Do you know the travel dates? (The site is down).

But that one has to do with free flights..

AirAsia FREE SEATS for Domestic destination within Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines:"

      • It's the same 10th Year Celebration promo. FREE SEATS for international was suppose to start on 16th but they obviously changed it…bait and switch.

  • -4

Travel period is nearly a year away! Thats a very long time for them to be sitting with your cash. And who knows if this airline will still be around by then.

    • +5

Can't guarantee anything in life, but I think AirAsia is a pretty sure bet - they're still profitable which is more than what could be said for a lot of other airlines.

    • +4

AirAsia has been around since 2001 and AirAsia X since 2007. If you have any worries just get some travel insurance (one that covers insolvency)!

      • +4

And Ansett Australia was founded in 1936, we all know how that went…but yes Insurance for the paranoid.

    • +3

How do we know we will be around either ;)

  • +4

So there are no free international flights at 2am tomorrow morning but $169 flights? Their regular price is only $200 something- not worth making an heroic 2am-with-much-consternation-and-probable-failure-effort for $169.

    Can someone please clarify?

    • Normal price from Melbourne to Phuket is >$500 for January

      • +2

I was looking at KL, which is where I want to go- I can get a seat for $279 tomorrow.

        • +1

Clearly a better deal for someone who wants to hop from KL.

      • -2

I paid $170 for syd to KL return airfare about 4 months ago.

        • +3

          Stroke it much?

  • So sale starts tomorrow, but you have to prebook it now?
i want to just book trip to MELB-KL then KL-OSAKA japan.

  • +1

So does anyone actually know what they mean by 'all-in-fare'??? Total price of the flight (incl. taxes etc.)??

    • Yes, it includes all taxes but not luggage fees etc.

  • Is airasia safe? (genuine question as I remember some time ago a few OZB'ers have uploaded pics of incidents that happened with AirAsia)

    • +2

      Nothing that I've ever heard.

That Qantas dodgy airline from some banana republic has had scores of near misses…..

    • +1

Flew Airasia to KL last year. Aircraft was new and clean. All went smoothly with no issues. Legroom is OK. Staff were good.
Flew Qantas to Europe this year. Qantas staff refused to check our baggage all the way through to our destination, Qantas booked our young children on separate seats away from us sitting next to strangers (on the outward and return legs). Qantas aircraft was old and the in flight entertainment system broke for one of the long haul legs.

  • Why is there not a connecting flight for:

Sydney - Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong

    Since there are flights from

Melbourne - Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong

Does that mean we just need to buy these separately? wonder wat the difference might be?
    1. Sydney - Kuala Lumpur = $169 x 2 (return)
    2. Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong = $48 x 2 (return)

    • +3

i think it could be from the different flight times. Flight Times may cause you to take a night in KL before heading to HK because Syd-Kl flight lands at ~5pm. When leaving KL back to Syd, its roughly 11pm<. These may not fit the "connection" criteria and therefore unadvertisable (i think i made up this word).

  • Why does the website says booking starts on the 14th of May?

nvm, it's actually a different sales

  • +2

I don't know why they sell the connecting flights higher than those seperate flights put together?
    Like:
    1.Gold Coast - Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong 239.00
    2.Gold Coast - Kuala Lumpur AU$ 169.00
    Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong AU$ 48.00
    Total: AU$ 217.00
Is it any difference between them? Do I need to check in again at Kuala Lumpur if I take the seperate one?

    • yeah if you buy the full connecting flight it looks like they don't charge you airport taxes, promise to put you on the next available flight free if you miss your connection, get priority transfer at the airport etc. There seem to be a few extra services provided in KL which are covered in the extra cost

    • 1.Plane fly, plane land & refuel, plane fly.You can stay inside the plane during transit.

2.Plane fly, plane land, passengers gets off, plane fly ( on a different plane) = 2 planes and you might have to wail a long time for the flight to Hong Kong = takes longer to reach destination :)

      • Are you sure that option 1 involves the exact same plane?

  • anyone know about the booking fees for the airline? I could pay Paypal if that meant no booking fees.

    • $5 cc fee for each leg, no fees for paypal

      • Correctamundo!

  • +4

I have flown with Airasia many times, service is great! seats aren't very comfortable for that long flight to KL but no worse i imagine than any other budget airline.

Just be sure to check the connecting flight from KL to wherever is not a huge wait.. i know from the gold coast to KL then to thailand is usually a 9 hour wait!

    • +2

      how?

