    Chromecast and use streaming apps…?

    • I have tried this but find it annoying when flicking channels , unless there is a faster option?

      • +1

When you say changing channels is slow, what app are you using?

I've got antenna points in both my TVs but after getting Chromecast I haven't bothered to use FTA anymore.
I use the Tivimate app, changing channels is almost instant…

I strongly recommend the NVidia Shield, this will do all you need it to, along with so much more. You will be amazed at its functionality, and its great for adding hard drives onto the unit, as it has 4k pass-through & upscaling, but so much more.
Less than $250AU and youll wonder why you didnt get one sooner…youll use it almost constantly. Truly, its money very well spent - check out any of the many reviews for the Shield.

Seconded. It's an amazing piece of kit.

Only function gap is recording FTA (you're stuck with the awful apps unless doing something bespoke) and casting from your phone appears to not work from a wired connection for some reason.

Fetch is a good second option if you need something foolproof.

Question - does anyone know the easiest way to watch Fetch recordings on a Shield? I tried installing the Fetch app and it was a dour experience.

I presume you're after Freeview TV channels? Not sure why you want to watch non-stop ads with some cut up shows sprinkled in between, but maybe consider getting set top boxes for the other 2 TVs if they support Freeview streaming app.

Consuming ineffective advertising to access free content is the OzBargain way

    • I'm getting rid of Foxtel which we also use to watch FTA . Will be going to Fetch Set top box . I do have google TV but don't really want to watch streaming TV as too slow in changing channels and cant record

      • We have Foxtel now…streams live foxtel tv without an aerial & has huge on demand catalogue…no need to record anything. You need to plug in an aerial for free to air channels- but it also has the streaming apps for free with 1 click so i just stream those thru the now box.

Do you want to watch two separate channels at the same time on separate TV's?

    • most likely just one at a time

  • +2

It depends on how much you want to throw at this endeavor, there's something like this https://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/ (works with Plex or on its own)

You could also buy a USB Tuner card and build a Plex box if you don't already have one, then stream it all about.

Antenna splitter and a 30m long cable might work (wouldn't expect a good signal).

Pay an electrician to put another antenna connector in the room you want.

    • i was looking at the HomeRun option.too . seems like a good idea

If you have a decent broadband quota (or unlimited), the simplest method (if you're tech-savvy & willing to put in a bit of time) would be Android TV device + Kodi + IPTV AU Add-on.

    Bonuses with this method is:
    - You can watch live TV ahead/behind by changing the location setting under IPTV AU
    - If you're in a regional area, you can watch channels that may not be available through FTA

Brilliant thanks, I just added this to my office TV.

    • cheers i might try this addon

  • You could stream the channels over wifi?

Yes you won't get the licensed sports but with an android box/new smart tv and Iview, sevenplus, nine now, ten play they all have watch live tv as an option.

    • unlimited internet and I already have Google TV and smart tvs. I also have fetch and Telstra TV, I got the google tv working but the misso doesn't like having to start the App and then changing channels is slow. She's not very Tech savvy

      • Try Amazon Prime - much better value than the other 2

        • already have that i want normal FTA TV via the cheapest possible method

I would just get an electrician to add connections at the aerial (or split the signal) to an extra one or two outlets where needed.

    • high set house and a rental

      • I doubt the owner would object if you wanted to install more tv points.

As your going to fetch you can stream FTA channels from the fetch mighty to a fetch mini in another room over wifi, I use it and works perfect, they are only $99 on the fetch store at the moment

    • This ^^

Cheaper than everything else that’s been suggested, and will be laid out very similarly to the existing foxtel boxes channels wise

    • +1

Agree, this works well. I just bought a refurbished mini from Fetch ebay and it was immaculate, works perfectly.

    • Thanks i have a fetch MIni but havnt really looked at the FTA over wIFI will have a look tonight

    rabbit ears

    • Yeah, if you're metro, then Rabbit Ears may well work fine.
Otherwise, just get some more Antenna ports installed.

    • yeah nah tried a new digital aerial with a booster and no go

  • +2

If you're referring to FTA channels, you might as well just put in some additional wall ports. Overall should be cheaper than any other solution.

    • cheers

  • As others have said, consider an Android box. I am largely Apple here but we use MiBox Android TV devices for about $100ea. They're so good and easy to use and you can bring pretty much all streaming services and FTA to work on them.

We have an aerial on the TV in the lounge but we just use the streaming apps as it's easier.

    • what app are you running via the Android box i want them all in 1 app i hate having to go in and out of each app 7 plus. nine now etc

    https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/01/live-au-iptv-channels-on-…

Get a a Google TV or Android device and follow the tutorial in the link. I have found this is the best way to get free to air without an aeriel connection. I use this on mine and it is very fast and changes channels swiftly, all channels are included so no need to switch apps.

    • I try this once but I can't watch AFL games through this. If I'm in Sydney, can't watch games that show in Adelaide.

    • thanks will look into this too

  • I am a big fan of the HDHomeRun.

    https://www.silicondust.com/

Plug it into your antenna and your home network and watch live tv anywhere.

I recently upgraded to the quad tuner model.

    Indoor TV antenna.

  • wall port in one room

Why not drill a hole and go though the wall ? Rented property? Maybe ask the owner nicely?

  • People still use free to air? I tore the aerials out of my home over a decade ago.

    • Some people find it very comforting to know that in a certain amount of minutes the ads will come on and they can then do some minor house chores, etc., and then wander back to catch up on some mindless FTA show they were first watching.

  • Add a fetch mini or two. It will link to your fetch mighty. Works. Cheap.

    • Can you share FTA Aerial from Fetch mighty that's plugged into room with aerial over wifi?

      • +1

        You sure can.
From one of their many help guides:
Share Free-to-Air to your Fetch Mini
You can watch Free-to-Air channels on your Fetch Mini by streaming them from your paired Fetch Mighty or Gen 2 box. This means you don’t have to connect your Fetch Mini to your TV antenna. (Your paired Fetch Mighty still needs a TV antenna connection to receive and share digital Free-to-Air TV).
There’s no additional set up for this. If your Fetch Mini has no antenna connected, the Free-to-Air channels on the paired box will be available in the TV Guide on the Fetch Mini too.

Note - and this is really important. Don't be tempted by second hand Fetch's that have been provided by ISPs like Optus etc. You have to have Fetch's that you have purchased outright from Fetch direct or a retailer. A purchased Fetch will not work with a rental Fetch from an ISP - ever.
And you can't share from a Mighty to another Mighty, or a Mini to a Mini. Has to be Mighty to Mini.

        • Cheers for the info. I knew about the boxes being looked to ISPs. might look for a mighty now. JB have refurbs for $199

          • @Regie69: Hope it goes well for you. We love our Fetch, and we use our sharing of the antenna. And recordings, etc. it’s not perfect, needs a reboot every now and then, butt overall does the job!

            • @bbinc: Thanks for the info bought a Refurbished Fetch Mighty from JB $199 and works a treat

  • So all you want is to be able to use FTA channels on a couple of TV in rooms where there is no antenna?
Indoor antennas or pay someone to pull antenna cables to those rooms. I don't think there is any other option.

Anything else is streaming off the internet through some app and it's not going to be the basic channel switching you're looking for.

    • cheers

  • I use a HDHomeRun. Expensive but a one time only thing. Plug into an ethernet port and the antenna, and then load up the app in any "smart" device you want. Or use Plex and run it via there and have the option of a PVR too. Good way to watch the cricket on my work PC during the summer too.

    • thanks will see what my best options are

  • Fetch Multi-room?

yep done this and works well
