Hisense 85U80G 85" ULED 8K Smart TV with HDMI 2.1 $3799.99 Delivered @ Costco (Membership Required)

510

I bought the Sony XR85X95J for $4199.40 delivered in April.

Wish I didn't.

The 85U80G is a better screen in every way IMHO and is only $3799.99 delivered.

HDMI 2.1
FALD
Android OS
8K @ 60HZ
4K @ 120HZ
3 year warranty

I waited six months for this to drop in price and gave up when the Sony deal was on….

Don't believe the people who say this TV isn't 4K @ 120hz

It most certainly is. https://hisense.com.au/blog/demystifying-hdmi-2-1-features-v…

Bought the 75" for 3,996.00 (4,051.00 delivered) from Goodguys back in July 21 and extremely happy with it.
Great screen, great picture, great upscaling for none UHD content..
All 4K options get "green ticks" in the screen settings on Xbox series X.

Saw one last night at Ringwood, things a beast.

  • +9

8k why? Are people sitting one metre from it?

    • Nothing to do with the size and distance.

I saw some 8k clips for the Olympic Games downscaled to 4K and I just can’t get rid of the idea of trying 8K myself even if I know it’s probably gonna be a one-off fuss like 3D TVs.

      • +1

        Resolution and size = DPI

If the DPI is out of this world high, like literally 2x an iPhone resolution, then you need to sit SUPER CLOSE to actually get value, for your money.

Based on what most people sit, from an 85" TV, I suspect 4k would be more than enough, unless you're under 6 or 7' from the TV (eyeball to screen surface)

I'm a lunatic, who sits only 7' from my 65" TV, I can't imagine even I would sit under 7' to an 85"

        • DPI is important don't get me wrong. But physical size and density has "physical" impact, too, sometimes even more than numbers on the paper.

I feel that 8k will go the way of 3D TVs.

    • +6

I feel that in 2030, buying anything less than 8K would be like buying a SD television today.

      • +1

With OLED getting cheaper every year and production costs for next gen display technologies like Micro LED quickly decreasing, I feel like buying an LCD TV (aka LED, ULED, QLED) in 2030 would be like buying a Rear Projection TV today.

  • whats the power consumption like on these big 8k tvs?

    • +1

I saw an 8K LG TV on display that was hot to touch. Crunched the numbers on the label and it used more than my Air con. No thanks.

2022- why is this tv only 60HZ?

    • 8k?

      • +1

        Quick google tells me it's 8k/60 4k/120.

Be careful as hisense gives their good stuff to the US (for good reviews) and ships junk to australia and hope people read the overseas reviews and buys the local junk version.

Samsung, Hisense and TCL all do this, same model number, but very very different hardware.

        • +4

No!!! Don't be fooled! Australian models are not the same as USA ones.

          Their website states:
As models may vary from country to country (even though products may have the same model number), please check the specifications. This is the Australian model.

Hisense name their models the same in different regions despite being different products. This does not have 120hz

          https://hisense.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/85U80G-Spe…

    • Pretty sure it's 100hz and 200hz for their "Smooth motion rate". Though it's hard to tell since Hisense have different specs for the same models in different countries.

  • Go or no Go? Looking a 85" tv for a while, that doesn't cost arms and legs! 60hz refresh rate is a bummer.

Would love and appreciate some feedback or other options for a 85"

    TIA

    • This.

You can't get an 85" 8K television for anywhere near this price.

I have the Sony XR85X95J but prefer the 85U80G to it

  • This is very confusing.
Is this 4k 120hz or not?
Is there a specific rtings.com review that I can reference?

  • +5

Don't trust hisense with their false advertising. Make sure to do your research before buy any hisense TV. Australian versions are totally different crap TVs with same model number as excellent American version. Total bullshit.

    • +3

Yes, very confusing. Bad Hisense. Gotta do your homework and know exactly what you're buying. Caveat emptor.

  • +4

Unfortunately, from the product spec even the 4k is limited to 60HZ - HDMI type 4K@ 60Hz with HDCP version 2.2 HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI3, HDMI4

  • Anyone know the max brightness specs on this tv? Comparing it to the Samsung QN90B. It's going to go in a veeery bright room, with a lot of sun. So can't go OLED :'(

    • +1

can't speak for the hisense but the qn90b in my living room (very bright) is fantastic!

      • As someone in the market for a QN90b and a fellow OZB, did you get a good deal?

      • Whoa, you already got a QN-B series. That was quick.

        Surely a 4k mini-LED would be brighter than a 8k LED? 🤔

      • Also… do you know what sub-panel you have 😅

  • +1

I have the 75inch version. It does 4k@120 on two of the HDMI ports. The spec sheet looks to possibly not have all the information.

It does list HDMI 3 and 4 as HDMI 2.1 compliant. Mentions 200hz smooth motion rate above also. But really the only way to confirm for sure is probably to get someone who purchased it earlier to confirm. This same TV appeared on OzBargain before and was listed 4k@120 back then.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/653802

Seems odd to me that the 85inch version would lose the best feature. But who knows. Hopefully someone has this tv in 85inch to confirm.

    • +1

Interesting. I wonder why so many people are claiming this is the junk version. If the only source for this claim is the spec sheet, who do we believe?

      • +2

        Ex-employee here.
They’re the shadiest company when it comes to advertising specs.
I lost count how many times the marketing team either removed or changed the spec sheet when someone took them to fair trading for misleading information LOL.

        • +2

          This is 100% 4K @ 120hz

It is fully HDMI 2.1 compliant….

          • +1

@TheCandyMan2020: Oh I don’t doubt you man. Just sharing my experience. Perfectly acceptable TV’s for non brand snobs IMO.