    • This is for international sale. The other one is for domestic sale

    • +1

Meant to neg sambo150's neg, but clicked + by accident :(

  • why cant i book kl to syd on jan 11th with the special rate? shows up as 369 aud and no promo

  • +2

The international sale has not started yet. You need to book after 2am tomorrow Sydney time.
The special fares will not be loaded until then

  • If everything goes well, AirAsia is lovely, as soon as something goes wrong, good luck getting any sort of solution to your problem from customer service. Price you pay (or don't pay), I suppose. I will never fly with them after what happened to my parents (see here: http://melbournemaniac.livejournal.com/3365335.html), but I guess that's only one in how many?

  • some one post airasia will have free ticket promotion at 14May , however I wait half hour for a nothing.

  • Air asia booking website is so frustrating… wanted to book last time and they 'promo' prices kept changing for specific dates i wanted. Even went as bad as going thru the process of booking with my details to only have the site crash and going back in to find out the promo price disappeared. So disapointing/dodgy.. ended up booking jetstar, $200 not worth the hassle

  • +1

Anyone having issues on the 'desktop' website, use the iPhone app instead.. Last time for the $99 flights, I used the app to book and it was a peice of cake, no issues whatsoever

  • So, how did y'all go? Any success?

    • Got return flights Gold Coast - KL. $303 total

      • What time of day did you get them?

        • Around 6 am. 4 hrs after sale went live.

      • +1

Saw quite a few flights around that price at 8am, but did not buy. Thats about twice the $160 return price I got on Scoot (GC-Sing). Scoot had been promoting $199 return GC-Sing a few days back. Its so cheap to pop up to KL from there or go onto other destinations.

Could not find any of the promised free flights.

Seems the days of cheap fares with AirAsia are over. Flew to London for $650 return in 2010 & flights to KL from GC were $72 back then.

        • +1

The free seats promo is just another bait and switch marketing scam. $300 return is a bit too much considering I only paid $170 return a few months ago. Hopefully Scoot have another promo for next year's flight.

Im over air asia and these sales they never work or when they do the dates they list are not on sale!!

  • Got mine:

    Perth-KL
    20kg
    meal
    Advance Seat Request

    KL-Perth
    30kg
    meal
    Advance Seat Request

    All together AUD$386 including tax

  • you guys whinging about sales for $300 return being a rip off need a serious reality check. okay, they might not be as cheap as you previously paid but for christ sake, you'd be flat out driving 3200km melbourne to the gold coast for $300 return then alone 15000km to/from KL.

    • Don't know what driving yourself in a car with as many people as you can fit in at almost no extra cost (travelling when you want), stopping as you desire, has got to do with the per person sale price of about 300 people crammed in a budget flight (paid for about 1 year in advance)? You often can buy flights within Oz for less than a cross-city taxi ride. And you can't drive to KL.

Besides who is whinging? No one except you said the price was a rip off. But hassling through their congested booking system at 2am is frustrating, and may not be worth the saving. People were mainly saying AirAsia's systems were problematic. Plus, seems there were no free flights as advertised.

But AirAsia was THE low cost carrier into Asia - that was their main advantage. So increased prices will make people think twice about AirAsia.

From past experience, these prices are high for an AirAsia Anniversary Sale (and twice the price I got on Scoot a few weeks ago for a similar length flight - a fairer comparison than car fuel costs).

Prices just over 2 years ago were $650 return to London (throw that into your fuel analogy!) & $72 one way to KL from GC, on a similar promo. When you fly on a tight budget with discount airlines like AirAsia many times a year (like I do), it is a little worrying to see their prices keep rising. As the lowest cost airlines increase prices, there is less incentive for other airlines to keep prices down.

Now that is a reality check!

      • +1

i think you missed the point. good luck with those sales though, happy travelling.

        • Yes I did miss your point - long haul flying is usually so much cheaper per passenger Km than driving.

The ABS (2006) say the average Australian car uses about 11.4 litres of petrol/100 kilometres - currently $17/100km just in petrol (let alone capital, depreciation, & all those other operating costs) against a total price of $1.29/100km (including equivalent costs, wages, profits & taxes) for my next flight to Singapore! (No wonder I sold my cars to go travelling.)

Driving an average car from Melbourne to the GC return would cost twice these return flights to KL for 1/2 the distance, just in fuel. Driving an equivalent round trip distance as the Scoot Singapore return fare, would cost $2100 against $160!! You may see why comparing total costs of any long haul flights with automotive fuel costs make little sense.

But we are OzBargainers & want the best deal - so some whinging may happen. Yes you can compare with costs of other holidays/driving & about $310 return sounds cheap. But Scoots recent $160 Singapore return sounds cheaper to me!! That saving goes a long way in Asia - a week of accommodation & great food for me at some Malaysian beaches.

But no one said the fares were a rip off.
It is just not the fare prices we have come to expect from AirAsia sales over many years, or airline competitors flying similar routes like Scoot, Tiger & Jetstar - those are our points of comparison, not cost of driving a car.

Thanks for your happy travelling wishes ;)
Best of luck wth your own travels!
