  • Not audio extraction? Kind of useless if your hdmi device doesn't have a separate audio output

    • And not useless at all if it does - which may very well be the case.

      • The better ones extract the audio, convert to analogue and provide a 3.5mm output. I guess this is ok for $5 if it suits your needs

        • "The better ones"

If it's got a 3.5mm output, then that's an entirely different infrastructure.

Most common with the ones that you're referring to is that they overheat and contain poor DACs within.

This is a perfectly fine part that is useful if a GPU, hub or monitor that you're trying to use doesn't have that additional HDMI slot.

My VGA male to HDMI female ones have come in handy over the years quite a bit. If you're a techy then you probably already have a draw full of "just in case" converters/cables.

          • @Beyond: Well it depends. I've got a Tendak and a couple of ugreens and the DAC is fine and they certainly don't overheat

I do have an unbranded one and that has some pretty bad audio buzz though

            • @chromium: I'm not familiar with Tendak. Ugreen is a fine brand, but even if you were to compare their products to an accessory/part that is meaningful to you, they wouldn't make the cut.

I'm guessing you're not big on audio? A good quality DAC is pretty much useless if you're playing the audio out of low-mid range desktop speakers or even just audio below 320kbps.

My current DAC doesn't have an MQA decoder in it, so I'm pretty devastated about that considering I now primarily run Tidal. (due to cheap subscriptions with VPN)

@Beyond: I'm big on audio, but I'm only using these adapters to get analog video/audio out of a MiSTer FPGA from the hdmi port to connect to a 15Khz CRT. It needs a decent HDMI to VGA adapter. Out of the 4 I have, only of the ugreen ones handles every resolution properly. Also I have no analog audio output, so I need to extract the audio. It's running 80s and 90s PCs and video game consoles, so the DAC in the ugreen is fine for that level of audio :)

But yeah, for a PC with HDMI, one of these would be fine to convert to VGA as you'd most likely be able to get audio from the PC separately.

                • @chromium: Uhh, I have zero technical experience with CRT monitors.

I'm not really familiar with "MiSTer FPGA", I just gave it a google and read and my eyes lit up. I was seriously considering making a similar thing in a whole different way for my brother a year ago.

Now I just want to talk about random stuff regarding your construction journey. Haha.

I've been trying to develop my plex server, in a manner of speaking. Do you search for bits and pieces individually or have been following a setup guide so-to-speak?

@Beyond: I've got the bare minimum setup at the moment. The de10-nano, a heatsink and a 128 MB RAM board. That's all you really need to get going if you have a USB OTG hub. There's an IO board that provides analogue video you can get, but I wanted to play with direct video, which is they method of getting analogue video from the HDMI port. Once I was happy with that I've ordered a bunch of extras like a case, the digital io board, usb hub board, MT-32 Pi hat and RTC :) But yeah, they're all nice to haves, I've been happily using the bare minimum setup since I got it 3 weeks ago. It's really awesome, way better than I thought it would be, I can't stop playing around with it :)