            • +2

@Maths Debater: I owned an 85U8G and it was better than my Sony XR85X95J is

              For the doubters:

              https://hisense.com.au/blog/demystifying-hdmi-2-1-features-v…

I am 100% sure this TV is 120hz/4K

If it's not, you can complain to Hisense and return it and get your money back.

              • @TheCandyMan2020: I believe you.
Some models are truly great bang for buck.

              • @TheCandyMan2020: May I ask if you saw a significant difference between the u8g and u7g?

                • +1

                  @timwog: The U8G is FALD.

                  The U7G is not.

The sound and picture on the U8G was excellent. It was substantially brighter than my new Sony.

I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the U7G because it wasn't FALD.

The U8G was an excellent TV but my gripe with it was that it didnt actually work properly with Google Home.
It was advertised as being voice controllable via Alexa and Google Assistant - but in actual fact it could only be controlled by voice if you pressed the microphone button on the TV remote when you issued the commands.
We really needed voice control to work.

This U80G is Android OS, unlike VIDAA in the U8G - so this will work with Google out of the box….

                  • @TheCandyMan2020: Thanks mate. Much appreciated. Yeah, I'd heard about the voice function requiring the remote control. Perhaps it was reading you in Whirlpool. Bizarre.

              • @TheCandyMan2020: Would you trust a blog post or the actual spec sheet for the TV from their website? If you had a problem with the TV is the blog post or the actual spec sheet more likely to stand up in a dispute?

      • +2

TBH there are a lot of butthurt people here and on Whirlpool who have attacked Hisense over misleading information about the lower spec models.

The fact is this TV is, and always has been, fully HDMI 2.1 compliant - that includes 4K @ 120hz

You can't buy a bigger name 85" 8K set for less than twice this price - more like 3 to 4 times.

        • They lost a lot of trust after the U9G debacle.

As a Hisense owner for over 6 years, I would say bang for buck their top and midrange TV's are excellent. I would avoid the budget low end models.

I have also found their customer service absolutely outstanding if you have an issue.

I deeply regret buying my Sony 85" in April now.

    • Pretty much this.
Know what you’re buying and give credit where credit is due.

    • As a long time Hisense consumer as well, the difference is the past 2 years or so they have significantly changed tact with the junk they dump on the Australian market and use of identical model numbers as overseas despite big differences especially in hardware. Whether something is mid or high range now is irrelevant sadly. You cannot assume anything and need to be very, very careful.

  • -1

I don't get out of bed for at least 16k

  • I’d be careful buying this thinking you could easily return it if it isn’t 120hz coz u are buying from Costco which is advertised as 60hz in the specs.

  • So the 75 beats 85?

  • -1

What Hisense has been doing with the 4K120hz is skipping a frame each time so it is actually 60hz for video but 120hz only in motion. Very sneaky that it still shows up as 120hz on Xbox and other info etc. Been many videos of their models for the past 2-3 years doing this all over the world. Other than that Hisense still make really good TVs and we do occasionally get the best models like the dual cell, which was better than the US version, a year after we had it

    • This is not my experience with the 75U80G. Some low end TVs might do that. Doesn't mean they all do.

120fps looks flawless and is silky smooth and is obviously pumping out more frames than 60fps.

Fortnite and THPS1+2 look outstanding on this TV in performance mode on my Xbox Series X. Played a few others with a noticeable difference too but these were the only games I put a lot of time into.

120fps with VRR makes this TV incredible for gaming. Just wish more games made use of the higher frame rates

      • The rtings review mentions watching 4K on 8k panel to be “not pixel perfect”. As an owner, what are your thoughts on this?

      • This has been tested on all of Hisense 120hz panels. Its nothing to do with low or high end, as only high end panels have 120hz. Even Sony cut the resolution in half for 4K 120hz on X90J. Plenty of companies doing dodgy things to make it seem like they are legitimate. Just because your eyes think its correct, doesn't mean anything. Some people can see the small flickering with BFI, others have no idea its even doing it. Hisense just have a good algorithm to hide the missing frame but when you play it frame by frame its there to see

Anyone know if we can arrange someone to mount this tv via costco, or an independent job from another store? Considering buying cheers

    • On this topic, does anyone have advice on which mount to get, even if we have to install it ourselves?

      • Look up it's vesa mounting pattern and weight easy as..

      • I can recommend this bracket. I'm using it to mount my 85Q8. Hisense have a really wide 800mm space between mounting holes which makes 80% of the average brackets unusable. I don't use the full motion feature (because the TV is 50kg), but it is very helpful when it comes to mounting the TV, since you can extend the bracket and don't have to get close to the wall and try to aim these little things while carrying a 50kg TV. You can also leave the feet on as you mount it because the bracket is far enough from the wall.

  • What's the difference between U8G and U80G apart from 4k and 8k??

  • Just my 2c, recently bought a U7G, it has a great picture if you are directly in front but the viewing angle is crap, at 45 deg it gets quite washed out. The U8G also has similarly bad angle issues (according to rtings).

I know this is a different model but I'd definitely check this out if I was buying it.

    • +1

It’s because it’s using VA panel, which is very common for tvs this size and specs. It’s almost better than IPS in every way except viewing angle when it got so big and such feature rich. OLED is a similar story - except peak brightness is not the highest, it is unbeatable. There were dual LCD models in the past that are even better but mostly phased out due to pricing so you can only see the tech on professional monitors now.

For all the features and picture quality when sitting straight on, I think the viewing angle is a good trade off. But as always, do the homework before buy.

      • Thanks for your detailed response. Viewing angle had never been an issue in the past, so it wasn't something I had factored in. Probably would have gone with an IPS panel if I knew given our loungeroom configuration.

  • What OS does it run? I hate the Hisense OS.
