

Yep. And when they ask about the receipt, "Yeah nah I must've had it in my jeans and I put them through the wash".

    • +1

It was the only pair in this size…and I kinda want them

    • +1

No idea why that's been neg'ed

  • +1

Doesnt look like an ink device to me but what do I know.

If it is, maybe hold over a sink by the shoe so the device dangles below and cut?

  • +9

Two options I can think of:
    1) run over it with the car tires and hope you can still use the shoes

    or Option two:

Clear tape, Zip lock bag, hammer, anvil and bucket of water are needed (okay lump of wood can be substituted for the anvil at home) and of course something to cut the tag end off.

    1) use the Zip lock the best you can to put the tag in it and tape up the openning.
    2) Using the hammer and anvil~ wood smash the tag as best you can
    3) Cut the end
    4) If it makes a sound then hit it again
    5) If you still cannot shut it up then drown it in the bucket and hope it dies quickly

    • +3

If you don’t own a hammer, block of wood/anvil and/or bucket, go and buy them from Bunnings which is next door to Anaconda. ;-)

    • You forgot to add "film it and stick it on youtube for internet points/advertising dollars"

  • +4

You must've gotten a blind salesperson to miss that. Lol

    • +1

Considering all of them have it on, I dont think you could miss it….

    • +1

Happened twice to me with online orders from Myer during lockdown. Apparently the staff we so busy, it was quite a common occurrence. Had to reorder item and send back the one with the tag.

      • +3

You should've been compensated with a gift card, standard policy in such instances

Just don't cut the red wire

    Source: movies

    • silver wire behind the red wire

    • +5

      I'm too old for this.

      • None of the kids got that. I chuckled.

      • Danny is that you?

  • +8

Best to take it back to the store and cut it in front of store security in case there's any issues. It may also help to look like you haven't showered in 2 weeks and run as soon as you make eye contact with security.

  • +2

    Cut it. Please record!

    • Done, nothing special unfortunately

    • +3

The most viewed graph goes straight to the moneyshot, thanks YouTube.

    • +3

Should post this as a Deal under Freebies

    • +2

so, from what i can gather, always carry a magnet when you go shopping

    • This video shows a similar technique and also does a teardown of these tags to show how they work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ug_VYY6-yU

  • +10

I would submerge the device in water then cut it with the shoe above so the device drops and any ink or siren will be nullified.

Whatever you do, get video for us.

    • Done, nothing special unfortunately

  • +10

Just leave it attached, like a fashion statement

    • +10

      Paedophile GPS tracking device. Nice!

      • wait what

  • +8

    Magnet usually takes them off

    • joke or serious?

  • +4

Chuck the shoes in the freezer over night.
When your ready to remove, submerge in water and cut.

    • +3

      Submerge the whole freezer ?

      • +6

just to be safe, better submerge the whole house

  • +3

Zip lock bag over the device and then cut

If you happen to have a earth magnet laying around, I’m pretty sure you can use it to detach the tag. Maybe

    • +1

Doubt if he'll have one, earth magnets are rare, hence the name.

      • +1

Rare? You can buy them at your local Bunnings and they're all over ebay. If you pay more than ten bucks you've been ripped off.
Rare earth magnets are not rare because the rare earth they use (neodymium) is not rare.

      • +3

        Hence the name?

"Earth" is pretty not rare where I come from, and "magnets" are all over my fridge, so also not rare. So which part of the name makes them rare?

(Yes, OK, I do know what they are really called. Although even then, the simple fact is that even with the correct name of "rare-earth magnets", they aren't actually "rare" in any real sense of the word).

  • You could have at least also uploaded a photo of the receipt so it shows you most likely haven't stolen them…

  • just put it over a sink of water and cut it with pliers.

  • +28

    Found it.
    https://instoresecurity.com.au/product/alarming-tags-box-wra…

Looks like it just has alarm function, no ink. So cutting it off should be fine, then dump in water as others have suggested.

    • +5

More great detective work on ozbargain

      • Not sure why you got downvoted. If you were being sarcastic then I agree 100% with your sentiment. On the other hand, if you were being sincere then I also agree, unironically (since we're doing better than Reddit: at least innocent people don't lose their lives when OzBargainers want to larp as detectives).

        • Thankfully it's only innocent people losing their bargains here.

  • If you are worried by the ink, just cover the body with a thick layers of cling wrap and tapes, and cut the wire. But can you tell if the wire is solid or hollow inside?

  • +1

Anaconda sent me a jacket with security tag attached last week..

  • Happened to me on a t shirt from DFO, ended up cutting it as going back was a bit of a drive. Wasn’t an alarm or ink device. Straight forward cut using basic tools. Had to be careful with the fabric though.

  • Put the shoe in microwave for 2 minutes on high and then cut it off

  • +5

Watch the lockpicking lawyer on YouTube, you will get it off in 2 seconds after that

    • +8

2 is binding, good click on 3.

      • That's all I have for you today.

  • Call the bomb squad, they'll deal with it.. though the sneaker's may resemble distressed sandals afterwards

  • Use a strong magnet, that's usually how these tags work.

  • +2

Reminds me of my wedding day in the USA. We drove 40 minutes to the nearest Outlet Mall the afternoon before the wedding and got new 501 Levi Jeans and got home to find the ink tags on. I wasn't going to wear old jeans to my Mountain wedding! We removed them relatively easy with brute force and no ink came out. Wedding went well, we were married for 7 years :)

    • That was hilarious.

    • +2

Jeans last longer than the marriage

  • So if you take them back, they could assume you just picked them up from the store and are trying it on to get a freebie

    • Yeah they will usually ask for receipt. They did when I took my jacket in to get the tag removed.

      • What prevents anyone from using the real receipt but snatching the same but new product from the shelf?

        • +1

Sounds like an Ozbargain deal. I'll post it in a minute. "100% off shoes at Anaconda"

        • Morals.

  • So… which method have you chosen?

    • +3

Probably cut it, record it and post it if it's anything interesting :)

      • +2

What are you waiting for…..hurry up and do it!

  • So didn't the alarm go off when you carried them outside?

Best bet is to go back if you don't want damages to your brand new shoes.

Funnily enough this is everyday store at my local myer store. Security guard always gets frustrated checking sh*t loads of bags as retail assistants alway forget to remove tags.

  • depends entirely on the type of security tag, is the dye pack ones or the alarm, plenty of videos for removing the various types on YouTube. I bought clothing last year that was delivered and had all the round die pack security tags still on. Bit of a check online and found a solid hammer hit to the side could seperate the tage without breaking the dye capsules. If it is just alarm ones then just cut em off.

  • Destroy all evidence.
    Burn it.
    NOW!!

It's ok, I guess it will only be ONE shoe ;-)

  • nothing will happen. I cut it from a shirt.
    I used a metal cutter.
